Tell the customer that if they pay for a valve inspection, you’ll throw in an adjustment for free. People love getting something for nothing
I'm a mechanic but of another mechanic told me that I'd think they was being a smartass
Good point
Or just check it all, put it back together and tell them it needs an adjustment. x2 the price🤣
‘The cat is still there and hasn’t been traded for meth’ 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂hilarious comment wizard 😂
That is so last year.
I drive a 2003 Pontiac Vibe (yes I know it's a Matrix, shut up) and I paid $1,400 for it two and a half years ago. No working AC, but otherwise it's great. Only been $600 in basic maintenance and repairs, all I've done myself.
How many miles
I had a chance at a Vibe some years ago and instead bought a PT Cruiser. About the same price. I made a huge mistake!
It's just a Matrix tho...
@@geogmz8277 It is a Corolla wagon, the best of both worlds!
When folks ask me for reliable car recommendations I bring up the Vibe. It was made on the same line and they run forever. Not great fuel mpg but still great cars and can be cheaper than a Matrix usually.
"Get a Honda; not a Hyundai"... Best car advice ever!
yea people always say German cars are designed to explode right when the warranty expires but that really is the case for Kia/Hyundai. I worked there for a month and I saw at least 5-6 cars around 100k with a blown motor or transmission. Whole year at BMW yet to see a ZF trans fail and only engine I've seen blow was a lube techs fault not the engines.
The older Hyundai were pretty good cars around the 2010s is when they took a nose dive
@Fghh108 Korean tires are pretty good along with Vietnam tires
@@robs_garage0278 I Have purchased 3 of the 2010 Sonatas. The first my oldest killed by taking out a deer dead center and locked the motor up. It had about 180k which I put 80k. Currently my second which I paid 1400 is at 268k which I have done about 120k since I got it 4yrs ago. The only issues I had between the 2 is a starter, alternator and batteries, change oil every 5-7k miles using value oil. Bought the 3rd for my youngest daughter as it is a solid engine and know how long it can last. All that being said you are correct that everything after is trash.
My Hyundai and Kia both run without issues. If you take care of it, it will take care of you

Yeah, the Wizard is too much of a gentlemen to make a comment on that. Don't think Mrs W would be too happy if he did.
@@duncan649The sticker was put there for Mrs W.
I am more surprised Mrs. Wizard did not comment on it! They have great banter together!
He aint lying about people just driving junk untill it don't drive. I got a really cheap Eddie Bauer explorer that almost killed me on the way home. Every bushing and ball joint in the front end was completely clapped the tow adjusters were loose brakes completly gone at both ends the oil was chunky the first few changes. About 600$ in parts and a few afternoons cussing the new Mexico heat and ford engineering i trust it just enough to make it the dogs river run car.
What model year? I drive my family's 1996 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition. Sure it is not in peak condition as it used to be used as a work truck, but we only got it for $200. It has somehow survived longer than some of the other used vehicles we had that we paid more for. My family drives a 2018 Ford Explorer XLT for the main vehicle.
@@EthanHyland It was probably taken care of better
we've all been there if we weren't born into wealth but ball joints and brakes are one of the few things you don't mess around with. Even when I could barely afford to put gas in my car I bit the bullet and charged some cheap ball joints on my credit card. One bad pothole with blown ball joints and you could lose a wheel and your life.
@LiljamezZz We got it running better. It sounded a lot rougher when we got it. We got an oil change, a few new parts, and so new tires within a few years of getting it. We eventually need to fix the transmission and 2 of the brakes, but it still runs with the many, many miles that engine has traveled.
A 'tow' adjuster?
Thousands of Honda owners are now scratching their heads and saying, "We have to ADJUST our valves? Is that why my Honda sounds like a diesel?" 😂😂😂
Doesn't matter tbh.
As long as you change oil on time it goes a really long time without shifting noticeably, track your fuel economy if it gets too low especially on a highway test that let's you know it might be time to consider it.
A long time ago a second hand car could be reliable or easy to fix, not any more. I am amazed the Honda still needed to have it's valves adjusted.
I don't send food back at restaurants either. :)

