The 2018 NFL Draft will be known for many things: The quarterback-heavy nature at the top of the draft, several high-profile picks that never panned out (for a variety of reasons), and the emergence of superstars that came from high-risk draft selections. The successes, the flops, and the mehs are always a part of every draft, and this one is no different. It's been five years, which is a good time to get a gauge as to how each selection went.
Join me as we go over every pick in the first round (poorly) and assess their impact at the NFL level. There were some ones that blew up in my face. Just saying.

Tell that to Jamison Williams Tree
Gotta love hypocritical sponsorships. I'm pointing at the NFL, not at you Tree. Get that money!

This is such an underrated series
It really is, I wish he would do this for Older Drafts as well
@@MazeDaGr8 that would be great
@@MazeDaGr8 maybe some legendary or horribles ones, he could do on the NBA, maybe the NHL, MLB... (not the MLS, not even the teams give a shit about that)
@@FelipeYoshioCordeirodeSouza If he does the NBA draft, then I would find it hysterical if he graded all 2000 first round picks. That draft has a ton of garbage to sort through, in most people’s opinion.
@@fortynights1513 HAHAHAHAHA to think that the best player from that class was Turkoglu LOL
Oh, 2018... With Baker, Allen, Lamar, Donald, and Rosen. What a draft...
Not to mention guys like Roquan Smith, Quenton Nelson, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Denzel Ward, Tremaine Edmunds, DJ Moore, Vita Vea & more. And those are just the guys drafted in the first round.
Bro tried sneaking in Rosen and Darnold 💀
@@davidpearson5208 wdym they were definitely in this draft. Only proof I'm aware of that Rosen was a real person.

