Famous Prohibition Drink: Last Word & a Mezcal Variation | How to Drink

- The Last Word is a modern classic and bartenders favorite with roots in prohibition, what's not to love? Today I make a Last Word and spin out a variation on it on the fly.
The Last Word is a cocktail with countless variations, some of which you may not even know is a Last Word variation, for example the Paper Plane. It was invented at the Detroit Athletic Club during prohibition and was quite popular for a time. It faded into obscurity as the 20th century ground on though. In 2005 Murray Stenson, bartender at the Zig Zig Club in Seattle, was thumbing through a copy of Ted Saucier's Bottoms Up! (A cocktail guide from 1951) looking for something new / old to put on the menu. He shook up a Last Word and was hooked. The Drink traveled east to NYC in the hands of Audrey Saunders who put it on the menu at her Pegu Club in NYC (Great Bar, go there) and the drink was soon everywhere.
The coolest thing about the Last Word though is how well it works as a formula. You can easily swap out a couple of ingredients and wind up with a near perfect drink that's completely different from the original. Maybe dial in the ratios a touch and you're there. So in this one I made a Last Word and then spun out a variation on the fly, and tweaked that variation slightly. Don't have name for that drink yet, got any ideas?

How To Drink
Idea for HtD Last Word variation name: The Mexican Word
this chartreuse thing you offer us is greatly appreciated, barkeep
Call that last variation "the final statement"
How about a recipe incorporating cucumber?
La Ultima Palabra
Ya heard, with Perd: "I'm Perd Hapley, and today we're going to be consuming alcohol, which will in fact, make us drunk."
The man is a legend!
@@howtodrink good to know Greg is a fellow Perd-vert
Trevor Kennedy let’s never say Perd-vert again please.
Pfft, Perd Hapley, more like Turd Crapley!
Greg: "I'd love to have a color version of this cocktail book."
Me: "Yeah I guess that'd make it easier to get the coloring of the cocktails right."
Greg: "Because there's pinup gals in the margins!"
Both perfectly acceptable reasons
_A Man of Culture_
"Everything I'm telling you could be a lie."
*Now* you're telling us.
😂
He’s lying tho.
Now he needs to make a drink called The Cake is a Lie.
@@I_NeedCoffee I second this!
detroit means the three rivers in french? could be a lie. That's the strait story.
"And I am not working to a bottom line."
Since you were talking about reasons to round up, I was *sure* you were going to say "And I am not working tomorrow."
Same 🤣
"Yours, until the last flame dies, and all words have been spoken."
-Shin Malphur to You, as you journey forth into the unknown.
"yours, not mine" - Shin Malphur to Dredgen Yor
eh, was never a fan of the last word. Ill stick to my orchid. Speaking of, a Destiny themed episode might be pretty cool. drinks inspired from weapons or something?
Came looking for this comment.
@@piercewinter8799 the only drink I imagine is that diesel color drink Cayde had on the destiny 2 vanilla a story to remember trailer
Not a fan of tlw either. But you gotta admit it has some big yee haws vibes
The book references “here” because it was released as a publicity promotion for the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC. I think that is what Ted means by “here” being NYC. I picked up a 1962 original full color version of this book last week at a library book sale for $2.00(!) and it is truly awesome in its full color version! Highly recommend. Edit: “here” could also refer to Detroit as it’s not clear if the notes came from Ted or from the cocktail authors.
"it... might...be... garbage!" Sounds like it should involve a spinning wheel that picks ingredients at random
VelvetTeacake oh no.... Greg liked this comment.....
His reaction to the Ward 8 was pretty fun to watch, so it could be a thing.
Some kind of... Wheel of the Worst.
I think he liked the idea given the recent episodes 🤣
The Last Word is one of my favourite cocktails!
You’ve got great taste! Let’s do some stuff together!
@@howtodrink Name the time and place! DM or email me and we'll set it up.
Glen!!!!
Mine too... but it requires a garnish of a Leonardo maraschino cherry
I would love to see this!!!
Legit if you made "this might be garbage" a monthly patreon show I'd sign up in a heart beat!
The rye - rum - Irish cream liquor would def be garbage.
I would watch the SHIT out of that show.
Fun Fact: During prohibition bootleggers would drive trucks of booze over the frozen Detroit river into Michigan, and about 75% of all the liquor smuggled in was through Michigan.
I'm originally from Windsor (right across from Detroit) and the highschool I went to is in this old neighborhood where there was/is a massive distillery. There are tunnels underneath the school that supposedly run all the way to Detroit and have been there since the rum running days!
