The Guardian Angel, A Cocktail So Crazy It HAS To Work!

- Today we have a short episode on a crazy delicious drink from one of my favorite Bartenders. It's one of those that look like it doesn't work on paper and then you taste it and BLAMO! Mind Blown! And to achieve something new with ingredients we've seen paired over and over again in drinks is quite the achievement, it goes to show that you don't need to reinvent the wheel to make something amazing. Attention to detail, inspired flavor pairing and a little elbow grease is all you need! Now go get inspired people!
A Note on Substitutions: This cocktail is one of those that will be hard to sub ingredients into to approximate the same flavor. The Wray and Nephew can be subbed for something Like Rum Fire for sure but it cannot be subbed for just any overproof rum. Because the Montenegro is proprietary in flavor (as any amaro is) if you sub it, you may get great results but you are making a different cocktail, not that that's a bad thing or anything! Okee go forth and prosper!

3 Drops Rosewater
A couple of Cucumber Slices

Leandro: "You know what's really funny Marius..."
Marius: "I don't know how funny that was...."
The bromance is real. 😂🥃
Love the perfect Barfly Muddler 'product placement' shot. Smooth!
Looks like a Mai Tai base (Rum, Orgeat and Lime) with Amaro Montenegro in place of the orange liquor, the addition of Cucumber, and with Rose Water accentuating the inherent floral taste of Montenegro.
This drink is such a banger, and a great cocktail for your repertoire if you entertain fellow cocktail enthusiasts and want to impress with the Montenegro. Although the original drink is amazing on its own, I feel like it lends itself well to some riffing. Swap out the lime juice with lemon juice, use a different amaro, use a lower-proof rum, use a higher-proof black rum, muddle a jalapeño slice... endless possibilities. Otherwise, this is a beautiful drink with balance and complexity. 10/10
1:46 - That's a close-up shot that even our DOP Saso would be proud of, nice one! And the cocktail sounds super interesting, it's weird how sometimes wild combinations just work out to create something great.
The Bourbon Renewal was insanely delicious. I'll have to try this one.
The Guardian Angel and a new Italian word. This is why its the Educated Barfly. Thanks.
Love your videos man!
Making this on Friday - can hardly wait!
Oooohhhh!! This one looks amazing!
This looks delicious. I love the bright color of the drink as well.
This one is super unique and delicious! Love it when you bring us stuff like this. :-)
Like the title of this one. So crazy it HAS to work, no other option. There were a lot of unique ingredients in this one, but you friggin nailed it.
Sounds delish.
wray & nephew and amaro montenegro? this oughta be good
Thanks. I was looking for another drink to use my Wray and Nephew OP in.
Yes! I just bought a bottle of Amaro Montenegro! This guy is getting made!
Glad to hear the banter with Marius is coming back... Was missing it.
Also, need a video on garnishes: which garnishes go with which cocktail.
I love Montenegro! I drink it on the rocks and can’t get enough of the Eucalyptus notes
Looks good. I love creating cocktails sometimes they are good sometimes not that good.
Always, the smile during the shake. I pretty much do the same at home. Finger guns... majestic.
Made this last night. Delicious !
great :)
4 of my favorite cocktail ingredients and one of my favorite scents. . Overproof rum, Montenegro Amaro, Orgeat, lime and rose. Will be trying tonight.
Agreed, it does look crazy on paper, but it’s fantastic! Tried it for the first time last at a holiday party my wife and I hosted. I then started making it for our guests as well, and they loved it!
i'm slowly starting to realize that i seem to like any drink created by Sam Ross or Jeffrey Morgenthaler and i sometimes feel that the people behind the drinks are not highlighted enough for a hobby cocktail enthusiast like me. you're already doing a fantastic job with the history of the cocktails and giving credit but something like a bartender spotlight series might be interesting. Bartender Spotlight: Erick Castro - and then present 3 drinks? just food for thought, keep up the great work :)
Just wait...you’re going to love what’s coming...
So good! Still don’t have amaro montenegro, used Aperol instead, super tasty. Thanks!
I didn't have any cucumber, and I completely forgot about the rosewater, and I still really, really liked this one a lot. I intend to pick up a cucumber soon and try it properly. Thanks!
