  • I screwed up...expensive paint fail!! This time at the Quick Speed Shop I messed up...I think. 1980 Dodge W200 build, sand blasted the frame, used Eastwood Fast Etch, East Rust Encapsulator. Paint was dry for over two weeks, put chassis outside in the rain. Fast Etch reacted with rain water somehow and bubbled through the paint, ruining it. Did I screw up? I don't know. Reached out to Eastwood, waiting to hear back. Cost to get frame blasted again and this time epoxy primered the blaster...$1200! Ouch.

I’m sure that will haunt you for a while. Write the check and then focus on the things you enjoy. The cab roof, a ride in one of your favorite cars to get a burger with your pals, and a trip to the junk yard to kick flat tires.
I think anyone that has a project has had a crazy fail. My very first project in 1971 was a Corvan. Spent big bucks to rebuild the engine. Then driving it in its first 100 miles it blew apart because of inexperience. Restarted the project and moved on.
Keep us posted on how it goes with Eastwood.
I admire your rant in that you were professional and discussed the problem rather than going crazy and screaming all over the video.
As always thanks for the entertainment. It means a lot to folks that can’t get out and work on stuff any more and to those that use these videos to learn how to do their projects.

Trust me I was pretty upset about it off camera, but trying to keep it PG-13 for the CZcamss. Is what it is, just cost me tons of extra money and some time and logistics. Turned out better in the long run because I was able to get the frame primed with epoxy this time so it will be super durable.

I know it hurts but I want to thank you for sharing things that go wrong. I feel like I'm some kind of an idiot when I make mistakes. It's good to know it's part of the process even for guys who know their stuff like you. Once you get it back from the sandblaster and start moving forward again I bet things will start to look up.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Hopefully, by posting this it will save others from the same fate. Hang in there. I had a similar type of experience with some epoxy primer. I completely took my Model A body apart sanded it down, cleaned it and applied epoxy primer. For some reason the outside of the body panels seemed to have turned out pretty good, but I did the inside of the panels a different day, and later on, noticed the inside was bubbling and rusting under the epoxy. By this time I had my media blaster working and stripped it down again and used several stages of Rustoleum. I called the manufacturer, but he just tried to blame me. I understand the frustration. Best wishes for an improved New Year.

Epoxy is the way to go but you better paint it within 36 - 40 hrs or you will need to scuff it according to the epoxy primer instructions. Also rattle can may disappoint you bro. just have them put a coat of eurethene black on afterwards its great for fluid film and u v light. I just finished my 86 dodge frame last fall its on my youtube page check out the quality if you want. Just a suggestion good luck love your content.

I had the blaster prime it for me as I'm not set up to spray right now. It was all the money, but will be worth it. I just sprayed the frame with Rustoleum Professional flat black. It's not as good as urethane, but the Fluid Film sinks right into it and creeps everywhere vs a harder urethane. Your frame came out nice!

degree in autobody/collision here metal etching acid is used to neutralize the oxidation (rust) because sand blasting DOES NOT get out deep pitting rust sand blasting is never 100%. after etching let it sit for an amount of time specified on the product label very important next step is to hose down everything with water to get excess etching off we did extensive classroom experiments on million panels over course of months this very issue we did very little hardly ever sandblasting because you end up with media everywhere when its time to topcoat its still better to wire wheel then etch then rinse then immediately blow dry with air. when your etching bare metal if you see any microscopic black spots that's rust the sand blasting missed

Thanks for the info. I've blasted cars 25 years ago, then used Dupont phosphate coating that was mixed with water to protect fresh blasted metal from flash rust. Never had any paint issues, just Scotch Brite and prime. No issues 25 years later. This Fast Etch must have acid in it, but all the directions say to do is wipe off access with Eastwood Pre or acetone. No mention of water or paint reactions. I know Matt from Irontrap uses Fast Etch all the time exactly as I did. He used to work for Eastwood. He just put out a vid today with a T frame clearly coated with Fast Etch. I know he paints his frames with Rust Encapsulator and never showed any issues. I need to call Eastwood and see what the deal is.

Hello Josh, I am not so sure that you screw up, here is my thoughts, I used for years now phosphoric acid. If you look at the eastwood fast ech it is mainly composed of this acid and zinc phosphate. It is recommended to clean the acid off after some hours to stop the chemical reaction. Indeed the acid is freeing the oxygen that are contained in the surface oxydes of your frame (or inside the rust if any). If you dont stop the reaction, the reaction keeps going and give you bubbles until there is no more oxydes. The zinc is there to enable a good phosphatation of your metal even if it should occurs at higher temperature ideally. Personnaly I did more or less the same than you on parts that I didnt care about the surface aspect, and I never add problems with theses bubbles, I am not saying it is ideal situation but it no so big problem. Here the main problem is that bubbles were underneath the paint. It wise to me when using phosphoric acid to wait before painting with anything on it. I am also used to brush it roughly before painting. You can also reduce the chemical activity by applying water that will balance the pH AND dry it right after before coating with paint . Regarding eastwood and others I dont buy these type of products because price is 10x the raw industrial phosphoric acid price.

Josh dang, sorry to see the problem with your frame painting. Thanks for sharing your experience hopefully Eastwood will reach out and help you understand where and what exactly went wrong. You put so much time and money to do it right and for it to turn out so you have to do it again sure leaves a bad taste in using their products again. Yeah, I was bumming pretty hard, more at the $1200 it was going to cost to fix if than anything else. The headlight was a cheap from TSC. The battery doesn't last very long which sucks. It was a 2 pack for $14 so I guess that speaks to the quality. Not sure the brand as I threw the box away.
