Yes! Uruk Hai scouts are a video I've been waiting for. Getting the skin tone right is really tricky, its easy for them to look almost cartoonishly red whilst the movie Uruks are actually quite dark, and the various leathers is also a difficult look to pull off balancing between grittiness and making the model not too dark.
haha all good things come to those who wait :) Glad that you liked it, yes i agree - i think it's easy to go really red, or just really dark overall. But you have seen enough of my videos where i try to do things a smidge differently!
I think the ragged look to the cloth will help them seem a bit more gritty, even if the colours are a touch brighter than the GW dark brown look :)
One way to get smooth and varied skin tones in any color is to learn to use oil paints. I was hestitant for years but oils are superior when it comes to skin and cloth. Finding a nice variation for a group of Urukai Hai becomes a fun project instead of a chore.
Once you learn how it works it is also very forgiving if you need to wipe away mistakes and you can add paint but stippling and than smooth it out.
The downside is still the cleaning process and some people dislike the smell of oil paints.
These speedpaint videos are freaking awesome. Keep it up. Love using these paints and it's great with that pre-shade.
Thanks very much! I do enjoy using them, and it's nice to see they are getting a warm reception on the channel, hopefully the videos can help a broader audience with a few different methods and styles to get minis painted up :):)
Your videos have always been excellent in terms of communicating techniques and colour choices, but it's great to see you adding in more and more of your sense of humour too!
Thanks very much Twinkle, glad to see that i come across as someone that knows what they are doing haha
I think as i do more videos i enjoy it even more, and i want to add extra bits when i can just on the off chance i can make someone smirk at my quirky ways! haha
I really enjoy how well edited these are - Quick but informative! I was just thinking how much I'd love to see a video on Moria goblin/cave troll video and it turns out they already exist! I'm properly happy :)
Glad that you like the video and i hope that you enjoy the two Moria videos! I've been painting up Goblins where i can this year as my main project :):)
I have been looking forward to this! More LOTR models please!
:) Glad I could be of service, don't worry there is PLENTY more to do - i will have content for years - and i've not even started on the scenery side of things yet! :):)
Another solid tutorial. You have become my go to for MESBG ideas!
Wehey! Thank you very much :) 'At your service' as Balin would say :)
The Scale75 paints are my favourites by far! And that paints combined with your stunning tutorial are a good manner to finish an entire Isengard army.
Yes, i have definitely enjoyed using them, and cant wait to try them out on other minis (iv'e only got the skin set from them) What's the rest of the range like?
@@SwordsandBrushes I tried the NMM gold set and looks perfect! And so do the green, brown and red sets. Right now, the majority of the paints I use are from Scale75, and some others are from Vallejo : )
The 3rd method is awesome! And the hand mark is nice and clean!
Thank you :) I found that the videos are more useful when there are a few methods to watch, at least it makes in more interesting - i hope! haha
Christmas is saved ^^ hahaha planned to paint up a nice Uruk-hai warband for a friend. Now my motivation is back
I love Christmas! I have already found the radio station in the car to play haha
I hope the Uruk Hai come out awesome for you and your friend loves them :)
your speedpainting techniques are inspiring, thx for the vid
Thank you kindly :) Im glad that i can help in some way, hope you enjoy painting with them for your projects :)
Seriously I love how well and good you use the speed paints.
Thank you kindly, i think i just played around with them when i first had them to see what could be done - i've not tried to really push the boat out and do a few hours on a mini - i think it could be done - but at that point you may as well just use normal acrylic paints.
But i still like to tinker here and there to see what can be done - i will try and do some more airbrushing with them soon as they do go through it pretty well! :):)
@@SwordsandBrushes like other tutorials use them and that's it but you glaze with them, wet blend by using their reactivation. Like seriously the best youtuber to really use them in all sorts of ways
Amazing stuff as always mate!