Sipping a Guardian Angel during zoom cocktails with family. What a great drink! Sweet/sour/herbal... What a treat!
The opposite of sprezzatura would be ingarbugliamento, or ingarbugliare something, to make it more complicated than it really is
Keep up the great content Leandro!
Quoting that
Yes!
I love that there are two potential words for this-by which I mean it seems very fitting that the answer to Leandro's question contains extra complications.
I like cocktails with challenging ingredients
Always love watching your videos, however, I’ve looked through and I’ve not seen a French Martini. Any plans to do one, preferably with a Leandro twist?
Sounds super interesting, I've been actually making a bunch of Erick Castro's cocktails recently, the most recent being the Keoke Coffee (I got it off of his IG account too lol) and they have all been fantastic.
I just made this and wow. That is weird but really tasty. All the components kind of fade in and out. Like you get the cucumber, then the rosewater, then the Wray, then the rosewater again, then the Montenegro and it just goes on...
I’ve never had a cocktail with Montenegro that tasted as good as Montenegro does by itself. Don’t think this will prove me wrong, but still willing to give it a go!
This drink is so good. I dropped a couple tiki bitters on top and it turned out great! Is this kind of a tiki daiquiri?
A bit of Wray and nephew goes a long way in this drink. The funk comes through loud and clear but leaves just enough of the Monte, Orgeat and lime and cuc freshen it up nicely. This is a really nice drink. To be honest I went with 1 drop of rose water, next time I might venture to 2...
I guess I know what I'm making when I get to work!
Wow
thanks sir
You guys should do a series that goes through all 77 IBA official cocktails and talk about the background of each. I know at least a few of them haven't been done by you yet!! (I just selfishly want more content.)
Hi, I have all the ingredients except the Amaro Montenegro, can I use Campari/Aperol/Vermonth to substitute for it?
P.S dig you channel, love the vids!
I literary did just run to the liquor store and buy a bottle Amaro
Montegro and I am thanking my guardian angel right now, ;-) Thanks for
this one. It may be hard going back to plain old bitters.
P.S Since the Montengro seems to already have a rose-water hint, I just had to go with orange-blossom water. Might be worth a try
"Lime juice"
Me: aight I got that...
"Orgeat"
Me: ah sheet....
I'm missing the cucumber which is literally the cheapest ingredient...
for the overproof rum- can i use plantation oftd instead of wray & nephew? Thanks for the great vid
Marius:”I don’t see how that’s funny.”
😂😂
Loved every drink you did with italian amari... have you tried Amaro Amara (Blood Orange Amaro from Sicily or maybe something with Italicus) Greetz from Germany
Thanks!
Yummy
Ok Montenegro is getting added to my ingredients list
On sprezzatura, it sounds like the opposite of sprezzatura might be found in Italian but might be one of those humorous Yiddish terms for describing the human condition.
Any Frangelico cocktails? (not too sweet) or winter cocktails warm and cold?
This sounds incredibly interesting, I will have to give this a shot. Side note, I recently ran into a drink by David Wondrich called the modern cocktail, and it is absolutely one of the best drinks I have ever had. A quick Google search will reveal this unbelievable recipe. Idk how well-known this one is but it should be more so imo.
Hey, thanks for this comment. I just looked this up and made it. Interesting list of ingredients. I'm not sure what to make of it. I like that it's quite dry. The sloe gin is very forward. I made it as it appears on Difford's Guide but used a fairly plain scotch. Maybe could have used something smokier. I didn't have ango bitters so did a small dash each of Regans and Fee Bros. Gotta say as I'm sipping on it, it's growing on me. I love the Guardian Angel. I need to try some more David Wondrich cocktails.
Nice :)
The English version of sprezzatura would I guess be Steez
Hey Leandro, the liquor stores here in Oregon just started selling Montenegro again. Can you, off the top of your head, rattle off the shortlist of must-try Montenegro cocktails? Just bought a bottle. Never had it before. Thx.
This looks amazing but not surprisingly, we can't purchase Amaro Montenegro here in Québec Canada. Can I use Averna Amaro Siciliano instead?
Leandro: "...one word that represents an idea. We don't have that in English."
Me: Pretty sure that's what most words are... As Carlin says, "Thoughts are fluid... and then we assign a word to that thought and then we're stuck with that word for that thought."
