- Let me and the House of Angostura introduce you to some drinks that call for large pours of Bitters- no dashes or drops in here. #ad
Shop spirits for your cocktails: bit.ly/H2D-3
Angostura Bitters are a well known bar essential, in addition to tons of drinks calling for dashes and drops of that deep red nectar of the gods, the very definition of the word "cocktail" sort of requires their inclusion. With that established, are there drinks that call for larger amounts of Angostura Bitters as a central foundational component? In fact there are, and this episode is about three of them.
Giuseppe Gonzalez created this drink while working at beloved brooklyn cocktail bar Clover Club.
*Trinidad Sour*
.75 oz or 22 ml Lemon Juice
1 oz or 30 ml Orgeat Syrup
.5 oz or 15 ml Rye (Greg uses Rittenhouse)
1 oz or 30 ml Angostura Aromatic Bitters
1 Egg white
Dry shake
Add Ice and shake again
Double strain into a glass
Further demonstrating the maleability of the Last Word Format the Bitter Last Word simply swaps the gin for Angostura Bitters and it works marvelously.
*Bitter Last Word*
.75 oz or 22 ml Lime Juice
.75 oz or 22 ml Luxardo Maraschino
.75 oz or 22 ml Green Chartreuse
.75 oz or 22 ml Angostura Aromatic Bitters
Shake over ice Strain into glass
And for a tropical, tiki-esque departure, I am blown away by this AngoColada from Zac Overman at Fort Defiance
*AngoColada*
2 oz or 60 ml Pineapple Juice
1 oz or 30 ml Lime Juice
1.5 oz or 45 ml Cream of Coconut
.5 oz or 15 ml Overproof Rum (Greg Uses Forres Park Puncheon Rum)
1.5 oz or 45 ml Angostura Aromatic Bitters

Teach us how to make your favorite rum runner
Some europe friendly affiliate/purchase links would be fantastic! Have been trying for a while to get the big boy bottles of angostura bitters, but they are just not available to me :(
Brotha, proud of you. Look at your channel, I remember when you started!!! The grind is a beautiful thing, crush it, get the bag, best to you and your family 🙏🏼
For the Godzilla vs king movie coming out what drinks would you make?
Pours half an ounce, spills half an ounce. Thats what i call balanced
As all things should be
He didn't spill thaaat much ^^'
It's b roll. The drink he drinks is accurate, the one for the camera is just for show.
@@aesop2733 Yes I think he did say it clearly in a video once, this is a show after all (and a pretty cool one at that)
Did you see that he completely missed with the lime on the Bitter Last Word? Lmao
On my third bottle of bitters, my husband protested and said I already had some at home. The recipe called for orange bitters and I was out. I said I didn't have the kind I needed, and he countered with, "They're all the same."
Later, I mixed him a drink and he grimaced. "What is that???"
"Grapefruit bitters. Still think they're all the same?"
He doesn't complain about my ingredient purchases anymore.
Husbands will choose to die on the darnedest hills
Is he still your husband?
@@GregoryMom 🤣🤣🤣🤣most likely not

