    Splitting this into a couple parts, let me know what you like to use to record drums!

    Very useful video. I usually record with my Roland TD-12 electric kit but I do wanna set up live drums at the new place I'm moving to and this video gave me some good insight on mic placement for live drums.

    My son’s kit is ridiculous: 6 Tom’s (4 rack, two floor), snare, two kicks, two hats, and a large array of cymbals. I’ve been experimenting with various ways to capture it and get good sounds in our garage (where else?) jam space. Too much fun, but a couple of things I’ve settled on: Kelly Shu drum mic hangers with dynamic kick mics on the beater inside the kicks, plus a PZM in each. Massive kick sound blended together and a very clean appearance outside. The PZM captures all that resonance of the shell giving all that pillowy vibe and phat bottoms, while the beater mics capture the punch. They sit beautifully in-phase. Straight up, a great kick sound doing bugger-all else, although I usually carve away a bit of prominence in the lower mids, and hi-pass the beater mics to taste when blending. No eq boost needed anywhere.

    Dang, those drums sound good! I'm excited to hear the isolated mics in the next vid. I've found mic placement to be absolutely critical in my stupidly small and boxy room. Getting creative with overheads has helped a lot with getting a good, even sound. Hoping to have the new studio built by the end of August, beginning of September. As always, thanks for sharing your process!

  • @johntomanio3374

    Even though you can't hear the air conditioner on your raw tracks, chances are your mics are picking up ultra low frequency noise from it. Which, of course, will be amplified by compressors that you use on the drums. It's pretty easy to check this if you put an EQ that has a frequency analyzer after the compressors. I've learned this the hard way...

    cool video man. so i have a d112 so i thought i would try it. you are right it has a lot of mid focus. but i had to put back my SE V-KICK. Have you tried it? the d112 is cool and a classic. but this SE mic inside not only has great attack but also that bottom end thump. almost dont need an outside mic. it blends great with the rooms as well. just thought i would share.

    Ok, so here come the thoughts and questions! What are the "perfect" size drums for recording? "Perfect" wood that the drums are made out of for recording? Cymbals? Types, thickness, sizes that are "perfect" for recording? "Perfect" snare drum for recording...size, material it's made out of, etc. I found the smaller drums and thinner and smaller cymbals to be more "effective" than the larger. Then again, it would depend on the studio, mics, etc.

    Thanks for the video! Are there any phase or other problems with overheads? They have figure 8 pattern and pretty different distance from the ceiling so they should sound a bit different because of the reflected sound.

    • @AndrewMasters
      @AndrewMasters  Před 2 lety +2

      Nah the overheads are my favorite, totally in phase with one another, and with the close mics on the drums.

    Bass drum mic'ing question. I noticed you didn't mic at the sound hole. Is there a plosive that comes from there or just a better sound over all when away from the sound hole? Thanks!

    Thanks! Awesome video as always! 🤘🏻

    • @AndrewMasters
      @AndrewMasters  Před rokem +1

      I send them from channel sends inside of pro tools. The sends output via line outs from my interface.

    • @AndrewMasters

      I have a 16 channel stage box and an 8 channel stage box on opposite sides of the room that run to my patchbay.

    Speaking of heating and cooling, I also live in a hot climate. Is a ceiling fan in a room enough to be a problem for ribbon overheads? My AC is nice and quiet, but I worry about the breeze from the ceiling fan stretching out the ribbons.

    • @johnvcougar
      @johnvcougar Před 2 lety +1

      Fans are a scourge for sound, especially for any mic in its blast radius. I deal with fans a fair bit and the effects on the sound is ... nasty. Ribbons are sensitive and I suspect you'll be switching fans off before takes in the near future! Try it both ways and see how you go.

    • @AndrewMasters
      @AndrewMasters  Před rokem +1

      Kind of depends on the style of the track, but I’m favoring the 47 right now. Using it all the time.

      @@AndrewMasters Yeah i have a sub kick i built and its great for what it is, was just wondering if that 47 would be better. I also have a fet 47 jr I am using too. Just upgrading and added a x8p to the setup too. So 20 channels =) but really you kinda use a lot of the same stuff i gravitate towards so i appreciate the feed back. Hope all is well dude.
