      @@rietoh The brief summary is that ammonia-oxidizing critters (archaea mostly, and some bacteria) in this study preferentially lived in fine sponge over ceramic rings or sintered glass media.
      So you could do coarse-medium-fine (10->20->30ppi) sponges and it would work just fine, no need for fancy media. Coarser layers prevent clogs and 30ppi sponge houses most of the beneficial microbes.

    I had 60 + guppies, and once I got neon tetras which I didn't quarantine and put it in my main tank which were carrying ick and I couldn't spot on them yet.
    And boom in a week's time all the neon tetras and the guppies died.
    Never going to make that mistake again.
    Always quarantine the fish.
    Also quarantine your self if you feel sick during these pandemic times✌🏼

Now I just make sure there isn't something obvious in the tank I'm looking at and pick a healthy looking fish. Take them home, quarantine in a lot of salt for 2 weeks and asses for any disease after that and continue the quarantine

    I don't know if you have already answered this question, it would be very helpful to know just what one is looking for, when you look for problems. For example what does a mild case of fin rot look like on a particular fish, how does fin nipping differ. You have such an awesome educational content. I am in the process of starting my own tank using the lessons I learned from you. Keep up the great work! ❤❤🐠

    Hey Jason
    I think this is what has happened to me but I would love to hear your thoughts...
    I Have a Fluval corner tank around 90 USG with a Fluval 307 filter. My water temp is 80, PH steady at 7.2/7.3 ammonia is 0 Nitrate 0 Nitrite 0
    Recently I have had a loss of all of my cichlids...Bolivian rams, balloon rams and some good size angles. All of the rams showed no signs of infections or parasites...I guess the common theme would be they lose control of their swim bladders and are all over the place...and not all at one time...one after the other in sequence.
    In the tank I also have 9 Bosemanani rainbows in great shape, 15 neons, 10 harlequin raspora, 10 silvertips, 2 corey cats, 5 dwarf neon rainbow, 4 nerite snails and one cute L089 pleco...All very healthy and happy...They all came from the same store...but its only the cichlids that have been affected...I keep on top of the water changes to the tune of prob 1/3 a week change....any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics
      @PrimeTimeAquatics  Před 2 lety

      The load-shedding can impact beneficial microbes so stocking light and having fish that aren't high energy may help. Obviously, the trade-off with waiting to buy fish from your LFS is they might not be there when you come back, but waiting does help ensure the fish are healthy.

      Algae wafers are good (provided they have some type of algae as their first ingredient). I've had really bad luck with otos so don't feel bad. I think my water is too hard and the pH is too high for them.

    • @lisajligon
      @lisajligon Před 4 lety

      Otos are mostly wild caught, underfed during transport, and have a low survival rate. Ideally if you want to have them, wait for your tank to have mature algae before you buy them AND buy more than you intend to end up with. There's no such thing as too many. =]
