Me yesterday: should I get another tank.
Prime time aquatics: Yes
Me: hold my coffee
For a quarantine tank a new clean plastic tote can work too. Then all of your quarantine tank supplies can go neatly in the box with a lid. First aid kit for fish. A mobile fish clinic lol.
Was typing up the same thing. Easy to store away when not in use.
@@snubn0se yeah i do the same thing.
Thanks! that's a great idea!👍🏻
Yea i have a small Apt thats what i do. I actually just put it on the floor since its plastic dont have to worry about cracking. I have a sponge filter i use.
Ah, but here's the rub: buy quarantine tank ➡️ quarantine fish and add to display ➡️ stare at empty tank ➡️ get inspired by Small Scape video ➡️ set up new tank ➡️ buy new quarantine tank 🔄. It's a never-ending cycle!
Good one. Hopefully Jason will have a good tongue in cheek answer for this.
The struggle is real…
It’s called MTS - Multiple Tank Syndrome. It’s a disease that all of us have..lol
Top notch advice, only one problem the quarantine tank soon becomes a display tank and you have to get another one 🤪
This is exactly what has happened to me.
My 10 is going to get demoted back to quarantine/hospital when I upgrade to a 2nd 29g.
Ya, that can happen :-)
That's why u use a plastic tub😉
@@Runnygraph20 great idea 👍
Your description of what happens in these Facebook groups was hilariously spot on.
That's why I stay away form them :-)
It's exhausting especially when you're new. I've not joined any facebook groups but have felt the same about reddit. I'm almost a month into my first tank (no fish yet) and omg it's like pulling teeth to get an answer about things lol...so I figure out the best I can from youtube 🤷🏾♀️.
Belong to very few groups and comment on even fewer posts! But I have a question who stops at one tank.
I had to downsize to one 10-gallon for Cosmo due to an upcoming out of state move, from four tanks and 75+ fish (mostly fry and juveniles) of five species, plus countless dwarf shrimp. I am currently undergoing multi-tank withdrawal syndrome. Seriously.
This is SO important!!! It only took me one time of NOT quarantining new fish to learn my lesson. Never again.
I actually enjoy the quarantining process. I like the close observation, the biology of any disease I encounter and the science behind any remedies I may have to use. It's all part of the hobby that I'm addicted to.
I learned the hard way. I’d seen multiple videos saying to get a quarantine tank. Lost almost all of my fish in a 55 gallon. Lesson learned.
Thanks for this video. I cannot emphasize enough how important this is!
(Cheap) Quarantine tanks you get in the IKEA. I bought more than one 60-100l ikea boxes (plastic). That’s my quarantine tank for blackwater fish. Plus have a look at the second market. Got glass tanks for about 5$. Bought, tested and put in my basement. Too many? No. I had 2 60cm tanks filled with new fish quarantine and then I have realized sick fish and 3 sick shrimps with different diseases. I was so happy for having big boxes and extra tanks.
In particular some of my fish are older. Their immune system is not as good anymore and funcus have a way easier life.
Thank you
so I use a large black tub/ tote I bought at lows its about 20 gallons it has a sponge filter . every time a buy a " quarantine " tank it ends up getting full-time inhabitants and decor then I can't quarantine in it any more.....
For my quarentine tank i put in rainbow gravel cause i always wanted to try it but i like sand and natural tanks look better. So it was a perfect time to do it.
The posting for help and getting 200 questions back is oh so true! Blood sample and social security comment did make me lol!
I have that same Cubs blanket!
Good advice. I found out the hard way. I have a 10 gallon kit I bought at Petsnart. It included everything except a heater. Even had a net included.doing It’s a heartache if you don’t set up a quarantine tank and a hospital tank. Great seeing your video.
Those work great!
I envy you guys in the US for having those 1 dollar per gallon sales...no such thing in Europe, unfortunately:(
I also envy those super fish keepers that are able to build their own tanks...is like going in vacation to an exotic location and not having to pay for hotel room:)
HI ragnos, i remember you from another video and im planning to buy a big new fish tank soon and aquariums in my country are really expensive like 1000$ on a 200 gallon tank. Anyways i hope your black ghost knifefish is doing well
@@Gabydailyvlogs Hi Gabriel, I remember you as well:) Hmm...given you name, is a strong posibility that you are a fellow countryman :P
Ești cumva din Romania? :) I have not visit the local aquarium museum where I donated the black ghost knifefish, for some time, but I will contact the curator, in that regard, as I am curious as well.
In regard of the new tank, you can check what is available on second hand tanks (usually, a well made tank is good for about 10 years or more, a tank made by a known manufacturer, even more than that) or ask some local fish keeper store owners, sometime they offer tank building services as well, for a more affordable alternative to buying a new tank made by a known manufacturer (JUWEL or the like).
@@ragnos28 Da, sunt din românia lol
PS: Dacă ești din București îți recomand magazinul Coralis deoarece au tot ce îți trebuie.
