I use an old bed sheet to soak it down. Works real well and fast and easy.
Good stuff ...I used it myself in a dip tank out of a 50 gallon storage bin. Cracked me up " don't tell I used up the vinegar". Good work.
Thanks, it does do the job. ✌️
that's really cool it worked.. when you kept saying it smelled like salad dressing I chuckled inside remembering that smell
as a child at my grandmothers house in the bathroom. thank goodness for modern hygiene products.
😆, thanks for checking it out Grady
Works well, but you do have to neutralize the vinegar with a water and baking soda solution immediately afterwards or you'll get flash rusting again. Nice job.
Good advice, thanks 😊
Billy what ratio of water to baking soda please
@@shaveclassy9986 I guess it's not all that much, but baking soda is pretty cheap, I guess I would add one 1-pound box to 5 gallons of water maybe? Something like that should work well. If you add baking soda to vinegar you can actually watch it fizzle as it neutralizes the acid in the vinegar.
@@BillySBC thankyou
Great tips BW. Hood looks way better
Thanks Trevor, appreciate it
That’s crazy, I’ve seen guys use it on rusty tools with great results but not body panels, wow!
Thanks ☺️, it worked out great
I'm blown away. If you didn't show this I would not have believed it. Thank you much......
Cool
Brother ive heard of white vinegar removing rust...but seeing it in reality makes me believe...Good job there mate and God bless
I was pleased with how it worked. Same as you, only heard of it working. Thanks for checking it out
Wow! im impressed with the result. im about to get a gallon and get to work!. Thank you for the informative video. Love the Eastwood Contour as well.
I use vinegar with salt added. I’ve made baths for parts in large tubs. Even added a bottle of lemon juice which is suppose to add some extra rust eating. Restoring a car where ya think old rusty bolts are gone come back to like new. Great stuff. 🤙🤙
The flash rust waits for no man. 30 minutes tops before neutralizing. I also add baking soda to the water for neutralization.
Your right. Can't wait around, the flash rusting happens quick
ya 30 minute tops can be used on bottles of skunk beer
I'm glad that I found your channel. I have been using this for 30 years . Glad to see it is now getting recognition again.
Great to hear!
Wow! Bryan that was impressive how well that worked! Great job! I really want a cowl induction hood like that for my Nova! 👍
Thanks Jason, I am happy with the result. It's crazy someone left that hood untreated after paying over 750 back in day.
Vinegar does impressive work as a cleaner. That hood looks really great. Little more work and it will be mint. Be safe and stay well.
Yea its gonna work well, thanks Brian
Chemistry BW! Wow I didn't expect that!
Wiped right off. I was amazed.
Great results.. if you like, you can check out the a vid I posted a few years ago, using towel and also submerged vinegar rust removal, which includes a follow up vid on preventing rust "flash".. The plastic certainly helps the process.
I tried the white vinegar on a gas tank once, it got a lot of it, but also revealed pinholes. It did work!
Better to find the pin holes with vinegar than gas. 😆. It sure does Pap, thanks 😊
@@bwsgarage Yes def better to find out for $3 a gallon! There were two dead rats in that tank, talk about a rat rod!
😆
Naval Jelly with a plastic sheet cover may get the rest of it off. I'm told may have to do it 3 times. Great video !!!!!!!!
I need the proof!
He said "may". That means give it a try. @@manuelnajera1521
Hey Bryan, Great Low Cost Job - Well done!! As mentioned below by @billysbc118 and others here is that the Baking Soda solution is important to neutralise the microscopic vinegar residues in the grain of the steel. We normally use dilute phosphoric acid solution as it also converts the rust to Iron Phosphate and then follow up by 'passivating' with the Baking Soda solution and a plastic bristle brush with final rinse with lots of water. However I must say after seeing this that ordinary household vinegar cleans off rust way way better than I ever could have imagined!
Yes neutralize with baking soda,
Hood looks great BW. Good save on the hood. It is hard to believe that someone let it get that bad before you got it, those aren’t cheap hoods . Great video and stay warm. ✌️😎👍
I agree Kevin, zero protection. They just bolted it on to rot
Hey BW. I tried that on my Fargo and got a very stronge craving for some fish and chips 🐟🍟😊. That is looking good BW. I wouldnt drum sand that too much because you will get low stops and they will really show up when painted. What I did was put conditioner on the rust, then dody filed the bad spots and used high-build primer for the little pitting. Mine turned out good. But every job is different. Keep up the great videos Buddy.🍁👍👍
I agree not drum sanding to much Andy. I kept metal cool and machine moving. The bad spot is gonna need body filler for sure.
