- A delicious Negroni variation with Amaro Montenegro!
I wanted to get this cocktail out to you before Negroni Week was a distant memory, although it is over for this year, I don't think it's too late to share my original Negroni Week offering for this year. What i tried to do with this cocktail is illustrate how important Gin selection is in your Negroni build. Part of the genius of the Negroni is that is utilizes not one but two proprietary ingredients: Gin and Vemrouth. Both of these elements are completely different company to company so when you switch them out in your Negroni you can get some pretty brilliant and wildly different flavors. For this build I went with the Gin from Mulholland Distilling which offers a very cucumber forward Gin, I subbed the vermouth with Amaro Montenegro which provides us with a silky mouthfeel and then add Campari (of course) but also a barspoon of Mr.Black Coffee liqueur. The initial idea here was to pair the very surprisingly good flavor buddies: Cucumber and coffee. Not the flavors you'd normally think together but boy are they delicious! I now that some of you won't be able to get Mulholland Gin so a very good sub here would be Hendricks Gin due to the very prominent cucumber in it's flavor profile. So for those of you Negroni lovers who're craving something different, give this one a try!

I agree, Leondro. Mixology is an Art. Art can be taught. But whether you make money from it or not, it doesn't negate talent and passion.
I subscribe to this channel because you always give the basic principles and your preference. You could smash all the ingredients together and call it a day. But you are teaching. And that's important.
Love the content
Leandro, I just made one of these Mulholland Drive cocktails, subbing the original specs with Hendrick's and a barspoon of cold press. Dude, this is an absolutely magical negroni variation. I've been exploring the wonders of Amaro Montenegro, and this drink opens yet another vista for me on that adventure. I am blown away, thank you so much!
I went down that rabbit hole of learning online and this is one of my favorite channels to learn from now. Thanks Leandro!
Many thanks for the next recipe. Very successful and harmonious combination. Recorded in their favorites.
Great name for a drink. Mulholland Dr. is iconic in so many great (and warped) film noir movies. Because of this I ascended into Mulholland out of Beverly Hills as a young midwestern man many years ago. Let it be said Mulholland was eye opening in those days. Craziest damn road in the country. $20 million dollar mansions next to shacks. Gun crazy survivalist types next to hippie communes. Next minute you’re in a typical upper middle class suburb looking area... For a mile maybe. Before it transformed into some creepy Charlie Manson type ranch scenario... And back again.
The road sure has and has had it's twist and turns.
I finally made this cocktail with the Mulholland gin and wow... it's incredible. I think you're 100% right about the cucumber-forward nature of the gin really shining in this one. I've made it previously with Ford's (more citrus in its profile) and it's good, but it's not that unique so doesn't stand out as well. Leandro, this is a great combination. The Montenegro is an especially brilliant addition to balance the bitterness. The Mr. Black also has just the tiniest presence but is an important element in that it helps temper the brightness of the gin. Incredible, man.
i appreciate the reminder of how much spirit/brand selection can make a difference in the craft thank you
So I finally made this Mulholland drive, and notw it is on my list of favorite drinks. Holy smokes this is tasty! Nice job!!!
This is a deeply complex, spiritt-forward wonder cocktail. Haven't stopped thinking about it since you mixed it for me and Tracy. 😋🥃
Sounds amazing! Definitely giving this a try!
Thanks much for the drink sir.👍🏼👍🏼
Just made this drink and it was a little strong for my taste. I like Campari but it’s all I could taste. What I love about your videos though is they’ve given me an understanding of how to balance certain flavours and by changing the amount of Mr Black and Montenegro in the drink, and adding some dilution with crushed ice, I’ve made a slight variation that I love. Thanks for giving me the confidence and knowledge to experiment rather than just going “nah this isn’t for me”
Man, I made this, but with London Dry Gin (Beefeater). It was still magnicent, possibly the best Negroni variation I've had. Thanks so much guys.
Love the combination of Montenegro and coffee
Dude, I just made this with Averna and Plymouth Gin plus a dash of Cucumber Bitters. Heavenly good!
a must try for me !
Hey man! Holy cow, can’t believe this was a year ago. But I got to the part where you look to inspire. Totally got at least one here my man 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼 Dunno why but wanted to let ya know that what your mission was, has been accomplished for sure
Great video guys, by far my favorite channel on CZcams. Can’t believe you don’t have a couple hundred followers!
we're on our way!