No no no you know what I was saying there is NO single word in English which describes an entire concept
@@TheEducatedBarfly Sounds like a challenge at proving you wrong. ;-)
What about the word "concept"? "Concept" pretty much describes the entire concept of a concept. tee-hee
@@nicotti oh stop it. Please prove me wrong. If you can I have a surprise for you 😂
Do a series on cocktails you’ve never tried! :)
Ok
Can I substitute Amaro Nonino since I don’t have the Montenegro? If you don’t have Rose Water, any substitute for that?
Do you have the book Minimalist Tiki? That will give you a LOT of new drinks to make
Writing down for the future, sounds great Leandro. Is that a 5oz or a 7oz coupe?
Its a 6oz coupe
If only I had half those ingredients, wa wa waaaaa....
I’m thinking it should be renamed the tiki bartender’s handshake lol
An italian sentence that my old maths professor used to say was:"... è come andare a caccia di conigli con un bazooka"
Literally "... it's like going rabbit hunting with a bazooka"
what brand of rose water did you use and where did you buy that brand?
Any rose water will do but I got this particular one at Whole Foods
Is Amaro Nonino a viable sub?
I own about 20 bottles of rum, but not the wray and nephew. Only over proof I've got is Smith and Cross. Do you reckon that will work?
It will be different but I do think it will work :)
Embellishmento. That's the Italian word for making things that are technically easy to do look harder. Only needed to add the "o" to make it Italian sounding.
Do you mean Abellimento? Embellishment?
@@TheEducatedBarfly No, actually I was riffing on a made up word. The concept being that if one is embellishing--they are making things seem "harder" than they seem to be. So a one might say, a bit of a embellishment on embellisment. You had asked in the video for a Italian word for making things that are easy--harder than they need be. Embellishmento--a made up word.
Ahhhh LOL 😂 I thought so but I’m also super literal and gullible LOL
that's one chonky muddling stick
do you use that to go after people who don't pay their bills at the bar?
Can you sub fees rose water bitters?
can I use Punt e Mes if i haven't got Montenegro at hand?
You can...but they’re going to be different drinks altogether. But give it a try!
Shameless muddeler add ;)
affettazione is the antonym you're looking for
Marius I love you but I'm not too crazy about the new font.
Have you deleted the clip where you compare fresh lime juice with bottle juice?
No that’s on another channel
CZcams.com/Barflyfreepour
It was Lemon juice tho
@@TheEducatedBarfly So that's why I could not find it! I thought maybe you threw it away because you were ashamed of it or something.
@@TheEducatedBarfly Btw, the Swede David Kringlund made a similar video that showed similar results.
@@TheEducatedBarfly czcams.com/video/y1iExIpV_sI/video.html
@@AlajBag nah, I’m not gonna bury the results LOL. I STILL think using fresh juice is the way to go. Even though the oxidized juice was very hard to pick out in the cocktail I picked each juice out perfectly when just tasting the juice. Super easy to decipher the day old then. If I had done with lime it would have been more dramatic I think. That said I’ll continue to use fresh juice i still believe the results are much better but if you’re in a pinch and live in a place where fresh fruit is hard to get or insanely expensive...well....
I'm going to have to make up some orgeat to try this... it sounds great. I have all the other ingredients... And I won a bottle of Flor de Cana 25 YO as a prize in the final round of Trump Troll Bingo with my homies. ! I will use the W&N overproof in the coctail, however..
I don’t think the Italians have a word for the opposite of sprrezzatura, but I bet the Germans can make one up.......
And it will be 37 letters long.....
Time to make some orgeat....
Anyone else morning drinking?
Subscriber cocktails, just sayin'.....
There nöthing wrong with remakes of the standard, riffs you've been surprised by over the years, or youre own most served and most ordered cocktails from your years behind bars. Cucumber cocktails grew into almost every menu in 2020. Beauty of a channel, unlike behind a bar? Not making same cocktail 30X a night+?
you get criminally low likes for what you do
someone needs to do something about that ;)
@@TheEducatedBarfly I try my best
You bartender guys need to start teaching normal cocktails that normal people can make for a Christmas gathering or a backyard barbecue. When it gets to the point of using eyedroppers to add exotic ingredients, you've lost us.
