Lyrics:
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down
ye-eah we wept, when we remembered Zion.
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down
ye-eah we wept, when we remembered Zion.
When the wicked
Carried us away in captivity
Required from us a song
Now how shall we sing the lord's song in a strange land
When the wicked
Carried us away in captivity
Requiering of us a song
Now how shall we sing the lord's song in a strange land
Let the words of our mouth and the meditations of our heart
be acceptable in thy sight here tonight
Let the words of our mouth and the meditation of our hearts
be acceptable in thy sight here tonight
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down
ye-eah we wept, when we remembered Zion.
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down
ye-eah we wept, when we remembered Zion.
By the rivers of Babylon (dark tears of Babylon)
there we sat down (You got to sing a song)
ye-eah we wept, (Sing a song of love)
when we remember Zion. (Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah)
By the rivers of Babylon (Rough bits of Babylon)
there we sat down (You hear the people cry)
ye-eah we wept, (They need their God)
when we remember Zion. (Ooh, have the power)

This was way ahead of its time. Boney M deserves much more recognition
Why ahead of its time?!? Besides it was in play back, not them singing, as was the habit back then
@@l.ferrandino5939 either way they deserve more recognition
@@StarZendonna1687 Ok, but you did not answer my question "Why ahead of its time?!?".
@@l.ferrandino5939
I don’t believe this
I have to answer to everything here?
I was referring to the lyrics to the song and I know that it was written 8 years before the lyrics was more educational to me.

But while the song is cheerful and it's suject biblical in nature, it is about being exiled and enslaved in a foreign land. It's not about the Bible, and it's most definitely not about any God.

Yes Vote..for Bonny.M..
This is a very easy question to answer. The black guy dancing around is not singing anything, the song was written by a german white guy who is doing the singing, the guy you see jumping around is lip syncing. In addition, the good looking gal the camera is focusing on is also lip syncing, she is in there as window dressing. The person who created this whole thing should get an award.

Psalms 137 verse1 By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept
when we remembered Zion.
2 There on the poplars
we hung our harps,
3 for there our captors asked us for songs,
our tormentors demanded songs of joy;
they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”
4 How can we sing the songs of the Lord
while in a foreign land?

Amen. It's curious to think that such Godly sentiment would be "cancelled" immediately in todays culture. What a shame it is for art today to be deprived of such meaningfulness, and to find itself so debased as a result.
Hey, sounds like you forgot the rest of the psalm:
7 Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation.
8 O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us.
9 Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.
I came to see if anyone else had noticed this. So many layers to this song that the whole world has missed. They were singing deliverance over Black America, maybe they knew, maybe they didn't May God open our eyes. 🙏🏾
when they talk about timeless music this is it..
River of Babylon is fantastic 😊
Almost 40 years later the quality of the audio is really good!
@Peter Evans . This recording is analogue. Digita recording of music began in the midst 70's with classical music , made by Philips and Deutsche Gramophon . In the end if 70's, Giorgio Moroder made the first digital recording for an album, the mane is E=MC². But the first album totally in digital recording was The Visitors, the last album of ABBA. It's realized for a "new" technology called compact disc. An analogue recording if well done can be so good than a digital recording, but to show their sound quality depends of the transcript to digital.
Boney M Started, 1976
@Peter Evans in the 70's there's a standard level for digital recording in bits . The consumer standard choose is 16 bit, the recording studio at the time in the early of 80nuses 32 bit. In the 80s Stwart Copland, former drummer of The Police did an d'Italia album called The Rithmatist. He used a equipament that uses a 13 bit.
Still better than today’s Audio recordings

So weird people are commenting on this lately it's such a great song ....I also listened to a lot of Eddy Grant tonight as well and Boney M. 300 times on loop....
Well, the words ARE taken from the Bible. Psalm 137:1,4-5 and Psalm 19:14.
@@stephenwoehr6500 I can't find words for your kind comment!
I love Boney M and their song's. They made and still make people happy .😊
Hello Debbie
How are you doing today?
of course, it's fantastic😍
I'm in the Philippines and I listen this song every day, whether original or kareoke.
I was born in '76. I remember this song from when I was little and it was played on the radio. I'm also pretty sure that my parents had the record, too which is why I know it so well and loved it back then.
For some TOTALLY random reason it just popped in my head just now, after all this time?! Weird.
It's so odd hearing it now when I'm 46, and actually hearing the words and understanding them. Esp now I've just become a Christian 3yrs ago almost (baptised last year.) So I'm like, "Oh, that's what it's (the song,) all about."
Amazing song!! And wow their voices are so good!! 😍❤
Im from 74 love bony m!
That's a great story! Congrats on finding Jesus! I'm a bit younger, but I had the same thing happen with the song Baba Yetu from the game Civilization 4. I liked the song, but forgot about it. Then I found it again after converting, and come to find out, the lyrics are the Lord's prayer in Swahili. It gave a whole new meaning to the song and I praise God for it!
@@BigSunshine55 TY!
And yes, it's surprising (to me,) *just how many* songs are actually about God or biblical times, that I've heard and listened to time and again and it's only now I'm a Christian I recognise that at all!
I suppose the whole "Eyes to see and ears to listen," couldn't be truer, eh? 😉
🙏
