Orcs In DnD Are Just Mexican People Now... The Last Bit Of Magic And Fantasy Ground Into Paste
Vložit
- čas přidán 20. 06. 2024
- The suffocating curse of woke modernity chokes the magic and life out of one more fantasy franchise as new DnD not only removes all the uniqueness of it's races and species but even destroys the very fundament of their nature, appearance and style. The Orc is supposed to be an anti-civilizational force! And yet in new Dungeons and Dragons they themselves are just normal people now! Wearing normal clothing and hunting using normal birds. This is the bland and uninteresting future that fantasy has been reduced to.

Author has imagination and creativity, but it is poisoned by their "modern" ideology that locks them in one small fence of trying to bring real life into imagination to always represent something.
Or DMs should... you know... make their own settings?
If WOTC running their setting the way they want is a problem for you... create your own... and if you can't... well that's your problem. Being a DM (and even being a player in some regards) requires creativity, imagination, and a fair bit of work via math/balancing/etc....
All of that culminates into building a setting... I haven't touched any official settings from ANY source material in about 10 years....
If WoTCs Orcs offend you... don't play their setting.
It's that simple.
@@baphomeat Then why would I play their game? I don't want their setting, and I certainly don't want the mechanical baggage of D20 when I have other options. 5E is a decent system for a very narrow set of games, and those games are typically simply not worth making a setting, and the mechanics significantly constrain what sort of setting you could build, anyway. WoTC maintains their massive market purely as a consequence of 5e being incredibly easy for new PLAYERS (but not DMs) to pick up and play in 5 minutes, and people's general reluctance to try anything with more front loaded complexity. The more unappealing they make the game, the more attention they draw to the other options.

It doesn't look like fantasy anymore. There was a new picture for the minotaurs at some point, maybe it' still up. The minotaur looked like an ugly cow person and not at all like the beast that formed the myth.

The Suebian barbarians saw it as their religious and moral duty to crush anyone too weak to resist them, and they held yearly campaigns to attack everyone around them. That is what Orcs represent.
This was the thing that irked me the most about Baldur's gate 3. Drows, Duergar, Deep Gnomes, thieflings, EVERYWHERE, they are supposed to be rare races, meeting one is supposed to have a STORY behind it, nah, they are everywhere. Meanwhile, The humans are more rare than Drow in a surface human city and actually regular elves pretty much nonexistent.

Man, I kind of laugh at that because they're going about it absolutely the wrong way. Villains are active, they act and heroes react. That's why I stopped playing D&D with my friends and I don't buy games with their rules anymore either. It's not just Orcs, the D&D universe is 'progressive' in every detail. It stopped being fun and many things lost their meaning.
Why are you using their worlds? They can’t force you to make mexican stereotype orcs. Or anything else they demand
It's a safe setting now.
Have you tried any TTRPGs outside of D20 systems like D&D and Pathfinder? There are some really great ones out there, depending on the sort of game you want to play. D&D has this issue where the system is not well designed for anything except the simple professional adventurer game, and so editions either streamline it towards that and squeeze the life out of it in the process or attempt to add complexity on the backend and end up with a game like 3.5 or Pathfinder where you can model anything poorly.
If you're looking to avoid the "progressive" stuff, Ars Magica has a very interesting cosmology based around straight Catholicism, neo-platonic supernal magic, and Aristotelian physics (lightning is hot rocks) along with a setting based on real world medieval history, with a secret society of autistic ancap wizards trying (and failing) to avoid the outside world to get time in their labs. I struggle to imagine a game less "progressive" than this, where the forces of heaven and hell are played straight, and mentioning Newton is a fireball worthy offense. The infernal book even has advice for the DM on how to temp your players' characters to Sin subtly and insidiously in a way which is tempting to the player, not just the character; by time they realize they crossed the line, it will have happened long ago.
"What isn't allowed here?"

Someone at some point decided that Orcs are actually Black people (because everything has to be political). And so, consequently, we can't have Orcs be portrayed as barbarian savages, because that'd be like saying all Black people are barbarian savages.

