Where did you get common sense?
I thought you changed synthetic oil every 5k miles, conventional was every 3k?

We've been changing oil on our Camry every 3,000 miles ever since we bought it new back in 1999. It has over 305,000 miles and it's still going strong! Regular maintenance is the key to a long life!
How about transmission?
300 5,000 mi might seem like a lot but it's not a lot to a car that's been taking care of
Goals
@@eddievenuto1862 yes it is

How come they don't teach this stuff in high school.

They do (at least at my old high school). It's called "auto repair" class (or something similar). But it's usually not a required course. It's typically an elective (optional). I took it (many years ago), but I never got in the habit of changing my own oil. But it's not as difficult as you think. Just don't forget to miss a step. Otherwise, you're likely buying a new car or you're going to be EXTREMELY embarrassed and humiliated - maybe even in legal trouble, depending on your local or state laws.
Because high school only teaches stuff that will never be applied in our lives.
Change your oil people. My 2001 Corolla has almost 300,000 miles on it. Never missed an oil change in 14 years and it still runs.
Stop lying
I swear on my life, I'm not. Granted, it's only driven about 15 miles each day but, it WILL reach 300k. I've never went past maybe a couple hundred miles over the oil change recommendation. It's only a few minutes out of your day that will save you thousands.
rockabillylaker You must have driven it a lot. I have a 2002 Camry with 134K miles
Yep. For the first 7 or 8 years of the car, I was driving a lot. For a while, I was putting about 100 miles on it a day.

I got into an argument at my highschool i am in 10th grade i was arguing with like 10 other kids they were saying you should change your oil every 100,000 miles, Im worried about my generation
+Jim Pierce If they try to wait until 100K, they'll be lucky if it makes it to 50K. That's not even oil at that point, it's sludge that used to be oil.

i know right.
+Sean Roose Hey, don't blame him!
Yeah, tell them good luck with that, their engines will all be shot at 30k (if that) and they'll wonder what happened. Morons. 3-4,000 is normal. I go no more than 4,000 between changes because while the oil is better than it was in the old days, the filters really aren't, and I don't want the shit in a dirty oil filter getting back in my engine.
That's so true . An oil change is relatively cheap a new engine not so much.
Those Camry's are good cars. It's sad to see one that has been subjected to that kind of abuse and neglect.
Can confirm, driving one now. 199k miles and drives like 60k.
They can really take some abuse too. I wonder how long this guy went with that oil..
It could be the original.
Guy? It was probably a black lady, at least from my experience....
Yes, Camrys are fantastic cars!
Meh its another ugly boring Camry..
"Oil is the life blood of an engine" is all I needed to hear to change it religiously.
Hello Scotty,
Thanks a lot for your highly informative videos. Last year, I didn't have that much knowledge about automobiles and engines, and then I started the journey in the interesting hobby of digging under the hood. I managed to get the service manual for my Honda Jazz. And I spend hours watching your videos. The small problems those used to cost me a fortune sending the car to the dealer's workshop now cost me almost nothing.
Greetings from Jordan.

I had a 95 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1 for 11 years that I gave up last year because of frame rot and other issues. Ever since I bought the car back in 03 I've changed the oil every 3 months or 3000mi with mainly Castrol GTX 5W30. I let my car idle a lot and didn't drive it as much so the 3 month rule happened more often than you'd think. Even after almost 20 years and at 180k miles the engine still ran smooth and had a lot of power...just everything around it saw better days. It never burned oil or ran rough. Its such an cheap and easy way to keep your engine going. It'll never make sense to me why some people don't do it as often as they should.
It does take a lot to kill a Toyota, or a Honda, especially the older ones... RIP Camry.
Jay Santos
cool i got a 99 VW jetta 170 000 miles n it runs perfect with a smooth engine sound. even the transmission works great
chupamishuevos303 i think Jay meant if you abuse it for 180k miles (assuming the owner of the Camry didn't take care of it for 180k miles), a German car probably will break sooner.
ha yeah true true
Old Honda's burn oil so if you don't check it and drive it hard it's not that difficult to kill it.
Doesn't matter what you drive if the owners an idiot the car is doomed.
s0nnyburnett So very true. Course if you go to one of the cheap lube shops and the idiot there doesn't put oil back in the engine you end up with some slight engine noises as well LOL.