Tar very much!! My Uruk hai force is a decent size now for the time being - Im going to have to save the pennies and get Amon Hen at some point! :P
I cam from Reddit, your isenguard army looks sick
Good day from Reddit! Ah thanks, they are slowly getting more and more minis when i get the chance to paint. I need to get an Amon Hen at some point! :)
Great video again, bubba. AP shades might be the best product they make. I'm a AP Purple Tone devotee!
I don't think there is a project that i have not used a shade paint on, maybe when i do the invisible ring bearers one day! But then i may shade some rocks on the base just out of principal!
Some great looking skin tones there!
Thank you :) I just like to play with the paint sometimes and see what happens :):)
Absolut Showcase Artist ๐ณ .. Great video!!
Thank you very much!! Glad that you liked it :):)
I have to admit. I love all three techniques. My Scout box just arrived so will be using the last two. Tho will try my contrast paints for one of the models. I really appreciate your painting videos tho man! Thanks ๐
Thank you ever so much for watching :) I hope that you have fun painting them, will you be doing some games with them also - such as the Ambush at Amon Hen?
@@SwordsandBrushes I really enjoy watching your channel! The weird thing is, Iโve been painting on and off for about 20 years and havenโt jumped into the game yet. My son and I are actually going to build a table for our LOTR miniatures. I have quite a few sets including the new Battle of Osgiliath setโฆwhich I believe is going to be our starting theme.
Awesome ๐๐ป๐ฅฐ
Thank you! Cheers!
I love your channel!
Whoop thank you, glad to have you here :):)
Love ur vids. Hope for more!!!!!
Thank you kindly! They are always fun to put together and im glad that they can be of help to people out there, any content that you would like to see? :)
@@SwordsandBrushes thank you! I would like to see how you do a galadhrim ๐
YES!!! Love it
Really like the second one!
Thank you :) Yeh me too - it doesn't feel like too much extra effort in order to get some raggedy highlighting going on - and when there are a fair few together it looks nice as a horde :) I just need to get Amon Hen at some point now! :):)
@@SwordsandBrushes would be awesome!
Fantastic video as always. Are you going to review the new Vallejo xpress colors when they come out? Iโd be really interested to hear your opinion on them and see how you incorporate them into your techniques!
And thank you kindly for watching :) Thats a good shout, I will reach out to them and see if they could help by sending some and then I can have a good old play to see what they are all about :):)
One for the idea's list maybe, and keeping with the skin theme, maybe different types of Orc skin? Some (e.g. Gothmog, snaga) are quite pale, some (e.g. Sharku) are more tanned, some green (e.g. Goblins though you've done those), and others almost reddish (e.g. Grishnakh). I remember one in particular from ROTK being reminiscent of Star War's Darth Maul! Also, giving orcs different skin tones can be a good way to break up an orc horde where you are likely to have multiple models in the same pose.
agree having a few different skin tones would be great especially for a horde of orcs!
I do have a video idea for our greenskin friends out there which is certainly on the list of "to do's" plus i found some hunter orcs today in the cabinet so thats a bonus!
AND luckily, there will be a pretty cool looking Gothmog mini coming out soon which is screaming out for a video to be made :):)
I love your videos โค๏ธ
Thank you very much for the kind words! Any particular favourite so far? :)
I have used seprate brushes for metallics for years. I dipped the tip of the handle in some gold or silver paint so they are easily identifiable as metallic brushes.
Clever idea!!! :):)
@@SwordsandBrushes Yup, the brushes for metallics are always separated from the others nowadays. Both the sable ones for acryllics and the synthectics for oils.
Love your videos. I'm not into LOTRSBG but still I like them!
I really like that you use army painter too (also scale.75 is good!)
You should do an AP review --> really interested in the skin tone set!
Paint a 40k Ork?
Thank you very much :):) I think the nice thing with mini painting is that a lot of the methods and colours used are pretty universal - it just so happens that i paint about 90% Lord of the Rings for myself and commissions hahah
I have a couple video ideas for the skin tones set which i will be planing out soon, as the paints really do intrigue me and i think it will allow me to paint in a slightly different approach to what i have done for years - so im looking forward to using them more.