You and a few other guys have turned me into a decent bartender. My wife thanks you, and I thank you. It's a rare event when I'm out somewhere and somebody makes a cocktail that impresses me. It happens, which makes it way more enjoyable. I try the thing, the thing is good, and I appreciate why. Then my wife asks, "can you make this at home?" Yyyyyup.
Glad to hear it :) That's what the channel is all about
Hell yes on more cocktails using amaros!
Oh baby I ALWAYS can get my hands on Hendricks, and our home bar currently has 2 (count 'em 2) bottles of Montenegro because it was a good price and came with an amazing Montenegro glass. The addition of coffee to this, is pretty interesting. There's a local distillery (MN) that makes a coffee liqueur I really like (DuNord-Cafe Frieda) that I might like to try in this. Of course there's danger in a cocktail I'd like to sip all day...
Truth be told, the first time I picked up a bottle of Campari I used it in a Jungle Bird. Sipped it and HATED it so much that I returned the bottle, so what you said is so true!
I didn’t have any Montenegro, so I subbed Amaro Nonino. Terrific drink!
Sounds delightful!
You're a good man Leandro!
You too Marius!
merci a toi
I've been doing a "Cafe Negroni" type deal with Mr. Black at work.
1.5 oz Tanq
1 oz campari
1 oz Mr. Black
flamed orange peel
Now if I can get my hands on some Mr. Black!
YES! It's sooo good!
Imagenarium:
1 egg White. (Use a normally sized egg).
3cl Lime juice.
3 cl Vodka
4cl Butterscotch essance (monin or similar)
4 cl Amaro (Ciociari
o Amaro, but Ramazzotti will do).
(And you can have some viol pearl/rom in a spoon as garnish and eat).
Already sent mine!
A cocktail made for world gin day:
cheers
I came up with a Negroni variation using Aperol instead of Campari. Aperol is one of my favorite liqueurs
Is it 30ml Gin, 30ml Aperol, 30ml Lillet Blanc? Its a delicious drink and we made some large aperol ice cubes with edible flowers frozen in it for the garnish. Good shout!
Aperol is a fantastic liqour!
I actually sometimes use it in Margaritas when I run out of Cointreau
@@razzi0718 oh. That kinda ruins the point, doesn't it? Margarita is a tequila sour basically, cointreau replaces the syrup. Aperol is kinda bitter
It tastes like Orange? you add Agave for the sweetness
@@eldenctlhulhu7278 It'd still be decent haha I worked at a place that decided to make margaritas as (45ml or 1.5oz) tequila and (45ml or 1.5oz) lime cordial shaken for $9 AUS hahaha I quit really quickly when they told me that that was the plan
Pirate on Adventure(Made directly in the glass):
- Fill glass with big ice cubes
- 1,5 oz of Captain Morgan Rum(the drink actually suits this rum the best)
- 1,5 oz of Safari(exotic fruit liquor)
- For the rest of the glass, add 1/4 of Coca Cola and 3/4 of Lemon soda(like Schweppes)
- Add a smidge of lime juice
- Finish off with a lime wedge garnish in the glass
Skål!(as you say in Danish)
PolaroidFreak 600 Sound absolutely horrible lol. Sorry :)
Yeah, sounds like it would be way too sweet for my liking, nevermind that I hate Captain Morgan and Coke like poison, haha! That said, people like what they like, and that's okay. Kudos on taking the time to mix your own cocktail creations and share your ideas with others, hope you keep experimenting and having fun!
Your love of mr. Black inspired me to make a cocktail with a local amaro called caffè amaro from J. Rieger and company. What is the best way to submit recipes?
Nice Mr barfly
i was watching ppl doing montenegroni and i was thinking they should replace sweet vermouth with campari, lo and behold that was this cocktail, minus the coffee liquer
A cocktail i made called a fro co. Its a frozen tom collins.
1 oz lime juice
1 oz lemon juice
1 oz 2 to 1 simple syrup
3 oz gin
Blend it up with a cup of ice to make it frozen and slushy
Add a small can of fever tree tonic water.
Perfect refreshment on a summers day.
This cocktail got the "Sapore Vero"
.
Mulholland Drive cuz I bet he be living up there, the Mulholland Gin came after
I wish Mr. Black's was available in my area.
