The Origins Of Double Fisting With The Left and Right Hand

- The Left Hand was created by Sam Ross of Milk & Honey and Attaboy around 2006. It is a fantastic Negroni Variation utilizing Bourbon and Chocolate Bitters and just 3% changed from a Boulevardier... t]and if ya'll don't know about, you should learn about it cuz it's fantastic! Today we don't just stop there! We go on to make the Left Hand variation The Right Hand created by Michael McIlroy at Milk & Honey in 2008. This drink is a perfect example of the Gospel I'm always preaching, changing a base spirit changes the whole idea of a cocktail to the point where it is made into something wholly different. Small changes sometimes have massive impact! Now Go Get It!

I like the new editing and background music! It’s new to me at least.
In Sasha Petraske's book Sam Ross says it was made during the early days at Milk and Honey as part of the "Hand" line of drinks (obv right hand is rum, Tres Hands is Tequila and Mezcal, and the Smoking Hand is Islay and Highland Scotch) as a bourbon riff on a Negroni (the Boulvardier was not back in style at the time) and he wanted to try the newly released Bittermans Xocolatl Mole bitters. By far my favorite Negroni/Manhattan riff.
6:22 - "Leandro: Now we have red stirred cocktails!
Negroni: Am I joke to you?"
But seriously, great video and awesome variations on the Boulevardier! Chocolate bitters really are crazy good in cocktails.
I will make both of them
Hold them in both hands
and drink them both while alternating.
This reminds me of one of my old patrons who would always double fist drinks. He would tell people he has a drinking problem. The problem being that he has two drinks and only one mouth. 😅 Damn I miss working the bar. 🥃
Yup, I call it a balanced diet.....
Just a couple of days ago I discovered the right hand but instead of adding chocolate I add a bit coffee. Maaaaaaaaaaaan with the funk of the Smith&Cross that Negroni brightens so much up with the help of a tiny amount of coffee... The flavours fit so perfectly well!!! My absolute favourite drink!!!!!!!!!!
This video make anyone else want to experiment with substitutions? Both drinks sound great.
I really liked the effect of the triple view of stirring the drink.
Double fisting can mean so many things, BUT, These look great.
I've seen plenty of your videos, but the editing on this one is one of my favorites. Great content 🔥
I’m making these this weekend, and I cannot wait to taste them. Thanks for this awesome recipe video!
Alternative Title: "On the Origins of Double Fisting."
Yes!
Done!
He did it, the madlad!
@@TheEducatedBarfly Oh My God, I can't believe that happened! Keep making videos and I will keep drinking. 😂
This is amazing. 😅
Wooo I love the Left hand, for sure am going to have to try the right! Great Video guys!
hey Leandro - fabulous stuff. I am so happy to see the left hand: was introduced to an identical cocktail called the 1794 which became my favourite: same thing but with orange not cherry and either bourbon or rye. The chocolate bitters make all the difference as they fuse with the vermouth to create this caramel-y goodness smoothing off the bitterness of the campari. Always wondered why this is not more well known. yum yum
Music & editing on a whole new level lately! Nice!
Man, that Left Hand was good. Used Basil Haydens as that was what I had on hand… the chocolate bitters really do add a wonderful layer of flavor to this. Great fall cocktail. Thanks!
Woodford has a handful of really nice bitters - if you can get the spiced cherry, that one's really nice!
Looking forward to checking these out. Preferably side by side. Excellent for fall.
Nice and good looking drinks. Thanks for the new ideas. Cheers!
Marius, I really like the panel effect in the editing. 👍🏼
Loving the new edits and a rum and comparing drink? All I need to do is pick up a fresh bottle of vermouth and im in!
Interesting!! I’d love to see more videos of swapping out the base spirit and comparing!
Extra nice and smooth editing, especially at 3:06.
Definitely a couple of things to do on my list today... Plus! I totally agree about those Woodford Reserve Chocolate Bitters..
Oooh, I could definitely see the Left Hand melding perfectly with my Old Forester. I always get a chocolate flavor when drinking it so this would be a perfect use for it!
Make it friend, I just had one and it was very good, Old Forester worked well.