Well howdy neighbor! (Tarant county here) I love your channel! Ran into it by accident while looking for answers to fix a 3rd brake light on a 2007 Scion TC. No luck on that, but running into you, I learned how to properly maintain my vehicle. You keep it simple & clear. Thank you so much!Keep up the excellent work.
We've got a 98 Camry as a beater/grocery getter and since it's a California car, the paint's ruined BUT the interior's really clean, chassis/suspension's great, despite blown rear shocks, it actually still rides quietly and smoothly on the street/freeway. The engine (2.2 4cyl) still pulls strong at 285,5xx miles (never opened, all original) and it's really quiet and silky smooth as well! Some people just don't know how to own a car, because if you take good care of em, they def last. Great channel, by the way! Am a great fan!
Matthew F. Yeah those late 90s Toyota engines are bulletproof as long as you take care of them
I have a 98 camry as well, it’s at 260k still running fine
Apparently Toyota's engines are not all of equal quality. I've owned lexus GS300 2002 (made and assembled in Japan) and even though i change the oil with full synthetic every 3-4k miles or twice a year, I got a crank seal leak @96k miles. Makes me a bit sad, bc then my parents Highlander under similar conditions started a rear main leak at 120k miles. I was thinking Toyota's quality was a step ahead of Nissan, but my sister's Xterra has outlasted both these cars in terms of oil leakage.

Gen 4 is a great camry
Smart man shares another smart tip. "Oil is cheap, but the engine isn't."
Easy to fix only a few hundred to replaced the spun crank bearing. Don't junk a whole engine just for that.
I'm 48 & as a kid my Grand-father, who was a mechanic, made an effort to bring me to his shop after tearing down an engine that never had oil changes. Pointing out the sludge & damaged engine internals & the clogged oil returns. He stressed the importance of frequent oil changes w/a quality oil & filter. To this day, I change my own oil @ 3500 mls & I've never had engine issues. Same goes w/your lawn mower! Change your oil people. It's cheap Insurance! Thx Scotty for this video.
Sir. I've tried many of your tricks and bought many of the recommended products. I must say. You are my trusted mechanic. Thank you.
I found you by chance. And for the life of me I cannot believe you don't have a television show! Even my daughter watches you now for car tips...keep up the great work!
I used to do TV, but really, too much side crap involved. You can't beat the internet, freedom rings here.
I am a ford man myself but i still respect a toyota.
Missfire? That's the LEAST of your worries on that junker!
It's easy to fix just replace the no.1 bearing shell.. Crank bearings typically fail first because the top of conrod is splash lubrication.
Just found this channel last week and I love it
You’re so great man. Your videos help a lot! Thanks for the uploads
Some people just don't get how to look after engines.
Like the woman that owned the car in the video. lol
"...and the engine just started coming apart." LOL!!! That thing is TOAST!
I've seen glue like oil coming out a oil pan drain hole when I was working in a shop. that is a 75000 miles engine oil. what the hell is those people thinking. lol

Where I worked back in the 90’s we had a fleet of old Chevys, & one slow day one of the newer guys decided the fleet was due for an oil change... 5 came out solid... but remained running for another 4 years without any problems. Same with the two 70’s & 83 Chevy truck I owned... like their ad used to say, “Just put gas in & go.” Their bodies had rusted away, or I would have never gotten rid of ‘em. The highest repair bill was $65.
they wasn't thinking, that's the problem
I have 68,000 miles on my car I change it all the time but this last time my engine oil turned it to Jell-O pudding,, Sludge city, More than likely causing rod failure because the car sounds almost like this one. Except I could still run it at idle running with ac on seems to help the engine stay calm... I can even get it up to 50,, As long as I keep the RPM below 2000...You might hear the one knock here and there. But anything above 2000 sounds Similar to this car
Scotty. I know this is an old video, but, what do you think about oil changes by time rather than mileage, or by type of use rather than time? You know several factors are involved when deciding when to replace engine oil. Of course the basic rules are good for most people but since I will love to here a full video just analyzing those factors from your perspective. BTW I love your videos so fun and inforative.
How often you change it also depends on usage. Short trips in cold weather are hard on the oil, especially if you have a carbureted or direct injection engine where fuel dilution is a problem. With long trips in warm weather, the oil will last longer due to decreased blow-by on a per-mile basis.
Extending your oil changes is a good way to save time and money but oil analysis is necessary to confirm that the viscosity and additives are holding up.