Hey Leandro, I really love your content! I'm not a big drinker myself but I've been recently wanting to get more knowledgeable about cocktails so I have a few in my mind so I sound edumacated and sophisticated when I do go out to bars HAHA.
I was wondering, what's the name of YOUR bar? I'd love to visit it one day and try and catch you.
I work at Cole's French Dip in downtown Los Angeles
Pablo O'Brien
Put 0.75 oz Kahlua, 1.25 oz tequila , 1 oz lime juice. Shake well. Serve in an old fashioned glass or a longdrink glass filled with ice cubes and some wedges of lime. Top it with ginger ale (~ 1-2 oz) and garnish with a lime wedge.
Kinda looks like long island ice tea and is rather boozy if you only put 1 oz of ginger ale but its sweeter and has a coffee taste
I’ve been attempting an apple cinnamon type of cocktail and wanted to get a professional opinion, the recipe I created is as follows:
*The Jamaican Forestfire*
Torch a cinnamon stick and invert the glass over it to capture the smoke
- 1 1/2 oz Appleton estate (or any rum you have on hand)
- 3/4 oz apple juice
- 3/8 oz lemon juice
- 3/8 oz demerara syrup
-1 dash orange bitters
Quick shake, pour into smoked glass and top with apple wedge and/or pinch of cinnamon
the more mr black the better ;) curious if you tried their amaro.
Tequila penicillin
Same build as regular penicillin
Sub scotch for reposado tequila
Float mezcal instead of islay
Its tasty the tequila and ginger play well together
Tequilicillin
@@erinbenton9361 love it
I would've probably named this El Medico or somesuch thing if I had thrown it together. Going to have to try one, as a penicillin using Monkey Shoulders with a Laphroaig cask strength float is a favorite cocktail of mine. The only tweak I've ever really made is using Black Bottle or Black grouse for the body of the drink instead of the monkey shoulders, because I'm a sucker for peated whisky. A tequila/mezcal variation sounds interesting though, and tasty! The vibrant and spicy character a good tequila has mixed with the totally different smoke profile of the mezcal would be radically different from the whisky version for sure.
Leandro I have a question regarding creating cocktails: How do you decide if you serve a cocktail up or in a rocks or Collins glass with ice cubes or crushed ice?
you should ask yourself how are the ingredients best served? Some flavors are intense and need lengthening so soda water needs to be added hence a collins glass? does the cocktail evolve with more dilution? then a rocks etc..
I would happily trade in my day job to sling cocktails but sadly in New Zealand it's very poorly paid, even at the top end. So I continue to hammer away in the code mines.
Here's my suggestion cocktail which came out of mistaken attempt at the Japanese Slipper.
The Japanese Lilly
1.5 Oz Gin
1 Oz Midori
1 Oz Lemon
2 dashes (4 from Japanese dasher bottle) Orange Bitters
Shake over ice and serve in your finest coupe. Garnish with a cherry.
Name is because it's a variation of a Japanese Slipper which is my Mum's favourite cocktail and her name is Leslee but she is sometimes called Lilly by her uncles and aunts and children who can't quite get the S right.
How does the amaro Montenegro compare to amaro averna? Averna is readily available where I live
Appleton Rye
1.0 oz of Zaya Blended Rum
0.5 oz of Appleton Jamaican Rum
1.0 oz of Templeton Rye or Overholt Rye or Ritten House Rye (I prefer Ritten House)
1.0 oz of apple syrup
*Side Note* apple syrup: add a 1:1 ratio of apple cider to sugar to a sauce pan and boil until combined and simmer for 5 minutes with cut up 3-4 honey crisp apples (if you want to make it sweeter add about 3 tablespoons of honey to the mix). Strain into a bottle and separate the apples into a separate bag for garnishing.
Add to a mixing glass with 2-3 cubes of ice and stir per about 25-30 revolutions.
Add to a rocks glass with an ice sphere.
Garnish with a simmered apple in a pick.
Atsa Ma Sunset
2oz Gin - preferably Plymouth Navy Strength
3/4oz lime juice
.5oz orgeat
1oz grenadine
.5oz Creme de Cassis
Our large Italian family drink this as a family at our beach house as we watch the sunset.