Can't believe how good the vinegar worked, I'm going to definitely try that on a few of my projects. Price is right too.
Absolutely! It works a d don't hurt the wallet.
Wow this is amazing brother! I cannot believe it worked as well as it did that's incredible! Thank you so much for making this video! You're a godsend God bless you sir
Thank you Bryan for making this video. Great content 🏆 Vineger is amazing stuff, works wonders on mould too!
Appreciate it, thanks for checking it out
@bwsgarage question did you added water to the vinegar or did you just used vinegar by it self
Man this helps so much. I gotta do the roof on my truck and I'm in a little over my skill level. But this will clear that nasty and then I can sand, fill and prime. Thanks BW.
Cool, glad it helped ya
Wow that worked really well brother, good job!
Thanks Cody, yea I have heard of it, but this was my first try with it
Great Job, I've been told that works but never tried it, awesome will keep it in mind, hopefully my mind will hold out. LOL Tony
I've heard it several times, but when Gary mentioned it in a comment I decided I need check it out
I’ve been eyeing one of those Eastwood sanders for a while. Iam for sure getting one soon now. That vinegar trick worked like a champ though!! I’ll be using that trick on some parts of my car.
Absolutely brother. I loved the contour grinder
Dude! That was awesome! I gotta try that on something soon, great video 👍✌️
You won't be disappointed Josh. I think next time I will just second soak the real bad spots.
I didn't know vinegar could do that! I'm impressed with the results! 😊👍
Good stuff Gorni. At first you pull back the wet towels and it think, looks the same, but wet. But then you wipe and it comes off like washing off dirt
@@bwsgarage Thank you
@@bwsgaragewhat is the mix ratio you did with the vinegar
awesome job on the hood it looks amazing
Thanks 👍 😊
Luv ur sense of humor good video
Thanks I really appreciate it 🙏
Vinegar is amazing stuff and it tastes good on salad. For really rusted stuff you can submerge it and let it soak for a week or two. It'll get all the rust with time.
Thanks Gary. I've heard people talking about this several times in the past. And when you mentioned it last video. I was like let's give it a try and see what happens. Thanks for checking out my videos and participation my friend.
THANKS BW !!!
Thank you 😊 I appreciate you checking it out. ✌️
Amazing. You gave me a head start in knowledge thanks 👍❤
It works great I did a hood myself the same way good luck Smitty
Cool 👍
Hey thanks for sharing Bryan, who knew about white vinegar being autobody related thank you for that, definitely good one to know, Aloha and Hang Loose
Thanks Sonny, I was surprised how good it works. At first I pulled back towels and though, it looks same, but then when I wiped. Like washing dirt off . Take care man ✌️
I have used this vinegar for years to clean stuff more people need to know this great video man
I appreciate you saying, hopefully the video will get some traction at some point. ✌️
Wow BW that’s awesome, you told me you were going to try it and DAM!!!! That’s impressive!!!!! Yep Totally Awesome how it works!!!Better then the old wise tale of Coca Cola for Rusty bolts 😂👍🏻👍🏻
When I pulled the towel back, it looked thr same only wet, but when I wiped at it I was like WOW, it really works!
nice job worked nice
Thank you for the info. I've been using very expensive acid. I'm going to try vinegar
Nice job brother, that's some good content! ✌
Thanks Rocky, I appreciate it. ✌️
Great video going to try vinegar next time I need to remove some rust from something
It works, when done neutralize part with soda ash and water.
Vinegar...is not just for douching. Keeps everyone happy in a marriage.
Lol 😂
🤣
Thanks for the demo BW did not know that would work but thinking about it is a acid ! Use the stronger stuff on shingle roof to kill Moss work ok ! Will keep it in mind when need Now hop the manufactures don't hear about this and make the price go way up !! LOL Need these cheap products that are safe to used As everything cost so much ! Windex is good for wiping down surfaces before paint to remove oils from surfaces Cheap prep before paint !
Excellent suggestion, windex to remove oils, thanks John
That vinegar really works great. You can that hood looking better than sand blasting it. Nice Job BW! I don't think it will need much filler at all and you could probably get it out with a few heavy coats of filler primer! Talk to you later buddy!
Hoping high build can take care of it. Some of thr pitting Is pretty bad though. Thanks Don, have a good 1
I am super happy for you on the hood BW, vinegar is so amazing, isn’t that how you can also get the patina effect, talk soon BW
I never heard of that Mike but now that you say, I assume you could. Just be sure to neutralize when done. That's for watching ✌️
Thank you. This is great!
Cool, glad you like and can use it ✌️
Great, learned a lot
Thanks.
Cool
👍, thanks for the info!
👍
Wow thats awesome
Super happy with it
Wow! Way cool!