Otherwise the safest thing to do is change it more often (according to the manufacturer's directive), which can't hurt anything at any rate.
Hi Scotty. I have a 2006 Scion XB Box Car with 362,000 miles on it. Still runs like new! I had oil sample sent out @316,000 miles and it came back fantastic! They said it would be no problem to go 12,000 miles between oil changes. Which I did anyway. I am a Courier, so I put a lot of miles on a car. I plan on getting over 500,000 miles out of this car. I use Mobil 1, 5W30 full Synthetic. MrRantek24
what a stand out professional. The world has learned from you sir
There are so many variables to take into account when deciding when to change the oil in your car such as: last oil change date/ milage since it was last changed. Oil type (conventional/synthetic), your driving habbits/driving distances, seasonal temperature, oil grade and viscocity ratings, the milage of the engine, the amount of oil capacity, fuel type you use. So it's not a one size fits all, another way of knowing is, how your engine is reacting to your inputs. Everytime you change the oil you will notice your engine should perform quite different then before the oil change. A sign that you need an oil change can also be if your engine is being sluggish.
I use full synthetic oil and still change it every 5,000 miles with new filter. Cheap enough
Arthur Smith always cheaper than fixing or buying a new motor!
stuff will still happen , just did for me,, and i have 68,000 on my car,,, The oil completely broke down within a month turned into jello pudding now my car sounds like this one Synthetic Pennzoil... Never had that problem ever.... Now I’m not even sure were to go to get a engine looked at or replaced , car year is going for around 11,000 still .. mazda 6
@@Pinkielover well, it’s a Mazda sorry to say
Scotty... You are amazing! I learn so much from your channel. Regards from India.
I know changing motor oil is important. Just wanted to see the video for myself. You are a very intelligent man. Thanks for the advice and tips on all your videos. Keep up the great job!
Scotty, great video. What product do you recommend to clean sludge out of a motor that hasn't had frequent oil changes. I've heard of these products that are kerosene and of the like based. But they all claim this and that. I just want to get the real deal. Also, any tips or tricks when doing this?
I've seen several of those Camry 2.2's go well over 250,000 miles to 300,000 miles to even 400,000 miles with no rebuild. They're great engines but not with water as lubricant! lol

sideburns2009. I have a 1995 with 206,000 miles. Still runs good with little maintenance. I only put between 4 to 5000 miles on it a year.
I bought a 2003 Toyota tundra with 344k miles. I have driven it 2,000 miles and it's a beautiful truck to drive. I'm considering keeping it and mainting it to see if it go towards the 500k mark.

I have no doubt that Tundra will hit 500K. I've got a Honda Accord with 225K and she still runs as good as new and idles so quiet you can't tell she's on.
Hey Scotty,
What are your thoughts on mineral vs synthetic oils? If i'm changing the oil regularly, every 3,000 miles, can I just use mineral ?

Great video Scotty on the importance of regular oil changes, the new synthetic engine oil's are really nice, they are a good bang for the buck.
In Australia and have a Z28 Camaro 1999 and don't drive it too much but I do change the oil every 5000 kilometers but have forgotten to change every 6 months. After watching this video I raced out and changed the filter and oil, Thanks Scotty for these videos, after my father (motor mechanic) died I don't have someone to remind me. Now its up to me.
ABSOLUTELY MR SCOTTY IS THE BESTEST THANK YOU FOR TEACHING US ALL TYPE OF DIFFERENT WAYS TO MAINTAIN OUR CARS RUNNING AT THEIR BEST...THANK YOU
It's the stupidest thing not to change the oil. Do it once a year in my moped also. Even an expensive 40 bucks oil change worth a lot less than the lightest engine work. It is moronic to lose an engine from lack of oil.
Must've been quite a talk to the owner that the car is basically fuckin' dead.
Clever man.wished all mechanics were like him.straight to point not like a lot of cowboys I’ve had on my car, great stuff
Hello Scotty,
What kind of oil do you recommend for the winter and how often it should be changed? I live in Finland and during the winter the temperature can get as low as -25 degree celsius for months. And Finland being one of the most expensive Country in the world, oil changing at the mechanic can cost up to 100 bocks.
Takes a lot to kill that Toyota 5sfe engine, that car was ABUSED.
Some mechanics say and dealers that is say you can go a year before changing oil if you don't put much mileage on at all.
yes, that is true with modern cars and modern oils, especially synthetic oil
Thank you Scotty.