David Akers announcement for the Eagles drafting Dallas Goedert in Dallas of all places will always be one of the best moments in Draft history.
@ReinSouls he basically started all the whole "trollin' rival city team at the draft" thing every guest announcer does now 😂😂
@@Ma5t3rKush89 It kinda started a year earlier, when Cowboys legend Drew Pearson trolled the Philly audience.
@@Ma5t3rKush89 Actually, the prior year, Drew Pearson trolled Philly.
Then everyone roasted Dallas in Dallas. Ackers being the best troll of the bunch.
"Hey Dallas fans, last time you were in a super bowl NONE OF THESE DRAFT PICKS WERE BORN YET" - David Akers, defining what it looks like when a place kicker is "on the jazz"
I remember being so surprised by Akers' voice like "oh THAT'S what he sounds like"
I think Baker deserves a revisist on that "bust" label. Thank God Tampa did him justice.
He’s still a bust
@@yetekt6953how much did you earn in your AAF career ?
@@yetekt6953 Care to explain?
@@AutoArtemAuto he’s a 1st overall pick and so far in his career the only thing he’s done is make 1 pro bowl.
@@yetekt6953 And won a divisional title, and two playoff wins (Not to mention helping lead the Browns to their first playoff appearance in 18 years and helped them win it). Baker just needed to be in the right situation. Just hated how the Browns did him. At least Tampa did him right.
I really like this concept of revisiting Drafts every five years
Although I hope you consider doing this for even older Drafts like say 2012, 2001 Maybe even '89
89 is notable for the four Hall of Famers in the first five selections, and Steve Atwater later in round one also made it in.
Not as much depth as some years that are considered as good as it is typically (23 total pro bowlers is actually pretty low compared to some), but the best selections make it an excellent class overall.
A hot take I have related to 1989’s draft:
Tony Mandarich in 1989 is certainly a terrible pick, but he’s not the worst pick ever.
True, he was an unsuccessful tackle who was gone in three years (would be ok for Indy years later though), and the next three picks were Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas and Deion Sanders.
But if Green Bay wanted to take a tackle, then 1989 wasn’t the year to take one; none made a pro bowl or received any individual recognition from what I can tell.
While the Hall of Famers afterward were right there, none were linemen.
Todd Blackledge in 1983 was a far worse pick. Sure, eighth overall vs second, but he didn’t pan out, and Dan Marino and Jim Kelly were both taken by the next Kansas City pick so they missed out on Hall of Famers who could have played the same position.
I would love to see Tree get Ryan Leaf to join him for a draft of that late 90s-mid 00s era
In fact, if possible id make Ryan Leaf your go-to tag partner for crapping on drafts and/or giving drafts their due. Also I imagine he and tree would get on well... and I imagine he has a legendary F U Spanos buried within him 😂
@@fortynights1513 Kansas City tried this exact same strategy again in 2017. But this time, they would fix that mistake by drafting what could possibly be the most talented QB in NFL history when his career is all said and done.
The rest of the AFC West is going to hate Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs for years to come, especially my Broncos. I wasn’t alive in the John Elway-era (I was born in 2002), but man, do I wish I could go back to those days.
Drafts that old have been revisited time and time again, especially notable ones like those. I imagine tree isn’t in a rush to just repeat the things that have already been said million times, it’s hard to add anything new, especially when the players have all retired and don’t have a chance to change how people view them.
Yes PLEASE tree
2018 really was a fantastic draft for the Ravens. Even with how things have played out since then, getting Lamar, Mark Andrews, Orlando Brown, Deshon Elliott, Bradley Bozeman, and Gus Edwards in the same year is just awesome to see.
Ravens definitely got a haul of great players in the draft that year.
"Even with how things have played out since then" right. Roman "just played out" calling The Worst passing plays for three years czcams.com/video/JgfB_4DgnEQ/video.html, Harbaugh & the owner "just accidentally" kept him on.
I'm absolutely 100% certain that their intent in doing this was to sink *the team* & not specifically LJ8's chances of getting a big paycheck. Absolutely certain. & I'm also 100% certain that the Giants would rather pay Daniel Jones that much $ just to keep their offense stagnant than to pay just a little more to get LJ7 to win them a super-bowl. I'm also 100% certain that the Patriots, Broncos, Jets, Dolphins, Commanders, Seahwaks & every south division team (except Jacksonville) is 100% certain of their super-bowl winning hopes without him.
Especially the Bucs who aren't rebuilding & are going to make it with Baker Mayfield. All of this just "worked out." 🤭 🙄
And yet they haven’t done shit with that haul
Too bad they missed so badly on Hurst with the first pick knowing what Andrews did (not to mention the next TE picked, Dallas Goedert, has been better than Hurst too)
@@ZJBorg tbf it's not like Hurst is a bad player, it's just that both the guy drafted after you and the next guy drafted to challenge you were so good
i'd classify baker as a meh pick rather than a bust, but i appreciate the detailed background you've given acknowledging that the browns failed him in many ways. i have serious doubts that allen or lamar would've survived the dysfunction either
the man had a new coach every year except years 4 and 5 how he did well there is beyond me
He’s a bust 😂 Labum has one less playoff win and he’s a bust 😂
@@calcaleb7041 how. He literally turned around that franchise in 2 years and he was one bad call away from a afc championship appearance. He’s definitely a meh
He is only a bust as a #1 overall pick.
1st overall better be a all pro HOF the Best in the Draft. BusT
Considering that PHI didn’t have a first round pick, they found a ton of talent and future starters in this draft.
Honestly might be one of our best drafts.
When you had that amazing first appearance in the second round, you know things are going to be good.
Jordan Mailata in the 7th round was a home run. A basically worthless pick, and they went with a guy who’d never played a down of football before, they probably didn’t expect much but it couldn’t have been more worth it. I remember seeing the Rugby highlight reel and thinking “If this guy figures out football he could be insane as an athletic tackle.”
Funny thing about Mailata, there was only one other team who even bothered to scout him at the pathway program. Tree's Pittsburgh Steelers, who probably would have taken him at 246 had Philly not swapped 7th rounders with the Patriots
@@alexrudolph301 As a football fan, I love to see it. As a Giants fan, I hate to see it. Jeff Stoutland is the best in the biz.
Look forward to this every year. Practically every take Tree has is freezing cold after 5 years
i mean hindsight is a bitch sure look at 2021 literally every single NFL fan said Jalen Hurts was a writeoff and what did he do the next season ? lead the Eagles all the way to the Superbowl where he came Heartbreakingly close to winning a Ring hell even Josh Allen was said to be a Writeoff after 2 seasons yet he's now the best QB the Bills had have since Jim Kelly tbh that's not saying much but still