"Yours, not mine."
"It Could Be Garbage" sounds like the name of an Eric Andre sketch.
Which makes me think, you could make a series called "What if it was Purple?"
you should make a cocktail based on the eric andre show: everclear, stale tap water, and 2 dashes of liquid lsd. garnish with a nitrous canister and serve
What if it was GARBAAAAGE!?
I thought this was going to be Destiny themed but I'm game either way
Same. For the briefest of moments, I was hoping for a hip-fire capable hand Cannon and for Greg to go on for a few minutes on Dredgen Yor and Shin Malphur.
This is still very interesting, though!
"Yours…not mine."
The Chikage literally what i did lmao
Hahahahaha yes dude
I replaced the chartreuse with Galliano. Turns it yellow like an exotic:) Tastes great too. I need a little simple syrup.
There are a couple drinks in mass effect series that could prove challenging to you. In fact one of them is supposed to be toxic to many species I believe. I'm thinking absinth based maybe
You won't get the full effect unless you drink them with your eye
@@Janine.Najarian wow you saw that same exact video LMFAOOOOO
_Deus Ex: Human Revolution_ has a few cocktails in a bar location, I'm pretty certain these are ironically bad drinks.
*Slum Dog:* _"Had a rough night? Why not have a little hair of the Slum Dog that bit you? Half rum, half vodka, half beer. Remember -- If it smells like a dog, and tastes like a dog, it's probably a Slum Dog"_
*Shanghai Gut Punch:* _"Three measures 180-proof alcohol, a pinch of lotus pollen, and a drop of red food dye No. 40. The Shanghai Gut Punch... about as subtle as its name implies."_
*Golden Phoenix Sling:* _"Burnt out after a long day? Throw back a couple of Golden Pheonix Slings and you'll feel reborn. Ginsing extract, cough syrup, and a healthy dose of Saké kissed with Tequila (and some other things we'd rather not divulge). Just say "Sling Me!""_
FYI, Detroit was named after the Detroit River, which in French was called Rivière du Détroit, or River of the Strait, as it forms a strait between Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie
HTD 1: The Careless Whisper
HTD 2: The Devil's Advocate
Good names!
I see what you did there .
touch of malice
“That is what today is happening”... indeed it is master yoda... indeed it is
I had the Mezcal variety - with just the Gin switched out - at Muldoon's Patio in Houston. It was my first and now I keep all those ingredients in my bar at all times.
“It Could Be Garbage” sounds like the alternate title to Antiques Roadshow.
Thought at first glance "how will he make a drink about a gun in Destiny?" 😂
Gin Malphur
Honestly works with the mezcal variation
10:53 had me laughing out loud so hard. The way he looks, his inner disunity, that super crazy laugh and then out of nowhere a third cocktail appears. What a fantastic edit. I love it. Another great episode. I've been waiting a long time for the Last Word!
0:07 "and that is what today is happening."
Yoda - "Master of English Greg is."
amazing content
The name Detroit comes from the French word 'détroit' meaning 'straits'. 'Les trois' means 'the three'.
clever

I love the idea of "It Might Be Garbage". It reminds me of Sluggy Freelance, where a running gag was their local pub's "Drink Survivor Island". If you can find a way to make a Cheeseburgerita, my hat's off to you.
Hands down, one of my favorite cocktails, both in name, and because it's goddamn delicious.
I vote that the 'HTD Word#2' be formally named the 'I Have Spoken'.
This is the way
@@unboxedtravels This is the way.
So glad you did a video on this drink. It’s my favorite cocktail ever....
One of our favorite local bartenders hipped me to this bit of nectar a few years back. It’s literally imho the most balanced bit of tastiness that packs one heck of a wallop right in the kisser.
My absolute favorite cocktail. I had a variation with islay scotch and it’s absolutely dreamy
My favorite cocktail by my favorite bartender!
I love this channel, never miss an episode and I always look forward to the next one. Greg, what we need now is for you to put together everything into a cocktail book. Include all the ways you can make your own syrups, different types of glasses used for different cocktails, outline all the different utensils you use or need to make a great cocktail, maybe even add a list of what every home bar should have as far as different spirits and other ingredients. I hope you have an amazing day, and I will wait for the book. All the best kid...
Beautiful thumbnail pic. Probably one of the best I've ever seen...
I made the bee's knees for our new year's party, everyone loved it! Thanks 😘
These are two of my favorite cocktails!