The fuck? That's like saying chocolate milk and strawberry milk are the same because "they're both milk".
Angostura is the sponsor....
Greg: spills slightly less than normal out of respect
I think he made up for it with that one lime squeeze. And thus the universe has returned to balance.
TIL even big bottles of Angostura have an oversized label.
One thing! Just one thing! Please tell IT to me: WHY tf do I have so many fans even though no CZcamsr is unprettier than I am? WORLDWIDE!!!! WHY??? Tell me, dear sabke
@@AxxLAfriku I feel like you have me mistaken for someone? Take a breath, dude. It'll be alright.
@@SableGear AxxL's entire damn trick is being an uncalled for prick in random comment replies, and using it to garner attention to himself.
Imagine if Justin Y did nothing but act like the center of the universe and gloat about having two girlfriends or something. That's AxxL.
Fun fact: that’s because when Angostura was starting out as a company one brother was in charge of buying the bottles, and the other was in charge of buying the labels. They didn’t collaborate on size at all and ended up with labels too big for their bottles. They have kept the too big labels going all this time just to honor the history of one funny, happy accident.
@@BELillicious They also became instantly recognizable
Greg needs to make a bar book. I'd buy that shit so fast
Call up Binging with Babish and figure out who produced his cook book...
I'd be surprised if he wasn't slowly accumulating OG drink formulations for a book
This is a great idea, although I know a lot of the drinks he makes are not his original ideas. Then again, Babish tends to adapt recipes from other chefs so I'm not sure what the process is like for cocktails. Hmmmm...I'd say look into it Greg!
I'd like this twice if I could
He wrote one, but he spilled so much booze on it while making drinks that it dissolved
9:03 seems like a wasted opportunity to call it the "Bitter End"
I was thinking the same thing. Guess I'm not as creative as I thought I was.
@@sillybear25 At least you’re more creative than the person who came up with the actual name...
I’ve actually made a cocktail that’s a riff on the Last Word called the bitter end lol. I did not have an oz of a angustora though that’s for sure
"Don't you mean oil?"
"I mean black blood of the earth!"

Welcome to Not Just a Dash with Greg.
I know Matty Matheson doesn't drink anymore, but I now need him and Greg to swap shows for an episode.
Hahaha.. Nice!
My favorite part of How to Drink is seeing Greg’s hand gestures
That’s an Italian trait most of my family dose those hand gestures.
The higher the hands go, the more he likes the drink XD
"i'm not allowed to smack tables" proceeds to smack the table
me before this episode: a full shot of ango....what the hell are you? do you need help? get a therapist bro.
me after this episode: thank you so much to Angostura for sponsoring my favorite cocktail how-to show! best bitters in the whole world. a shot of Angostura, that'll put hair on your chest. what a novel way of using such a classic cocktail ingredient.
Wuddup Laura
Fun fact, in Denmark they have a brand of bitters called Dr Neilsons. It's sold in a 700ml bottle and the Danes shoot it
"at some point we will have friends again"...best line heard today.
Totally made me water up
"Black blood of the earth" would be a crazy good name for a cocktail. Maybe something with a peat forward Scotch, angostura bitters and walnut liqueur?
Its the name of a coffee product.
I don't understand how you spill so much, it's truly a talent
At this point he’s gotta be doing it for show
It's b roll. It's not the one he drinks.
@@aesop2733 b roll?
@@bardofboars7226 the close up footage of pouring that's spliced into the video would be considered 'b roll'. It comes from a time when shots like that would require two different rolls of film in order to edit them together. I don't really know if it's being shot at a different time from the rest of the video, or if its just a different camera
The Trinidad Sour is a classic. You'd really think a whole ounce would make the drink more bitter, but it's actually much less than you'd expect. You really get the individual notes of cinnamon, allspice, different barks, roots, peppers, and spices, etc.
I just made one, and I came on here to see if anyone actually liked this drink. It was terrible. Then I read your comment, and by drinking it slower and taking the time to let it settle on the palate really changed the experience. It is very complex - and I'm starting to warm up to it. :)
A modified version of your Klingon blood wine: 1 part each, wray and nephew over proof, angostura, lime, and orgeat. Changed my life.
That sounds both horrifying because of how much alcohol is in it (yes I know Klingon blood wines reputation, which also horrifies me) and sounds fucking delicious at the same time. Well done!
@@varietystreamer might wanna fix your triple comment my dude
@@ARSZLB I only made one comment. No idea why it tripled up on me. Good looking put. Much appreciated
@Ben Kerley it's funny. Reddit does the same thing
This dude literally got sponsored by angostura, that in itself is a notable achievement(edit: if you liked this comment, you must donate 1 bag of dog/cat food to your local no kill shelter)