Every Honda I have had in for a valve adjustment had valve clearances that were too small. I've never had to tighten one. It's always crack the 10mm and back off the center screw about 1/2 turn. We pretty much recommend it if the vehicle is at 100k or more. I had one that was so bad, the intake valves weren't closing all the way because of the lack of clearance. Misfiring like mad. Another shop did ignition coils and fuel injectors but firing that parts cannon didn't fix it. Honda 3.5's are the worst for this in my experience.
They always tighten up
The V6 Accords have their issues. The 2.4 motors are better built.
Because of timing belts and valve adjustments, Honda's are a no go for me. Why mess with it when you can get a Toyota and not worry about it.
@@user-yc2oz8kc5kthe 3 & 3.2 V6 are better long-term over a k24.
Definitely not inferior at the very least
Only Honda I ever worked on was a relative's 05 Pilot...did the valve adjustment. Supposedly the dealer said is wasn't necessary, but this car always had a noticeable tick since new. After I was done, the tick was almost gone. I hug my GM's with hydraulic lifters, no adjustment needed...
I'm a 74yo retired Tech of 50+ years, and I owned several cars in my life but my costumers were still driving them. I, like yourself got smart and did like you did. Don't touch someone else's headache because you just unknowingly acquired another car, even if a tail light bulb burns out. It's always "it was fine before I brought it here". Some people have NO idea how difficult it is working on Cars for a living. There are so many ways a simple job can blow up in your face and most times it's not your fault. We only drove the car into the shop sometimes. I had an early 80s Civic for a simple oil change. I started the car and put it in reverse. I moved about 6 ft and the left axle broke in half. A fairly common issue on a Honda those days. Contacted the customer and he blew his cork. To make a long story short we replaced the axle for free and didn't break the bank, and told him to never return. We even showed him where the axle was almost rusted through under the rubber vibration dampener and he wouldn't even look at it. I could write a book, and maybe I will. 😁
It's hard to find an honest shop. I once took my Jeep into a local shop to replace the pilot bushing. When I got it back, the steering wheel was crooked, the vehicle pulled to the right. I also noticed thick grease on the inside of the front rims. Long story short, they messed up the alignment, they took a knife and stabbed holes in the CV boots, and they also tried to tell me that it had an antifreeze leak and a power steering leak. All of which was a lie. BEWARE of local shops. I wish The Car Wizard was local to me.
Unf**ken believable !!!!!
I have a independent shop by me with affordable labor rates thank god.
Yeah I am taking my SAAB 9-5 to a shop to get some repairs done since they are the only one around me that can service them. Luckily the service manager has been working on SAAB's for 25 years and he told me he will be doing the work on it. I agree it is hard ti find a good shop nowadays.
Thank you for your advice, I punted my 2007 Mercedes GL 450 last year and replaced it with a 2017 Lexus GX 460. Couldn't be happier.
Mr. Wizard and Mrs. Wizard are incredibly genuine. My 9 year old son and I enjoy every video. Thank you for being original. Can't wait to receive your merch! Excellent work. Please keep it up. Hoovie is awesome too!
Mr. Car Wizard!! Just wanted to say I bought a 2000 Crown Victoria. $1,400, 167,000 miles, ac works, its a little beat up but yeah.

