wanted to play HOI.
three hours later im still watching tutorials
My suggestion is just try to play it and come back here whenever you confused, you will learn much faster that way.
Me too, it's fucking confusing sad that HOI4 doesn't actually have a tutorial
StepOne well it does but it sucks sooooooo bad
@@commissar_of_h0mophObia try writing things down thats what im doing
@@awesomebrothers5948 I finished it and then came here. I was more confused after it was over than before. It just half assed gave me information without explaining it well lol.
First unpause in third episode of series. Clearly a Paradox title :)
Prepare lots of hot chocolate, comfy sitting positions and three lives worth of spare time to spend!
3 lives? OK, I can book that for lives 9, 10, and 11. 1-8 are taken up by EU4 and Factorio atm... :)
Juliean Galak nah in my opinion it’s a paradox game if because of sitting so long you forget how to walk and almost eat shit ( personal experience ) but yeah also what you said I guess
This is a hardcore truth in the Paradox community. Made me laugh.
That the risk when u play paradox game xd
Episode one: I am going to go through this tutorial very quickly
Episode three: Finally unpauses the game
facts
true
I can feel my brain expanding as I watch these videos
this game makes me gain iq
200th like, don't forget me.
You basically need a masters degree to learn this game
Welcome to paradox studios grand strategy games :D
Exactly
Sounds about right.
You need a brain to learn this game.
@@hiraldosternflyer7112 You need a brain to learn a lot of things.
Wasted an opportunity to call the theatre 'Finnish Line' there, Quill.
LOL! My friend from Finland used to say "I'm not Finnish, I'm just getting started!"
Good job!! I am 83 years old, so I play you at half-speed.You sound like you have had a few,but very funny!
damn, you played HOI4 in real life then!
w h a t
oh i get it
You are 83 years YOUNG! I'm just starting this series and I am so lost. Hahaha. Enjoy the game!
@Astuteous Maximus well, ive seen it work once lol. A guy got protected in the end game by crawling behind them. Look up sasquatch challenge jason sulli. Its a good laugh anyway
WOW! Paradox should pay you for creating this extensive tutorial!!
i think soo, even the developer only make the short tutorial ingame... appreciate this guy
Agreed, his tutorials are amazing, I'm burning to play this game but need to watch the other episodes as playing the game cold is like trying to write a novel in Latin when your only experience of Latin comes from Warhammer 40K.
@@adammclaughlin845 ahh a man of culture. Now I’m imagining this game with 40k units
Yeah especially since their tutorial is absolute shit like it just dropped me in there and didn't tell me want to do or how do you want anything it was basically just tool tips which is not a tutorial
i am pretty sure they have sponsored him multiple times
Bought HOI4 a few months ago, played several hours but didn’t understand everything. Thanks for the tutorials.
ive got over a thousand hours into hoi 4 and im still watching this lol
did you ever conquer the entire world
A thousand hours AFK is just as bad as a newbie. Just saying.
this game is so complicated thanks for this i can't wait to finish the videos and start playing
It isn't complicated in the sense that it's hard, but there is a lot to know. These videos definitely help to know what everything is, but anyone reading this should know that you gotta put it to use and play 5-10 games to about 1943-46 (depending on how fast it unfolds) before they start to turn the tables on the AI
hehehehe try and play eu4 much more complex
Eu4 is nothing compared whit hoi4 like u have to make tons of stuff
@@andree614 i have played both games and hoi4 is far more ez to acces, the learning curve for eu4 is far more steep than that of hoi4, it sometimes seems to me as if hoi4 is a watered down version of eu4. I am talking about the overall mechanics and flavour of eu4, the only thing where hoi4 has much more content is how your units are built and that u can activly change equipment.
On a note i own all dlcs in eu4, hoi4, ck2 and stellaris so i am basing my experience on those items since both base games (eu4 and hoi4) lack content without extra money.