I never find out about it and then everything left is 20gal. So it's not really great
Fr tanks are super expensive here
Thought this was going to be about starting a fish room, tbh....lol There aren't enough videos about QT. Thanks for doing this one!
The problem I have is that my quarantine tanks are becoming living spaces for more fishes.
I keep buying a new tank for "quarantine reasons".
I bought a 5 gallon minibow to use as a quarantine tank. It works great for smaller fish. The light and filter didn't last long but I thought it was too bright anyway for fish in quarantine and I had already added a seeded sponge filter. However, it is lightweight, fairly inexpensive, easily stored when not in use, and so small you can steal some of your main tank water to put in there so they have a head start.
Did anyone else's QT tank turn into a main display tank? haha.
Prof. right-on! ya know I enjoy the quarantine tanks as much as the display's
What’s wrong with my fish . Here is what I just faced . I couldn’t work out what was wrong . The fish well they were going mental trying to get out of the tank . I Put my hand in and got this weird prickling sensation up my arm , still puzzled . I looked at the power head on the filter and the cable had snapped at the back, but it was still working . and was sending the water live with electric ⚡️ .omg . I banged the power off and got a new power head on . 👍🐠 Even though my fish were temporarily frazzled. We all thankfully survived .
Glad you figured it out!
Love the intro scenario. Spot on.
Can use a plastic bucket of course, I use a 20 gallon one from IKEA+a seeded spongefilter from maintank, so depends on how you define multiple tanks.
I don't like using something you can't see through because it makes it harder to see fish disease.
Thanks so much for the sound advice!
Great information.
Great video by the way!
I learned this expensive lesson the hard way..... Very dam good advice
Hi Jason,
I have a question that might be silly. What is the filter "media" in a hang-on-the-back filter? Is it the cartridge?
I am a first-time fish keeper, and your channels are very informative. Also, I find the videos quite relaxing and fun. Keep the good work!
cycled/seeded sponge or any type of bio media preferably in bags. You want to stay away from carbon, purigen, or other chemical types as they will counteract the medications if you are using any.
@@serpico727 Undertood, thank you very much for taking the time to help!
Yep, or filter floss, sponge works too.
And that's why I have a splitter set up that I can throw in an old ice cream bucket for an emergency quarantine set up stashed in my fishtank stand. Any time I need it I toss it to the splitter on my air pump simple quick and easy.
When I had one tank I realized I needed another. Then the same thing happened, I need another tank. And another, and another, 😆
I learned the hard way with guppies. I now quareteen EVERY SINGLE fish for a minimum of 3 weeks. Depending on type I will prophylactic medicate..like guppies and parasites. I observe 1 week feed and build up immunity with clean water and good food. Medicate then observe 1 or 2 weeks after.
Nice job! A lot of my knowledge comes from experience. I share a lot of experience on my fish channel ;)
I'm currently treating my new Black Neon Tetras for Ick in my 10-gallon quarantine tank.
Sooo True! Been there…. Help the new ones tho Jason! 💕
I used medication because I thought my fish were getting dropsy. Killed all my plants, killed all my snails, killed loads of fish. The label and the guy in the fish store both said it wouldn't cause any harm to plants, inverts or fish. To be safe i even used slightly less than the recommended amount. But it still massacred the aquarium. I later found out that it was probably the food. Stopped using it and the dropsy like illnesses stopped!
This video answered a question that I had as to what to do with the quarantine tank after you were finished with your quarantine , another question would be how to deal with the tank if the new fish had had a problem, how do you make sure that its safe for when you need to use it again?
If the problem was treated with meds successfully the tanks should be ok. If not, I usually break it down and use a 10% bleach solution to clean everything.
Hey Jason! Kat from KatsAquatics here! I loved this video and thought it was very informative for new hobbyists! Im excited to see more:)
Thank you!
OH MY, are you a mind reader? I just went through this. I'm a newbie and I watched all the Beginners Guide to Fish Keeping 1-5...and when I was ready to go get my tenants I watched 10 Community Fish that do well together. So I bought 4 Cory's, 1 otocincius, 4 neon tetras, 4 cherry barbs, 1 ram cichlid, 1 dwarf gourami, and 1 peacock gudgeon. I lost 1 cherry barb, nor sure why. A couple days later I returned to the fish aquarium and got one more cherry barb and I thought I was getting another ram cichlid, but due to a misunderstanding I received a flower horn I didn't realize it was a FH until a couple days later. Oh no I tried to text the owner of the store twice and was ignored so I thought what would team Prime Time Aquatics do (WWJD?) And I thought ...they would have a spare tank obviously but I also remembered at one time they had to use a bucket. Which is what I did. I used my fish bucket, and I prepared it just like a new tank but, I didn't have a spare heater nor bubbler, so , I improvised I hooked new tubing to an air stone and put the bucket in my tiny bathroom with a lamp overhead and a space heater warming the room. Lol this is where it gets funny. You probably already know in order to get air into the bucket I just blew on the end of the new air hose every 30 minutes. I was thinking I wouldn't have to be doing this if I had a spare tank. So as soon as Petsmart opened I got everything I needed for my flowerhorn. He'll have to be alone cause he's too mean to be around my others. I guess now I need another setup to have as a quarantine tank. Lol sorry so long winded but I found it funny that you posted a video regarding this literally the day after I went through it. Thanks again you two, I really appreciate you doing what you do! Tina from Flint , Michigan.