Good video! On my first Honda I replaced seals on the transmission. One was leaking, so I replaced them both. I purchased the seals at the local parts store. A month later they were leaking. These seals were cross referenced by the parts store. I purchased replacements at a Honda dealer and a month later they still weren’t leaking. I returned the seals from the parts store for a refund. I never made this mistake again, this was in 1996. I’ve always bought seals, o rings and the like parts at Honda, lesson learned.
It's interesting that the parts store would take back parts that were INSTALLED (used)!
@@TheOzthewizthey absolutely do. I have had to return several defective new parts over the years. One time I complained so hard that their ATF filter did not fit not only did they refund the price of the aftermarket filter, they also paid for the genuine part I bought at the dealer, plus the cost of the fluid. I was really pissed. It’s not easy to work laying on your back trying to install the part that is made incorrectly! Another time I installed an aftermarket steering pump that did not work. Then installed a genuine part and it was perfect.
@@robhood1167 At 115,000 miles my 2009 Honda Crv power steering pump was making a screech or howl. I bought the “o” ring the dealer suggested and 6 pints of PS fluid. Jacked up the front (wheels off ground) and turned the wheel back and forth, engine off, and bleed out fluid out and put in new at same time (you can find this procedure on U tube). It was the wrong O ring, but I didn’t need it. After this, the noise was gone, I now have 140,000 miles and pump is still good.
@@TheOzthewiz Because the part leaked and the Honda did not.
That model Honda must use screws and lock nuts for the valve adjustment. Older Toyotas required the removal of the camshafts to change shims. In that case, I would imagine there would be an extra charge to make adjustments.
The SAME set-up as on my 1975 Kawasaki Z1. Need to keep an assortment of "shims" in stock, but can "trade in" the ones you took out!
Cannot always afford to fix what goes wrong straight away that's why preventive maintenance when you have the money to do preventive is the best policy
Check the dip stick
Welcome back Jr. Mint. Grimes, I wish you well on your next journey.
During these days, the mechanic work on service advisor sales scams that based upon R&R (remove and replace) when the hoods is opened. I was told by service advisor to replaced the whole suspension and brake rotor when the mechanic round one of the knuckle during tire rotation that cost $1K for parts and labor. It took 10 minutes to brake the round knuckle and replaced it with OEM knuckle and cost $125.00 in other Asian shop!
Just went through the same Prius/CT headgasket job myself. Looks like you went about it a different way compared to how other shops/ dealers do it. Normally the exhaust manifold is bolted off and left in the car, and I'm not sure what that metal chain was in there for?
I would recommend the tech refer to the Toyota service manual because sealant placement and the order in which things are put back together/torqued is extremely important.
DId you notice how short that pathway was for coolant to reach the cylinder ? What, the guy who got fired from Subaru went to Toyota ??
That's better than when I bought a new Super Beetle in 1973 for $2604.00 and the valves need adjustment every 6000 miles.
Volkswagen ALWAYS wanted to "KISS" in the Type 1.
@@TheOzthewizI had a 1970 1500 beetle thay did the valves every service at least thay were correct and saved on valve train wear
Still a very simple engine fortunately. But they have their niggles.
very easy to do valve adjustments on beetles. The covers just have a latch to take them off. Just have to lie on your back to adjust them at home.
@@garrypritchard1658 They probably just checked them because they usually don't need adjusting every oil change. That was a good shop because it takes at least 1/2 hour/maybe 15 minutes if you have two people doing the job even for an experienced mechanics because you have to keep on rotating the camshaft to get the feeler gauge in to check the clearances.
I still prefer Toyota over Honda. I don't have to do timing belt, nor valve adjustment on Toyota. I own both Honda Pilot, Acura MDX Honda fit and on Toytota side Highlander. rav4 Corolla, Sienna. I love Toyotas
Its always more expensive when it finally breaks
I remember Eric the Car Guy said valve adjustment is just cherry on top. It does not resolve on going issues with an engine.

Knowing when to say "No!" is as important a practice for a shop to follow as saying "Yes!". Swearing off fiddling with 2nd hand engines that someone else has modified or repaired recently is a good place to start. If the customer then gives you the go ahead to do whatever is necessary that's a different story. Some people have to learn the hard way. 2nd hand engines are a nightmare.

GREAT WORK WIZARD. ENJOY YOUR DEMONSTRATION AND EXPLANATION OF AUTO REPAIR
An older car that has good looking brake fluid (without new hydraulic parts) is a car that’s been taken care of. That’s an owner who is taking care of business.
New parts are nice though.
Get that egr valve and cooler cleaned/replaced and the intake manifold. These parts need to be removed from the car and cleaned every 100k miles so they don't become clogged up and put pressure on the head gasket.
Single layer head gasket. Same issue that that one generation of Subaru non turbos had.

