  • Furiosa barely out sold a Garfield movie! and this despite the fact that 90% of the audience absolutely loved it! Why is this? it's because audiences are very sick and tired of the message and so even a hint of woke will scare of the overwhelming majority of movie goers!

To be fair, the Netflix production model is financially successful. The producers of content get paid in advance, so they don’t have to cater or have to produce good content that has to be sold to people. It’s basically slop.
There is no revenue, so there’s no revenue split or shares. You get paid up front. It’s a “contract” job.
And, the main cause is due to Streaming platforms requiring a catering model. Popular content is great for new users, but it’s expensive. What you need is mediocre content. Content that’s cheap and fills time. Content that doesn’t make a lot of noise or cost a lot to stream against the millions of customers who would unsubscribe if you made it convenient.
Atlas, is Financially Successful. It won’t be remembered, but it didn’t go broke. Because it was created with no imperative to be sold or marketed. Netflix, once they handed over the money, didn’t get any ability to make changes or a refund.

The men weren't treated like shit for being men, and Furiosa wasn't a cliched two-dimensional girlboss character "who don't need no man." On top of that, it actually had good action, drama, worldbuilding, and performances, especially from Hemsworth who probably gave one of his best performances I've seen (and he's actually a bro who respects and appreciates his audience). I just don't understand the hype X-Men 97 is getting. It wasn't good unless the bar has been lowered to "Not overtly political". The writers constantly wrote themselves into corners they then had to Deus Ex Machina their way out of, showing they clearly had no plan for how they were getting from point A to B. Plotlines that should have been front and center(Like Scott and Jean reckoning with what was done to their marriage) and been seriously addressed were just randomly dropped and then rushed through at the end.
Rogue's behavior for most of the season was horrid, but COULD have been justified if the final episodes showed her having learned the damn lesson except she completely goes off the deep end and outright betrays everything she (and Gambit) ever fought for in the end. The whole premise for why Xavier gave his dream to Magneto was just handwaved away with the most pathetic "Uh...yeah. Guess I goofed that one up good, huh"?
It's only "good" in the sense that it's not rancidly bad like most of what's on Disney Plus. It's just old fashioned bad with mediocre making-it-up-as-we-go writing, coasting on member berries all the way.

From what I gather, Furiosa is not particularly bad but it was marketed terribly as another girlboss film when it apparently isn't. The other problem is this film is like Zombieland 2: it came long after the buzz of its predecessor died. Ten years to be exact.
Yet another point is that it doesn't have Mad Max, despite including his name in the full title. It should've just been titled Furiosa, full stop. Either they plan on more side stories within post-apocalypse Australia, or they didn't think it would sell without tying Max's franchise into it, or they think the audience is so dumb that they can't figure out that it's part of the franchise unless explicitly told.
I haven't seen it and I don't plan to at this time. I enjoyed Fury Road well enough, mostly for the outrageous machinery, but I've stepped back from most new theater releases, lest I fund and perpetuate bad ideas and practices in the industry. Furiosa is a film far too late and worse, it's a prequel that likely doesn't need to exist because it doesn't further the overall franchise narrative that a proper sequel would.

Not only do woke centric stories fail but also prequel stories in general are not hitting the mark.
Narrative moves forward, like we all do in our lives. The general feeling after we have been entertained by a good story is "what's next?". Now this was picked up by Hollywood in the 1970's and over the decade's we saw innumerable iterations and churn on sequels, so much so that I believe that the audience grew to expect them. Marvel, from 2008 to 2019, knew how to handle this by building upon each previous story, with a long narrative arc as the main driver of the story.
Yet there was a push to go back in a story's timeline, to tell what happened, before X happens. The Thing 2010 was one of the first examples of this and also of the trope of the girlboss being the main character appearing. The film failed and it's still not regarded well by fans. The film failed because we know what is going to happen next.
    Same goes for this film.