Scotty, is there any reason why you need to change out synthetic oil twice a year even if you haven't put 7-10k miles on the car yet? I use synthetic in mine and change it once a year, maybe every 9 months, but I don't put more than 8-10k on it per year. Would it be smart to change it more often? I use Mobil 1 if it matters.
Scott is the god of all mechanics! I love his channel
Scotty. Love your videos. So what if you only drive 3k miles a year. I choose synthetic that supposedly lasts 5k, but am I exceeding any time limit on how long oil is good in the engine? Car has 67k miles on it for an `08. Thanks
I would in your case at least change that once a year.
Question Scotty. I was changing my Ford's oil (4.6L 32v). My manual says it takes 6 quarts. I drained all the oil and put in 4.4 quarts. Neighbor came over and we were talking, so I forgot to put in the last quart. I then started it up and ran it for no more than few minutes and shut if off. I then noticed one quart of oil still in the box. Any damage to the engine running it at 1.6 quarts low????
no, not that short time
no damage at all. you would def have enough oil pressure and checking ur dipstick the oil would probably show halfway on the safe area
Love this channel!!!
Great video Scotty, what you think about oil vacuum pump to change the oil sucking it from the dip stick vs. lifting the car, unscrewing the oil screw.
before it's too late!
It already is
Funny how i read that exactly at the moment he said that
i use synthetic oil and still change around every 3k miles lol. like they say oil is cheaper than an engine
also my cousin said her car was shaking and couldn't figure out why, i looked and her front passenger tire had 1 lugnut on it....
very smart guy!! your videos help alot !!
Hi Scotty, luv your channel and thanks for all the great advice. Quick question: It's been colder than normal where I live, it's normally in the low 40's this time of year. But the last three weeks it's been in the teens and single digits. I went to drive my car last week and noticed the transmission was going into gear. I checked the transmission oil and it was very low, and I also noticed some oil on the ground.
Any advice on the cause/cost before I bring it to the shop?
generally the drive shaft seals on the inside leak, or the front main seal of the transmission. Costs vary widely depending on leak area and model of car.
That's how you make a diesel of a petrol engine.
Even Diesel doesn't sound that rough lol. They fucked that engine.
I know a guy who never changes his engine oil ever. His shop changed it for him on his van when the filter rotted through and it was pouring out. He's yet to have an engine blow up because he keeps them for three to four years and trades in. I wouldn't want to buy that car.
@kiyonexus You have sub 85 IQ then.
Man Scotty, its February and you are driving the bike in a t-shirt. Youré a mechanic made of steel, my friend ;-)
this is Texas, it aint so cold here.
Much agreed with you Scotty I'm an industrial maintenance mechanic. Hydraulics 101 first thing you learn is that it doesn't matter how fancy your oil if you don't have a filtration system designed to filter out particles down to a few microns and or water as well you will destroy things if you follow the advertised oil lifespan as your oil change. To make a happy medium they sell oil test kits like you have talked about in other videos to send in $20 a piece to determine when the particulate count and oil life reaches a point requiring change. Old school automotive did that when they determined every 3000 miles. Same with tranny fluid you talked about in another of your videos 20,000 miles I think you said. This is how you keep cars trucks and machinery running properly. By following the recommendations of the expert not the salesman
Great video. Even if the oil doesn't break down in 3 thousand miles, it has been contaminated with moisture and carbon. Especially if used mostly for short trips.
@ryancraig7826 Good point! I daily drive an '05 sentra with 270k mi., And it only holds 2.5qts of oil. But everyone I know thinks I'm crazy for changing the oil every 3k mi. The previous owner used to have the oil changed every 7k😳😳😳😳 It's a miracle it hasn't developed any sludge, or formed any leaks. I flushed the oiling system with ATF, and ran 2 cans of seafoam with the new oil & after the flush. I ran that oil & filter for 1k, and did it a 2nd time. I also did multiple transmission drain & fills driving 100 mi. in between. Now it runs like a clock! I'm glad my father made me responsible for changing the oil & filter on all the family's cars years before I started driving. I've owned nothing but old japanese cars with high mileage, but I've never had any problems with them b/c I stayed on top of the fluid change intervals. Cheap insurance indeed
I change my oil every 5k miles on my Saab 9-3 turbo. I use synthetic Mobil 1 0w-40. Not only is it important for my motor but for my turbo As well
Scotty I love your show!! Can you do an episode on your motorcycle?