Side note 2: with the new emperor update eu4 has surpassed limits with its gov cap
Side note 3:and i hope they make bigger repricussions to expansion for hoi4 since a wc is far to ez
@elli Seeley nope
fast explanation: hoi4 has much less mechanics to learn and much less flavour, u dont even get rebels and the overall government form are also lacking,
whilst eu4 may not have the depth in the army control and equipment options it has much more mechanics in other places that are much more spred out.
in hoi4 u only need to learn how to control and equip your army and u have won the game, in eu4 u need far more.
for people who dont understand, just look at how hard a WC is in both games:
hoi4 ez
eu4 hard
As someone who played a few strategy games, I admire how intricate and organized the assignment system of HOI is. It makes the endgame much less of a chore.
No quill you must use the star for your armies for reasons. They should also all be red.

i mean it's a tutorial for absolute beginners, he doesn't need to do the PROFESSIONAL level.
Wait... This is 3 out of 7???? So I've Studied this game for 1 hour and a half???? WT****
This game is really is hard. My friend has 800 Hours on the game and still doesn't master almost anything, it's a tough game.
Welcome to paradox studios games :D
Over an hour in, “We’re now through most of the menu,”
These are amazing beginners guides, thanks - I've sunk hundreds and hundreds of hours in EU4 and wanted to try this too but was intimidated by yet another steep learning curve. This really helps, will definitely pick it up in the next Steam sale.. itching to start playing now!
It's in sale right now i just bought it
@@SpecialScarab yep, me too, thanks :D
You've arrived at the very best place for HOI 4 tutorials. quill18 is the VERY best at it. Thanks quill18.
Man! I have been drawing battle plans like "arrows", and was wondering why the hell my army behaves so stupid. Turned out I am the one who was stupid.
Thank you!
"You want to grab some amount of dudes, and make an army."
After hearing this I subbed. Great content.
Just a note, you referred to Manchukuo as Mongolia. 13:45
Manchukuo/Mongolia , Po-tay-to/Po-tah-to :D it's difficult to concentrate on details when you are big as USSR :D

@@noobo569 Confused Confucius spreading Confucianism

The USSR requires plenty of micromanagement to function in-game and IRL.
That's why it was called a " Totalitarian " state.
Predrag Petrovic just saying no one says Po-tah-to.
Edit: well no one that I know says po-Tah-to
I bought it months ago touched it for 1h never touched it again bc I didnt understand anything even the game tutorial is complex, a few days ago I decided to give it a shot and stumbled upon this tutorial, thanks bro❤
when you send your divisions to finland they started to send their own troops to the border
Just started these, I usually play Stellaris as the Paradox games are just to mind boggling for me, but I looked HoI4 in the store the other day and noticed that it has DLC for Sabaton, As a WW2 buff, and Sabaton fan, I pretty much owe it myself to get this game.
@quill18 This is the best tutorial of this massively complex game on the internet. Thank you so much for helping me to understand what is going on.
Thanks for the videos... I only played one game so far and managed to take down the Soviet Union as Italy but did a Mussolini and ended up losing half of Italy because of not knowing how to garrison my armies to defend my coastline. Britain and the US just kept naval invading unopposed and I did a Mussolini having to have Germany save my butt at every turn and ended up losing half of Italy to the germans.
1:00 A division is made up of several Brigades, which have battalions. Each battalion have several companies. Each company is divided into platoons, each platoon have groups and groups have squads or teams.
just to help you understand Quill18
But thank you very much for some nice learning videos. :)
Close, an army group is larger than a division. Platoons are made up of squads with nothing inbetween
@@cmelton6528 We definitely had fireteams in our squads when I was in the Army lol
I just must say... I had friend get me into HOI recently, and I really appreciate these tutorials.
I also was getting into Civ VI and saw your other series...
... I love you for your help...
After sinking my teeth into my first game I can definitely say these videos are very helpful. I watched them before I started and have had already had to come back to this one.
I used your older version to learn hoi4, originally, years back. Coming back and this series id a great refresher :)
This is being one the best tutorials I've ever experienced so far... Brilliant job @quill18, you get me hooked to your explanations in a fantastic manner! Can't wait to continue this serie!
