Other than the relegation after the title, they were also relegated in 2008, after finishing 6th and winning the DFB-Pokal in 2007 and were also the 'victims' of the Bundesliga's most famous relegation thriller in 1999 when they were going into the last match at 12th place, 3 points and 5 goals ahead of the relegation zone (16th place) and still went down.

SK Brann winning the league in 1962 and 1963. They were favorites to win the league in 64, but got relegated in the final game of the season, after losing 1-0 at home to the team at the bottom of the table - Raufoss.
Brann did not win the league again until 2007, and has despite being the only top-level team from the 2nd largest city in Norway - and having the most dedicated supporters in Norway, only won the league three times in the clubs 116 year history.
I also recommend making a video on their 2014 and 2021 season. Utter chaos. The latter one being dubbed "The most perfect catastrophic storm of a season in football history" by the renowned Swedish football podcast When We Were Kings who made a 4 hour long episode about the season. • @thomasfrost3087
      @thomasfrost3087 Před 21 dnem +1

Without checking I recall Real Madrid under Pellegrini getting a ridiculous points tally in early 2010s and not winning the league.
Would be interested if there are any other instances with more nuanced reasons other than just the highest points tally for a great side to come up short, that Alfie may know about.
For instance the side I support, Stoke City, had a great side in the mid 70s and in 74-75 had a season with 5 broken legs to key players and it curtailed our season but we still only finished 4 points behind the top.
Not the closest we’ve come to winning the league but it’s the one that was curtailed partially due to bad luck.
Compared with 1946-47 when we had three of our greatest ever players in the same side. Neil Franklin, the best centre back in the world who Alfie wrote a book about, Stanley Matthews who was possibly the best player in the world or at least the country at that point and Freddie Steele who was a prolific striker.
Matthews, who was our greatest ever player was sold with 3 games to go and we went on to win 1, draw 1 and lose 1 without him. A win on the last day would have won us league but we bottled it.
There may be more nuanced reasons why a side has failed to win a league despite being a superb side and would be interested to see Alfie do a video like that.

    Big mistakes in this video:
1.Napoli went for champions to got relegated in video thumbnail, while they finished 10th this season.
2.Stuttgart had almost got relegated the last season. They won the playoffs to stay.
    Honorable mentions:
1.Greece crashing out in Euro 2008 without point and only scored once, 4 years after their historic triumph in Portugal.
2.Hellas Verona finishing 10th in 1985-86 Serie A, after their historic win. They were even so close on getting relegated due to the Serie A only having 16 teams at that time.
3.Algeria suffered a humiliating exit in 2021 AFCON without a win and scoring once, having just won 2019 AFCON and 2021 Arab Cup and even maintained a long unbeaten streak in international football, at the same time as Italy and Argentina.
4.Last, but not least, PSIS Semarang. This one is from my country, Indonesia. If you don't know, unlike the other leagues around the world, the professional football leagues in my country had actually started in 1994-95, with the creation of Indonesian Football League (commonly known as Liga Indonesia). In addition, the competitions format often changed every seasons, either using the regular round-robin with the play-offs being held after the regular season had been ended or simply the full regular season with only round-robin (the current season of Liga Indonesia or Liga 1 had its new play-offs known as Championship Series, with teams finishing Top 4 qualified to this stage). However, there's only one case where a team has been relegated after winning the league in my country, and that was this club from Central Java. They won the league back in 1998-99, which was delayed because of the country's political and economical situation relating to May 1998 riots, but when the new season had began in 1999-2000, the club suffered its bad form and eventually got relegated at the end of regular season. According to the Wikipedia page of the 1999-2000 Indonesian Football League (in Bahasa Indonesia), PSIS were sitting on 13rd of the East Zone out of 14 teams from this group, with only 24 points.
Additionally, most of the former league winners in my country were struggling to recover after being relegated from the top-tier of Indonesian Football League, such as Persipura (Jayapura) and Sriwijaya FC (Palembang), who had enjoyed a big success in the past and are now in lower tier of Indonesian Football (Liga 2).
Edit: Actually, there are other 2 Indonesian clubs who suffered an immediate relegation after winning the championship: Petrokimia Putra in 2003 and Persebaya Surabaya in 2005. The latter was relegated as a special punishment for not taking a part in the playoffs.
I would also note that Bhayangkara Presisi FC got relegated from this season's Liga 1, having previously won the championship back in 2017, though it doesn't count for this trait.

Alfie, you mentioned the great goalkeeper Frank Swift when talking about Man City being relegated the season after winning the league in 36/37. Frank Swift became a football journalist after he retired. In February 1958 he was sent to Belgrade to cover Manchester United's European Cup campaign and their away tie against Red Star Belgrade. Tragically, he never made it back to Manchester - in those days, the press pack normally flew with the travelling team, and Frank Swift's return journey ended on that fateful runway in Munich.

He managed to bring udinese to champions league, bought inter back where they belong and did wonderful in both his experiences at Roma. Look how insanely tight that City relegation season is. I think converting to 3 points per win to compare by modern standards would be the correct thing to do, even if City wouldn't have actually been relegated with it, but just for the illustration of how close it was.
The winners, Arsenal, would have scored 73 points, and Birmingham would have finished bottom with 48. This is in 42 games. If every team had a PPG matching this over a 38 game season (essentially converting the league table to modern standards), Birmingham would have finished last with 43 points and Arsenal would have won with 66 points. Imagine that today. Insane

    Some honorable mentions:
Juventus finished 12 in 1962 (so worse than Milan in 1997). Bayern finished 10th in a season when they won the European cup. This should give Dortmund hope, if the 10th in Germany can be number one in Europe, so can the 5th team. Stuttgart were always bad when they have to defend the title. They finished 10th in 1985. Betis were 7th after winning the title in 1935, which doesn't sound so bad, but there were only 12 teams in the league and Betis had more losses than wins.
Milan were relegated because of match-fixing, too, before Juventus.

One thing that hurt Leeds was the goalies not picking up backpass rule. I recall so many Leeds game in that title season which would begin with the ball going right back to the keeper and building from that. Also Mel Sterland should have been replaced in the summer as he was no longer fit enough. Leeds didn't do that till late in the season when David Kerslake was signed. Then they found Gary Kelly made a great right back in the summer and thus Kerslake was moved on after only eight games.

Anyway, as it sometimes happens, TPV finished 12th and thus dead last in 1995 after winning the title the previous year, and apart from a return in 1999 have been poodling around the second and third divisions.

5:28 I checked and it that video is not banned in Turkey currently. I also remember watching it back then.
Another reason for Başakşehir's title win in 2020 was that all big 3 Turkish clubs were bad that season. It is sort of a "leaving the stage for children" moment, I don't know if the expression is lost in translation. What I mean is that at least one of the big 3 Istanbul clubs were good each season as far as I remember watching the game since 2007, they weren't in 2020. This is the same with Trabzonspor's title win in 2022 after their last official league title in 1984. In 2022, all the big 3 were awful. If you go and check the final standings you would think that Trabzonspor winning league by around 8 points were no big deal but Trabzonspor were considered champions by January or so, they were so far ahead for the whole season and only starting losing points in the end, that year Galatasaray and Beşiktaş finished around 40 points or more below the champions for example
One other thing, There was also a joke made about Başakşehir having little to no fans, see that year 2020 spring was the time of the covid outbreak and the matches were made without fans for a period, and since they didnt have fans before, covid didn't affect them and they won the league
