The LAST WORD was created in the early 1920s at the Detroit Athletic Club. The cocktail was only popular for a few decades and was later published by Ted Saucier in his 1951 book, Bottom's Up.
A Seattle bartender revived the cocktail by placing it on his drinks menu. It's popularity helped the drink find its way onto the menu at the Pegu Club which cemented it's resurgence.
You can play around with the gin component too - sub in Irish Whiskey for a Dublin Minstrel or Mezcal for a Last of the Oaxacans but there are an endless number of riffs on The Last Word.

    1:23 Last Word
    3:24 Last Flight
    4:52 The Bywater
    6:56 Tasting
    INGREDIENTS
    - 22.5ml Gin (0.75 oz)
    - 22.5ml Green Chartreuse (0.75 oz)
    - 22.5ml Luxardo Maraschino (0.75 oz)
    - 22.5ml Lime Juice (0.75 oz)
    LAST FLIGHT
This cleverly named cocktail is a cross between two of my favourite cocktails - The Last Word and a Paper Plane.
    INGREDIENTS
    - 22.5ml Bourbon Whiskey (0.75 oz)
    - 22.5ml Green Chartreuse (0.75 oz)
    - 22.5ml Aperol (0.75 oz)
    - 22.5ml Lemon Juice (0.75 oz)
    THE BYWATER
An original cocktail of Chris Hannah - a veteran bartender that, up until a year ago, tended bar at French 75 in New Orleans.
Chris took inspiration from the Brooklyn and Jamie Boudreau's Amer Picon replica (bit.ly/amer-picon-replica). Here's a second easier recipe: bit.ly/amer-replica Chris prefers using Plantation OFTD in The Bywater, a rich overproof blended rum from Jamaican, Barbados and Guyana rums - it stands up to the complex herbal and vegetal profile of the Green Chartreuse.
Rich, subtle herbal notes and incredibly boozy.
    INGREDIENTS
    - 52.5ml Aged Rum (1.75 oz)
    - 22.5ml Green Chartreuse (0.75 oz)
    - 15ml Amer Replica (or Averna) (0.5 oz)
    - 7.5ml Velvet Falernum (0.25 oz)

Holy moly that third cocktail was potent...!! Pretty sure it's over 4 standard drinks! That overproof rum really does stand up to the (usually) dominant Green Chartreuse resulting in some big bold flavours!! Don't forget to sub to my weekly email: stevethebartender.com.au/newsletter

hi steve, had a question / request for you.
i recently was in spain visiting on of my friends who is a bartender aswell, and he took me to the licor 43 factory which looks amazing btw, and there were a lot of premixed bottles of licor 43 ready for us to try which was really cool but my favorite one by far was the Fresco, its very simple and so refreshing, its made up with a little bit of licor 43 , a bit of lemon juice and carbonated water. really easy for big batches at parties... but id really love to see it featured in one of your videos! ik

Love it! Love Green chartreuse and love The Last Word.., but Steve your probs with the limes in the Last Word illustrate one of the issues with lime-based cocktails - how to have a nice, soft, juicy lime ready to go. So, for me, when limes are expensive, or like yours were today, I go for a Shanghai Gin instead. Also has the advantage of my favourite cocktail proportions (30/30/30/30 - who are we kidding with this 22.5ml - OK, that’s what we say, but does anyone actually do that??).

    1/2oz suze

I'll take yours if you don't want it :D. In all seriousness, there's no shame if you don't like it. It sure doesn't taste like anything else under the sun. If you still want to keep experimenting with the stuff, you could try a Neptune's wrath, where it's only used as a garnish and accent note.

Have you tried the Last Flight? Seems like the Aperol should mellow the Chartreuse a bit, maybe start out with more Aperol and/or lime and less Chartreuse to begin with? This is kind of how I got myself used to Campari, found something where it wasn't so dominant and just played around with that.

@baloonman5 @Matarro1980 Cheers for the advice folks! Honestly got through 2/3 of it and had to give it up. Even if I found something that I could stand it'd still never be worth forking out for a new bottle!

Finally! Something I can use my chartreuse for other than sore throat medicine. Thanks!

Steve, have you tried Becherovka, herbal liquer from Czech Republic, really popular here in Europe?

Are there any cocktails using Rumple Minze? I'm no longer a shooter kind of guy but still enjoy peppermint schnapps.

Hello! 22.5 ml is not .75oz! Please use real units when mixing your cocktails, they where all developed using oz, use oz; and yes I understand it's really about ratios, but if you want your cocktail to fit your glass you need to be mindful of volume.