You named the mezcal drink without knowing it. You called it The End Result. Perfect name for this one!
As someone who studies and teaches language for a living, I wholeheartedly approve of your sensible take on the mara-sheeno vs skeeno thing.
The Last Word with Mezcal is one of my favorite drinks ever. I've heard it called a Final Word. Never done it with the Ancho Reyes. Work really well just subbing the gin.
1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Lime Juice
1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Maraschino
1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Chartreuse
1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Vida Mezcal
The bar I went to called it "La Ultima Palabra" which is just the Spanish translation
Sir Gregory! Thank you, and cheers
Yaaaaaas! My favorite genre(?) of drinks!
I, too, and making every drink I can with mezcal and ancho Reyes lol
One of my favorite drinks!!
I’m stationed in the UK and ordered Chartreuse and Maraschino off of Amazon after seeing this video on impulse simply because I LOVE the way you host this channel. Can’t wait to test this new cocktail when the rest of the ingredients arrive tomorrow. Thanks for getting me into cocktails, man!
how'd it turn out?
Best tasting notes you have ever done. Bravo!
My favorite cocktail. Swapping the gin for mescal makes it an Oaxacan Last Word and it's delightful.
I was a member of the Detroit athletic club. Cool.
DEtroit!!!!! Love it prohibition gin came across the st clair river right out my front window. Love that I got some local culture!!! Thanks man and keep up the good work
Cant wait to try this - thanks so much!
Been waiting for a Detroit native cocktail. Great video!
Really nice blend here. It's makes a really good goodnight kiss from any bar.
Thank you for the ❤️, and the nice drink
I really began to enjoy this drink more when I made it to the original spec, resulting in a 1 oz drink that can be dispatched in a sip or two. At a 2.5-4 oz range, I always get too fatigued halfway through to finish it, and this is one that really needs to be COLD. I think its intent and purpose is right there in the name... its the final drink, refreshing but complex, to close out a night on.
You're so calming to watch
I'm 23 and am starting to pick up mixing as a hobby. It would be very beneficial to me and those like me if you attach a price range per bottle on your ingredients as you added them. Love your content -- you're more or less my go-to now whenever I want to mix/learn to mix something!
Ohh, boy! That Chartreuse and Maraschino is PRICEY! My advice, especially if you don’t want to annoy the spouse, is to pick one cocktail that you really want to try, and then slowly (very slowly) build out your bar by adding a new cocktail to your menu every other week or so.
I love this cocktail. Currently I work at a Mexican restaurant/bar and they a variation with mezcal too. It’s basically Mezcal, Green Chartreuse, Pineapple juice, Lime and Agave and it’s served on a rock glass with a big ice cube. It is call “La Ultima Palabra” that means The Last Word in Spanish. Personally I love both of them!
Watched the Prohibition video today and was looking for this vid. Great timing.
The crazy look he gets in his eyes when he is contemplating making the third drink is gold
Awesome content as always man. Thank you for putting these out
I love the mezcal variation. It's DELICIOUS!
One of my all time faves. Classic and fresh and spicy. Chartreuse is a banger
My friend made a variation of this with peated Irish whiskey and it was the best thing I’ve ever tasted.
I just applied the formula and did: Smokey Islay Scotch, Benedictine, Lime Juice, And Maraschino. I added an Absinthe rinse....Fantastic.
I can drink these, aviations, and French 75s all day. Love a good gin cocktail!
Caution: do not drink French 75s all day, unless you plan to do absolutely nothing the next day.
@@davidcassidy602 I hydrate between them and eat good clean meals too, haha! But yes, I meant it as a hyperbolic turn of phrase to quantify my love of a properly mixed classic gin cocktail. I don't actually pound gin and champagne cocktails all day of course.
We actually just made Last Word for the first time & really liked it. I didn't know what to expect but it was a very well balanced drink. Also really like the mezcal variations. I'll have to put them on my list to try. Cheers!
History lessons, vocabulary help, accessibility of ingredients. I'm here for it all!
I did miss the, "one big-one small-you know how I do." Catch line though.
Coming back to this video after you recommended this cocktail on Twitter. Your mezcal variation is close to a Naked and Famous (Mezcal, lime juice, Yellow Chartreuse, and Aperol) which is one of my current favorites. I also made a similar riff on a Negroni with Mezcal, Ancho Reyes, and Campari that turned out surprisingly good.