I really like this channel. You really love to work and save all this cars. I love my work to (not mechanic) and when u love your work, u will do it right.
The Honda engine is kind of a dinosaur and pretty unique among ‘solid lifter’ or ‘valve adjustment required’ engines in that medium is threaded adjusters. On an engine that uses variable thickness shims the procedure (and cost) for checking is very different than that of actually changing the clearance if it’s out of spec. Some variable thickness shim engines require removal of the camshafts to access the shims. So be careful when approaching the situation with your specific car. If the shop takes the valve cover off your Toyota and finds a tight valve the cost might triple.
Love the K series engine, reliable, powerful and with good fuel economy with the bonus of being easy to work and mantain. My K24 on my Civic Si has 128k miles and I am keeping every maintenance up to date and doing preventative stuff as needed before it breaks. Only time it left me stranded the pilot bearing on the clutch failed.
could also be a broken or twisted camshaft. They may have set the timing correctly, but if the camshaft is twisted, you can still get a lean code.
Never heard of a camshaft being twisted. Very interesting.
With hollow cams being a thing that twist is unlikely
Twisted camshaft? 🙄
You can’t neglect the OBD system. It’s not like the old cars before that era.
Unless, it's JUST a loose gas cap!

Snappy slogan: "Get a Honda, not a Hyundai"!
We have two accords with no issue compares to Buick Summerset (I called Sunset) that brought new but plagued with problems and we almost filed a lemon laws suite. We had issue with 3 US made cars that brought news and one used since 1980 and we terminated the love affair with US made car in 1985 with Honda and Toyota plus one Prizm that brought used during my employment depression.
K24's were the worst engine on valve adjustments. They had a very high chance of burning up the exhaust cam lobes if this was not performed. The Exhaust valve clearance would tighten up to the point of doing damage to the face of the cam lobes. However the intake valve tend to loosen up on these motors. Get yours checked every 105K.
In Ireland we jokingly say we love the misery and hardship. But I wouldn’t like big surprise big bills
Most shops don’t even do head gaskets anymore since it’s such a liability shoot hard find shops rebuilding anything they all just want to get new and replace from engine to transmission

These kind of videos are so helpful as a service advisor
Root cause of the CT200h is the EGR system clogging. Runs from cylinder 4 to towards 1. As it clogs, cylinder 1 won’t get any EGR flow, and will run hot/lean. Make sure the intake is updated to the later version while it’s there, and the EGR cooler if possible (it’ll be mostly clogged also). Been though it twice on personal 2010-2015s. Later ones are better. After that they moved the EGR pickup to after the first Cat and it burned up the blow by the created the build up on these engines. Also had the non-fxe versions of these, no issues over 500k. Internal egr on those those.
"MILF Mobile" I freaking love it.
When I saw that sticker, I really started wondering what the owner looked like. I wish we had a picture.
The head from that Lexus looks really rough on the mating surface. Check to see if Toyota has issued any TSBs for that. Been there seen that. Head gasket failures can occur because of that.
I was looking for 3rd generation prius because it has a better look than the 1st and 2nd gen, but after doing a deep research on the 3rd gen and found the egr and head gasket problems decided for a 2nd gen.
Wizard, I saw timing chain, I immediately thought, I have a 7th generation honda accord, with a timing chain. Wasn't expecting to see another little 7th gen on this channel 😂
Also, didn't make sense to me either why the customer would refuse an adjustment, when you also have to use a specified lash tool to check and adjust!
All cars leak alittle after so many miles. Add fluid if you have to, and keep driving. Wait for a serious problem - like a rod knock. Don't pay $2,000 for a new seal.
Some say Toyota timing chains don't wear out from normal wear. You check the colored links to see if the color is there to know if they're still good. If no color, replace, it's probably overheated.

Concerned about any future expensive repairs, I went ahead and got an extended warranty (factory/OEM, not 3rd party/aftermarket) for 5 more years -- covered until April 2029. After that any serious/expensive repairs are on me. Smaller repairs would still be on me (my deductible is $100) but the really larger ones my wallet would find "inconvenient." ;-)

Car Wizard forgot to set his phaser to "LIGHT stun"--no wonder the customer was left stunned more intensely!
Lol The Wizard said Mating surfaces and I knew what he meant 😂
I have a feeling that the MILF with the Mini is very knowledgeable about mating surfaces, too. 😂😂😂
Anyone who asks you to open a car and check something out without expecting a full rebuild is an idiot. I've been that idiot. You gotta know when your motor is totaled and your valves are bent.
