  • This is the story of why Games Workshop; the creators of Warhammer 40k, Age of Sigmar and The Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game tried to track me down after I brought alternative miniatures for my Lord of the Rings MESBG army Battle Reports!

Weather you want to use proxy miniatures instead of Games Workshops official product really depends on your own personal preferences and circumstances. Using unofficial miniature may stop you going to official Warhammer 40k Tournaments. Or some models may vary in quality compared to the official GW products, though if you find a good alternative miniature company that offers a cheap Warhammer alternative, they can often work out considerably cheaper without sacrificing quality. I personally think we can create an even better MESBG army with Victrix miniatures compared to using the outdated metal miniatures from the Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game miniatures range. I was blown away by the different weapon options Victrix Viking Miniatures offers compared to GW. I do hope Games Workshop updates these miniatures soon so I can slowly fill in my collection when I have the money to do so. But ultimately, the decision to buy proxy miniatures is a personal one that should be based on your individual circumstances and priorities.

Imo, you should never feel bad for buying from other brands. A competitive market is required for a fair market. Imagine how much gw would charge if they were the only company making minis. Plus, it feels good to support smaller mini companies, and it's great to see diverse minis on the playing field

Games Workshop have become disconnected from table top gamers. Their prices have turned away a vast number of potential players that have become interested through video games and even the upcoming 40k movie might create interest in a wider market. Then they see the price to make a basic game sized army and walk away or find an alternative game that is far less expensive. Games Workshop has a bar habit of being elitists only desiring a player base with vast sums of disposable income, that group of people has grown smaller and smaller with the cost of living and recessions. Hell they've screwed over and permanently alienated hundreds of players that worked in their stores and assembly lines when they fired almost the entirety of the US branch and most of their store staff. Many of them didn't need to work for Games Workshop because they had done well in the tech industry or whatever. The former VP from when I played back in uh well a long time ago was wealthy he didn't need to work at all but because he loved the games he helped run the American branch. They threw all of them out on their asses with little to no explanation creating life long grudges with a large number of the player base some the former employees and also their Friends who had come to their local store and played with friends who were suddenly gone. It was a mess and I still hold a pretty serious hate for the company for screwing over a lot of my friends.

I noped out of GW a decade ago and went totally historical, and the price points you are describing are just normal in that realm. People ask "How can you play all these different systems and time periods", and the answer is that when it's not a "walled garden" nobody cares where you buy your figures from, and they are cheap and cheerful. The value you get from the Victrix, Perry, Warlord, Gripping Beast, Fireforge etc plastics is wonderful. More than once I've essentially accidently started new armies by picking up random sprues/boxes at swap meets, which works just fine for smaller skirmish games like Saga. Right now I am finishing off Wars of the Roses stuff for "Never mind the billhooks", and that project started off by randomly buying a couple of boxes of Perry plastics 2nd hand (unbuilt) at a convention. The rulebook cost more than the army.

I am not really a GW buyer (it got me into the hobbie in the 2000s but now i use warlord games)..but the price as u found out is insane . I can see a time when gw will simply price themselves out..due to 3d printing or kit bashing.
I am trying to put together a gondor army (I am doing it as a pallet cleanser as I have done a roman,celt/galish/dacia army, and Macedonian is under production)..but the price for gw figures is very off putting. (Example I got 27 models (gondor ones and metal ones for 50euro, for 24 of the plastic ones it work's out to nearly 3 euro a model , the 3 metal ones 12.50 4 euro per one.
Compare this to warlord (victrix models are also good but I've never brought them but they are good value too). Before brexit I could get 20 roman models for 20 euro.
Like i said earlier GW are going to price themselves out of a market if they dont offer some choice in poses and value for money. If I could get into 3d printing I would gladly use it

Victrix models are quickly becoming one of my favorites! I'm just starting a Norman army for Lion Rampant 2nd Ed., and their Black Friday deals got me a huge amount of minis for reasonable amount of money. Including cavalry, command options, auxiliaries and 60+ rank&file models with almost too many options.
I'm basically building an army and a half (11 units at 45pts total), allowing me to field a variety of units - and warfare approaches - right off the bat.

Small third party companies do.

Years ago went into an indy but in those days essentially GW products shop and when i said i played Imperial Romans and Dark Ages i think the persons eyes almost glazed over..now a friend said went to local GW and was talking Napoleanics..plus i think lots of ppl do stuff like WW2 Bolt Action in 28mm. Games Workshop mini prices vary from expensive to ridiculous, when they can even be bothered to stock them. And Forgeworld's prices are even worse. And frankly the "special" figures that you need - the heroes and leaders - don't cost much more to cast, but they have the nerve to charge multiples of the already crazy high cost per figure for those hero figures. Games Workshop is not your friend, it's more like your dealer. Predatory prices and poor stocking is two good reasons to bail on them, so join the crowd.

