I think the reason they made this stripped down version is to make the hardware useless for gaming, so clerks don't steal it or remove it from it's designed function to play their own games.
Or just change the code to not allow any unofficial apps
Funfact: The Nintendo 2DS also had only one Screen. It looked like it were two, but in reality, the casing just blocked the rest of it. Why? Apparently one big Screen was cheaper then two seperate one.
You have to be kidding....
I stand corrected.
Makes sense, it's not worth it to produce a new display with a custom size just for 1 specific device. Apple did something similar for their iphone SE to make it cheaper

Fun fact: DS also stands for "Developer's System". Nintendo gave it that name in 2004 (before it actually launched) because they wanted to create a device that is easy to program.

I find it fascinating that they found it economically worthwhile to engineer and manufacture DSi units with only one screen no buttons, and unremovable cartridges just for this specific purpose rather than just send out new carts that enabled this on whatever Download Station DS units that were already set up in retail stores.
its basically just a new hull mold, and with far less components. i would guess they even assembled them by hand and just took the components they needed out of the regular assembly process.
Also i guess these units were less likely to mysteriously disapear
Worked at Gamestop, I dont remember ever seeing this thing. Nintendo would just provide an actually DS/3DS unit and send whatever pokemon event carts they needed to.
@@sacul6470 these are JP exclusive
Its using a standard motherboard with just so of the extra parts not connected, so the only engineering to do is make sure the firmware boots without the peripherals connected which they probably had already done to make troubleshooting easier. Other than that there's the case which looks to me to not be production quality, its a prototype level enclosure basically. But i agree the savings wasn't likely the reason they did it, it was probably to keep them from disappearing like @UniTrader said.
@@sacul6470 these were only in Japan. That's why all of the menus and stuff were in Japanese.
It has a text box to enter a server address.
I can hardly wait for the ROM on that cartridge to be dumped and a Pretendo server to go up.
Omg yes, i wonder if you could push fake pokemon through it, have the game download the hackedmon. I am pretty sure there are systems out there to test if a pokemon is legitimate or not like at pokemon tournaments, would it get a pass or fail.
@@Kafj302 would probably be easier to do trade emulation tho, the private servers for that are already there.
also there's no systems to check if you cheated a pokemon, just if it's _technically_ possible (with the most RNG luck, extreme careful training, etc) to get the pokemon legit. so yeah they'll complain about a charizard having all the water attacks, or impossible to achieve stats etc, but they won't be able to tell a legit shiny feebas with ideal moveset apart from a cheated one.
because in the end, the game has to come up with the pokemon's data, so everything that goes into it is in the game's code, and they can't keep anything secret from you to prevent you just copying what the game would do.
Pretty sure it was ripped a while back. US/European cartridge code is "WDB-USZ/EUR". Or just look for "Nintendo Zone Wireless Distribution Box DS Card"

Haha, I released the Japanese Demo on my Twitter. The photo of my Twitter page on this video is actually Yoshi Touch and Go! 😂
Yoshi touch n go did require both screens
There are three things that made this thumbnail cursed. The one screen ds. The stylus with no hand holding it. And animal crossing that plays Mario.
And the Mario playing is for the 3ds
and the fact that it was playing with the cartridge ejected
The more you look at it, the worse it gets.
Don't forget the ac adapter isn't plugged in.
And also the whole thing is upside down/the screen is facing the wrong direction

Nintendo OS “Touching is better with one screen”
AC ww: you can do almost everything with touch
