  • It’s official: The next time a baseball game is played at Progressive Field, fans will be cheering on the Cleveland Guardians.
After more than 100 years, the team is retiring the name the Indians, and fans showed out at the last home game loud and proud.
Dusk has set and the lights are off for the era that once was. In Cleveland, rooting for the home team will be new.
“It’s the last time we'll see the Cleveland Indians,” one fan told 3News.
“It's a bittersweet thing,” Jim Curtis said.
“I’m definitely going to miss the Indians,” Adam Powell said.
A roaring in the crowds at the team’s final home game of the season echoed across downtown Cleveland. Memory lane was the course that settled in as fans left Progressive Field with the final win in The Land.
“The Indians’ last game at the old stadium, it kind of felt that way here today,” Duane Sunagel said.
“I didn't really think of it as a goodbye Indians, I thought of more thank you Cleveland,” another fan told 3News.
Cleveland has a storied baseball history, even before the name "The Indians" even became a household name.
According to Case Western Reserve University's encyclopedia, the baseball team was founded in 1901, and was first known as the Blues.
The team would go on to adopt the name the Broncos, then the Naps, before becoming the Cleveland Indians in 1915, honoring the Penobscot Native American baseball player Louis Francis Sockalexis, who played for the Cleveland Spiders in the late 1800s.

Sad....not sure how Indians could be hurtful towards people who call themselves Indians. We are truly living in the Twilight Zone my friends.

I’m full Native and I think it was awesome to have that name and style on their team.

Literally don’t know how the word for “people from India” is racist

Since they changed the name of this club, I don't think it's the same, the name "Indians" was something historical and worthy of admiration towards the Native Americans, I never saw racism anywhere

Every man has to pick a hill to die on and If Cleveland baseball ⚾️ fans had any self respect they would turn their back’s on that Anti American team and walk away!

I remember in the movie Major League the owner wanted to move the team and the only way she could do it is to make it so bad that the attendance dropped and they were able to break their lease. She should have just changed the team name to something stupid and it would have been easy for the attendance to drop so low that the team could be moved.

You should have just said "Last home game as a franchise" because they're done. Moving out of Cleveland is pretty much done now.

Braves didn't change their game. THEY WON A WORLD SERIES. Should have won in 2016, then maybe we wouldn't have changed it for stupid ass political reasons.

I know the Braves situation was different. For whatever reason the Indians were never able to build a good relationship with the Native American community while the Braves have done so. But I agree the name change was stupid and I hate this political correctness crap too.

    You'll never win another pennant.
Absolutely positively the worst nickname in all of sports.
What are they "guarding"? It's a better name for a basketball team.

@@ajp5556 lmfaoooo. Buddy yes I do live here. This team is just as trash now, look at the attendance numbers. It took the nicest day of the year and a holiday weekend to get numbers even close to 2016 in the seats this past weekend. Enjoy your .500 bridge bois. Hope you lit all of your Cleveland Indians merch on fire. Wouldn't wanna be called a racist.

The owner would probably have moved the team already if it didn't cut into his profits so much to pay to pack everything up and move it.