Do you have video of woods like spider wood and talk about if they alter ph or if safe to plant on
i definitely don't do four weeks, but two weeks ish in order to run through two rounds of general cure is paramount. i have been fortunate to have never experienced a noteworthy bout with a bacterial illness. parasites on the other hand....
I think you can get away with 1 tank when its all new, because you'll probably add all the fish over the same few weeks. I would be very afraid to add new fish to an established tank though (spoken as someone who does not yet have a quarantine tank!).
I definitely need more tanks. And, possibly, an intervention. 😆
That description of seeking help online is too accurate.
great advice jason.
I'm incapable of keeping an empty tank for quarantine. Totes and buckets come in handy for those situations.
I can be hard to do :-)
My parents won’t let me get another tank because I’ve been wanting a certain one for ages but when I got it , I didn’t like it, but they won’t let me get another one because they keep saying nothings wrong with the one I have now
I learned the hard way - brought home Saddleback Columnaris to disastrous results and now I have a quarantine tank.
Very interesting and informative video 👍😊
Aww. I get it…. It’s important for the newer ones to know. A tote works, especially with all the trimmings added, or maybe a small plastic tank as a spare… But I was hoping for more enabling. 😂 One is never enough, and I wonder if I will really be satisfied until I have a tank just for plants… 🤔
The only problem with a tote is it's very hard to see ich and other diseases sometimes.
If you're like me, 1 tank just for plants will not be enough, I'm on #4 and counting 😁 but I think I need to start growing emersed in tubs. Running out of space for more fish 🙃
Thx Jason. I noticed you keep plants in your quarantine tank. If something does turn up in the fish being quarantined, and not successful in treatment of the fish, do you treat the plants in some way? I assume you’d sterilize the tank itself?
Those were actually fake in the 20 gallon :-)
You can never have too many 👍
Hi! I have 10 gallon fish tank for goldfish redcap so which filte is the best ?
This happened to my tank this week...
I purchased panda corydoras and a week later half of them are dead, one of my danios died, and i lost my hill stream loach all to some Ich/Bacterial infection :(
Here is my question/fear. How is a quarantine tank different from an uncycled tank? I understand you use filter media from a different tank, but that's not instant (or, I didn't think it was...)
The cycled filter media contains beneficial bacteria to help avoid ammonia issues.
Good Morning.
Hi Jason. I need your help, please. My Paradise fish has fluffy white stuff coming from two healing wounds along her dorsal fin. In all the research I've done it appears to be fungal rather than columnaris given the following treatments did not work: I did a 5d tx of Maracyn. No change. Did a 5d tx w/ Maracyn 2. No change. Did a 3d course of Kanaplex. No change. I did these w/ a 3 day break between treatments. Today I started a salt treatment in 100% fresh water matched to temp/pH. She is in a 10g quarantine tank. I'm starting 1T for q 3 gal for 5-7 days. If no change I'll up to 1T/2g of water, then 1T/1gal. if I see no change. In order to deal w/ ammonia, I'm guessing I do a 30% water change between treatments? How do I adjust the salt to keep the concentration from becoming too high? I've been dealing with this for over a month. The fish is eating, swimming, acting fine. I'm at a loss of what to do and have no LFS in my area.
You could try Expel F and or Maracyn Oxy?
This was cruel video for us with MTS
I use plastic totes
Yes I need another tank but can't find what I'm looking for. Could someone please help me find a 33 gal long. I'm in KY and don't mind driving
Usually an LFS can order them.
I've got 2 filters running in my main tank, to get the filter set up for my new tank, my question is how long do I need to wait for the bacteria to set up in that filter? Or should I just set up a new tank and wait, I was thinking the way im doing it will be quicker, I haven't even fill up my other tank yet
I usually wait about four weeks
@@PrimeTimeAquatics sweet thanks you
based on a true story.*me 3 months ago*.* I have one fish tank maybe I should get one more*.*me 3 months later with 8 tanks*.*me how did that happen*.
Hey 👋
So I have a question. I don’t really have much space in my parents house right now for a quarantine tank. But I think I might be able to fit a 5 gallon somewhere without taking up too much space… do you think I could make the 5 gallon work for small fish to fit into my main 10 gallon?
Sure
6 tanks
Should you quarantine shrimp? Thanks!
Most people don’t
I use a $5.00 tote.
I got one 75g tank. Yeah.....um...ugh!
I need a squadron of heavy tanks for my fish to crew
Ooh an excuse, like I needed one
Oh and I bought a 20 long on marketplace before I went to bed last night lolol
Omg. This story sounds too familiar 😕
Maybe a blood sample lol
You need as many tanks as you can fit.
Period.
Haha, true! How many tanks do you have?