Thanks scotty very informative info
Hey Scotty, I love your videos; they're very informative. I would just like to say that changing oil every 5-8 thousand miles is virtually unheard of here in Europe. We have many, many cars that achieve 200-300 thousand miles on 12 or 18,000 mile oil changes. Cars which do low miles/short runs definitely need more frequent oil changes but our changes are normally done at least yearly or on miles whichever comes first. My Volvo need 6.5 litres of fully synthetic oil at £10 a litre every 12,000 or yearly ......that's about $100 an oil change - you wouldn't want to change that 2-3 times a year! Are the European oil grades superior? I'd value your opinion! Best Regards from Lincoln, England.
Volvo in North America specifies 5 to 7k Mile oil changes. Oil in the USA typically costs $4 to $10USD per quart. And when you buy larger 5qt bottles. You can get deals as little as $20 from a retail chain. I changed a friends Volvo with synthetic oil and the total costs about $38 bucks. The German made oil filter for his car costs about $13. Plus, we typically have warmer weather which degrades oil faster. So it only costs about 22 pounds per oil change.
900Yugo Thanks for the info'....as always we get ripped off and pay through the nose here in England! Luckily, I do my own servicing as a typical annual service is £300-400 !
In the USA, 300 pounds goes a long way in maintenance. that is like 5 years worth of oil changes or more! lol
I change the Oil on my Camaro myself and I pay 23 Euros For 5 Liters 5W30 and 4-8 Euros for the Filter. I live in germany.
it makes me sad hearing that engine! i hav the same car a 1998 Camry le 4 cylinder and it has 245,000 miles on it and it runs great! i put Royal Purple oil in it, and it runs great!! i hope i get another 50,00,-100,000 more miles out of that car!
That gen camry is pretty bulletproof, take care of it and im sure youll make it to 300000. I know a guy with a late 90s avalon and it has 330000 on it and still runs, plus its been horribly neglected and abused for the past 5 years
Scotty, Porsche on their interval say 20,000 miles or 2 years on the V8... Love to hear your thoughts as I've just got a 80k mile Cayenne and changed the oil right away for Mobil 1 which is what it had from each service.
I have that exact same scan tool. The Actron CP9680. But nowadays I keep it in the glove box in my truck in the event I encounter a person with car trouble so if they have an illuminated MIL, I can at least pull up the trouble codes for them. I also have a Snapon Solus Pro that stays at home most of the time though.
The cure is easy. 5,000 intervals regardless of the oil. Cost is non issue these days with $22, 5qt. Full Synthetic Jugs at Wal mart. Full synthetic for the mower for that money, geez.
you know all about oil prices nerd
I agree. Deal of the century and the #1 favor you can do your car. Especially my Mercedes which takes 8 quarts of the stuff!
Or once a year, maximum year and a half.I change mine once a year and 5-6 months since I own two cars and don't drive much, probably like 2k miles at most, and it's ok if you push it to year and a half under normal conditions.
I'm embarrassed to admit that I once neglected my oil change and went 20,000 km between oil changes. That's 12,500 miles. That was a few years ago and I'm still driving the same car no issues. No knock, tick, spark plugs are clean, it was synthetic oil but nevertheless. I've been diligent changing the oil myself since, every 7,000 k or so, but I've got to think I did lasting damage. We'll see how long it lasts
Hey Scotty, love your channel. I've been watching for 3 or 4 years. What should I do with an engine that didn't have the oil changed for about 30,000 miles? It's a 2002 F150 V6. The engine was replaced with a used engine that had about 100,000 miles on it. I have the receipts from when it was done so I'm pretty sure it's all good info. It seems to run well aside from some vacuum leaks. I want to do what I can to help the situation & squeeze about 50,000 miles out of it.
Oil is cheap! Blown motor-Expensive!!!
The choice is yours: you can pay me now or - cha-ching! - pay me later.
I see a sign at an oil change shop saying it's cheaper to change your oil than your engine.
Actually easy to replace the bearing shells.. you just need to make sure the crank journal isn't out of round. Don't junk a good car just because one bearing shell is scored.
People that damage their engines by not getting the oil changed or running it low on oil piss me off enough that I'll actually make fun of them for it....I find it offensive. It's the epitome of laziness, and someone that can't even take care of the oil on their car doesn't deserve to own one.
