- Chai (Alive) (חי), Eurovision Song Contest 1983; Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle, Munich, West Germany; Saturday, April 23, 1983 - Ofra Haza representing Israel (Second Place, 136 Points) (Dutch version) (Short version).....
While in West Germany preparing for her performance in the Eurovision Song Contest, Ofra and the rest of the Israeli group visited Dachau, the extermination camp of the Nazis. She met there an elderly Jewish couple from Israel who survived the Holocaust.
"Are you Ofra Haza?" asked the husband. "I was a prisoner in this concentration camp and today I came here to visit for the first time since I was freed. We heard your song. On Saturday evening when you sing this song to all of Europe, remember what you see now." Ofra promised to remember.
Ofra and her group also visited the Olympic Village in Munich, where 11 Israeli athletes and coaches were slain during the 1972 Summer Olympics.

Listen, brothers
I'm still alive
And my two eyes are still raised to the light
Many are my thorns,
But also my flowers
And ahead of me are years too numerous to count
I ask
And pray
It's good that hope was not yet lost
A psalm passes from generation to generation
Like a spring from long ago, and on to eternity
I ask
And pray
It's good that hope was not yet lost
Alive, alive, alive
Yes, I'm still alive
This is the song which grandfather
Sang yesterday to father
And today I [sing it]
I'm still alive, alive, alive
The people of Israel live
This is the song which grandfather
Sang yesterday to father
And today I [sing it]!
My days are full of life
And also my nights
And in my sky the pillar of fire still rises
I will sing endlessly
I'll spread out my hands
To my friends across the sea.
I ask
And pray
It's good that hope was not yet lost
Alive, alive, alive
Yes, I'm still alive
This is the song which grandfather
Sang yesterday to father
And today I [sing it]
I'm still alive, alive, alive
The people of Israel live
This is the song which grandfather
Sang yesterday to father
And today I [sing it]!
Listen my brothers,
I'm still alive
And my two eyes are still raised to the light
So here's to life!
To all my guests
And to my children who seek to return
I ask
And pray
It's good that hope was not yet lost
Alive, alive, alive
Yes, I'm still alive
This is the song which grandfather
Sang yesterday to father
And today I [sing it]
I'm still alive, alive, alive
The people of Israel live
This is the song which grandfather
Sang yesterday to father
And today I [sing it]!
Alive alive alive
Alive alive alive
Alive, I'm still alive alive alive!

For me, this to this day is the best Israel has ever sent to Eurovision. A gorgeous singer with a powerful yet angelic voice and stunning stage presence, and a great catchy tune with the most powerful message. Not many around Europe knew at that time what the song symbolized: A young Jewish girl standing on a German stage less than 40 years after the holocaust, singing about her people still being alive. Even the costumes reflected the notorious yellow star. The beauty of it is that instead of being angry and depressing, the song is cheerful and most of all proud. I remember myself a child watching this live, my first ever Eurovision song contest. I wanted her to win so badly! Today I think that 1983 was simply an outstanding ESC year, all top4 songs were winner material and probably some others too. So 2nd place was still a great achievement. RIP beautiful Ofra!
Interesting! Thanks for the info!!!
it is even more powerful message - she was an Israeli Arab!
After Dana International of course.
I know Im kinda randomly asking but do anyone know of a good site to watch newly released movies online?
@Abdullah Gideon I watch on Flixzone. Just google for it =)
Singing "Am Israel Chai" - Means The Israeli nation is still alive - is so emotional, while it was sang on the a german land. This is a legand, and Ofra was an amazing singer. RIP Ofra
Especially in these days. It gives me goosebumps
Also that we're still here, not just Israel. Us as Jews.

"Hi"- not are "chai"
If this song was Israel's pick for the Eurovision 2024, it would have been deemed too political by the EBU. Shame on you Europe. Am Israel Chai
Hilariously, very possibly thanks to the attempts at silencing and the forced rewrites, the Israeli Entry for ESC 2024 is , for my money, the best entry of the year. A song way above the general level of ESC today. so you know..moral victory, and cultural victory goes to ..Israel!Am Yisrael Chai indeed!❤
@@reddragonready I couldn't have put it better myself. Am Yisrael Chai! 💙💙💙
Well, just remember that the public voting got Israel 12 points in many countries this year - the public is obviously much less anti-Israel than the panels and artists.
@@walterjoshuapannbacker1571 Incluso España le dió 12 puntos a pesar de un gobierno comunista y socialista que apoya a Hmas. Ánimo para Israel
It’s outrageous that this song didn’t win
The symbolism of this song is incredibly powerful. Here's a beautiful Jewish woman singing in Hebrew in Germany, a country whose Nazi regime tried, just 40 years prior, to brutally erase the existence of the entire Jewish people and culture from the continent. Yet, here she stands, alive, the back up singers wearing yellow as sign of defiance and pride, not humiliation. Nazi ideology failed, Jewish people and culture persisted and thrived. חי חי חי