I was pleasantly surprised for sure.
Baking soda really helps in. the water to neutral use it the benefits way out way the smell!
Thanks for the tip, I used 3 buckets of fresh water a d sponge cleaned it. Next time I do this process I will make sure to have some baking soda on hand
Vinegar that awesome bud, my grandparents would soak there feet in it , don't know what it did but the house smelled good, lol . nice one Man.
I've heard of soaking feet in vinegar. I think for soften them up and foot order cure. 🤔 all i know, it takes rust off too lol
Wow, BW, that worked great . Saved a lot of time on sanding it all. That hood is in decent shape 👌. Are you going to use the metal filler or just regular bondo? And that drum sander did an excellent job 👍Thanks for sharing and stay warm 👍👋💯
I am gonna stop at body supply shop this weekend and see what they recommend. I am thinking I will need a little filler. But may just put 4 or 5 coats of high build, block it and see where it'd at
Try using Phospho acid next time. It turns the rust into iron phosphate. What little specs you don't get removed, they will be converted and won't rust anymore. Plus helps against the flash rusting afterwards.
doing this with my old truck 64 chev c10 rust real bad on doors and floor small pin holes wonder if i could stop the rust with this. stuff cheap enough will be able to do so. thank you for vid. also looking for disc brake set up any you guys might have one laying around nice nova.
I’ve used it to free up stuck engines and it works way better than an internet voodoo concoction of diesel, lacquer thinner, trans fluid.
Ot works good for flushing a cooling system
Cooling system flush, I had not thought of that but yea, freeing engines, I've never tried but heard of. Thanks AndyGee
@@bwsgarage on a particularly crusty motor that I was changing all the hoses and water pump on anyway. Not sure what it would do to the seals in the pump, probably be fine but ?
Pretty amazing how the vinegar worked.
I am trying to find a way to remove surface rust off a vintage painted lamp from the 1950's.
I managed to get the lighter stuff (before pitting) off with lite rubbing compound, but there's a few areas where it is more built up and you can feel the raised pitted rust.
Not sure if I can use this method as I don't know what the white vinegar would do to the paint underneath. Perhaps if I applied it just on the pitted part with a Q-Tip and was very careful. Any suggestions are welcome.
Great job on the hood and nice video.
BTW: A good friend of mine used to own a body shop in Red Bank, NJ called Sanford's Auto Body (which was started by his dad). I saw your sign on the wall.
Phil
That hood is going to turn out nice.
There are some bad pitting areas but it should block put with some high build primer and maybe a smudge of filler
I ot at work yesterday buddy, couldn't answer phone.
@@bwsgarage was just going to ask about cbgg
I soaked a hand full of nuts and bolts in some vinegar for days while I was working on other things. They looked like new after I washed them off.
BW, love it. Got to try it.
Hey thanks, I appreciate it
At Home Depot there is a stronger vinegar I think it is 60% it"s for industrial use. I use it to kill weeds lol
Yea, but it cost 30 bucks or more. This was 3 or 4 bucks a gallon. And it did the job
Well if you've seen a Nova hood removal skip first 5min. At 7min. the vinegar made appearance & was cool & useful T.Y.
An idea popped in my head about the heavy pitted areas. What if you had a knife sharpening block and rubbed it on the area's where it's worse.? It sharpens knives, it should make those area's smooth as a babies butt! Know what I'm talking about?
I do know what your talking about. I have a stone at work in my box. It's so old the middle is half way out of it lol. I was thinking a long block with some 80 grit and working up. Same premise as the sharpening stone. Take care and thanks for feed back Paul
@@bwsgarage You'll knock it out I'm sure! The hard blocks working your way rough to fine fine, get it shiny then primer!! She's gonna show teeth!!! Mean machine!!
Good stuff man !
I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked
I'll have to try this on my 95 caravan roof
Cool
We always called it pickling Steele.
Works great!
@@bwsgarage yes, that hood turn out awesome. I used to know an old guy who liked to use all the original parts he could on restoring a car . He had a big plastic cooler he would drop in. He put Hinges, brackets, nuts and bolts small auto body parts, anything he could fit in there. Had some little brushes , tooth brush, brass brushes. And every day at start of the day , ya go to that cooler and take some tongs he had pull part out clean to its best, and I satisfied neutralize and prep & prime . If not finished and ya think it needed more, throw it back in. It was cool and works great for car parts brackets. Any metal for that matter .
well i have some panels from my TR3 that need de-rusting so will give white vinegar a try
Them old triumphs are cool
Well gave the vinegar a try and yes it does work well.