I’ve watched a lot of this guys videos and I’ve learned more than any other videos on here haha perfect 5 or less minute videos straight to the point not
I have 4 cars (some are older and used by my children) and recently learned to DIY oil change. Best skill ever to have and can use the good oil and do it more often then once a year.
Similar thing happened to my friends wifes car when she forgot about the oil, just not as bad. They still drive it daily. But when we ride in that thing it sounds more like a super charged lawn mower than car.
How did you get sponsored by Adidas?
Hi Scotty, your video is very helpful. Learned many things how to maintain vehicle. On change oils, my Honda BRV has low mileage..about 3000 kms per year only. Do I need to change oil until it reaches 5000 kms or do it once a year?
Scotty you are a fountain of knowledge. Reely like your videos
Thanks for the support!
I can't stop laughing because if that sound.... Don't know why lol
owner wasn't laughing. But I did find the sound amusing too, since it wasn't my car.
Scotty Kilmer
Other than sheer ignorance, why would an owner risk so much by not changing the oil? very inexpensive compared to what happens when you don't.
Scotty Kilmer It isn't everyday that you see a broken Toyota.
pedrof830 Or at least check it and refill it. I was always taught that oil will naturally wear down, leak out, burn off, or whatnot - and even refilling it with fresh (so that even if it was 50% old oil and 50% new) is better than running it on half-crap-oil!
Some massive knocking going on
best mechanic ever UwU
thats so sad. if im not mistaken thats the 5sfe engine, also found in the 90's celica. such a fun little 4 banger when coupled with a 5speed manual. really a shame to see it get neglected like this. its getting pretty hard to find 5sfe replacement parts in good condition nowadays.
Subscribed, 18 and I enjoy learning about this stuff; keep it up.
Thanks for the support
The w In oil stands for winter, not weight
If most engine wear occurs when you stop and start your car.... why are a lot of car makers making your engine automatically shut off at stop signs and red lights and then automatically start back up when you press the accelerator pedal? Isn't this greatly wearing out your engine?
not really, it's the cold starts that wear the engine

Hey Scotty. I'm new to your channel so I don't know if you've covered this or not, but would you recommend using a flushing product to help remove old nasty oil from the engine before adding fresh oil? If you would recommend doing this, which product would you use? Thank you much.
only if engine is full of sludge, then I use K and W engine flush in a can
Thank you, you are a big star!
This is why newer cars have idiot gauges to let you know when the oil needs changing. There's people out there that just literally goes through cars destroying their engines from not changing their oil. Heck, i want my cars to last forever, it's common sense.. change your oil every 3 months or every 3,000 miles.
Or I use the synthetic and i don't care about the extra cost when i don't use all the mileage, i just prefer to keep my car running for life and changing it twice a year. Except, i got rust issues on my car. Eventually i might try to fix that myself but i need a garage to do it in. Otherwise i might end up spending $2,000 on having someone do it for me.
every 5,000 miles is fine.....and I rotate my tires the same time.
Motor City Man it depends on the car. If your driving habits allow you to drive 5k on every oil change then great. Typically the change oil light comes on every 10 months for me. I can extend it to 8 months on an oil change but i just do it every summer and winter because it's easier for me.
Again, W is for winter and temperature. not "weight"
I really let my first car down the other day, I wish I knew about all this information earlier. Does anybody know where I can get a good start on learning?
scotty, i love yr shows
Hi Scotty, if I don't drive much, say 3000 miles a year. Must I still change twice a year? And why does time frame matter for oil change?
once a year is fine then
Scotty Kilmer. Scotty should I run my engine for 5 minutes before changing it ? or can I drop the oil cold in the morning ? ...
It doesn't really matter, it's going to be sitting in the pan anyway.
Giovani22 It's a good idea to run the engine for a few minutes before changing it. It will put any settled particulates into suspension and let you drain them out. The oil will also flow faster.
Moo Tik Pin Thanks for asking that question! That was the same question I have been trying to find an answer for on many you tube videos. I also don't drive my vehicles much, so that was my doubt. How often should I do my oil change? Great Scotty replied to you, now I now once a year is fine.
It's cheap insurance, personally I change my oil between 3000-5000 miles. Why take the risk with an expensive machine like an engine. I don't buy the manufacturers claims of 10,000 mile plus oil change intervals. Their money isn't on the line, yours is. 😉
You don´t have to believe anything.. That is what oil analysis are for, 35 bucks can tell you a lot of the condition of the engine and for how long you can push the oil intervals.
