  • How to remove rust. Ospho rust converter is what I am showing in this video. I had some places on the door of the 1990 Ford F350 that I thought might still have some rust and corrosion that I really couldnt get to very well, so Ospho rust killer to the rescue. I also show how the frame on my 1994 F150 has held up over the years with the use of Ospho.

    I've been using this for decades. I always come back 24 hours later, and either do another coat if it's bad or reactivate it with some more Ospho then wipe it with water and then air dry and DA it with 80 grit. Years ago I had to put a junkyard fender on a customer's old Ranchero. It was the only fender I could get, they didn't make them back then. It was bad surface rust from the car burning down then being scrapped. I completely stripped and Ospho'd the fender then went over it with 80 grit, then etching primer and painted the car. I was kind of worried about that fender though. I still see the Ranchero around to this day and the fender looks fine. That really sold me on that stuff. That was a nasty fender when I got it. I use it all the time but I do neutralize it with another coat of Ospho then immediately a water wipe down. I won't paint right onto Ospho residue.

    Greetings from Northern Vermont! Been using Ospho for years and it does work great. Not to be off topic, but most of that rust could have been prevented with oil spray rustproofing. I have been oil spraying my vehicles since the 1990's up here in Vermont and my 1997 K1500 suburban still looks good with litter rust on the frame and body. There are many great oil petroleum based products on the market, but , ATF, Motor Oil, Bar & Chain oil etc all do fabulous job. Spray any of these oils INTO enclose box sections, rockers, doors, pinch welds ...all enclosed sheet metal areas. For the OUTER Frame and suspension sections that are exposed, heat bar and chain oil in an electric crock pot, add some WAX and apply it with a 3M Rocker Schutz type gun at 40 -80 PSI.. Best time to apply the oils is Spring , because the warmer weather expands the metal and allows the oil toe creep, wick and penetrate. It's most important to soak all the inner enclosed sheet metal areas with thin oils like ATF, Motor Oil, B&C oil etc.. Good Luck!!

    Hey Jon,
    The F-150 frame looks like it about new. Stuff really seems to work great. It make one think, why doesn’t the auto manufacturers just make the frames rust resistant. We can do it but there doesn’t seem to be a necessity from them. Make the doors, tailgate, wheel wells all rust resistant. Years ago people said it would put the auto shops out of business. Didn’t really buy that. Now it’s all panel replacement. Oh well, really good job on that.

      The manufacturer Kleen-Strip claims it doesn't have any latex-like material . Some other conversion primers do have a latex-like material, and the one I used looked like milk. Different than the greenish translucent liquid of the Kleen-strip brand. Conceening the Kleen-Strip, after painting on the converter and waiting overnight, I use a scuff pad to wash off any residue. This ensures only well-bonded phosphate is left. Then let that dry and oil-based enamel over that ( or oil-based primer ). Works very well and never peels....been 20 years and it's perfect.

      @borna430 Před 2 lety +3

      Ospho direction doesn't mean it works for all paints. Ospho converts rust to Iron phosphate. But your paint may not like that acidic environment. For example painting epoxy primer over ospho means you are screwed big time. always the best case is to neutralize Ospho. Meaning once dryed, apply ospho again wait a few mins and rinse it with water and immediately dry it.

    • @kitjasabsgabs1830
      @kitjasabsgabs1830 Před 2 lety +1

      @@borna430 That's what I do except for the scrubbing with scuff pad, not for sanding or whatever but more for complete acid removal. Cause ein the car game that's the first step, spraying epoxy to seal, do body work, sealer can't with epoxy, coat with urethane primer then base and clear. But that's on a 40k restoration. I just do epoxy then base coat. I watched a video of a test of ospho and the tester said it didn't work well and then that's where this got started for me. I tried to tell him that using on a diff on a truck is a ok test if it was cleaned and prepped right. I've used it for years and if it's a clean dirt, oil, silicone etc free surface and not get rid of all the rust, cause that's the point is to convert it not sand it all off, it works just about the best I've seen in 20 years. Some of the evapo rust is good for small parts and time to soak but for a frame etc hard to do that. There's way to thicken up the ospho and make it stick. That's my only complaint. Like naval jelly buy way stronger concentration of phosphoric acid. I've never tried tannic acid but seems to work well from videos. Hard to tell cause we don't see the entire process, just what the content creator wants to show. Thank you for your time. Have a great week.

    I watched the whole video while my wife and son were bothering me. I see so many different opinions I just need one. I have a 89 bronco I’m trying to make last as long as possible. After you apply ospho do you wash it off after? So you just paint straight on it, do you wipe it with something? Everyone says different things, that’s the problem with the internet. I just need 1 person to tell me what they think is right.

    • @bjusticeforever
      @bjusticeforever Před rokem

      Neither. It converts the iron-oxide to iron-phosphate, which is one heck-of-a primer. Imagine a primer that doesn't just coat (like regular primer) but a primer that bonds on a molecular level. I made a mistake once on a trailer while painting and thought I'd just sandblast it off. BIG MISTAKE. I thought I'd NEVER get it all off!

    After applying in a badly scaling battery box on a tractor, I was not able to cover it up and it was rained on several times. Came back a couple weeks later to find awful white powder build up instead of black hardened coating ready to be painted.
    May be a mistake but today 12-2-22 I have reapplied another coating of OSPHO right over the power. This time the tractor is under a covered shed. It will be damp during rains but will not likely get the waterfall itself. So, we'll see what happens. I hate rust and it has to go. I hate this white chalky powder just as bad. Somebody did not take care of preventive maintenance on this tractor and I have to try to save it. Anybody with corrective action idea or experienced this white powder transformation and fixed it please chime in. Thanks !