Not meandering at all. Very solid instruction. Good stuff.
Coincidentally, I made something really similar to a Left Hand last week! Added 2 ashes mole bitters to a larger Boulevardier spec (1/1/2) , just because I had them and liked the sound of it.
I’ve had the Left Hand before when I was trying a bunch of Sam Ross cocktails, it’s amazing how much the chocolate bitters transform it from your basic Boulivardier. I’ll have to make the Right Hand (or perhaps both...) this evening!
Right Hand is another great adaptation, I use Appleton Estate Signature Rum for mine, used both Bittermens and Angostura chocolate bitters too, both work so well for me, enjoy friend.
Any time I see that bottle of campari among the ingredients I'm incredibly tempted to just skip the video, because I absolutely loathe and abhor the stuff😅. But I'm gonna watch the whole thing, leave a like and this comment, because I wanna support you guys and the algorithm demands a sacrifice ^^
I feel just the same way. I made a stretch and made myself kind of like Aperol, but that’s the most bitter I will accept in a drink.
Try some other Aperitivo-style products perhaps? Contratto Aperitif is a bit less sweet than Aperol but not as bitter as Campari.
@Bob Barron Thank you for the tip, will try! :)
Never really liked campari until I had the left hand. This is now one of my top favorites
I used Angostura cocoa bitters, but I get a lot of cherry notes which pair well with the garnish
Ooooo can't wait to give these a try!!
For a moment I thought you had to drink them both at the same time one in each hand 😂
Love, love, love The Left Hand. Yum!
Smith & Cross is unfortunately not available in Norway... Thoughts on Plantation Xaymaca (Jamaican Rum)?
Both of these look very nice. Campari for Mayor!!!!!!
I like the edit with just showing the pours
Definitely making a right hand later!
Next interesting thing would be a comparison between different ratios...
Like right hand vs kingston
Have you ever tried using St George Bruto Americano in place of campari? I just started using it for my negronis and boulevardiers and I don't think I'll go back!! It's some amazing stuff
Not in place of but I have a bottle
Great cocktails BUT ... finding bitters is insane! Orange & Angustura are the only 2 I've ever found. This chocolate bitter is interesting & would be great try with the 1st one
Total Wine and More
Did the Right Hand recipe Smith & Cross, or is that just what you chose to use? If not, did it specify Jamaican rum? I'm asking cause I can't find any source that specifies what kind of rum to use beyond "aged rum." So I was curious if you had sources that specified
Right hand, left hand, yes please... One for each hand, perfect😃
Why the hazzle with the drops? Would be one dash already too much? Unfortunately I have a spray bottle for my chocolate bitters which makes it impossible to go with drops! However, one spray would be half a dash.
Nice :)
I believe there is also a “Tres Hand” with tequila and mezcal.
tequila AND mezcal?
I want to try doing .75 smith and cross and .75 bourbon....if it's any good we'll call it hand over fist
Wow
Leandro, would this work well with a choc-infused Campari, no choc bittters here :(.
Try it! I’m sure it’ll be great!
I enjoy meandering.
Is there a reason you crack the first ice before putting in the cubes? Increase the dilution?
Yes and yes
Nice concept! I will be enjoying the "Left Hand" while appreciating it with my right hand, then have a "Right Hand" and appreciate it with my left hand.. make of it what you want, it can't get dirtier than "the origins double fisting"... Leandro, why haven't you created the "Ambidextrous" yet? You know, some like the left, some like the right and some....uh.. like both! LOL
Now combine them both and call it The Ambidextrous 😆
Make a Joy Division next.
I love the Boulevardier but I miss chocolate bitters. What do I do? Can I replace it?
You can use a bar spoon of creme de cacao instead of chocolate bitters, I actually really like that version too.
@@David-mg8zu Sounds nice. Many is talking about creme de cacao. Maybe I should buy one. Thanks!
Boulevardier
Don't think I didn't notice the sticker on the orange. What is this Applebee's?
Had tip for perpetuating the expression "double fisting"
That was a masterclass clickbait.
Sorry, I’m too vanilla for this type of cocktails. This video only makes me want to make myself a nice Manhattan. :)
My right hand is... meh never mind