I'll be honest after the madness of the "Manhattan Matrix" I saw the word "energy" and instantly thought you were going to make some God forsaken abomination with energy drink and bitters. I'm glad that was not the case.
I know what you mean
The thumbnail had me thinking we were going to watch the last of his mental faculties draining from his body after the matrix
Cursed Cocktails anyone? 👀
@@CommentGirl12 Cursed indeed. Angostura bitters + Red Bull for a real "Red" Bull? I'm not gonna do it but if someone out there is already drunk enough have at it.
Congratulations on the Angostura sponsorship.
Surprised you didn't call out your Klingon Blood Wine recipe, which is my sole reason for keeping a full 16oz bottle of Angostura on hand at all times.
My favorite parts of how to drink are the comments about the drinks he makes, and the slow motions of all the ingredients mixed with the normal speed sounds of them. Major props to him and the editor. Love the channel❤️
This is one of my favorite episodes to date! I have a neurological condition that can halt my digestive system and my neurologist started having me take shots of digestive bitters before meals because she said the big pharma medications are just miserable. Turns out, I have quite a taste for bitters and I’ve found quite a few that work really well for my digestive whoas.
But, what I particularly love with Angustora is that deep gentian flavor that’s so distinctive. I’ve been known to sort of keep a weird baby bar cart stocked with Campari/Aperol/etc, Bénédictine, several bottles of Agustora, one bottle of either gin or tequila, one bottle of Old Grand Dad bonded, and maybe some ginger beer or tonic and I’m sort of set. Definitely have just done bitters on ice for pure recreational reasons. 😎
Also VERY excited to try a Trinidad Sour. The egg white addition looks perfect.
I should have waited to be at the Nelsen's Hall to try the Angostura shot. That way I would have at least joined a club. Now I just made weird faces during my bitters episode. This stuff comes with a dasher for good reason!
Considering how popular the Yakuza series has gotten recently and considering how much drinking is a part of the game, ever consider trying to review all the highballs and other drinks in it? Obviously not all in one video lol.
Honest to god, the main drink I still make, enjoy and requires A LOT of angostura bitters is your own Rusty Anchor you made for your golden girls episode. I even bought a bottle of Drambuie just because of that. You are a main inspiration to me and get me through these hard covid times. Love from the Netherlands
I'm glad you've told people to really hold tight during a dry shake. The first few times I dry shook, the drink mostly ended up in my face (much to my wife's amusement!)
🤣🤣🤣
Rittenhouse Rye has easily become my absolute favorite Rye Whiskey.
When I first tasted it, the flavor reminded me of being 10 years old with my dad in the woods, on a cold November morning, going deer hunting, smelling the scent of the dirt and nature around me. Standing on top of the hill on our property, with the moon shining bright overhead and you can just barely see the sun trying to start peaking over the horizon. Climbing up into the tree stand and waiting the next 30 minutes or hour until the sun comes up.
A very nostalgic flavor to me. Absolutely love that whiskey.
Woooo, I get hyped everytime a new HTD video is posted. Especially now that I'm 21 lol.
There is a mexican líqueur called yolixpa made in puebla that can replace chartreuse, it tastes pretty similar, the only difference is that is a lot lower proof, but actually I think I like it better
Yolixpa Tulips
Now THAT'S a Sponsor! Good job!
The Trinidad and Angostura Sours are two of my absolute favorite cocktails.
Ango sour is my absolute favorite cocktail. I do a riff with peychauds, Agricole, tepache syrup and lime.
Just talking with a friend about how much we love bitters and then this pops up. Thanks so much for bringing the Trinidad Sour to my life. Epic drink.,
For a garnish on the Bitters Sour, how about a dusting of ground allspice, seems like it would fit.
The Gen-Y Colada. All colorful, bright and sweet up front with an undercurrent of lingering bitterness.
Just got on break at work. And this was uploaded as soon as I got in my car. Thank you h2d gods 🙏🙏🙏
Hey just want to say hope everyone is having a good day
Thanks, you too
Thank you, you too!
We need a “Greg abroad” series once travel restrictions are lifted. Would love to see him interview bartenders/try signature cocktails at famous bars!
Every episode would open with my heavily medicated body being deliriously wheeled off a plane not knowing how I got there. Because of my “dislike” of flying.
@@howtodrink hey “flying is safer than driving” or so they say. You could make a game out of finding out which one is the Air Marshal!
I just made the Trinidad sour, holy cow, that’s awesome
When I was a kid a friend dared me to take a massive swig of Angostura bitters and that's how I permanently damaged my taste receptors.
Would love to see you invent some more pop culture cocktails.
Your camera work is incredible, and you truly are phenomenal at describing the flavors
I've been using Angostura bitters a lot recently to make a very simple non-alcoholic drink. I just add about 10 dashes of bitters to 12oz of root beer (preferrably the slightly fancier stuff, like Virgil's or something). It tones down the syrupy sweetness that soda can have, and it really amps up the herbal flavors.
Angostura bitters are alcohol
@@pauldi7268 like, barely.
A new video from Greg is a wonderful surprise. Cheers Greg!
4:10 I noticed that Big Trouble In Little China reference, absolutely loved it too.
I was amazed how much I like a Trinidad Sour the first time I made one.
I always enjoy your videos and I have been for over a year! I love the way you film and frame your videos