I have been making this drink for the past few months, I do know of a version called the last of the Oaxacan's that uses Mezcal its from a bar in California. Also there is a mockingbird variant that uses watermelon and jalapeno and its wonderful. Great video as always!
A mezcal last word does exist!!! And to be honest, I only substitute the gin for mezcal and keep everything else the same. It's really good. Another substitution for gin I regularly do is a Peat's word (seen in John Brown Underground in Lawrence Kansas by the wonderful Cammie). Use peated scotch (JBUG used Compass Box Peat Monster and so do I)
Holy hell that Mezcal variant #2 is amazing! Well done with the smoky and spicy. I didn't think I'd find a variant I liked more than the Final Ward, but here we are.
Man, I dig your show!
awesome video
I got into mixology because of watching you, tonight I made Blood and Sand, Corpse Reviver #2, and Bee’s Kiss. It was amazing.
the last word is the greatest shaken cocktail ever made
this was a really good one!
Hi Greg! I made the 2nd variation you made in this video with a locally distilled blanco in Portland, OR, and it’s also quite nice! The Ancho/chartreuse split was a nice touch 🤙
I miss videos like these, Greg. Videos about a cocktail, a bit of history, a little variation on the drink. This was GOLD-

While traveling I finally found a bar that had chartreuse and was able to try this drink after 2 years of searching. Then went down the street and found a bottle of chartreuse at a liquor store. Happy days!!
He is right. Definitely do Chartreuse with the Mezcal Last Word. Been making this for 3 years now as my favorite at-home cocktail to make
I can't drink because of meds, but cocktails are fascinating, especially cocktail history! Thank you Greg!!!
Made it last month. Awesome.
Videos like this makes me want to start drinking!
Felt like watching Bob Belcher defending his choice of 'taut'. Great stuff!
Just tried HTD Word #2 and I think this is my new favorite cocktail. Nice spin!
Just found this video and made the HTD #2. Game changer!
My favourite mezcal variant on the last word is the naked and famous
Mezcal, aperol, yellow chartreuse and lime juice
Its so good
Love from Detroit
Love the vid, was watching you on rimworld yesterday! Love it.
Ultima Palabra would have been a good name for the Mezcal variation . . if that didn't already exist as a different cocktail. Oh well. Love the Last Word, glad to see you finally tackle it.
The level of drunkeness in the intro is perfect.
Sweet vid, looking forward to the First Curse cocktail next week!
Yes!
My Mom, (RIP) and her bestie, (RIP) did a thing called the ‘last thing’ which was your drink but...joked about as the last thing after a party was...empty the trash or wash the dishes or check on the kids or ‘check(?!?) on your husband😏...etc, etc!! Even at 70+ they were still doin’ ‘the last thing’ and laughing 😂 about it! Thanx for reminding me🙂
The most notorious mezcal last word riff i can think of is the naked and famous (equal parts mezcal, yellow chartreuse, aperol, and lime). Your version seems delicious as well, will have to give it a go.
I did your Endgame swapping the Lagavulin for the Vida mezcal back on NYE and it worked very well! Called it La Ultima Palabra.
Totally did not expect that lime and cherry go well together. Sounds like something kids would come up with. But this drink works, man.
My family went to the Lexington cocktail lounge (St. Paul) to celebrate several birthdays this year, and my sister didn't know what to order so she said "I like x, y, and z, surprise me", and Andrew (the expert Bartender) brought her a mezcal-based Last Word variation. It wasn't quite the same, and I think he did end up using grapefruit instead of lime juice. But she loved it! She's not a fan of mezcal, but loved tequila, and tequila was one of the things she mentioned in her suggestions. I wish I remembered what the rest of the ingredients were, but unfortunately I do not...
Favorite drink :D. Looking to try your variation
I've been watching your show for some time and you never cease to make us laugh. I've also watched a few other "bartender shows" on CZcams and none come close to yours. Though I don't know if you've watched any from 88rising on Japan's greatest bartender. Very intense and the "sound effects" are hilarious (though I'm sure it's not meant to be that way. Perhaps parody?
The Last Word and its variations are high on my list of favorite cocktails! One I really liked was the Bad Word - replace Maraschino with Gran Classico.
The magic combination. Equal parts spirit, sweet, sour and herbal. Just watched that video a couple days ago
I created a mezcal version I called "Smokey Words" at my bar. Also did a Heated Words variation with green chili vodka instead of gin, a crushed Thai chili, a jalapeno wheel, and a few dashes of Thai chili bitters. Both were quite popular.