@@jennyanydots2389 you need to repent for your dirty mind. a "hot take" becomes "freezing cold" if it is very inaccurate 5 years later
Baker change this grade literally the season after this was posted. Talent always stands out

Wow looking back the 1st round was absolutely loaded with talent.....and Josh Rosen
Correction. "And Rosen and Darnold
Rosen May have had some ability, but he clearly had ego issues, and didn’t pan out.
I WAS SO WORRIED THIS WASNT GONNA COME OUT. I love this series thank you Tree!
2018 is an interesting bunch to unpack. The teens of round one especially.
Also, hot take of mine: Saquon Barkley may be the last running back to be taken as high as he was here because of how much value individual running backs are said to have to most teams now.
Agreed. Bijan is the best prospect since Saquon and he might not go top 20
@@willclapp1845 He went 8 to Atlanta
@@silkychris999 great player but holy reach for a position u didnt need to improve on
Not a hot take rbs are not highly valued anymore.
Saying baker was a bust even 8 months ago was crazy ngl but it’s even more crazy now
For Cleveland, he was. He had four seasons of incredibly uneven play that didn't get the Browns anywhere of note (that they won a playoff game for the first time ever with him is nice but like... they were playing against a paper tiger. Fucking Tim Couch could have won) and got ran out of town before his rookie contract was finished for barely any compensation. For a first overall pick? That's a bust.
And now Baker is a franchise qb leading Tampa Bay to success after losing BRADY of all people! Fortune reversal
Great to see Baker turning it around and picking up the pieces.
Yup, had a great run into the playoffs that shows he still knows how to do it
Boy oh boy what a draft class this was. I think this was the first draft class where people started to realize that outside of generational talents like Joe Burrow, the term “NFL-ready QB” began to collapse. Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold were the two that people deemed as “NFL-ready QBs” and they were the biggest busts of the QB class this year.
Rosen was so NFL ready that the Cardinals brought in Sam Bradford to start the season.
Somehow, Tree unjinxed Baker.
As an Eagles fan, that David Akers clip there will forever be absolute gold.
Agreed and One of My Favorite Moments in The NFL Draft As a Eagles Fan Myself!
I would love to see a Revisiting for NHL draft classes. So many of those picks become complete busts and others are grand slams
I want to see the 2015 draft
This please. My coyotes draft choices could be an entire essay In terrible choices
same
I would like to do a 2007 NFL Draft because that draft is identical to 2018 NFL draft.
@@Ibelikemj or the 2017 draft when the Flyers take Elias Pettersson instead of uber bust Nolan Patrick.
The 2018 class is probably one of the most packed classes ever. Very rare that this many picks end up working out.
yeah, I'm surprised looking at it just how many good players there are here
Especially for Quarterbacks.
2018 draft was a VERY enjoyable experience as a Ravens fan, paved the way for the greatest regular season in franchise history.
@@Dee-jd6ym If you mentally switch Hurst and Andrews in your mind then remember that Hurst's trade to ATL turned into JK Dobbins it doesn't feel so bad.
@@Dee-jd6ym Hurst was the right selection. It's just rotten luck that he never developed. The only reason we traded him after 2019 is that we needed our 2nd Round pick back after the NFLPA took it from us for tampering with DeAndre Hopkins. And it's ironic that the Ravens are trying a 2nd time to get him.
2019 Ravens were an excellent team that unfortunately didn’t win a playoff game.
Much like the 73 Rams, and to a lesser degree 11 Packers, and 87 49ers and a few others, they will go down as a statistically great, overlooked season because of the lack of a deep playoff run.
@fortynights1513 They were a fun team to watch but also ran into the worst possible match-up at the wrong time.
@@fortynights1513 i dont think they were particularly talented, just healthy
David Akers cutting a WWE heel promo at dallas at the end is one of my favorite draft moments OAT
It was glorious!
Who’s here after baker just blew the eagles back out
Got into your videos with the 2017 NFL Draft revisit. And here I am a year later.
nfl weebs unite
I feel like even at the time Tree made this saying Mayfield was a bust was a huge stretch but now its just laughable, of course he was failing when he was injured in 2021 and on the Panthers in 2022
