    I just tried this, this afternoon, it was so easy! I don't know about the results as of yet. Very thankful for this post. We spend all of our 'play money' on the pool and toys we didn't know what to do after the orange/brown color started affecting the water. It looked so great the first day.

    We fought iron in our water for an entire summer . This year we still had iron and we decided to try this method . The only difference is that we didn’t run it though our pool pump . We used a submersible pump and just connected the hose from the submersible pump right into the bucket . It just eliminated all the fittings and connections and we already owned the submersible pump . It was amazing ! It worked like a champ ! Thanks for the idea ! We were so thankful to have the iron gone !

    This is the most AMAZING video! We have city water, and it is murky and red after about a foot of water, so I threw our old pool out, three years ago. We are getting another pool today, and I had resigned myself to letting the kids swim in that nasty stuff, but now I am so excited that maybe I won't have to! I know there is another video of the same thing on CZcams, but I like that you explain what you are doing, instead of playing the music. Thanks so much!

    THANK YOU FOR SAVING OUR POOL! The morning after our 5000 gallon pool installation was complete and I had added chlorine to the well water we had used to fill it, I woke up and was horrified to find our beautiful new pool was completely brown with stuff all over the bottom. After researching and watching this video, I put the poly fill stuffing I had in our skimmer basket and kept pump on. Every hour I took out the poly fill and washed all the brown out of it and reused it. Added some clarifier and stain away because I had skipped that step. Vacuumed the bottom of the pool twice, and I just woke up the very next morning and the pool is completely crystal clear! WOW! The liner wasn't stained after all, It was just so dirty that it looked that way. THANK YOU for making the video!

After all the hard work of digging out a perfect leveled spot and started filling it everything was going great, got about 1/2 filled and added about a 1/4 amount of liquid chlorine and it all turned red, was so mad I almost had tears of anger.!! This totally works... Amazing!
    I didn't bother with a lid or the extras. I just drilled several holes on only half of the side of bucket ( starting from about 4 inches above the bottom allowing any residue to collect @ the bottom & not come out while water pours from bucket). Then I just used bungee cords to secure the bucket sitting straight up on top step with no lid. Tied the pump hose to ladder so it would bend right into the top portion of bucket & viola! I changed the pillow stuffing 3 times in 3 days for good measure. It only took 1 day to transform the water, but wanted to be thorough.
    Once you have your water crystal clear you'll want to clean out your pump & put new filter in! I used a small piece of this pillow fill to wrap around my new filter too. By 2nd week I see no more hints of orange, yay!!
    Thanks Again!

      Hello Peggy. Glad to hear it finally worked out for you. Depending on specific circumstances and such, it can take longer, but if you stick to the plan, it will clear it out as you found out. Now, just keep an eye on things, and I would suggest periodically brush down the inside sides and bottom of the pool while the filter is running. This will allow additional residue that builds up to be filtered out, and will help keep the water crystal clear. I will be setting mine up soon.

      @@nckwrn I don't know how big your pool is but when iut comes to algae, you can go to dollar store and buy 1 gal jugs of bleach to pour in. You can figure 1 jug of bleach is similar to a little more than a bag of shock. It will start killing the algae right away. Brush the sides and bottom while filter runs to disperse the bleach. Next day add appropriate chemicals needed. Do not add more chlorine and don't cover pool. The excess chlorine will dissipate in a day or so.

    ONE IMPORTANT SUGGESTION!! .... from using the "bucket trick" .... get at least get one (2 if possible) Ratchet straps or bungee cords, to straps across the front of the lid on your bucket... BECAUSE ! --->> the lid will eventually start to give or pop loose & you could start to loose small pieces of the stuffing or polly fill into your pool... or the whole lid could pop off from over time, the water pressure & the positioning of the bucket laying on its side (wear & tear) could cause your lid to give... don't strap the lid down to tight, this too can cause the rid to buckle... but YES! other than a few lil "live & learn" misshapens, than this is a MIRICAL WORKER... it works sooo well that we leave ours hooked up to the filter now 24/7... it just takes so much off the filter pump & cartridges work....
    **SPECIAL NOTE- Not to mention, it's very soothing & calming to listen to, that our neighbors, whom lives a unnoticeable away from us, has asked in the past, in a joking way, if we could turn our water fall back on lol... they say they live to sit on their front porch late of an evening & listen to it, that it sounds like a waterfall or creek running

Does this put more stress on your filter system? I have sand filter system along with a salt water chlorinator. So I am thinking I may have to disconnect my Salt water system in order to set this up? What do you do when you need to add water to your pool? Thank you for this video and information! Greatly appreciated!

      I am currently using this method, only been running about 30 min. I'm slightly worried about stress on the pump but I'm going to let it run overnight and will update in the morning!
      I'm also concerned that there isn't enough circulation since the outbound filter hose flow is now restricted by the bucket, but I'm periodically stirring up everything.all the comments are saying 12 hours and you're golden (or clear n this case)... so I'm trusting the process.

    • @burdigirl7769
      @burdigirl7769 Před 2 lety

      Im sure you have the answer already... But just in case...
      It cannot stress your pump whatsoever. It's just a second filter system. So instead of the outtake going straight into pool, it pours in & out of this bucket method & then into your pool. Super easy & no stress.
      To fill your pool: do the same thing... If using a hose, then it would be from hose to bucket & into pool 😁.