The real funny thing is that a picture like this would have probably worked much better for a Half-Orc clan/extended family. Depicting them as having “adopted” parts of human culture native to the region they reside in while also maintaining a more “nomadic” lifestyle like a Orc tribe.
But no… DnD killed all the Half- races…
Well, we can't have mixed races. Got to keep that genetic purity.
Don't you know? Mixing blood is problematic. This are people that wouldn't date outside there race. Biracial Erasure.
That is a much better concept than anything the slackjawed numpties, of which I'm sure makes up 90 percent of their writing and creative staff, at WOTC could come up with.
In current times they could NOT keep half-races. Because of the question:
What half was the orc and what half was the human? Male orc 💪on human female or the unlikely other way round?
The undertones and implications are dark, but appropriate for ancient/medieval fantasy but not for soft-modern audiences.
Y'know what fuck it that's my lore for half orcs in my setting now
The orc is every overwhelming enemy that floods the gates
The elf is every superior talent of a well trained army
The dwarf is every stubborn foe, hardy and unshakable
None of them are any particular army, they are archetypes dialed up to 11. They are more barbaric than any human army can ever be, more talented than any human army can ever be, and more resilient than any human army can ever be. Those benefits come with costs. Barbarism sacrifices ingenuity, innate talent negates the need to grow and simply holding firm cedes ground.
They exist to explore those concepts as they are 3 important historical tactics in warfare. Out-man, out-skill, or out-last. Humans get the choice because they're human. Their archetype dialed up to 11 is "Adapt"
Orcs used to be a mix between Robert E. Howards "Marchers of Valhalla" and the dark creatures of William Hope Hodgson's "The House on the Borderland".
The savagery of Howard's barbarians added to the inhuman nature of Hodgson's creatures.

I once made a ogre wizard character for a one-off session. The rationalization was that he killed a party of adventurers, and tried on the wizard's headband of intelligence like a ring and suddenly was smart enough to read and cast spells. Not very well of course, but that was the fun. This character was an exception to the rule, an anomaly. Breaking with stereotypes is only special when those stereotypes are the norm. Another time I rolled a goblin fighter, a fanatic zealot who had dreams of one day becoming a paladin. It was a doomed venture because he was chaotic good (bordering on chaotic neutral) because of his misinterpretation of the tenants of the religion he converted to. Again, this character was treated as aberration in the setting.