Wonder if Baker will still qualify as a bust after a few more years rebuilding his career in Tampa. Dude did a fine job the year after this came out, we'll see if it continues.
A bunch of good suggestions for The Trade series:
The Trade: RG3 to the Redskins
The Trade: Trent Richardson to the Colts
The Trade: Mitchell Trubisky to the Bears
The Trade: Ryan Leaf to the Chargers
The Trade: DeAndre Hopkins to the Cardinals
Oh, yeah, the Colts pick turned into JOHNNY FUCKING FOOTBALL
The final seconds of the Ricky Williams video I think was a sign that a vid on RG3 is coming soon.
The sad thing is that I really do believe RG3 could have at least been a good QB, if not one of the best in the league, if it wasn't for THAT ONE LEG INJURY. I knew even watching the replay of it live that it was going to be a bad, career defining one.
i know it will be in the future but in like 3 years The Trade Aaron Rodgers to the Jets because it's crazy how it could be seen as a generational flop of a trade or it may even become one of the greatest trades of all time if the Jets can get a ring with him
The Trade: Randy Moss to the Raiders.
a.k.a.: Owner Red McCombs' final Fuck You to the Minnesota Vikings.
And how Moss was sent to his doom, until snagged by The Hoodie to revive his career as a Patriot.
I think Baker deserves a "meh". With all their QB picks in the first round he was the first to inspire any real faith in the team. One rough season caused the Browns to turn on him in an outright farce.
Also Denzel Ward being a success and Saquon not for injury concerns is weird. They have equal pro bowls and Saquon has three 1k yard seasons.
Baker as a bust is unfair in ways because if he never played with that blown shoulder it would be a different story. If he somehow revives his career in Tampa bay that’ll be nice.
It's also safe to say any of the other QBs in that draft wouldn't have done as well in the circumstances. Allen and Lamar would not have dropped into good systems, darnold and Rosen simply sucked. He was the best pick and did pretty decent all things considered
This was one of the best drafts in recent memory. I feel bad for Josh Rosen. Dude gets past around like a joint.
To be fair he did kind of behave like an asshole
Or like your mom's bee whole at the family Christmas party.
Tree gets his pick in before the clock runs out you love to see it 🥳
I wouldn't call Sony Michel a bust and I'm not even a Pat's fan...like you said, dude helped them get a ring!
Actually, he has two rings, he was also one of the important piece for Rams to win that Super Bowl.
@@taskdon769 …even better! NOT a bust.
Hes out of the league. WASHED@@LuigiL75
This really is a fascinating series. I also would love a 10 year rerecap of these drafts as well so you can look at a lot of these guys entire careers!
As a Ravens fan, this was our best draft since 1996, and its fitting that it was the last draft that Ozzie Newsome was in charge of. Look at who we got. Lamar Jackson, Mark Andrews, Orlando Brown Jr, DeShon Elliott, and Bradley Bozeman. That's close to a generational draft. Not to mention we made Philadelphia drink the stupid for Timmy Jernigan and Mike Wallace in order to get Lamar. Speaking of Lamar, and the Ravens, they are plotting a scheme in order for them to make a huge move for DeAndre Hopkins. We have Andrews, OBJ, and Bateman already, WE'RE GETTING D-HOP EVEN IF WE GIVE UP GUS EDWARDS AND DEVIN DUVERNAY! (The problem is that we have to compete with the Chiefs and Bills to get him) If we get Hopkins, Lamar is easily signing an extension.
Yeah you gotta point there, mate Yeah we've got some good players in the Drafts over the years but this was our best draft Overall in years. If we can get D-Hop and lamar signs this contract (along with staying healthy) then we should be good going forward
@@MazeDaGr8 Honestly I think we will get D-Hop even if we trade our 1st Round pick. Why? Because Deonte Banks, who pundits think the Ravens could take at 22, they might be able to get him in the 2nd Round. It would be a win-win trade. Arizona sheds the Hopkins contract and gets two 1st Round picks, Lamar gets another outstanding receiver to work with, the Ravens get a 2nd and 5th in the deal as well, and the Cardinals are out of Cap Hell. EVERYONE WINS!
@@michaelhession2105 Are you saying the ravens traded Jernigan and Wallace for Lamar? If so, your wrong. They traded the eagles 2 second round pics which the Eagles used on Dallas Goedert and Miles Sanders who were both great picks