Personally I can go 10K between oil changes using Mobil 1 EP that was Lab Tested and passed with flying colors. Lab Results said the Oil could go even further (Mobil 1 EP is Guaranteed for 15K) so Mobil knows what its saying.
Also that 10K interval is being done in a 215K Car..
You also pay out the nose for Mobil 1.
@HermannTheGreat Have you been looking in Autozone, Advance Auto Parts or O'Reilly? It's usually more expensive there than at Walmart; they carry it at $22.47 or so for 5 quarts the last time I looked, it lasts longer too so I'm not seeing how you mean all this. Now, if you were going to say "My engine leaks with Synthetic even if I use the High Mileage kind" I'd agree that it's best to use Conventional.
tis all true about prices, oil at "discount" auto parts store is one of their big marked up profit items. I personally use sams most of the time, even cheaper than wally world.
oil is cheaper then another engine !
How I can learn how to exactly torque different nuts in my car for different foot/pound? I have a torque wrench but where do I find the information for my specific car model? I don't seem to find it on the car's manual. Thank you!!!
Hey Scotty, my 2002 Hyundai Accent recommends 5w to 10w oil, though for whatever reason I wound up using some 40w. No problems so far, and the engine doesn't seem to burn oil as much. But I'm just curious, would the extra thickness be bad for her engine? Maybe more and longer dry running or something like that?
Why use something different when 5w or 10w is recommended? You might blow some seals as the engine has to work harder to push the oil round as the viscosity is higher. Modern cars all use lighter oils for a good reason
I have "bollocked" someone not so long ago saying he now only services his car every 2 years to save money - told him it's a false economy and he'll end up paying a lot more in the long run.
People continually argue (and end up with petty, ignorant, xenophobic, name calling as in a comment thread below) about how often is best to change your oil - changing it every 3k miles and/or 6 months is probably a belt and braces a thing that may well help the engine last longer (more so if you expect to see over 200k miles from it), I mean, it certainly won't hurt. It also really depends upon the engine and your location - if you have a Ford with the 1.6l Citroen turbo diesel engine for example, definitely change it at 5k miles at the most, otherwise it will kill the turbo, then the subsequent replacements. People in very hot or humid/damp areas, or those who do high miles (perhaps hammering along a motorway/highway) will benefit from more frequent changes.
I have an old Ford manual published in 1969, and that does say every 5k miles or 6 months - Scotty is an "old school" mechanic, so this advice is definitely valid for older cars. One of the reasons for doing every 6 months was to change to oils better suited to winter or summer use, but this is a fairly mute point these days with better multi-grade oils. In normal/average circumstances, changing within the manufacturer's recommendations with a decent oil should see the engine to the end of the car's overall life.
But anyway, for peace of mind feel free to change your oil more often if you want.
Personally, I would say no longer than a year or every 6k miles - whichever comes first. Unless you have something older, say 1990 or earlier, for example, then more often.
I agree, an oil and filter change even a couple times a year is a heck of a lot cheaper than an engine regardless of the vehicle.
I agree, however, highway miles are easy miles (less shifting, idling), you can go longer on oil if you mainly drive highway miles. But yes, following the manufacture's recommendations in the owner's manual is the key.
***** I agree, towing, and stop and go driving are what really deteriorates the oil fast as well as cold starts.
***** Yeah, that's true - the only thing I would say is that here in the UK it's not uncommon for people to drive at 90mph or even a little higher on motorways, and there are parts of the autobahn in Germany that are unrestricted - someone doing these higher speeds on a regular basis may need more regular changes.
It's just down to the individual's driving style, their car/engine and so on, really.
I've not had it done myself, so I don't know how much it costs, but I guess someone could have their oil analysed a couple of times to see how often they need to change their oil.
mrman17 I totally agree with your statement. My car manual recommends every 10,000 miles or 1 year, what ever is soonest. I drive a Hyundai i10. I don't do 10,000 miles a year so it gets serviced every January. I've had it from new. I had an oil analasys done and it cost me £60. My car is just over 5 years old and is *nearly* at 50,000 miles. Runs as sweet, if not better, than when I first got it.
Maybe as it gets older I'll change it myself between services, but for now, once a year is good for me!
Oh and an interesting fact. OUr work Sprinters had their first service, at 32,000 miles!