Great stuff. Love the little history bits.
LOVE that color on the AngoColada
Love your show, long time watcher! I work in a craft cocktail bar and definitely have used drinks from your videos. Thank you for being awesome to watch!
Great one Greg! These drinks are totally trippy. The vibrant opaque finished colors are amazing
I bought literally every book on your recommend list! And I've been binge watching every episode for the past two weeks! Your channel is F-ing awesome. I actually spent money 20 years ago to go to bartending "college", never got a job out of it and I've learned WAY more watching your show than I did with their course. Please, keep up the great work!

Finally cocktails with Greg sized pours! These look fantastic!!
This is one of my favorite episodes so far. I had never even considered using bitters as a main ingredient in a drink. Wild
I often just put 5-6 dashes into 8oz of lemon lime soda. Its a great come into from doing yard work at noon.

Maaaan, I'm so happy for you greg that's a well earned and amazing sponsorship
So glad to see the return of the under-light! Great episode Greg, you're one of the few CZcamsrs where I actually look forward to your sponsored episodes to see how you'll riff on the request.
The best type of bitters. Sooo much flavor
Upon recommendation I tried and loved the Trinidad sour, it was excellent. Thank you for the video as always
After watching the video I went out to buy supplies for the Trinidad Sour. Wow! So good!
Gosh Greg. The concept that folks don't like you and this show is insane. I love you very much.
I’m so glad you did this episode.... the Angostura Colada is one of my favorite cocktails! The “Trinidaddi Issues” featured in Minimalist Tiki is another bitters-heavy favorite drink of mine. Bravo!

I'm so glad you did this, because I love angostura bitters! I sometimes add it to coffee.
I adore bitters - I add them to all kinds of beverages. Please do an episode comparing some of the various craft bitter brands.
Thank you Greg! I went to the Speakeasy Fin and Tonic in VA and ordered the Trinidad Sour and learned this is in my top 3 favorite drinks now. SO dang good! Love the history presented in most episodes! Thanks again!
Trinidad Sour sounds amazing. I love experimenting with my bitters, angostura especially. Great video
This was a fun one. I think I'll have to try all three of those cocktails.
The egg white in the trinidad sour is nothing short of genius. Thanks Greg!
I'm surprised you didn't try a shot of Angostura to "establish a baseline"

Just recently fell in love with the Trinidad Sour. Easily has become one of my favourite drinks. It’s so surprisingly good.

The absolute dream sponsorship.
Nice episode and congrats. I have some experimenting to do...
I'm 41 and bought bitters and simple syrup for the first time because of you! Adding that to my new find of Blackened American Whiskey (met the distiller, got a selfie and a signature!!). 2 shots whiskey, one shot simple syrup, 4 dashes Orange Angostura Bitters, one orange peel, one giant block of ice.
