  • Are your brakes spongy and don't know why... In this vlog I show you how to change the brake fluid on your Harley Davidson and a few things to note about brake fluid itself. I'm no mechanic but this video is to show you if I can do it anyone can. It is recommended to change your brake fluid every 1-2 years. I hope by watching this video that you save yourself some money and give it a go yourself. I had a Spongy brake lever and bleeding / changing my brake fluid fixed my problem. ( how to bleed the brakes on a motorcycle )

    Hey Matt! Don't call yourself dumb! You're not dumb! You put out very helpful content! I will have my son help me with my brake fluid change.... that way I know it's done right.... and I won't get dirty! LOL That was really impressive how dirty your fluid was... now with the fresh fluid it looks great! You didn't mention how much better the brakes work now with the fresh brake fluid. I enjoyed watching you do this work on your Fat Bob! Like all your jokes and your fun personality too! Great Job Matt!!! John...

    Great job, I'm an old ex-army apprentice and reckon you nailed the basics and attention to cleanliness was awesome as you don't want to spill that shit on your paintwork, maybe just sit the reservoir cap on the top while bleeding as an extra precaution to stop any potential rogue squirts, but it's an 8 out of 10 for me!

    The only other thing I do when I bleed the brakes is I toss a zip tie on the lever and keep it compressed overnight....this forces any air that may be in the line to the top of the master cylinder. Great job!! this was the one job I thought for sure would go sideways but you knocked it out with zero issues!! You are getting way better!! We need to send you an american toolkit brudda....working on these is so much easier when you have all the correct tools, especiallyHarleys when its all imperial....even the allens are imperial...

    Well done for attempting the job yourself and getting it done! One thing I need to point out is that Delboy's Garage is known for providing misleading and incorrect information regarding motorcycle maintenance. A youtuber called Dirty Garage Guy (Matt) has made a lot of videos about Del and his poor practices so you might want to check that out . I don't blame you at all for following his advice because he's very convincing especially if it's something your not familiar with.
    Also, when changing brake fluid, you don't need to soak the old fluid out with a tissue or cloth and It risks getting fibres in the reservoir. A good way to bleed the brakes by yourself is to use a one way valve on the bleed nipple and just open the bleed nipple with the one way valve connected, pump fluid out until the reservoir is low (but not empty) and fill with the new brake fluid and repeating until you think you've got most of the old fluid out. Close the bleed nipple and disconnect the tube, pump the brakes till firm and then top it up to the right level and put the cap on the reservoir. Test the brakes and you should be good to go. It's better to pump the old fluid out through the system without introducing air into the brake lines because that will take longer to pump out and will definitely make your brakes spongey if you don't get the air out. Also If your ever in doubt try look at the manufacturers service manual. I hope this helps and please do keep trying and having a go👍.

      @Gnarly_Harley  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hey mate, oh wow... sorry about that i didnt know. I did alot of other research aswell before doing the vid to make sure im not going of just one set of information.
      thanks heaps for all the information. That makes sense about the fibres etc. I was also told a syringe works well for the top. But I like the sound of your method better mate thank you.
      I'll definitely keep giving things a crack (saves money haha)

      @@Gnarly_Harley No worries, It's good that you're getting info from lots of sources, I just thought I'd let you know because even I followed Del's method for riveting a chain years ago but realised that it was not right before I did anything. He once made a tutorial to change the coolant when boiling hot and had to take the video down because he was promoting dangerous practices.

    Great job bro, you can gravity bleed the system as well without squeezing the brake lever, you'll need 2 of the little catch bottles one for each of the front bleeders then crack open the bleeders and let gravity do its thing. Just ensure the reservoir is topped up.
    Should be at least one beer for the front and another for the rear.
    Good work mate, get yourself a set of pipe spanners, makes it alot easier and you won't damage the bleeder nipple....
    Cheers bro

    Well done Matt, another great job. Soon there will be very little that you cannot handle, l used to spend the money l saved on workshop labour to buy tools and now l have everything from bearing pullers for wheel bearing change to a good tension. I bought a mid range which goes to 150 ft.lbs. Don't be like some people and buy one for inch pounds as well just remember, like there is 12 inches to the ft.lb there is 12 inch pounds to 1 ft.lb. So if the tension required for a small nut or bolt is 60 inch pound you simply divide by 12 I.e. 60÷12 =5 ft.lb. easy peasy. Look forward to seeing what's next, Cheers Andrew.

    Nice one. I push the fluid in from the caliper, someone needs to be up top sucking it out with. Syringe so it didn’t overflow. Doing it from the bottom means you don’t have to bleed brakes as any air is pushed up to the caliper and released to atmosphere.

    Hey Matt purchase yourself a vacuum bleeder kit to suck old fluid from master cylinder rather than use rags or paper towel once you have removed old fluid top back up as you were doing then attach vacuum bleeder hose to bleeder nipple at calliper create at vacuum then open bleed nipple using ring spanner of correct size
    There is no need to touch lever to try and pump fluid as it will be drawn through the system by created vacuum you must keep a watchful eye on fluid level in resavior
    This method is quick and clean