I had a think about it and i think for the time being i will do LOTR and fantasy on this channel for sure, as well as scenery later on - perhaps to 40K too or i might do a separate channel with all things Sc Fi - i will see how it goes.
BUT i do have some Shadespire Orcs to paint up so they are pretty much 40K orcs but without Sluggas right? haha
Well damn, these look epic!
I'm super keen to repaint my old Uruk-Hai in your 1st speedpaint style, but I'd have to keep it simple, so only trouble is I don't know what to do for the skin.
Is there a way to paint the skin more like your 2nd model here but in say 2 steps with speedpaint?
I've pre-order the Speedpaint Mega Set 2 and so excited to smash through all my grey LOTR models!
I try! :) The second method was a few layers built up so you could replicate this with speedpaints somewhat, but it would be a case of getting a test model and trying it.
Id guess something like crusader skin mixed with a touch of Slaughter red as a base and then work a couple darker shades from there to see if you can do a quick method.
Alternatively you could apply something like a Fur Brown paint and then use speedpaint afterwards to get the red tones in.
The mega set looks great doesn't it! Lots of new colours to try out :):)
I don't have either i just like to watch painting
Well you have come to the right place for that :):)
Stunning as always man. Where do you buy the fan made mag I always miss it xD
Thanks as always :) The link for the mags is: sbgmagazine.wixsite.com/mysite
The chaps that make it have also a downloadable PDF of the first few on there too should you wish to dip your toe in :):)
@@SwordsandBrushes Thanks man I had the first few from a few years back but I could never find the newer ones. Cheerrs ๐
Great video ! I really enjoyed the second version of Uruk Hai , can you just explain how you did the prime ?
Was it chaos black spray + rhinox hide spray ?
Will this prime also work with a metallic one ( lurtz ) ?
Thanks for the help
Thank you kindly, glad that you enjoyed the video :)
For the priming you don't need to spray it Black then Rhinox, just go straight for Rhinox, that way it's just one less layer to do before you start painting - especially if you are using a spray can.
But sometimes its good to have that black first - for example metal miniatures, where its not always the easiest to get into all the nooks and crannies. That way you always have a dark area of black which would naturally be some sort of shadow :)
For my normal Uruk Hai which are more like 80% metal armour - i just prime them with Gun Metal (Leadbelcher) and go from there :)
Hope that helps! :)
Yeah
Great painting video. Thanks. Just to clarify: When using Army Painter Speedpaints you use water to make more of a glaze and the Speedpaint medium to make a lighter version, right ?
Thank you kindly! Switch that around - the water will make it more translucent and turn it into a great wash/shade paint. But for glazes i would go with the Medium route as you will still have a decent amount of pigment from the paint in there to control it better - so glazing should be easier to work with :)
Hi! I wish I had this before I started on my own Uruk-Hai scouts, 12 done and I can already see how I can improve them! Though I'm opting for a different style, mainly with a green tabard/coat and bronze armour, and I was wondering what you'd use for that please? (I've only ever used GW paints, but Army Painter seems inviting! Especially with the ability to squeeze them out)
Ah that sounds like a pretty cool combination! What kind of greens are you thinking?
GW paints are good too, the paint itself is great, just not a fan of the pots for me, Army painter i find is pretty good also, squeezy bottles i find are brilliant as you can control the amount the comes out pretty well (great for minimising wastage)
@@SwordsandBrushes Well initially I was going for a death world green -> Elysian green layer -> Ogryn Camo drybrush -> Krieg Khaki edges, but I wanted to improve on it since I struggle to get it smooth, and I think the AP paints would help me with measuring the paints better.
