It’s a good point. The quality of fakes has dramatically increased in the last 5-10 years. It makes buying vintage stuff more risky. It’s also possible if the person didn’t flip it they might never know it was a fake until years later when it needs repairs. Crazy.

Good video, very informative. I'm going through everything I can now before I buy a Planet Ocean off of EBay. Even with their Authenticity Guarantee, I still want to do all I can to make sure I'm not going to spend thousands on a good fake. Thanks for the video!
To be honest you really can’t tell the difference between a real good fake and the real thing these days. Even Omega’s management has been caught faking their watches. I won’t buy used luxury watches unless I can have them verified. Or only buy from a trusted authorized dealer. Good job and thanks for this very helpful video.

I found your video very informative as I had recently purchased a planet ocean myself from an overseas watch boutique without physically seeing the watch. My intention was to take the watch to my local authorised Omega dealer to have them inspect it, but after watching your video, I am confident mine is not a fake. I really appreciate this video as you don't see many honest watch guys admitting when they got duped. Props to you for trying to help the community learn. The one thing I noticed fairly quickly when looking at the fake was the actual omega symbol. It looks like it is offset slightly and not as crisp as the real one, but that could just be the angle of the video. I only say this because I got scammed on an SEAMASTER
300 2551.80.00 2551.80.00 with the same issue but luckily the dealer was authenticity guaranteed. That model of omega has a painted on symbol and it was not quite right when looking at it in person.

I will not pay more than a price of a fake unless they have boxes, receipts, serials match to the manufacturer and I know the seller personally. Too many high quality fakes out there to chance it with used watch.

it was the bezel pearl that has always been a giveaway it actually kept me from getting a rolex for so long because the way their pearl is oversized for the triangle but i got past that. great you guys are pointing this stuff out cheers
Thanks for this video. I bought one today from a pawnshop, has no box or papers. Got a receipt though with the serial number written on it, Was a little sceptical in not buying from an AD. After watching this I think my watch qualifies as an authentic (hopefully). Going to take it to an AD soon for verification of its authenticity. Will make a video of the watch soon.
Came back from the AD today. My watch was in fact a genuine. Is so hard to be certain these days. Fakes makes me quite paranoid. Worst invention ever..

Thanks man! I was just looking at one of these on ebay, the seller is in europe, only has 13 reviews, the price, under 1k, a lot of red flags. I already figured that it was a fake. But it got me wondering. How could I tell? And would I be able to tell from the listing? After watching your video, the first thing that I notice is the most obvious and the first thing that you bring up. The "Helium valve" As you put it (I'm new to watch collecting) Is definitely above the 50 in this listing. In exactly the same spot that your fake was in. So I just want to say thank you, I learned something and immediately was able to apply it.

I'd say if you are buying from someone and they send you an out of focus 2 fps video in bad lighting, I would not trust that person.

Some great tips in there.
I recently inspected a fake one as well and have noticed a few other things.
First there is no red gasket around the helium escape valve to let the wearer know its open.
Second, the marking on the lugs are engraved instead of stamped (?) the letter Quality is bad.
Third , and this Im not sure about but when I shake the watch its noisy. I think I read somewhere that it should be quiet.
There is also a bit of play in the bezzle. Again not sure how much in a real one but I suspect not this much.

The problem is that as soon as the Chinese learn what's wrong with their fakes they put it right. You can buy $20 knock offs that are easy to spot these are the same watches they were selling 5-8 years ago as AAA grade the AAA grades now are so good that you are having to use a lot of magnification or literally take them apart to be certain. and then there are the super clones costing around $1000 best of luck spotting those.
the only obvious one to me is the placement of the pearl marker on the bezel ive never seen an authentic one that isn't exact

Hi, I want to point out that there are many genuine Omega whose helium valve' position starts after the 10 o'clock marker. So the person who pointed to you is incorrect.

With Rolex the fakes are getting so good that unless you handle these watches extensively or have a genuine right there to compare you run the risk of getting burned. I invested in the correct (and very expensive) Rolex caseback removal tool long ago. Checking the movement is still the most reliable way to verify authenticity because the exterior anti counterfeit measures have largely been defeated. I always buy full sets with box/papers. The accessories are actually a good way to verify authenticity before you even start to look at the watch. Always buy from a trusted seller that authenticates and guarantees the authenticity in writing for life. Buy your dealer before you buy the watch. And most importantly, if a deal sounds to good to be true, that’s because it is. If you do buy from a private party and are unsure if you can validate the watch yourself there are 3rd party companies with experts that can validate your watch for a reasonable fee. The AD’s are not a reliable source anymore. It’s hit or miss to whether they have an expert watchmaker on the premises anymore. I generally know much more than my AD lol
Great advice, as always! Yes I imagine you'll need a caseback removal tool as your in the biz. Good to know that Chinese copies don't bother trying to replicate the movement. At least there is some reassurance that our watches are real. As you say, the fake ones are getting better

I have a really good knockoff. I think all the points covered have been addressed on my Seamaster pro. With the exception of. Externally my watch, no serial #, and open back, well that's easy.

i don't know how you can tell from that horrible blurry video of the watches. i have a replica and genuine planet ocean, they are so close that you would not be able to tell the difference from a video as blurry as the one here.

@@LewisMa So, the video is great. Enjoyed watching it. I actually collect watches. Got interested recently in replicas, so I ordered 3 of different levels to compare.
Now, the standards have gone up, I can tell you that. Copies like the one you are showing here can be found on Ali for around 80$. Those are very easy to spot. You just turn it over and see the case.
A level up is where everything is copied exactly, even the case, and even the movement is decorated correctly. If the movement is of different type, there is a fake layer or plate, whatever you want ro call it, which mimics the real movement look 100%.
And the third level is 1:1 clone. As I said I got all three kinds. The clone is scary identical. Omega's 8400 is completely copied. Apparently, there is a Chinese clone copy A8400 caliber.
I was looking at videos on YT where ppl say you can see under a magnifier if the quality of hands finish or the movement is good enough. That didn't really apply for this one. The dial is perfect. Found some things on the movement though, a very small scratch and spotted a difference in finishing. Again, I'm not a replica expert. I engraved "replica" on the back of that Spectre, so it doesn't get mixed with real stuff in collection. For now I keep it on my desk. Thinking about testing it in the sea, but feeling sorry for 400$ :D
PS: The cheap 70-110$ replicas usually use 2813 Chinese movement.
Above that, you have to pay more. With Miyota, it's 150$ etc.
7750 Valjoux clones are more.