The Dark elves of Forgotten Realms are mostly evil so Drizzt being a good guy was an exception to the rule. I'm guessing that like most popular things, Drizzt inspired an influx of copycats and a lot of good guys from traditionally evil races. I guess the side effect is that these races are no longer evil at all.
The drizzit Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.
The same shit happened to the Warcraft Orcs. In WC 1 + 2 they were the otherwordly evil force of destruction, using demonic powers and evil witchery. In WC 3 it started to make them look good and more or less civilized. In World of Warcraft they got more and more good and civilized to the point of no return. Today, in modern WoW, the Horde is pretty much the same as the Alliance, but with the colour red instead of blue.
I dunno, they still have pretty extensive war crime questlines in WoW.
I dunno, there's a lot of really shitty "all races are part of this faction" BS in WoW, but they still have distinct and interesting cultures. Maybe moreso than many other races after getting to see all the old clans in Warlords of Draenor.
There is certainly a flavor issue between the Alliance & Horde in recent expansions though. Neither had any real presence in the last two expansions.
To be fair, the changes were because they were devastated and rebuilt from scratch due to the war and Thrall. However, as the conflicts after show, Thrall was one of only a few good orcs. He vastly overestimated his species. Even questing as Horde showed they chaffed under Thrall’s peaceful ways.
Come on... The Horde are the guys who do a war crime every other expansion and starts a war jut as much, but we need to act like they are red Aliance. Those expansions end with the Aliance having pushed back, with the Horde defeated, but the Aliance needs to extend a hand and let them rebuild till they start another war. Granted the latest expansions are going into the other good guy group being secretly bad guys. because shades of grey.
wc 1 and 2 have the best orc art and lore.
"Okay, "William", how do you respond?"
"I clock out and head for the parking lot."
"Roll a D20 for encounter. Your cellphone rings, it's your insecure girlfriend and she's picking a fight about a post you made a couple years ago before you met her."
"Man! Really?!"
"Well, it's because "William's" girlfriend is caucasian. Had you rolled a hispanic all this would have happened when "William" got home."
"Fine. I answer the phone, "HI babe, what's up?"
"Who are you calling BABE?!"
I used to be a simple wheat farmer but then the King opened up the gates to the Orcs who do it for half the silver I need just to cover my tithe.
THEY TUK MUH JRB!
That unironicaly looks like Commist era art I swear to God WTF
It literally is commie art straight out of the 50s.
How is it like Communist art?
Imagine these guys pulling up to Helms Deep
They're holding their axes sideways and talk too much 😂😂😂
In a chariot with La Virgen airbrushed onto the hood...
"The orcs slaughtered my people. And their demonic magics corrupted the land."
-Akama, elder sage of the broken draenei.
Having lived in Mexico for many years, I can say that I have never seen a green Mexican with upward jutting tusks.
Orcs have always been Chaotic Evil.
Now that you metion it, I remember in a manga ( Isekai Munchkin - HP 1 no Mama de Saikyou Saisoku Danjon Kouryaku - / Otherworldly Munchkin: Let's Speedrun the Dungeon with Only 1 HP! ) it's set in a universe kinda like Dnd, our protagonist tells his party member(a native of the world) to use holy smite on anyone that seems suspicious to them. In this world and probably DnD you can only damage someone with holy smite if they have an evil alignment but if they aren't and just look evil but actually aren't they the paladin can get into alot of trouble, so the paladins/ good God police are always paranoid and hesitate to use holy smite without being 100% sure it will work. A prime example was given with an ork with a cat and a punk looking dude helping people out.
So for story reasons it was a funny thing to read, I mean what would you think if you just were out in the wild and the orc farmer Muk just tilling the field? Evil?
@@theclonelieutenant5976 I'd think slave Orc don't work the land.
@@theclonelieutenant5976 I don't like BS of nothing is inherently evil BS or you can't judge a book by it's cover. If I see an orc I know it is evil, that is their natural state and trait. I'm tired of moral ambiguity BS of current dayisms.
@@theclonelieutenant5976 need some good reading material for a 6 hour plane flight, gonna read this manga, cheers dude!
@@theclonelieutenant5976 Bro, that MC is a pure evil.
The hawk is particularly egregious since that's on the flag of Mexico. Along with the ponchos, the mesas, and the American cacti...
Well, yes. The Mexican flag is a reference to the story of how the Aztecs founded Tenochtitlan.
I'm all for Orcs having a culture and a civilization, but what I'm heavily opposed to is Orcs having a culture and a civilization that looks in any way human. This is utterly revolting to look at, and it's exactly why I started making my own fantasy setting (and TTRPG system to accompany it) 6 years ago.
You know what the aestetic reminds me of? Twilight Princess. Remember that old Zelda game that was like 85% fantasy and 15% western kinda look? Except even in that game they had human-like people already for the civilization and they actually remembered to keep the magic around. I love that damn game, I love it's look. I despise this because it takes everything that kind of thing was and forgets what made it special.
In my homebrew setting, Orcs were just EXTREMELY Fertile, and sending them out to wage war was necessary to keep their own population under control. It's why much of their lands eventually end up barren. Orc Life was abundant...which naturally made it cheap. To nobody moreso than the Orcs themselves.
So, like the Krogans in Mass Effect?
@@lonelystrategos Yes but I would say the Krogans are more like Orcs, because I admit that is NOT an original take on Orcs....and that take on Orcs predates Mass Effect by a lot.
Time to eat some Orcadillas and drink Cervesorc.
The big villain of my next campaign: Pablo Esc-orc-bar.
Don't need to worry about chaffing if you ride a nice fluffy wolf like orcs are supposed to.
Hola fellow OrcX! 🤓
As far as the Harris hawks go, they're native to Mexico and parts of South America.
So yeah, having the orcs be training Harris hawks is leaning pretty heavily into them being Mexican.
Come on Arch, they're still Orcs! The Pinatas they make, resemble small human children!
Good thing the first rule of RPG's still applies: "use what you like, change what you need and DISCARD THE REST." This shit is why PDF's exist.
If people don’t see the Mexicans stuff. The orc kid seams to be wearing a short ponchos. The type of hat they are wearing are similar to Gauchos hats which is found in South America. One of the orcs is picking fruit from the Cactus and South America are know to eat cactus and it fruits. I also heard someone menation about the style of saddle is also from South America.
What’s the difference between cowboys and Mexicans?
I’m sorry they all look the same
That's awesome! All were missing is the burritos 🌯 and tacos 🌮
@@54032Zepoltacos back on the menu boys!😂
I still wonder why there are FIVE orcs with falconer gear there....
Ya could make it a hunting group I guess but still seems pretty incompetent honestly.
If anything, Orcs should be closer to germanic tribes and/or the Mongols culturally than the mexicans
To be fair, real life barbarian horsemans used recurved bows and advanced weapons. Organization is needed to be a threat.