Ohhh boyyy, now I can’t wait for the 2019 revisit.
Really happy to see Jakob Johnson in the "Notable undrafted players" category. Germany was thrilled when he made it to the league.

Man I love this draft class, when it's on the field.
This absolutely lifts my miserable day. I've been so excited for this video because I love when you tackle past history, it's one of my most watched Playlists. Thanks Tree 💛🖤💛🖤
This video series is what got me into your channel. Always gives me nostalgia
Coming back to this after Baker Mayfield became the first visiting QB to have a perfect passer rating at Lambeau Field. I’d say he’s a meh. Glad to see him turn things around with Tampa.
I've been waiting for this since last week. God bless Jaire "The Great" Alexander.
Speaking of which, Green Bay could've just taken Jaire at their original pick (#14) but the trade down with the saints (#14->#27) got them a 2019 1st, then moved up 9 spots with Seattle (#27->#18) for only a 3rd and a 6th to grab him. An absolute hosejob by Gutekunst in his 1st year as GM.
Also, loving your inclusion of Sonic CD music in your recent vids.

Ravens had an amazing draft in 2018
The injury theme was so strong with some of these poor kids. Penney in particular was sad because he clearly is an extremely talented kid. Hope he has at least one full season in the NFL before he's done. Also, Seattle should never use their first pick on running backs...it just doesn't work out for them.
They did not this year.
The last time we used a first round pick on a back and it worked out was Curt Warner in 1983 arguably (unless John L Williams was also a first in 86).
@@fortynights1513 haha, that's going back 40 years to find a good 1st rounder RB. I was thinking more along the lines of Penney (who sadly has been unlucky with injuries) or Christine Michael off the top of my head. Michael was a second rounder but Seattle's first pick, if I recall.
I honestly thought there was no way you would be able to accurately describe baker as the number 1 pick in terms of what happened and the bust/boom angle, but you nailed it. Impressive

This draft single handedly put the Ravens back into contention after years of mediocrity. Even if he leaves, Lamar was the right pick and has worked out wonderfully considering where he was drafted. Considering we also got Orlando Brown jr. and Mark Andrews makes this one of the best draft classes in Ravens history. If only we had actually kept Orlando Brown jr.
What irks me is that instead of hurst they could of drafted Ridley. Can you imagine how that would of turned out?
i mean damn they have made the Post season 4/5 of the next 5 years including back to back Division titles 2018,2019 and would have made 5/5 playoffs if it was not for that fluke win the Steelers got on them in 2021
@@OmegaReconGaming Calvin Ridley wasn't a need for the Ravens at the time. The reasoning was that they signed Michael Crabtree, John Brown, and Willie Sneed plus were rumored at the time to try and land Dez Bryant. Although they did get Dez, but not until 2020.