Dude, this tutorial is really the best one, I ofc see people say this on every different tutorial but this one i really mean it. I had a few obscure questions i thought would be hard to have answered and you just so happened to answer them in this video. Really good job.
dude ive always wanted to play these games with this level of detail but its so daunting and i had no idea where to start. you making this video is a god send i just wanted to thank you for putting this much effort in so that others can enjoy the game thank you so much. what once seemed impossibly complicated is now a full fun game with amazing detail
I'm learning so much here. I started learing hoi4 again this weekend. I googled a bit and figured I'd just wing it . And with that experience I now figure I better watch some more of your excellent tutorials!
I really love they tutorials. I always get sucked in then stop playing hoi 4 for months and forget how to do small things and these are great. They also explain small details on minor things I'm not sure what they do.
I just started watching the third episode and so far I am very satisfied from the level of detail you explain things. Hopefully I will learn at last play this game. Thank you and thumbs up!
16:43 do it Poland! Do it! You know you want to!
Literally finished the first 2 and this one popped up! Huzzah!
Literally the same thing happened to me LOL
man you are just the best Tutorial i have seen my entire life
and your sound and accent are just perfect man
You are a god send! I watched Paradox's how to play guide yesterday for 5 hours and I have learnt far more here in 2!
This has been such an amazing tutorial. THANK YOU! I look forward to binging the rest of the series.
Fantastic tutorial! I was about to return the game until I saw this series- Thank you!
really great tutorial, thanks for sharing, new to this game and addicted to it, but just too many things to learn
now this is high quality content
thank you for making these. i bought the game and ALL the dlc today... started as japan.... didnt know wtf to do... and this is coming from over 1000 hours in other paradox games... i was so lost thank you so much. well worth the watch
Dude! Thank you for the video. I almost give up trying to understand how to play this game. Salute!
For Australian, our Army is broken up like this: Section (9-16 Soldiers) > Platoon (3 Sections) > Company (3-4 Platoons) > Battalion (4 Companies) > Brigade (3-4 Battalions) > Division (3 Brigades) > Corps (2+ Divisions) > Army (2+ Corps)
I am so thankfull for these tutorials they are amazing
Great Vids/ understanding the full extent of the GUI, make one appreciate the depth of the Game/mechanics...thx
This makes me wanna play some more 😄👌
@quill18 Soldier
An Army is in between a Corps and an Army Group - an Army is about 3-5 Corps, an Army Group is a group of 2 or more Armies. 'The Army' is all your land troops.
Thank you. This is exactly the sort of things I didn't just learn on my own.
this video is really handy , thanks a lot man
This was MASTERFUL!!! Thank you SO much!
40 hours in and i now see that i never once made my attack plan right
i always tried to draw a line between where my units start and where they are supposed to push, which messed them up and i didnt understand wtf they were doing
Edit: Also never had a field marshall ever
this is the best HOI tutorial out there.
I think it’s very educationally useful that you give those illustrative examples, images, of what the game mechanics represent. Like with troops Digging In, and so forth. I don’t personally need it, I can understand and visualize it just fine, but for some other people, it might be very helpful, helping them to understand what the game mechanics represent in in-world terms. Bringing the numbers to life.
Excellent tutorial on how to work with armies, just got the game and got the economics and research side working for me, now I can get my armies organized. Looking forward to the rest of your tutorials.
As a hex and counter wargames veteran with many years of service on the Eastern Front, I find you not organizing your armies according to Soviet Military districts... unsettling (trying very hard not to yell expletives at my computer :-)
I bought this game a year ago. I went on for 10 min and never went back on however I have decided to try again after failing multiple times to learn the game I have watched this tutorial series and damn I have finally played a few games and done kind of okay. Nice one 👍
Very nice, I'm learning very quickly! Thanks!
Thank you for this tutorial!
I always feel bad for the regular infantry divisions. I'm pretty sure they have to march all the way to their destination. Meanwhile the motorized infantry get to laugh at them as they drive by.
Thanks for the video, needed help for a very complicated game, just wish you had muted the background music!
13:42 @quill18 that is manchuria, not mongolia
I cant get over how much you sound like Jo Lo Truglio. Thats a compliment btw and also this is the best tutorial ever on HOI4 all the other ones are useless.
I've done some EU4, but this seems way more complex. I'm into that.