GG is a great (and thuroughly beaten) example as a character well known and liked gets a change that appeals to an extreme minority that either already hyperfixated on them because of how they came off or started to because their entire personality revolves around what they turned the character into. most people dont care and simply dont like the conversation leaving a small few that cared about character consistency to argue with people who never came into this with logic and refused the idea that what they were given made no sense

Anime doesnt have this bullshit, and there is soooo much of it, even if one has to sift through garbage

I went and saw it with my dad today, and we loved it, dad being a boomer Mopar Muscle kid and I love action flicks with lots of personality. Our big takeaway was that it does run long at 2-1/2 hours, but Miller and Co. do NOT waste any of it; the plot gets going, and it’s off to the races. Pun…somewhat unintended?
The biggest fault with the film is that it's at least five years late; if it came out between 2017 and 2019, theaters would be filled. I know filmmaking is a complicated process, but you risk projects like this underperforming like Furiosa has. The second biggest is that it's a prequel. General rule of thumb for you writers out there: NO. PREQUELS. Pick a spot to start and go from there; allude to past events if and only _when you must._ Trying to fit a story into a preset path always goes badly when you try to force an outcome.

It is hard to say as most things that have a good start... tend to quickly tank and turn toxic as the toxic owner claims the poisonous fumes are what made it good.
And thus more posion is poured on it.

Made by Hollywood + prequel/remake/reboot + character nobody cares about + stunning strong diverse female for modern audiences
The film already had *ALOT* of stigma working against it being popular. I suspect we might see it have legs as word of mouth gets around, but alot of people are probably done to the point of boycotting movies entirely and won't watch it (legally) no matter how many reliable sources tell them it's not super woke.

I like the idea of non-mad max character story in universe.
But to make it work they'd have to release it when franchise was "riding high", not almost 10 years after last movie. Especially as people already wanted to see more of Tom Hardy's Mad Max after Fury Road.

I too am completely disengaged from modern Hollywood. I did watch the Dune duo. But I won’t be watching a third film. I want to avoid the inevitable, boy bad, girlboss to the rescue that’s been set up at the end of the second film.
Plus there are only two Mad Max films, no matter what the internet movie database said.

Counterpoint to the "Separation of art from artist" point: that separation is a two-way street, and it isn't an effort taken by the audience but also the creator. Great authors allow their beliefs to be challenged and have their flaws to be acknowledged, since it deepens the conflict. The problem these days is that modern creators are narcs who make everything about themselves.

I got tired of poor quality content that I was then called nasty names for if I refused to pay for it. I stick to old media I have in my DVD collection. I did see Furiosa (didn't pay) and it was ok. I'm not sure why it's getting such rave reviews. It was an inferior rehash of what we saw in Fury Road. Anya doesn't appear till the second half of the film and just stares and scowls her way through. Not very compelling.

Here's the thing about the rare cases where woke people manage to create decent media - either through accident, professionalism or sheer talent, they have managed to avoid sticking overt woke preaching into it to ruin it decisively. Will they be able to keep it up? All their woke friends, co-workers, bosses will insist, demand even, that the preaching and virtue signalling is taken up a notch in their next work. Will they resist and keep resisting forever? It's not exactly a safe bet, in fact experience shows they will break sooner or later, usually sooner.

Hollywood beancounters should seriously do an experiment. Draw up say 10 movie posters for fictional action movies (with lots of explosions, weapons, vehicles with speed blurring, that kind of thing), with the caveat that half of them have male lead characters front and center, and the other half has female leads in the front. Now show those to 100 men (males after all being the main consumers of action movies) and have them tell you which of the movies they would watch. I think the result would be rather devastating to the bottom line with woke Hollywoods current business practices.

I am hoping the Mad Max franchise goes the same way as the Evil Dead franchise. Evil Dead has a female main character movie that was okay. Then, there was a three season Evil Dead series with an older Bruce Campbell that rocked.
I am hoping we may see a Mad Max series after this.
At this point, it is clear there is enough world building in the Mad Max franchise to have a series in that franchise.