MESBG isn't really meant for large armies. It's a skirmish game intended for each side to have around 20 to 30 models at most. Right now a battle company of Uruk-Hai, which contains 20 models costs about $50 USD. Or you could buy the Isengard Battlehost for $90 and that gives you 48 models including the heroes you'll need.
So for $90, you have a complete army for MESBG. That's actually pretty cheap for a mini wargame, especially when compared to how much you have to spend to get a complete army for GW's other games that require a lot more models at much higher prices.

Good video. The route I would DEF have gone down had I been doing a full Dunlending army. I only use them as a small contingent in an Isengard army though (to the extent that I didn't actually want 60 infantry) so bought the GW offerings. The only problem I found with the Victrix set is that there's no archer option (even though the archers are pretty garbage in MESBG, esp compared to Uruk bows). If I wanted Dunledning Horse I'd def go for the Victrix option. I still probably should have bought the Victrix set though as it would give me the option for the Wildmen. Where other figures are concerned (Morgul Stalkers, Black Numenoreans and Morgul Knight Dismounts etc) I have zero guilt about using STLs given GW can't be bothered to stock them. It's like "Don't use anybody else's stuff, just be content with the stuff that we used to stock". I'm sure there's someone in GW bleating "I told you we shouldn't have gone for the Viking vibe, we can't TM Vikings".

The reason a lot of players have a problem with proxies is because it breaks immersion. A lot of players play because they like the setting of a particular game and want to feel like they are actually in that setting when playing. So if you show up with models that aren't from that setting, it breaks immersion and kinda ruins the experience for the other player.

Between the stupid cost of models (especially generic HQ ones) that also don't included enough special guns to kit them the way I want (honestly don't let me take 3 of a specific option and only include 1 in the pack, I'm not buying 3 kits to make a single unit) and terrain it has definitely saved me more money than that initial cost of the printer. I've recently been purchasing figures from Front Rank, too, and have just finished painting up some Dutch Dragoons (van Eppinger's Rgt.), from The Irish Wars of 1689 to 1691: 3x mounted Dragoons + an Officer, and 4x dismounted + a Sergeant. They are wonderful sculpts, that required very little prep work, and have been a real joy to paint, with exquisite detail. Next up, on the paining station are 8x Jacobite Musketeers + Sergeant (Eustace's Rgt. of Foote). I'm building up troops for both sides of that conflict and hoping to solo game, using the Donnybrook skirmish rules/scenarios that are produced by League of Augsburg 🎨🖌👌👍😊

Victrix covers most of the human factions in MESBG, but what about the nonhuman or lesser known human forces?
Wargames Atlantic-Amazing Hobbit infantry, as well as Goths and DA Irish for more human barbarian types
Oathmark-Fantastic dwarves, elves, goblins, and deadmen of dunharrow proxies, often in varying grades of armor (light, medium, heavy)
Gripping Beast-Dark ages arab infantry and cavalry would make great warriors of Harad
Fireforge Games-Moors and Black Guard for more Harad characters, as well as 13th century crusader types
Perry Miniatures 100 Years war and War of the Roses ranges make lovely Minas Tirith and Gondorian knight proxies.
Frostgrave- Useful for all human factions. Been thinking of making some Nazgul from the cultist set.
And these are just the cheaper than GW multipart plastic options, not mentioning many metal 28mm manufacturers like Wargames Foundry, Crusader, Footsore, and Warlord Games metals, which are still around 1.5 quid cheaper than GW per figure.

As an ex-commission painter, I would often do projects that match GW with the job of making them look as much like GW stuff as possible. Wasn't hard. Sometimes the hardest part was making a better model look as crap as GW's. Even when I had a bit of time to do my own projects, I often mixed GW model sets to make unique armies. My Slaanesh look like sexy elves, not crabs. I had an enitre female Dark Eldar force using only the female Dark Eldar pieces and mixing them with Witch Elves. It's not hard to mix and match other company's pieces into the make-up as well. They can't complain about an original GW body supporting non-GW pieces. The end of the day, if you model things, paint things and use lots of putty/green stuff, they wouldn't even bloody know. And I never let other people touch my models. Looking is done with the eyes - then they really can't get close enough to nit-pick.

Some 300 Bucks for a GW army bought store new is actually pretty cheap.
In reality when you want to start an Army for mesbg you look on eBay and find tons of minis for less than half the sales price.
When you're looking at 40K you spend a minimum of 500 bucks for 2K points, similar with aos.
Mesbg is really cheap in comparison even when bought directly from GW

  • @Commodore22345
    @Commodore22345 Před rokem

When it comes to MESBG, the reason GW gets super aggressive about alternative miniatures is because of the licensing agreement they have with Tolkien Enterprises and New Line Cinema. The licensing agreement that allows GW to produce stuff based on Tolkien's works explicitly states that they will not allow alternative miniatures or conversions to be used with the game. So GW aggressively tries to stop people from using alternative miniatures for MESBG because it could cost them their licensing agreement, and would thus kill the game altogether.