Well said, my friend

@mirela dumitrascu Wtf?
@mirela dumitrascu I think you misunderstood my comment. Your statement (although hard to understand) was so incomprehensibly stupid that it is on an entirely lower level. I would imagine that a talking dog could form a more intelligent statement. Perhaps the Neanderthals hadn't gone extinct after all. What an amazing discovery!
@mirela dumitrascu Oh please tell me how you have this amazing knowledge that no one else has. Please, go on. Tell me what exactly you meant because, in all honesty, I barely understood your first comment.
I am nostalgic about the time when each country sang in his language.
I agree they have to bring it back, the mostly english songs have kind of ruined the eurovision for me
Enter Name Here Agree, so true
I agree too, for me it was better than all the songs in english
Agreed, if anything countries like Serbia and Portugal have showed that it's not impossible to win singing in your own language 🥰
But sorry.Because it is unfair to a lot countries.UK,Malta and Ireland will kill them just like the 90s.
One of the best runner-ups ever, R.I.P Ofra
She should've won. She was better than the winner from Luxembourg.
why do you have the LGBT flag? Don't call yourself pro LGBT when you don't support all LGBT people. You clearly do not support palestinians

@@royestondsouza4069 I AGREE 👍 WITH YOU. LUXEMBOURG 🇱🇺 DIDN'T DESERVE TO WIN. OFRA HAZA WAS 1000 TIMES BETTER THAN CORINNE HERMES.
@@giorgosfylaktou2610 seriously!! What was the judging panel thinking. Ofra was on another level.
I always get so sad. We (the world) lost such an amazing singer far too soon. There was something so magical about her! She transcended borders. I still listen to her amazing voice daily. Love from Morocco!
Do the moroccans allow Jewish/Israeli singers to be heard? I know the Jordanians and Egyptians do not.
@@TheBlueyedblond There's no such ban in Morocco as in the Middle East. Jewish/Israeli singers have performed in Morocco at different festivals. The right hand of the King of Moroccan (current and former) Andre Azoulay is Jewish and he has a great influence on restoring and maintaing Jewish history and Jewish Moroccan traditions in Morocco.
@@TheBlueyedblond That isnt true. Ofra was huge in the Arab world and she had fans send her love letters. She herself said so.
Love to Morocco too!! ❤️🇲🇦
@@TheBlueyedblond I am from Jordan and listen to a lot of Hebrew and Yiddish music.
What do you mean that Jordan doesn't allow them to be heard? I was not aware of this. Do you mean that it is illegal for them to perform in Jordan or do you mean that listening to Israeli music is banned in Jordan?

This song was a true winner.
Saw her in person when I lived in Israel. She was beautiful. Love her voice.
Really? But I guess she died before I was born and I'm 20 now
This for me was the winning song in 1983. I still remember it clearly. Israel's best entry also. Such a beautiful soul. R.I.I Ofra.
I AGREE 👍 WITH YOU. ISRAEL 🇮🇱 DESERVED TO WIN, NOT LUXEMBOURG 🇱🇺.
I agree that this was and should have been voted as the winning song and had the good fortune to have watched the competition then while in Israel. My memory is that Greece and some other countries dishonestly and discrimanantly gave Israel low numbers which caused the song and Ofra Chaza to come in second place.
@@donsable3880 YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT AND I AGREE 👍 WITH YOU. THE LOW POINTS GIVEN TO ISRAEL COST THE WINNING PRIZE.

What a beautiful voice. Rest in peace, Ofra! :'(
She sang this because she was a Jewish girl that lived during the Holocaust and now she is here, in Germany, 40 years later singing about she and her people are still alive.

How did I never know that Ofra Haza competed in Eurovision until today?!
Also WHY DIDN'T SHE WIN!?
People have been asking themselves that since 1983. She definitely should've won - she was only 6 points unlucky!
BECAUSE SOME COUNTRIES DIDN'T GIVE THE POINTS ISRAEL DESERVED, MAINLY POLITICAL REASONS, AND UNFORTUNATELY THE POINTS HAD GIVEN TO LUXEMBOURG WHICH DID NOT DESERVE TO WIN, THAT'S THE MAIN REASON.