It's extremely difficult to catch up on what he's saying especially when you don't have the game like me.
But seriously though, this was a good tutorial. You deserve much more credit!
ive got 228 hours in hoi4 and still watching tutorial and thats good because im still learning such few things like planning speed i didnt know where i can see it
Fantastic tutorials. Thanks!
best game tutorials ever!!!!!!
I used this guy's tutorial for eu4 so now its time to use his hoi4 tutorial.
Gold standard tutorials. Subscribed permanently.
Thank you so much for your videos! I'm wondering how I can pick the legend Josip Broz Tito from the start for Yugoslavia? By default I start with Prince Paul.. or even better do a gameplay of Yugoslavia 😊 either way, you are been appreciated for your efforts.
Please make a tutorial series for EU4.
learning a lot here, thanks
Poor Poland. The tutorial's not even unpaused yet and they still get picked on.
Such a fine tutorial
This is my first time playing a stratergy game, i bought this game purely out of my intrest in history. ussauly i play fps games and this a a new genre for me. you need a phd to learn the basics of this game
When you were shuffling units around between the armies, I missed how you did that. Alt? Ctrl? Shift?
just right-click
meant to post here about the index, as here is where you tell us how to use fronts. any ways, thanx. now i can do stuff!! lol
0:48 Brigades, Battalion is a lesser formation. It is what makes a brigade (usually 3 or 4).
Thanks so much for tesching me how to play this
I saw the division designer
Is a combined arms division made up of infantry, artillery and amor possible? (basically a brigade)
Wait you posted this all in one day!Didnt notice that first time i watched...
Excellent videos. Do I get a certificate when I complete them all? Or is there an exam that I need to take?
Cant wait for austriahungary when dlc comes out. There are instant movement in Hoi4 troops and instant production cheats at
very informative
Damn I fell asleep, now to rewatch it again
I love how he just decides to prepare for war with Poland because why not, its Poland.
punching bag of hoi4
It’s going to be days before I can even play the game, good gracious
I was so confused with the fall back line! I thought it was something you set up like an offensive line, except your troops will fall back to it when the front line was broken!
Quill, in case you were curious it goes something like this. Fire Team, Squad, Platoon, Company, Battalion, Brigade, Regiment, Division, Corps, Field Army, Army Group, Theater. This is the basic breakdown of the organizational structure of an army, where each one consists of multiple of its predecessor. Fantastic video and thank you for taking the time to explain this game in great enough detail for me to feel comfortable with the idea of making the purchase and jumping in having never played before.
Wow! YES! Fronts--Army Groups--Armies...so, this is the "Grand Strategy" bit I've been hearing about. Draw lines, make arrows, plan, ensure generals are commanding forces that match their specialties, acclimate troops, ATTACK! And as fun as all that is, I'm still leaving out the factories, preparing Divisions, etc, etc. WOW!
Finally a tutorial that makes sense
Very useful! I really messed up my first game, haha. I figured I had played Stellaris and CK2 for 1500+ hours total so I could handle another paradox game. I was totally confused when it came to offensive lines. I kept trying to draw them like spearheads. Whoops.
Play at 1.5x speed makes it more manageable as long as your paying attention you should have to basics down.
Army Group (XXXXX) 2+ armies
Army (XXXX) 2+ army corps
Army Corps (XXX) 30 000+ / 2+ divisions
Division (XX) 10 000-20 000 / 2-4 brigades
Brigade (X) 2 000-5 000 / 2+ regiments or 3-6 batallions
Regiment (lll) 2 000-3 000 / 3-4 battalions
Battalion (ll) 300-1 000 / 2-6 companies
Company (l) 100-300 / 3-6 platoons
Platoon (...) 30-40 / 2+ squads
Squad (..) 4-12
Patrol (.) 3-5
I love that part when you say to that one mountain division. YOU!
A funny part of this game is that there a voice in your head yelling at those divisions =)))))
This game reminds me of siv games but gust focused on military
hey i have a question how much army a division have how many troops
?
You wrote "Finnish Front" as an army name, but never came back to it. Idk if that was intentional or if you meant to actually complete what you were doing in the tutorial. FYI. Otherwise great tutorial.
