Unai Emery: From ‘good evening’ to an elite cup specialist.
In this football manager bio, we’ll take a look at Unai Emery, a man with one of the more interesting careers in football given his penchant for winning trophies while simultaneously being ridiculed in certain parts of the world. From his beginnings in Hondarribia in the Basque Country of Spain, setting records with Sevilla, to his time with PSG and Arsenal, and back to Spain via Villarreal.

As an Arsenal fan I was honestly skeptical of Emery when he was first appointed, but by the halfway point of his debut season I started to buy what he was selling. He finally found a way to get Aubameyang and Lacazette together, mask Kolasinac's defensive limitations and get Ozil firing. But then he started making mistakes of his own in the latter parts of that season, especially in that run of games against Palace, Wolves and Brighton that basically cost the club a Champions League spot. And after the EL final defeat, instead of building on what worked for him he threw all of his progress off the window and almost tried a different approach each game.
He consistently used Xhaka dangerously close to the box, which given the fact that Arsenal didn't have a lot of the ball led to more defensive mistakes, more fan anger and eventually his outburst. He inexplicably used Torreira as an attacking midfielder. He sacrificed Arsenal's attacking prowess from the previous season but with no strength in defense as well. He gave the captaincy to Aubameyang after stripping the armband from Xhaka, which cost the team dearly since, although he was the team's best player and he would continue to be throughout that season, there was barely any indication that he could ever be captain material and could only be sustained by good performances on the pitch.
I honestly rate Emery as a manager, I certainly can't argue with his achievements, especially with less fancied teams like Almería and Villarreal. I also understand that sometimes certain managers are meant for certain teams, and sometimes they aren't. Having said that, I always found a bit annoying that Emery likes to point fingers at everyone but himself when talking about his spell at Arsenal, especially now that he finds himself in such a different position. The mockery he faced, which at times turned into blatant xenophobia, was absolutely appalling and unacceptable, and could be a factor in his frustrations. But I think Arsenal's decision to sack him in 2019 was the right one in context, and all parts involved seem to have found the right balance to move forward now.

    • @cbarclay99
      @cbarclay99 Před 2 lety +3

I agree with what you say. What we don't know is the backing that Emery received at the club from the board and executives. Were the players given signs that Emery was disposable, signs that encouraged their disrespect and rebellion?
Whatever happened under Emery, the board learnt that the players needed to be in no doubt as to who was in charge of the team. Arteta has been told to impose his expectations on the squad and to exclude anyone who refuses to meet them. This Arteta has done ruthlessly, possibly to short-term detriment such as with the sale of Auba, but to the long-term benefit of the club.

    • @santiagobauza4257

@@cbarclay99 Agree. Unfortunately, apart from the mistakes he made, Emery's stint also coincided with Sanllehi's horror tenure as DoF at the club, sanctioning some horror agent-influenced deals in the middle. And by his final months the players also realised that he didn't exactly have a plan to stick to for the long term, which is why Arteta is so much more accepted in the dressing room.

Dare I say it but the people in Spanish football circles understand that you cannot base your opinion of a coach, player or club on bants, memes and trolls. It's a surprising aspect of the game in England especially, just look at the way Lukaku is being treated even though he showed us all in Serie A that given time, patience and confidence he can be a top 5 striker. This trend is not so widespread in Spain, otherwise, Madrid would have never hired Ancelotti after the Everton disaster, Villarreal would have never gone and hired Emery and Barca would have avoided signings like Auba and Adama. Right now, United just passed up on the chance to get Pochettino, because he has suffered at PSG like Ancelotti, Tuchel and Emery before him. As highly as I rate Ten Hag, United has an environment that would have better suited Pochettino plus you wouldn't have to start worrying about adjustment periods. All the best to Ten Hag though, he has quite the job on his hands. Anywho, my hope is that a La Liga team like Valencia or Sevilla can pick him up after he leaves PSG because believe it or not Pochettino is a bloody good coach.

As an Arsenal fan, I knew that Emery was doomed from the start. He had to be the guy to offload payers that got too comfortable at the end of Wegner's reign, and never got the backing to build his squad. As an American, I did not realize how much ridicule he was getting for his language barrier. I only thought "Good Ebbening" was a meme and just a funny little thing. For tactics I thought he was actually doing really well for what Arsenal had at the time and that a EL final and 1 point off of 4th was great. Ultimately the pressure from the toxic fans and press at the time believing that Arsenal should have been title contenders or champions league which is ironic... led to him not trusting himself and start overtinkering and lose faith from the players and club.
I think he is a great coach when he is trusted from his players, and board. There also must be a bigger ease for him in Spain that he is able to communicate precisely what he wants. The fact that he has one a trophy and is excelling with the "Spurs" of Spain with ex spurs players shows that he is great. The only issue I see with him is having a consistency over a season, rather than banking on knockout competitions.

He wasnt a good fit for Arsenal, but he is a great manager. Language barrier was a major problem, because a manager is a communicator first & foremost, so if he cant get his points across clearly and with authority, its never gonna work. Its not a coincidence he failed everytime outside of spain, so I dont think Arsenal were wrong to sack him, but the ridicule was a bit much in hindsight...

Despite his cup success, should he still have taken a 2nd shot at premier league with another high profile club like Newcastle or was that another potential landmine?.... Ps. I'm a Gooner, and I've still got a lot of respect for what he's done, especially after dealing with Arsenals toxic Post wenger era

English only speakers gotta be the most arrogant people I’ve ever seen, I’ve never once seen people make fun of others for trying to learn a language that’s not English, often encouraging it, however when a non English speaker learns to speak English and messes up, they get ridiculed for it. Like bro, English isn’t the hardest language to learn or speak, they just haven’t had enough practice, have you ever seen a person tryna speak Chinese, or Korean? They look funny and sound funny as fuck. Not gonna lie. English only speaking people have gotta be the most arrogant people I’ve ever witnessed, I don’t even know where it comes from either

  • @kurington.blogspot7876

I think you put too much emphasis on the ridicule Emery suffered in Arsenal. Arsenal itself is ridiculed by more people than Emery will be in his life time, daily, and has been for decades. Not succeeding in Arsenal is not something average football fan puts much weight on. It's a shitty club way past it's glory days.

The brits make fun of non brits talking english, but they're the only ones who are monolingual all of their lives.
You can'r mock accents if you only speak one language, And Emery speaks at least four languages.
I disagree completelty with your outside vs inside of Spain. It's more of a England vs outside of England. The only people making fun of Unai were brits, and the rest of the world saw him for the great manager he is. His worse decisions have been to go to two toxic clubs that won't get anything with our withouth him, as we've seen how PSG and Arsenal treat their management.