I'm hoping to pick some up tomorrow perhaps, so I'd love to get an idea for the list of paints I'll need, which is primarily for: Bronze armour, the reddish skin, the green upper layer, the remaining leather armour/tassles and also some wood for say the bows and arrows of my Uruks.
Those are the eyes of an Uruk who has seen Eru and laughed.
He's got a kind face :)
@@SwordsandBrushes ๐
What would you recommend when you want to replicate something similar or a reasonable level when it comes to GW paints with their flesh tones? I canโt seem to find the right guide for me but Iโd love to see your perspective!
Without the GW paints in front of me to give a good close match, i would say something like Barak-Nar Burgundy, Bloodreaver Flesh, Bugmans Glow but that is just me looking at the GW website at the colours - they always seem a bit different on screen.
Hope that helps a bit! :)
@@SwordsandBrushes Just my luck those are the paints I got the last time I went out so Iโll experiment with them thanks :D
I go repeat your opรฉration with thรฉ speedpaint for m'y uruks. But i go paint thรฉ skin in grey because IS for mรขke a proxy Mordor uruk hai
Excellent, i hope that you are enjoying the project - and i like the grey skin idea for your Mordor uruk hai :)
Would it have a big different if I base the miniature with white spray instead of black ?
A bit, the colours afterwards would just end up being a bit brighter - and you may find that you would spend extra time layering up colours to your desired effect :) But still totally doable!
What is the best way to go about re-painting a model? I want to buy a set second-hand and half of them are already painted. Is it safe to just spray over or is there a way to remove existing paint without damaging the plastic?
If the paint isn't too thick and the details are still there - then i just paint over it :) but if you need to remove some paint then in the past i have used 'Isopropyl alcohol' and a toothbrush (not my own) and that has worked well enough for me.
If its on metal miniatures then some acetone based nail polish remover has done the trick, i just leave the models in it overnight - but don't do this on resin or plastic miniatures - it will go blobby and horrid! :)
@@SwordsandBrushes Cheers mate, much appreciated! Love your channel btw
if u mix contrast medium to speedpaints they dont reactivate
Oh it's totally better than water, but i still manage to get a bit of reactivation with the Medium - but i am more than happy with that as i can get layers built up nicely that way :) Super versatile paints i think! :)
@@SwordsandBrushes Same here. I got a little bit on that troll I tried to do with mainly Speedpaints. It wasn't really an issue once I understood what was going on, though.
@@SwordsandBrushes are u talking about speedpaint medium or contrast medium. one of the big painting channels began using contrast medium with speed paints(not contrast paint) and it stopped the reactivating
oh sorry i get your comment now, i was using the Speed Paint Medium from the set, not contrast paint medium - i don't own any contrast paints from GW - but if that works perfectly well then that s certainly a bonus :)
@@SwordsandBrushes yeah,JuanHidalgo Miniatures did the experiment
For me it is not comprehensible, why Speedpainting is such a big issue in Miniaturepainting. Ok, when you have to paint an entire army it can be an issue, but is there anyone out there who stops time for this? My miniatures are done when I am proud of it. Sometimes it takes several days, cus during the process of painting I go blind and the project looks undone. On the other day it matured and luckily went complete, if you know what I mean. There is no need to speedpaintโฆ
I think it's just another great tool/method that you can have in your painting arsenal - Theres so many methods these days such as dry brushing, airbrushing, using oils - it can be a bit overwhelming with what to do/try - especially if you are coming into this hobby.
But the nice thing is that we are all in it together and whatever time we have or skills, money to buy what ever brand - it's just nice to paint minis and also play and have fun with others in our fine hobby :)
Glad to hear that you are getting things finished off, whats the latest from your paint desk? :)
@@SwordsandBrushes the last mini was Gimli from the LOTR - Journey through Middleearth- Game. Next will be Atarin or Elenor. We will see ;)
Painting them is a pain in the ass, they are so small.
Once you get going - you will hopefully just get used to it - and then when you paint anything bigger it will seem really easy! :):)
