I have used a red light panel every day for the last 3 years. I have two panels ...one mito & one helios, I prefer the helios (prob because I am a creature of habit and I got that one first). I have no idea how much good - if any it is doing. It makes me feel positive and healthy but that could be psychological.....my skin is excellent for my age, but my diet and exercise is good. I have read many, many studies and have discovered nothing definitive....but I will continue. When I use it I tell myself that it is improving my skin, energising my cells and making me incredibly healthy....that positivity in itself is probably enough to make a difference! I use mine for around 20 mins each evening (front & back). I tried doing only 3 times a week for 3 months but missed it since it is part of my routine and kind of helps me unwind. By the way I use a separate laser on alternate nights for my hair (undoubtedly very effective) and also if I feel my red light panel has been shining on my face directly for more than 5 mins...then I switch off the near infra red part - incase it affects facial fat ...I don't know if it does, and my facial fat has remained in tact! Not sure if that ramble is helpful to anyone!

Worth noting that with the basic physics of light, the irradiation intensity falls inversely by the square of the distance. So, 2cm away from skin, will be 1/4 the intensity of 1cm away from skin for a 1cm square area.

Sorta kinda. That equation applies for light emanating in a sphere. For light focused by lenses, which is how most panels operate, it falls off more slowly. As an intuition, imagine a beam with 0 degrees of dispersion (e.g., a laser). Its power does not decrease with distance. Red light panels will be somewhere in between.

What is the hormetic mechanism? I can understand shorter wavelengths stressing cells. Also, should point out that if this is being used for exercise recovery you may want to leave it for 4-5 hours after the exercise so that the anti-inflammatory effect does not interfere with the exercise response. It's like how people say ice an injury at the time, use heat later. Let exercise produce oxidants and inflammatory compounds, then suppress those things later on after they've run their course acutely.

@johnwick7838 There was a recent study that found that, after weight training, exosomes are released from muscle that travel to fat tissue and cause it to start breaking down for energy, maybe explaining why weight training is more protective against obesity than one would expect when considering only the calories expended, though they didn't explain where the extra energy may go to. Takeaway seems to be a lot of communication going on that may be important, and why some studies find antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, even Metformin etc can blunt exercise response/improvements by up to 50%. Meanwhile, there's pre-workouts with high dose quercetin, crazy. People killing their own gains

Power absorbed per unit area will decrease inversely to the square of the distance *provided the source is far enough from the absorbing target that the source looks like a point source.*
In practice this means that the distance from source to target is at least 10X the diameter of the source. If the source is 1cm in diameter it must be at least 10cm from the target. Closer than that and it is less than 1/r^2.

    • @markvoelker6620

Prof. Hamblin, in an interview, said to direct red light to the thymus gland for immune enhancement. Yet he also says he “doesn’t know” its effects on cancer development??? That seems a bit wishy washy to me. Either it improves immunity against cancer or it doesn’t. Given that breasts usually stand in close proximity to the thymus, I would go as far as to call it irresponsible.

Thank you so very much for replying to my comment. And I want to tell you - I did receive that item about 10 ours ago and tried it out. I had ZEREO expectations because I only used it once and it was the cheap model. BUT - I used it for about 30 minutes and the effects were EXTRAORDINARY ! ! ! I'm 67 years old and due to an illness, I must use a manual wheelchair on a full time basis. Because ALL the stress goes to my arms because they do ALL the work of the work load my legs used to handle, I have REALLY SEVER CRONIC pain in my shoulders. I could feel the change as I used the light on my upper body, and by a few hours the pain was COMPLETELY GONE ! ! ! It's late night now and I still have NO PAIN. I had no expectations under the best of circumstances that the effects could be this immediate. I also have issues with my left hand and even that has changed a little even though I didn't put it in front of the light panel. I'm really excited to see what more I can do with it over the rest of my body in the coming weeks! But aside from that - I do want to thank you for your encouragement - AND let you know you were RIGHT! Having said that - is the more expensive one better? I'm going to guess that it is. Bottom line - I just don't have the money right now. But I think I am going to invest in the higher quality brand when I can swing it. If the cheap on has this much effect, I can only imagine what the more expensive one will do. The most important lesson here is the phrase ALL is better than nothing. I couldn't afford the ALL right now, so Something is better that Nothing - as it turns out in this case. Thank you again for your response ! ! ! It was very kind and thoughtful of you to be supportive for me!@@rayneuy3273

Artificial light is not intense enough to have an effect on suppressing melatonin and enhancing cortisol that is required to reset the circadian clock each day. You need 10 minutes of bright morning Sun to 15 to 20 minutes of overcast sky to do this. Drinking coffee before doing so negates the action. There was no mention of pulsing the red light which some studies claim is more effective than a steady exposure.

That was great, very interesting talk. Check us out for red light glasses that slow the ageing of the eyes for those 40 and over. Co-developed by scientists in the UK (UCL Institute of Ophthalmology) and affordable. (Actually Modern Healthspan did an interview with one of the scientists involved recently).
