As an American living in CH for years, my wife took my Rolex sub (that I have owned for 24 years) to the local Rolex certified shop (Bucherer) for a service. The lady at the shop told my wife that they would not service the watch because it was a fake. She had the original purchase papers and the lady still insisted it was fake. The store manager was called in to examine the watch and verify that it is genuine and that they would be happy to ship it to Rolex for the full service. The service cost me $1100.
Lesson learned. These fakes are looking pretty good considering the "official" treatment one receives when owning a real one. It was really an embarrassing experience for my wife...the store was not empty and the lady at Bucherer made her feel unwelcome with that statement.

In 2021, Rolex produced (estimated) 1.05m watches and generated revenues of $8.8 BILLION USD which is $8400 per time piece. So even genuine Swiss watches are NOT about rarity but more what the "market can bear". When shops say they are out-of-stock it's just a way to get your contact details to sell you one WHEN (not if) the watch arrives. Most likely I'll purchase a Tudor this year but the one I want is not made anymore... but to think an AP royal Oak is $50,000 I think I may as well get a Pagani Design "royal oak" for 1% of the cost & give away the 99% to charity or buy a nice Seiko or SeaGull.

You and I will agree IP rights are to be respected. We can have an appreciation for the ability to replicate all we want, but stealing IP, R&D, and all the time, money, and labor that went into designing and creating something that captivates so many is clearly wrong.
That said, I feel that very reality reinforces those prices. At $5,200 for this watch in particular, you are not only paying for a mass produced, albeit quality watch. You are also covering the costs of R&D and, quite honestly, the entire legacy that led to that watch. Without Omega, in this case, that $500 very accurate copy, would not exist. The connection it has to James Bond would not exist. It would cost $500 because no one would pay more for it (feature for feature).
Ignoring for the moment that in a capitalist society, there should always be room for products at every price point, the simple reality is, that when you buy something that is extremely coveted... enough to warrant such a close copy to be made... you are are not only paying for a fine quality piece, but also paying for the very arduous road that made that piece even possible.

@@dxdxdxdxdxd7125 Dont be silly, if they can make it to such a standard, they definitely fully understand how watches at these level are made, and designing a new movement is not hard, its just not worth it if you couldn't sell it for a shit ton of money. Making a high quality replica of a famous brand allow the investor to turn manufacturing capacity into profit with a very predictable income stream and low overhead, they only need to make a convincing copy of the real thing at a price point that is affordable to a lot of people, and they know customer will come.
There are Chinese watch brands that are trying to make something out of themselves and design and make original watches, but its very hard work, and it mostly fall on marketing and brand building. In China, their strongest skillset are in science and engineering, to take something, reverse engineering it and then create a great copy of it is just easy for them.
I would argue that all those famous brand are POS at their price point, as clearly if a replica at 15-20 times cheaper can get so close to it. Also don't be naive, if watch making is difficult, do you think that it would be cheap to get skilled labour thats pretty much on par with Omega in this case? As for servicing, why do you need an official dealer to service it? A watch is no different than any device, it can be serviced by someone who knows what they are doing. All my Porsche and BMWs have never serviced at the dealer because I have a trusted shop that deals with BMW and Porsche at a more reasonable price point. You sound like a snob.
I have many fake high end watches and I have enjoyed them, I really just like their look and nothing else, as I see them as inferior time keeping POS, my $200 Bulova (this one is real lol) precisionist has a margin of error of 8sec PER YEAR, so any mechanical watches can go fxxk off pretending to be a watch that keeps good time in the 21st century.
For all the fake high end watches I bought and enjoyed, I invested the difference into the stock and crypto over the years and I have made 7 figures gain. I can't thank my cheap stake ass enough for that lol.

the part about cars and fake watches sounds true tho, what can i say, keep lying to yourself, misaligned markers, crooked numbers on a dial, imperfections, dirt under the crystal and so on and so forth, the fake is a fake, if designing a movement is so simple why the fakes are made without the original movement copied, but instead a cheap mass-produced one is placed there or a sloppy replica wannabe? And that is why the watchmakers have a problem with servicing it - they often don't know where the hell parts are coming from, because its not a familiar movement of the watch fake one is trying to copy, also Porshe and BMW shop needs to be certified, otherwise you are losing your manufacturer warranty, and from your words i suspect you have 10+ years young cars, so you don't have it anyway, and you can't compare a car service to a watch service as latter requires much less of it and of a different kind

Recently I bought a Galaxy watch and I love the convenience and functionality of it, and I love how black and sleek it looks in sleep mode. The thing only costed me 200 bucks! That's the starting price of a proper watch and you get something so much more useful! I love it.
Getting a fake watch is kinda sad. Why would you? To be a poser? I don't get it. It only tells the time. A 200 dollar watch does the same thing. It doesn't have to be an Omega or a Rolex... there are some really nice affordable watches in the 200 - 500 dollar range, mechanical ones even. These replica consumers are not a loss for Rolex or Omega since they were not in line to be a customer anyways. As much as the fakes are impressive in reproducing the materials let's sit and watch those people produce an original design of their own. How desirable do you think their watches would be then?

@Marcquise White I agree that the same could be offered for less, but there is a lot that goes into delivering what Omega promises. A decorated in-house movement with a silicon hairspring that reaches an accuracy of 0/+5 sec is worth something. I agree, that the name Omega adds value as well, but in the video they discussed a replica at 1/10th the price. An unbranded watch that could actually preform as well as the authentic Omega would still fetch substantially more than the knock-off.

Yep. Let's face facts. The average guy buying one of these watches isn't going to be deep-sea diving with it, nor have a need for an ultra-precise chronometer. He wants something with a good brand name that looks quality and impressive on his wrist. If a fake can be 98% convincing, that's more than enough to rationalize spending $400 instead of $4,000.
Of course if money is no object than the real one is a no-brainer. And there is of course much to be said about knowing that you own something with that kind of history and engineering behind it. But many people, when faced with the actual choice of spending their own money, will not be able to justify that kind of money when something this good is available as an alternative.

Most people don't care about wine nor champagne, if you open a really nice bottle, make sure you open it with people that can appreciate it and that fine connoisseur. But there is a massive difference between a $20, $50 and $250 bottle

    I own 2 watches, a 1973 Rolex DJ ( my birth year) and a 2006 Seamaster.
The Rolex was a Christmas present from my wife and the Seamaster was a reward to myself for sticking to a 4 year goal. Worn the Seamaster practically every day for 16 years. Some years back had to replace the bracelet which cost almost $2k. I paid about $4k for the whole watch!
Recently I noticed a beautiful looking watch on my friend’s wrist.
I commented on it and he gave it to me to try.
It was a Seamaster Planet Ocean 007. Expecting an even heavier watch than mine, I was shocked as it was lighter.
Still I admired this handsome watch on my wrist and was stoked when my friend said it’s yours.
For the following 3 hours I stared at it on the plane but something just didn’t seem right.
Not only was it lighter in weight the lume wasn’t as bright as my old Seamaster and the edges of the bezel felt sharp.
I’m convinced it’s a fake, although a terrific looking one. Still I haven’t worn it since as it just doesn’t feel right.
Begs the question do you buy for yourself or to impress others?
