    Great video and also love your color grading. Is it necessary to use a HSS strobe, since it's power reduces to about one third any way in HSS mode. Isn't it better to just use ND filters + lower power strobe and save some money? Thanks again!

    I used to work in a portrait studio back in the film days and we used the string trick in order to speed up our process when photographing senior portraits. Most subjects don't want to sit there while the photographer is messing around with trying to get exposure right. By using a string on the key light, we could pose a subject, adjust the light and make exposures much faster than we could have had we had to check exposure every time we moved the light from one side to the other. Don't knock the simple things.

    Sorry if the question sounds dumb, but when Jay P says f8, does he mean aperture of the lens? If so, does he mean that if I want f2 on my lens for instance, I will need to dial the flash power back by 4 stops?

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  Před 2 lety

      Yes, that is exactly what I mean. You power your strobe up or down to give you the correct exposure for the aperture you have chosen.

      @@TheSlantedLens what would be the standard factor is it a certain brightness which is a standard then being less light for higher aperture thus needing brighter flash to compensate. Basically meaning if u match all apertures with the meter then 1.2 will be same brightness as 8 then correct?

  • @chuckdevlin6143
    @chuckdevlin6143 Před 3 lety

    these three techniques obviously work. However, I use a different method which I am used to. First determine which aperture setting I want to use for the specific effect. Then expose for the background with that aperture and ISO of 100. Determine if I need HSS or not. Underexpose the background about 1 stop so subject can stand out better with the appropriate blurry background. Now use TTL for initial exposure for subject (used as a light meter), then change strobe to manual mode for more precise strobe(s) setting(s). Take several shots to obtain the desired exposure and shoot away.

  • @urbankixxfilming3451
    @urbankixxfilming3451 Před 3 lety

    great video , but i do have a question is it safe to say that f8 is a safe standard for outside daylight shooting or just go with what you want ?

    • @jeffereyjimenez6439
      @jeffereyjimenez6439 Před 3 lety

      Go with what you creatively want and do it with intention. If you open up to say f/1.4,1.8, or 2.8, then watch your sync speed. If your strobe supports high-speed sync then you are all good. If not, you will have to shoot it at apertures like f/8, 11,16, and sometimes even 22. As with all things in photography, it depends on what you are trying to accomplish. The best advice is to practice, know your strobes and equipment, take some test shots, make some quick adjustments, and you are ready to roll.

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  Před 3 lety +1

      Definitely choose your aperture for the amount of depth of field that you want for creative reasons. You might be interested in this video about aperture: czcams.com/video/WSjPrSk9yOQ/video.html

    My strobes don't seem to measure in F stops, but 1/32, 1/16 etc. I don't understand how to measure this and am struggling!

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  Před rokem

      Strobes create light output. You can dial that output up or down to increase or decrease it. Dialing it up one stop means you double it. Dialing it down one stop means you cut it in half. Strobes don't give you an f-stop. They give you an amount of light. That may be f/8 6 feet away from your subject or f/5.6 12 feet away from your subject. That same amount of light will be brighter or darker depending on how far away or close it is to your subject. So you need to use a light meter to measure what that f-stop will be.

    From an aesthetic standpoint don't use direct strobe in sunlight. Looks cheap. Best to wrap it into a bounce for a natural look.
    There is plenty of light. If anything cut the hard light with a 1 stop silk and fill the weak side with a bounce.

  • @omegaman1409

    I am on the camp that using a hand meter in the field is atrocious. Nobody does that. It worst with the string. I saw a guy use it. It was a joke. The model even laughed.

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  Před rokem

      The reason I gave 3 options is because if I don't someone will say, "Why didn't you show a handheld meter?" So perhaps it is best to find the information that suits your situation best.