The Red Buck:
2.5 oz Glenfiddich 12
1oz Cynar
1oz Carpano Antica
2 dashes Feegans (or orange bitters of choice)
Stir and serve in a coupe with an orange peel garnish
Maybe not the most radical cocktail creation out there but it’s a boulevardier variation that I really like!
Would Aperol be too sweet as a sub for the Campari? Amaro Montenegro isn’t cheap and I’d hate to ruin the cocktail with a lower abv sweeter aperitif. I find very few drinks that cI actually enjoy Campari in.
Uncle Colada
2oz OP J.Wray & Nephew overproof silver Jamaican rum.
1oz PineApple Juice
1oZ coconut water (Literally, the juice which is inside a coconut)
Some club soda for fizz
In a 14oz highball, place small pieces of cracked ice into glass, add first three ingredients, stir to combine, top with club soda.
Could you of Kahlúa if Mr. black is unavailable?
khalua is going to be a little bit sweet but you can definitely try it. Also just a barspoon of cold brew coffee and a dash of simple would it
I don't think I have ever seen Amaro Montenegro here in the Netherlands 🤔
The Silent Lilly
35ml silent pool gin (or gin of your choice)
25ml pink grapefruit juice
15ml lime juice
20mil juniper & star anise infused gomme
dash grapefruit bitters
dash egg white
garnish with grapefruit zest sprinkled on top of the foam
- ENJOY!
I like making my own coffee flavor liquors. Not liqueur, because I don't add sugar/simple syrup.
I add coffee to my rum, and sometimes I add cocoa nibs for that extra something.
It ends up being like a coffee extract, to the point that--if I wanted something a like extra--I'd just add it to some milk for a version of a latte. Foam the milk, and you are there.
You can make that into a "simple creation". Though, I don't know of any commercial coffee liquors... Or liqueurs that don't use sugar as a thickener/stabilizer; though, you can make it yourself, because it's simpler to make than simple syrup. It just takes time to infuse the coffee into the rum.
But, then again, why not just use "mister coffee" or "kaluha"?
I'll never understand that much Campari. I'd do .75 oz and another spoon of Mr. Black.
Can you add half an ounce of cold brew instead of the liqueur? For stronger flavor, less abv and sugar levels?
@Hasil Atkins more bitter taste of coffee than sweet, but thinking of it now, amari are generally more bitter than vermouths, so the whole thing will be quite bitter.
I'm going to try it this afternoon when I go to work with some cold brew coffee from Congo and amaro Montenegro and see
yes you can!
@Hasil Atkins it works great! You should try it!
Questioning the need to lift the ice and spill the cocktail... There's nothing caught under that cube. Swirling more than adequately mixes the entire cocktail. Any reason to do so?
I do it mainly because of old fashioneds and now has become a habit any time I Stir a rocks drink. Definitely not necessary for a Negroni LOL
Would Aperol be an OK alternative to Campari in this one?
Or don't bother?
Really any appetitivo would work Aperol included
@@TheEducatedBarfly Thanks :-)
Can I use Ramazzotti to sub out the Montenegro?
ooooh definitely be more bitter but why not?
are you lifting the ice with your spoon to check your dilution?
Yes
@@TheEducatedBarfly cool thanks

Amaro series.....when ?
C Hall soon! Question tho, what would you most like to see in an Amari series
The Educated Barfly preferably those Amari that are readily available in good ole USA ,
Whispers ''silencio''
“Everything is a variation on another cocktail” *makes a gin boulevardier*
Which sounds delicious.
It'd be awesome if you did some videos on just viewers' recipes...
I meant a couple hundred thousand! I guess i forget things too. LOL
Peter Marceau I know what you meant 😂
So... how many of these before you find Silencio, all the characters in your life shift to other similar yet somehow even more messed up people, the thing behind the dumpsters comes out, and the tiny tourists show up and laugh evilly?
I disagree. Given that 1. I'm very well trained when it comes to timing because I've been involved in music practically since birth and 2. I know a lot of bartenders that have accurate and precise counts. you definitely can be consistent with free pour.
Yes you can be somewhat accurate individually but if your bar team free pours your drinks are inconsistent drink to drink, bartender to bartender unless everyone trains constantly and no bar does that because it’s a pain in the ass.
Such a confusing movie, didn't enjoy it
Nice receipy
its one of those movies that takes a few watches
