$14.99 for that little bottle of PRE? That was 8 years ago. It must be like $25 by now in 2020. I do the same cleaning with acetone on a spray bottle then wipe it off with new cotton rags or the blue roll paper shop towels. To etch my metals & light rust removing, I buy Concrete & Metal Prep from Home Depot on the paint department. It comes in a slightly transparent plastic bottle & you can see that the liquid inside in green. Right now it sells online for $17.97. Hope this helps some people.

Des, Rick is doing a restomod on a 1974 chev nova. He is redoing a 4 dr nova into a 2 dr nova and is replacing a lot of rusted metal and working his way through each pc and panel, doing an excellent job of rebuilding the car. Rick is a very accomplished metal worker and is doing a lot of the same things that you will need to do to restore your 57 Fairlane, so you might want to go back and watch his old videos and see how he goes about fixing the problems that his car has, would be worth it.

Cool stuff Rick. I used metal etch and prep from Ace Hardware stores. It doesn't really smell but if you get a whiff after it starts working, I notice the acid smell. I had some naval jelly, which does almost the same thing as the liquid. Our friend Pete did a video a while back where he showed how to pre bare metal using vinegar and water to stop the rust. It turned the rusty pits black too, so I suspect the same thing is happening where the acid in the vinegar is eating at the rust.

Last time I used acid etch was on aircrafts. The acid etch we used was by Dupont, and doesn't look any different than what you've got there. We applied it with gray scotch brite pads, scrubbing the aluminium. The FFA has all kinds of rules on refinishing aircrafts, acid etch after stripping was a requirement, followed by self etching primer, they didn't allow epoxy. I think that says something about etch primer vs epoxy primer on bare metal..... Good vid!! Later man.....

TheRickfix It has been some time now and assume it's been painted and finished. How is it holding up? Also, I was curious was you used to "Neutralize" it with and was sanding or scuffing with a brown nylon scuff pad used. I am doing the same thing and wish to learn how it stands the test of time, as my elbows and back gets worse. I plan on leaving the vehicle to family and don't want to be cussed at years latter. Retired ASE Master...Thanks, You have my like!
