  • This is a DIY solution for getting rid of nasty brown pool water. This is usually caused by filling your pool with well water. The iron in the well water reacts with the chlorine and turns the water brown. The items can be purchased mostly at Walmart for under $30.

    I can't believe that a $3.50 bag of stuffing did what $40 worth of chemicals couldn't do!! I didn't bother with the iron out, just packed an old winshield washer bottle I had laying around & let it run overnight. In the past I was able to get chemicals to work, but it was very expensive, and I had to spray out the filter about every hour. This is truly "set it & forget it" I feel better running fewer chemicals in my pool. Just chlorine tabs & shock, when needed. Less time maintaining and more time playing is always a good thing! There are many methods out there that I've seen / tried, and this one is the cheapest, easiest, and most effective way to go from the Amityville well to a crytal clear pool!! Thanks so much brother!

    I was FREAKING OUT~! My water looked muddy. Couldn't see the bottom. I live over 2 hours from a pool store to even try any iron product. We got the items (did not put iron out in the pool because you shouldn't) Hung it in the pool at 3pm. Changed the bottle out with another at midnight (which it was GROSSLY BROWN) Woke up in the morning, OUR POOL WAS SPARKLING CLEAN! I CRIED!!!! It is day 4. We hang the jug out everynight and still get some filtering through but its barely a tinge. WE CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH!!!!!!! SMARTEST IDEA ON THE INTERNET!!!!

    This is an amazing solution. We had to use four of these diy filters but our pool is now crystal clear!!! We have high manganese and iron and I put in chlorine tabs and it turned brown. Because of this solution, its clear again! Two years fighting with brown water and no more! Thank you!!!!

    I want to say THANK YOU!! I had my pool CLEAR within 32 hours without chemicals. I didnt want all those chemicals (pool stores wanted me to put 3 different things there) in my pool and put my 1yrs old grandson in the pool. I did change it up a bit and made it re-use-able container with a screw on lid. It was small. I changed the stuffing/batting about every 8-10 hours. It was really amazing to watch. Thank You SO SO Much!!

    We are in the process of doing this. This morning our pool was greenish and cloudy. Most likely due to the amazing amount of chemicals my boyfriend dumped into it yesterday. I found this video last night. I went and bought the stuff I needed to try this. The filters were very orange. This morning we hooked this filter up to an old sump pump we had laying around instead of using the filter. We went to breakfast came home like an hour later and the filter was orange. You could see rust sludge in the bottle. We took that one off and put a new one on. Two hour later we can see the bottom clearly Thank you so much. You have saved us a lot of money and time.

    Saw this video after trying the bucket method with our pool. Husband (6’4”) set it up on the ladder of our 18x48” Intex Easy set pool. It was working but the lid popped off and I was struggling with managing the bucket - I’m a5’4”. Husband went out of town. I had to add 2 bags of shock to the pool as our well water is horrible. We’re in the eastern panhandle of WV and sit on the Marcellus shale deposit - pure iron. Second bag of shock turned pool black again. Decided to try this method since I could manage with or without help of husband. Wasn’t able to locate our shop vac extension tube and none of my vacuum attachments were appropriate. Went to my local Ace Hardware store and found a $2.39 9” Pool Hose Connector that fits a 1-1/2” and 1-1/4” hose - it’s a tapered gadget that is the narrow 1.25 on each end and then steps up to 1.5 in the middle. Part number is 87572. I grabbed my Glacier water bottle, jammed this little gadget into the opening after stuffing the polyfill as tight as possible. I really had to jam it in to get a secure connection. Then I used the metal clamps and tightened down using a wrench to get the tightest, most secure connection (bucket method was a comedy of errors with hoses where I ended up soaked over and over again). Put in black plug so pool wouldn’t drain on output hose. Disconnected, attached to my bottle filter and secured it to my ladder. My pool was black when I started. My biggest issue was patience. BE PATIENT; this method works. We are 24 hours after attaching. My bottle is BLACK inside, so I’ll make a secondary bottle to swap today. However, my black water is now more in line with what you see at the start of the video. And it will continue to clear. I’ll need to go stir the settled iron. I anticipate my pool will be back to blue by tomorrow. Plus my chlorine is still way too strong to swim and my pH is coming in line with swimmable levels. My first bag of shock didn’t even register on my test kit - that’s how bad our water is out here in the country. Good luck - get yourself a few of these for 5 bucks, get a pillow from the dollar store and unstuff and you’ll be on your way to a great summer. Thanks for the great video, ARCHunter - wish I could post a few pics of my progress. :) POST NOTE: 6/16/21 - it took 5 days running the pump 24x7 and six bottles to remove the iron from my pool. My best advice, be patient and let the super filter work. My pool couldn't be prettier today.