I have a rust spot bubbling under my paint in the car door jam. Should i scrape away the paint and then apply vinegar or citric acid? Does it damage surrounding paint? Then after neutralizing what do I coat with oil? Lanolin? Do I prime and paint? Thank you... i have no experience.
Fast etch has zinc you leave on it protects until you work on it again. Just re apply with a scotch bright and neutralize agin befor epoxy.
Just put some more vinager on it
.and let it soak for a couple of days..just retreat the bad areas
Try some Maratic acid for the deep pits
always save ya rags, wash out n hang em up, her indoors will appreciate it, y'all hear mi
That's nice to know one a budget, but you can water jet blast it with wet media then wash clean with Vinegar.
Cool
You can NOT stop rust once it starts, grinding does not work using rust converter does not work. All these techniques only slow it down. Vinegar and all other acids may remove surface rust but it will always come back. The only way to get rid of it is to cut it out and replace the metal with unoxidized material or replace the panels and seal them to prevent air from coming in contact with the metal.
We know dude
Not entirely true...all depends on the deept the rust has penetrated the metal and what method is used to get rid of it.
Should I spray my atv down with it wait 24 hrs and scrub it down ??
He pulled the vinegar too soon, leave for two days and it would have worked even better getting into all the pitted areas. Works just as good at loose parts soak in a container for two day’s minimum. Cheap and all natural.
Use a scotch bright next time and water to get off.
Use citric acid instead of vinegar. No stink and it is even stronger and faster than vinegar. It is very cheap if you order it from a supplier for the food industry.
To get the heavy pitting rust free you have to apply the vinegar or citric acid longer - it can take up to a week if it is really heavy. To speed up the process scrub it with a wire brush daily to remove loosened rust. Don't be afraid that the acid will eat up the good metal. Within a week it will not do much to it being such weak acids.
How to remove rust in not reachable areas like inside pillars, doors, rails? Any tips for scrubbing that off?
Areas like that, get loose rust off with wire brush and then get a rust Converter and brush it on. After it sets up coat with a good sealer primer
Brush on a small amount of Muriatic acid on the tough spots. Take it right off.
Bryan did you send that Hood before applying vinegar!
No, I only sanded to remove the one strip of rattle canpaint on center left side of hood. I did not sand before applying vinegar to the bare metal that was rusty. I let it sit about 18 hrs, the longer the better. Neutralize with baking soda and water when done wiping off rust. I was truly amazed how well it worked
Fuck dude that eastwood drum tool did a beautiful job on that hood. I'm gonna get the same sct tool and do the same on my rusted hood because mines as bad as yours. Good video bro
Yea, it's a really good tool, just got to keep it moving so heat don't build up.
So after you washed it do you hit it with epoxy primer or self etching primer???
Epoxy
BW, did your buddy sell that 55 gasser. I’m interested. Thx.
It sold the day after I uploaded the video. He didn't even get to post it in marketplace.
Thx
how you liking that Eastwood Drum sander soo far? I am thinking about getting one of those later on down the Road!!
It's nice, but don't waste your money on the wire wheel drum. It didn't touch thst heavy scale. I do like how the 80 grit wheel conditions the metal. Very nice I give it a thumbs up
@@bwsgarage Sounds good man!!
Now if you use por 15 metal prep I think it has zinc❤
Maybe next one, already painted in epoxy
I guess the last job will be sand blasting the pits?
Need your help I have 2004 toyota tacoma need chasi rust clean
What I'd do, Wire brush off loose rust, paint with rust converter, then paint on por 15 with uv protection.
Ok that is what want ibdomt want sand blast I am sure my truck is not bad shape I want to save before to late most rust is in rear front prety good
@BW's Garage I also want to spray inside frame you do that also
Oh I thought you was asking advice, I don't do side work. I work full time job and just play with my projects on weekends and extra time
Dont you epoxy and then body work? That way it doesnt bubble the paint.
One guys says one thing another says another. I read the manufacturer instruction and it's direct to metal
love the video. hate the "music"
I stopped using it on my videos
It eats concrete 😢
It's not aggressive, especially if you neutralize whn done using it. Flush with water and if your really worried use a little baking soda
now get in epoxy prime right away
Yep, check out our eastwood roll on epoxy video 😀
the only thing is that you cant blockout any marks in the first undercoat when rolling unless you sand that then prime
Good video, high music volume, ugly.....
Thanks, yes I have moved on from music in videos. No more of it
The music sucks.
i use white vin for all my old motorcycles petrol tanks its the best.
Cool
Use Muriatic Acid. 👍👍👍👍👊💥💥💥💥
I suppose, but vinegar is cheaper and less acidic for the average person. Either way, neutralize right away and prime to avoid flash rusting.