  • @ernestescareno8920
    @ernestescareno8920 Před 5 lety

    Would this method reduce the pump pressure? I too have a sand filter and I know you don’t have experience with one. I’m fighting what I believed was yellow algae since the pool was green, the side walls were green half way up, and there was sand at the bottom of my pool. I vacuumed to waste, then vigorously brushed everything, and finally triple shocked it turning the green water to cloudy blue. My problem is that no matter how many times I vacuum to waste, the sand looking debris collects again at the bottom of the pool with each time being less than before. Nonetheless it’s still there and won’t go away. Before watching your video, I read that a sock fitted around the return jet held together with a rubber band would do the trick. What are your thought on it? By the way, this is the best video hands down.

      Aaron Bell I have seen a couple videos where they did the filter off the end of the hose, but it was such a small surface area, I can only imagine having to change out the media quite a bit. This method with the bucket is very easy, and effective. I will eventually be setting up a square bucket that will be setup prior to the pump.

      Hi Frank. Actually this is something I was contemplating doing this season, but my only concern was if parts of the fill would get sucked in the hole at the bottom and than shot in to the pool or clogged up the hose. Since it is no big deal for me to rinse out the filter (the iron rinses right out), I just kept doing that. Also, when you have all the iron out and you are hooking the normal filter process back up, put a couple of broken up chlorine tablets in the center of the filter. This will dissolve in the water and when you run the filter the next time, it will clean out any left over residue. Hope that answers your question.

    I did 5his with 2 minor changes. I removed paper filter. If it was going to work, no sense in wasting a filter and I spun the bucket so the exit holes were on the upper side so it forced the water through more of the batting. Cleared over 5k gallons in less than 2 days.

    • @Christa-tl8jb
      @Christa-tl8jb Před 4 lety +1

      Jessica Gurich - Unfortunately it didn’t. I learned that when the iron water enters the pool through the hose it’s in a ferrous state. When it’s in that state is does not stick to the material in the home made filter. However, once chlorine is added to the water it changes the iron to a ferric state which means the charge of the iron increased which I’m assuming is why it causes it to attract and stick to the material in the home made filter. It’s a chemistry thing that is slowly coming back to me as I write about it. So basically it needs to be chlorinated for the filter to work.

    We have a jacuzzi 30 ft x 52 pool. had it for over 10 years. this year I'm having a terrible time getting it cleared up. I keep vacuuming g to waste but then have to refill (2 hoses for about 4 hours). we have well water. i was trying to figure out a way to vacuum to waste but recycle that water back in to the pool. think your idea might work for that? I'd have to hook up this system to my backwash port, run hose to the bucket and then then return that water to the pool.........currently I feel like I'm chasing my tail......

    • @lont3927
      @lont3927  Před 8 lety

      Hello ssarge2. Yes, I would give it a shot, it should work just the same for clearing up iron as well as algae and the like. Will take longer as the size of your pool is quite a bit bigger, but nonetheless. Also check your levels (chlorine, ph, etc.). You can get a rough idea just using the little paper sticks that have the little squares on them. You submerge them in the water and pull it right out. Wait 15 seconds or so, and match the colors up. Also, you may know this already, but in the hot summer months, you need to run your pump longer, and clean the filter every day after the pump stops. If possible, put a piece of chlorine tablet inside the filter when installing it back in the pump area if you have that style. Running the pump longer is key when it gets very hot and humid outside. With my pool, the recommended pump cycle time is 4 hours, but in the peak summer months, I run it 6 hours each day and clean the filter as well. Hope that helps.

      my chlorine is OK and I did add muriatic acid last night to lower the PH. so technically the pool is balanced, but still green and really cloudy..........never thought about putting a 'puck' in the basket near the motor.....
      I've been running my pump 24/7. In previous years I had it on a timer and it would run till 8pm - shut off and then start again at 8am. I can't say I've ever had this many issues with cloudy water........frustrating.
      went to walmart to pick up some polyester batting but ended up buying a polyester filled pillow instead. less expensive.....and probably more in it.........LOL

    • @lont3927
      @lont3927  Před 8 lety

      If your water is mainly green, not brown in color, and it feels slimy, your probably dealing with algae. If that is the case, you need to get your chlorine level up, and than run the filter system through the material, and stir the water by brushing the sides and bottom. Don't panic on the cloudiness, it will clear up.

    Hi I think this idea is great! However, if you've got through the roof iron levels (too many scoops of powdered iced tea mix!) it's not going to work. Tried hundreds of $'s worth of chemicals and upgraded filter..iron fell to bottom and water was clear as chemicals stated would happen but when you try to vacuum it, it re- mixes (like powder) and water is green again! This dropping of iron sediment will also happen naturally if water is left completely still and untreated btw, but not overnight. Chlorine (bleach of any kind) reacts with iron, turning water green. After a few years of this, someone suggested baquacil. I switched and had clear water overnight with no sediment! Baquacil doesn't cause reaction. Highly suggest! Wish I'd done it way sooner. I do have iron removing systems but a pool calls for alot of water. When I ordered water from fire dept for new larger poll ...they also brought iron! Backwash frequently though because the suspended iron IS still there and going into filter. Hope this helps anybody with iron troubles. Hate iron! But pool water looks like crystal!

Go to one that's pro BaquaciI or they'll try to talk you out of it so they can keep selling you expensive products that don't work n drive you crazy. My store ran me broke n nuts for 3 yrs till I asked for BaquaciI (a friend uses it) n they were like 'oh yea baquacil is good, doesn't react with iron. Why? You wanna try it?' Omg holy cow!! Really?? Hello toby. Unfortunately, I do not have any experience using the sand filters, nor have I had to use them since the filter solution I mention in this video works like a champ, and really there is no need for the other filters. I don't know the size of your pool to be able to comment on the length of time it is taking you to clear the iron from the water, but my suggestion would be where the return comes back in to the pool, I would connect that hose to the filter solution I have in this video. It should solve your problem and take much less time to clear. Let me know if that helps. Good luck.