    This is one of the best DIY i have ever done! This is the second year I have used this idea. I used it last year to help filter the grey shrift stuff let in our pool after clearing up an age problem. The water was as clear and beautiful as the day we filed it. This year right after getting the pool up, I blew out the tendons in my foot. I could not do anything for 3 months to clean the pool until this week. The pool actually did great, but I could not get all that fine grey "stuff" out of the pool. Some of it always filters back in, and I'm obsessive about having crystal clear water. I made a new bottle filter and 24 hours later were back in business. Beautiful water. it's also awesome to get up in the morning and see all that grey in the cotton. Thanks so much for sharing! !

    So last year I did this. It worked. But I'm pretty sure I got better results because I actually used "ultimate metal control" from pinch a penny pool supply. Now, this stuff is $25 on its own, however, I had an old pillow that I used the stuffing out of and a Gatorade bottle on hand. Drilled the holes, hooked it up and in 3 days the water was CRYSTAL! After it was clear I never had to use it for the test of the summer. I have a 18x48 ultra metal frame pool and the hoses are a little different.., so the small end of the vacuum extension gets put into the mouth of the bottle and the large end gets shoved into the hose. I'd also like to note that you can somewhat "backwash" the Gatorade filter by hanging the filter out of the pool first, turn pump off, allow water to drain from bottle filter, turn pump back on and it will BLAST the orange out. This is why you need to make sure this is not pointing in the direction of the pool. Do this a couple of times and you're ready to fikter some more. If you DONT backwash, you will lose pressure which means you'll lose suction and you'll take forever to get all the water filtered. Also, this year we drained our pool because we let it turn green,.. So I hooked up my filter/ Gatorade bottle minus the metal sequestrant and it DID NOT do anything close to what it did last year. Soooo, if you don't use the metal control you won't get the results you're looking for. One more thing, it's probably the same thing possibly, but I'm just not big on putting iron out in my pool, where as the metal control that's made for pools plainly states that it's safe to swim in.

    I like the towel idea I haven't thought of that. As far as the iron out goes I only use a little bit and just add a minimal amount until the water is clear but I still use the chlorine, conditioner, shock treatment etc so I would think it would still be safe to swim in as long as you don't overdue it with the iron out. Thanks for the comment.

  • @culator1
    @culator1 Před 9 lety +3

    When you have iron in your pool, the best way to get it out is by using CuLator Metal Eliminator. It works with sequestering agents, but actually grabs the metal out of the water. The little bag of CuLator fits into your INTEX pool and will work for a month or more depending on your metal concentration.
    Anyone who is using well water should get CuLator to help solve this ugly water problem.

    • @ARCHunter411

      Edna Quick Try some sequestrant and CuLator Metal Eliminator. When you use salt water, it adds some iron to the water plus it pushes the pH up which makes the metals show up. CuLator will get rid of iron and copper and many other metals to make your pool beautiful!

    It's called a forum, and it's called a hose clamp. I'm glad it worked for you and thank you for taking the time to make the video. But I found the real issue with these pool is the insufficient filter/pumps they come with. I found a hayward sand filter and pump on a local sale and holy crap...night and day! Few hrs a day and this shit looks like drinking water it's so clear (but obviously a proper ph AK balance sustained with the right amount of chlorine is my main kick ass component)

  • @ARCHunter411
    @ARCHunter411  Před 11 lety +4

    Try using the vacuum that came with the pool but instead of using the mesh trap try zip tying an old sock to the vacuum and that should help suck up some of that iron that has settled to the bottom but those vacuums that come with the pool are a piece of crap so it might not completely solve your problem.

    The amount of time that this trick cleaned up my pool is crazy, (in like an hour) I could see my pool floor
    I have well water, all my levels test fine, but it’s so mucky and green (looks like creek water)
    and now I’m able to see the bottom of my pool after running this water jug trick for an hour or so, it’s crazy
    Thank you so much, you’ve saved me so much time and money with this cheap trick. I’ve used all sorts of chemicals to help with this murkyness and nothing has helped. (Then I have to buy other chemicals to get my water back into safe condition) saving so much money now
    I have a filter running 1500 gallons an hour almost all day for weeks and it was not cleaning it up.
    And this just worked so great. And it’s so cheap.

    Usually that green color is caused by copper in the water. When I had a hot tub, I had to add a bottle of “metal gon” whenever I changed the water. Not sure if the iron out does the same, but if not, look for something like Metal Gon that neutralizes the copper.
    And for the cloudiness, that’s usually due to not regularly using chlorine (or not using enough). You need chlorine test kits to make sure your chemicals are in balance, particularly the chlorine parts per million.

    • @ARCHunter411
      @ARCHunter411  Před 4 lety +1

      I don’t think I had much copper. The water in the video was shown only hours after it cleared from the iron and I hadn’t added any chlorine yet. I always tested my water after it was cleared and tried to keep all my pH levels correct which was a constant battle. I think that was due to me using iron out

      Hi Arc. I have a heavy concentration of iron in my water (I am on a private well). I shocked the pool as directed per the pool instructions and it turned to a very dark ugly brown. I couldn't see the bottom of the pool (it's only 42" deep). I saw your video and gave it a try. I went through 5 of your filters over a day and a half, and the water is now crystal clear (unbelievable). WOW. Also, some people seem to be having a problem connecting the outlet hose from the pool filter pump to the home made filter. I used a piece of 1" PVC pipe. The diameter of the PVC is perfect for the Intex hose and the juice bottle opening (you still need the hose clamps). Hope this helps other people. This system you developed really works.Thanks Arc.John D.

