Just one correction, at 8:04 you say "Zagreus describes nectar …" but the in-game codex is actually written from the perspective of Achilles, which explains why he mentions he's only had a few chances to try it, as Zagreus is a god who could probably easily get his hands on it to drink it, Achilles is 'just' a shade who wouldn't typically be allowed it.

    How I understand the main difference between Rogue Like vs Rogue Lite:
    Rogue Like = When you die/lose/game over, you start over COMPLETELY. AKA, Permadeath. You don't keep any items or money or XP etc. Think FTL or Binding of Isaac.
    Rogue Lite = You generally keep some things when you fail. In Hades, you keep your darkness, gems, diamonds, ambrosia etc, while losing gold and boons.

    • @IAMDRMERVRENBARRON
      @IAMDRMERVRENBARRON Před 3 lety +17

      Rogue-likes are games like the original 1980 Rogue game. the original dungeon crawler style game. Such as Hack and Moria from the same era, and more recently, titles like Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup.
      Rogue-Lites are pretty much anything else that spawned off the permadeath, normally randomised layout mechanic, and then later expanded into semi-permadeath like Hades shows, or Sunless Sea/Skies, to even management like games such as Cultist Simulator.
      It's like how early FPS games were called Doom-Clones until it became a semi obsolete term now somewhat replaced recently by the term "boomer shooter", which is looser than the original, but still helps describe the general feel that's expected.
      Most of the Like vs Lite argument is really over how similar the title is to the the 1980 Rogue title it should be for the "Like" suffix to apply.
      And it doesn't help that they're barely distinguishable between each other when spoken in my accent.

    • @axelolord
      @axelolord Před 3 lety +13

      FTL and BoI are rogueLITEs too, not roguelikes.
      The distinction is much easier to underatand if you think of one distinction- roguelites have meta progression. It might be with metacurrency like in Hades, it might be with progress unlocks like BoI.
      Roguelikes are ALWAYS the same. You could start a fresh copy of a game or one with 1000hrs game time and the game balance and chances will be exactly the same, only thing that affects gameplay is likes is skill and experience.

    • @CadoonTube
      @CadoonTube Před 3 lety +2

      I'd say FTL and Binding of Isaac kinda skirt the line though, as you unlock more items and levels/content permanently even after losing a run. You don't start the run with better items, sure, but in the case of isaac you have greater potential for stronger runs and unlock stronger characters the more you play, and even permanently get a D6 for Isaac at a point. For FTL you get different starting ships and potential events, which is harder to say is a straight upgrade, but still muddies it a bit from being a pure rogue like.

    To explain the difference between Rogue-like and Rogue-lite, it has nothing to do with turn based vs real time. A Rogue-lite game has progressive upgrades the carry between runs eg the mirror of darkness in Hades. Rogue-like games have you start from scratch each time you start a run, for example The Binding of Isaac falls under this category.

      I know 6 months old post but more for people who are responding later.
      Greg is referring to the original definition of roguelike where it does require it to be turn based. (Rogue, nethack, ADoM, DCSS, ToMe, etc..). Everything in the game updates at the same time. If you move, every enemy moves/attacks/etc... Things were broken down by time/turn. So if you move and that action takes 5 turns and an enemy can attack every 1 turn then you would get hit 5 times every time you moved. The idea is you should be able to sit back and take as much time as you need to figure out how to get out of the situation you're in.
      Most ARE permadeath but it's not a requirement (Elona for example does not have permadeath).
      Of course most people don't know this anymore and that's fine words change. The issue I have is if you look up roguelikes you're going to get only games of the modern definition. There's no way to lookup games that follow the old definition and there are no other words we have for it. So unless you know the game exist you won't find it.
      This is a huge issue because it's a genre that is still very much played and new games are coming out every year or being updated that no one will hear about it because there's no way to look up games in the genre.

      Bumbu Rum has a creme version that is basically like rumchata mixed with irish cream liquor. Just that over ice is pretty great. It's got some great vanilla flavors and a bit of muted spice notes hiding amongst the cream. The disturbing thing is that the alcohol presence doesn't really change much if you add in almost an equal part of a proofier rum. Anyway, Bumbu Creme with a coffee liquor, some chocolate bitters, and a twist of orange would be great. Not exactly low-proof, but you don't need to drink a whole lot of it to experience the flavors. I think that's actually more important than finding drinks that border on mocktails. An alternative would be to get a nut-milk bag and make a milk clarified punch of some description. There's plenty of recipes on youtube for making various milk clarified punches, along with tips and tricks for tuning the milk clarification process.

    Man, I love your channel for how clean, well-produced and entertaining it is. The host is charismatic, the content is widely varied, and it's clear that you put a lot of effort into your production.
    Which is why, after a few months of watching you, it's starting to really drain on me how you guys practically never change your background music. You can be using music to set the mood of your drinks so much, and it seems like instead of putting any effort into your sound production you just copy-paste Savoy Special and drag it across a half-hour or whatever time.
    I get that it's a staple piece of yours but personally I think that at least the slightest bit of variety would do your show well. Again, this is only coming from a place of a fan who loves your content, and I hope you don't think I'm coming off as antagonistic.

    Using actual nectar (possibly from a pomegranate, passion fruit, or apple for origin sake, although apricot, lemon, strawberry, or other sources would likely work wonders as well?) to add a soft sweet fruity glow to the nectar may be an idea

      Diablo 1 was initially heavily inspired by Rogue and a lot of the genre's classics, like Nethack and Angband. It was initially turn based. Took 'em a few months to switch over to a real time engine. You can still see the Rogue influences though - random item modifiers, the need to identify items, random level generation, hardcore mode, and just how flexible build-wise the classes were in the original game.
      It was basically a roguelite before that was a common term.
