We all hear that music in our heads when we see this guy. Or maybe we hear that sound of his bow being pulled back as he aims at Boromir...Lurtz is definitely one of the big bad guys on the tabletop Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game along the journey to Mordor! Here I show you how to paint up the leader of the scouting Uruk-Hai(one version of him anyway!) in a nice quick simple scheme, while still getting a great result worthy of Saruman. Primers:
Chaos Black
Grey Seer (zenithal)
Adding a light spray of Grey Seer over a full coat of black primer adds a small amount of texture to the primer which gives the contrast paint more to grip on to. It also adds light and shadows which helps define the model more.

Keep up the MESBG mondays. I'm a big fan of these old models, even if the sculpts can't compare to miniatures these days. With the legendary legion "Lurtz scouts" you can have a very thematic warband on the battlefield.

I think painting older minis is a great practice since a lot depends on how you deal with all the soft edges and your decisions on where one detail ends and another begins. The one mini I have learnt the most from so far was a metal Cadian, so much depended on me painting the edges since there were no nice modern ones. Same with the face, the weren't a lot of detail so it was all up to me to make it look good. After that I became much much better at edge highlighting and painting faces and I intend on making it a habit of twice a year paint up an older sculpt and really test myself since a lot is up to the painter :)
That's a great way of doing it-learning to put in the details on older models will definitely advance your painting! I don't always have time to put in to older models and making them look as good as newer ones, but it's a great idea to practice with!
I'm loving Middle Earth Mondays! I've got this model in my collection. Just haven't gotten around to painting him. Now I'm gonna have to. Yeah, these may not be the best sculpts but I still love them. Keep it coming dude!

What do you mean about it being potato sculpts? I understand that you think the sculpts are of low quality but are they literally molded in potatoes? I know this is a way to make miniatures but i doubt thats how GW did it...
Haha yeah I just mean they’re not great detail wise compared to new plastic ones! They’re not actually made in potatoes, just a description of quality!
Never heard the term 'potato miniature' before - is it a slang term for an older miniature? Nice job on this guy though!
Haha it’s more to do with the detail(or lack of!) on the older models, like they might as well be sculpted from potatoes 😂 thanks man!
@@MediocreHobbies Gotcha on the spuds.🥔 Not sure I agree in that for mine, despite the age of the sculpts, I think they hold up pretty well detail-wise 😁. Maybe that's just nostalgia on my part, but I do like the Perry brothers' work. I think I remember in an Old White Dwarf they did some WWI sculpting for some of the museums in NZ; I saw some when I was there just before COVID times. Very much museum quality work.