      I agree buying an after market filter is definitely worth the investment. We bought a salt water filter this year because I was tired of the hassle and water has been perfect so far. The homemade filter is a cheap fix but definitely a short term solution as it's more hassle than I'm willing to deal with.

    Did this without the use of any iron treatment and it worked great. I did not use the vacuum extension just hooked the pool hose straight to bottle but had to put thread tape around the bottle so water would not leak out. Make sure if anyone is helping you that you let them know not to turn off pump then turn it back on with the bottle still in pool if you do it will shoot the rust back into the pool. Remove bottle from pool and before you place bottle back in pool turn pump on and let it run until you see that there is no more rust coming from bottle then place back into the pool. Thanks for the video.

    Hey, just saw your video on this. I'm gonna give a try as well. I have a pool exactly like yours, just smaller (10' x 30") and after I started treating the pool it went greenish-brown in the pool and my filter was brown. I did fill my pool with well water as well and didn't realize this would happen (not great at chemistry). My fiance and I thought maybe it was the tree pollen (set up the pool a little too early in the season) but after reviewing this video, I'm 99% positive it's the same problem you described here.

    • @ARCHunter411
      @ARCHunter411  Před 9 lety +2

      If you have well water then I would say it's the chlorine reacting with the iron in the water and the cheap filters that come with the pool won't filter it out. This is a quick fix and does the job quickly but is a pain to keep up with. If you want a more permanent solution with less hassle and don't mind spending the extra money I would go with a sand filter or a salt water system.

    • @DDCRExposed
      @DDCRExposed Před 9 lety

      ARCHunter411 I'll keep the sand filter in mind, provided it's not overly expensive. I just got all the parts together, stuffed a water jug with the pillow material, hooked it up and within 20mins, I'm already seeing the same effect you showed in your video. Thanks for this video and the advice, you're a pool/time saver!

      I had issues connecting the tube to the make-shift filter, so I used a rubber glove and rubber band to seal off the end of the hose to the new filter, worked like a charm.

  • @ARCHunter411
    @ARCHunter411  Před 9 lety +1

    Just add a little bit and see how it does then keep adding more as you need too. You'll just have to check pH levels and get those squared away before you swim.

    Thanks for keeping this vid up! I was in the middle of a week long battle with my pool and I was loosing. The water had turned green overnight which I thought was algae so I did the shock and algaecide and nothing changed so I shocked it again, nothing. Next day I was horrified to find brown water. Had no idea this could happen. I decided I lost and was going to drain pool. But I found your video and said why not. I built my polyfil filters on 2 pumps and used the iron out. Next day pool was the same I dumped in more iron out and now pool is blue. I can't believe it! I have a 48" x 15Ft pool. If you hadn't done this video my pool would be in a dump somewhere. I filed my pool a week ago and shocked it with complete shock. And when I did my water turned orange. After watching this video I went and got all of my supplies. It took awhile to get all of the batting into the bottle. The only thing I had a problem with was connecting the shop vac hose to the water bottle. I had to cut three slits in the rim so it would close tighter on the bottle. I also vacuumed the pool after 4 hours of the pump running and changed the filter. Other than that this totally is worth the money.

  • @TheMikem1968

    This idea works even better if you have a very powerful pump - I happen to have a submersible pump rated at ½ HP and just got a very small 8 ft intex pool (my first pool) - my problem? Well water - I ran the damn well down and all this dirt and iron started going into my pool (never mind that we had no water in the house for a while) - I'm VERY glad I found this on the web and other similar ideas - I decided instead of using the very weak pump that came with my tiny pool, I'd build my filter using a bucket and the lid, grab a shop vac fitting and some hose clamps - hook it up to the submersible pump and drop that sucker in the pool and let her rip! -- I'm telling you in a few hours my water was crystal clear - not bad considering that's about 650 gallons of water that needed to be cleaned up. My "guesstimate" is it took maybe 3 hrs to clean up the water but I let it go on for a full day anyway - , for my tiny pool - the pillow batting is still clean enough to use again if need be, BUT I may use this whole concept to build a better full time pump and filter system.

    Thank you so much I followed your instruction pool is clearing up the iron in the water Because our well has a slow recovery we need to use water runoff from the rain via stream. Thank you

    This worked awesomely! We couldn't get our pool water clear and this worked, so well it was crazy! It turns the poly fill a brownish orange color, and it got our pool pretty clear. Now, for our pool it didn't work in 2 hours. We had to hook two different ones up, and get in and mix it up, but that could be because of our filter system. If one doesn't work, try again. It definitely helps! In PA that iron out was only $4 for one. Definitely a cheap fix!! This was a weekend project just because of the time it took to run through our filtration system.
