How I Set Up a Clean Laptop

- How to set up a laptop. Keeping a clean and simple desktop
Formatting/Fresh Install:
- I do the install in offline mode (without internet) so I don't have to log in with a Microsoft account.
- I turn off Cortana, history and disable all the Microsoft fluff.
Apps:
- I remove every app I can except for Media Codecs (for video editing)
- Don't remove Cortana, MS Store, or Windows defender with 3rd party apps. That'll break stuff.
- I use Ninite.com to get an installer package. It's clean and free of malware/bloatare
- I don't bother with 3rd party virus Apps. Most of them are awful.
Centering Taskbar:
- I turn off the search bar, Cortana and the task view buttons.
- When you center the app icons, keep in mind that open apps will add to the tail end of it.
Rainmeter: (rainmeter.net)
- The skin I use is Mond. And I use my own font with it.
- The ones with heavy animations tend to use a ton of resources. Avoid those if you need to keep it light.

After I turned off all of them except 3 useful ones, Chrome was so damn fast.

Yes but the "need for it" is greatly diminished to the point I'd say its no longer necessary. SSDs removed a lot of the need.

yeah it sure helps A LOT. My laptop has a mechanical hard drive and my PC has an SSD and my laptop feels just as fast as my PC after all the tweaks

I got mine preinstalled in a new pretty-recent laptop. I uninstall it just like other software. Pick the obvious right choices. It isn't hard to remove at all.

I love unboxing a brand new laptop and just blowing away the manufacturer's windows install with a clean one! BIOS update is prob a good idea too! All your tips are on point, only thing(s) that I would say you missed are power settings-->change the the settings for the power button (sleep/full off/hibernate) and change the remaining "on battery" and "plugged in" settings to your liking.
For centering taskbar and making it transparent, taskbarx is the way to go. Doesnt impact performance, opens at startup, automatically adjusts your taskbar so that its always centered no matter how many apps are open
I center my taskbar as well, but I've always used Taskbar X. Rainmeter for the day of the week, GPU and CPU usage widgets, both very minimal and a super clean wallpaper to go with it. Never liked icons on the desktop, and like Dave said, if I need something, I will know where they are.

@@azizinanc yep. The new windows 🪟 version centers it, but the transparency is still not as good, it's more glassy than transparent. I still use taskbar x for just that.

does using rainmeter for simple stuff like this increase lags and slow down a laptop? especially while gaming and stuff (yes i use a laptop for games, yes im broke)
@@saachikanchan6276 ive got a gaming laptop too, nothing wrong with that haha. and no it does not slow it down, i have stopped using rainmeter now (I want the desktop so clean i dont want anything on any of my screens) and just use wallpaper engine, but there were no performance issues with any of the widgets, ever. Maybe if you like having a stack of widgets, it might affect your fps a bit but if its just weather stuff, or SSD, or CPU GPU temp, it doesnt really affect performance.

Love this. Turns out I was on the right track back in the days when I was a windows user, Same steps.. format, Nanite, disable unneeded services. I turned into Linux user about 12 years ago to save all these hassles but I still do these for my friends and families.

@@dy7296 To be fair, all operating systems are moving in the same direction. It's just like with fashion trends. You either make the trend or you follow it. Fighting against it isn't an option if you want to have mainstream appeal.
Microsoft was fighting against the trend with the tile interface for a long time. 10 years ago they sort of started the industrial design in software trend (I.e. Metro UI was the first UI with flat icons and such). This was then copied by Google and Apple. But Google and Apple softened the UI with rounded corners and some light shadow and glass effects. Microsoft should have followed this instead of insisting on their thing.
Long story short; in my opinion this isn't copying from anyone in particular. All designers embrace existing trends and build on them.
@@prathamreddy5566 Mac isn't over simplified, its just better than Windows. Been Windows user for 2 decades and finally jumped ship to Apple with Macbook air M1 and its way better experience. There's always a learning curve with new OS, but in MacOS most things just make sense right out of the gate while on Windows you have to memorize all the BS nonsense cause nothing really makes sense there. Just the menus are a mess when you start thinking it from non Windows users' perspective... Linux does it lot better as well than Windows. The downside of Linux is poor commercial software support and hardware just isn't as well optimized for it as for Windows... While Mac easily beats both in both regards. The reason why other operating systems are copying MacOS is simply because MacOS UI is the best. That's why many Linux distros are copying MacOS UI as well...

Ninite is a lifesaver, I distro hop, try insider builds, switch between Old OSes and ninite helps me install my basic package for all my appsss
Nice to see your process is the same as mine! One thing I would add is that Autoruns is also extremely useful in checking/choosing what is running on startup and slowing down a laptop
