      He said he went 10K which is fine according to the service manual on both the 2.7L and 3.5L as long as you use a quality synthetic (which i'm pretty sure today you have to go LOOKING for to find a non synethic 0W20)
      Still I flush the oil every 5k and filter every 10k. Mines mostly highway miles anyways (about 3 out of every 50 mi stop and go), and I usually just cruise @ 65 to save gas also.

    • @c.d.7742
      @c.d.7742 Před 3 lety +3

      If Scotty was in there on his back then there would be adequate room if it slipped off the jack. However I note that he was on his shoulder which means he was sideways, and I don't think that if it slipped off the jack there would be enough room that his shoulders wouldn't get crushed.
      I don't like to screw around under vehicles without making sure there are stands under the axles to prevent getting crushed. I know of a friend of a friend who was under his car without a jack stand and it slipped off the jack. When his wife found him he was dead, but he most likely suffocated over a period of time with the vehicle on his chest. There was enough room that it didn't crush his rib cage but just trapped in there. If it crushes your ribs and they puncture your lungs, the lungs will fill with blood and you will suffocate that way. Sounds like fun huh?

    Some great advice here Scotty!!! I have 2017 Tacoma and my son has a 2021 Tacoma,both trucks have the 3.5l V-6. I think people really don't understand the importance of regular oil changes on the s trucks (key to long engine life). I tow a small bass boat with my truck and put 15-20k miles a year on my truck. Plus, tow a small boat a few times in the summer. I just purchase the Toyota OEM filter element and drain plug gasket at the local toyota dealer. Then pick-up some quality 0w-20 synthetic oil... Yeah, Toyota says 9-10k oil changes. I do it every 5k just for cheap insurance.

    I had a dodge that I put full synthetic oil in and changed it every 10k. It would need around a quart during the 10k, at about 135k I gave the car to someone I knew who was in a bad time in life. He never changed oil since he got the car for free. That engine survived to 225k. He said it was running fine right up to the time it blew. I wonder how long that engine would have gone if he kept up with 10k oil changes.

    One question for Scotty though... When I've done them in the past with my older cars, I used to fill the filter up at least halfway or in some cases, most of the way, with oil if the filter sits upright when attached to the engine. Someone suggested this as it also ensures there is some oil for the engine to pump around when you first start it up. Is this still necessary? (I haven't done oil changes in the past 10 years since getting new vehicles, since I would just have dealers do it but was wondering if this mattered or not).

      It can't harm anything. Theoretically, any time spent pumping air through bearings etc. can cause wear. However, before draining the old oil, you bring the engine up to running temperature - which means there's still a thin film of oil on all engine components, so there's a basic level of lubrication during the few seconds until pressure builds up with the new oil. Just don't rev it up until the new oil has fully circulated.
