I have the AV-8805 and it's wonderful. Does everything I need and sounds great. Build quality is superb. For someone who has traditionally used more "hi-end" in the past, the performance of this unit, even in straight through stereo, was quite surprising good. But since going to full bore AV home theater, I wanted something that gave me all AV the features I wanted, but wouldn't compromise too much the audio quality I am accustomed to. This preamp filled all those requirements quite well. Clearly not as good sounding as my Hovland HP 200 stereo pre, but certainly good enough. I use all Bryston power in a 13.1 configuration using KEF Reference loudspeakers, with a single Rythmik Audio FG-12 subwoofer (one of the few subs that will extend nearly flat down to about 15Hz). For vinyl I use an Oracle Delphi, Origin Zephyr, and Grado Reference. Blu-ray is a Sony UBP-X800M2. I also have a Western Digital PR4100 24TB NAS for files. All of this going to a Sony XBR-85X900F 85"4K TV. The AV8805 is a great no compromise AV Processor.
Great review. I use the 7012 and i am very satisfied coming from Pioneer LX76. Maybe one day going 4 seperates but its very expensive compared to an AVR and i cannot use it that loud in the living room.

The review the rustling of leaves in the quiet place the different dialog etc. Was it difficult fine tuning it to hear those various fuller sounds you spoke of? Also this being a pre amp what manrantz product receiver would you pair this with for your home theater setup ? Will be donating shortly
Good review but I am not sold on needing 13.2 channels. I would rather go 5.1 with higher quality speakers and a zone 2 stereo. Why pay for channels you never use and I do like Marantz equipment. Also I was an early adapter of four channel back in the wagon train days.
Exclent review. I have the SR7012 which has 9 amplified channels and processing and pre-amp outs for 11.2 channels. I have been curious about what the benefit of having the extra 2 channels or 4 outputs. It seems like it would be nice for a whole house set up. Especially with the Marantz remote app to control everything.
Man it’s a preamp 4500 - so I would need 2 separates to power the speakers which if I’m looking for quality another 4 to 5 g’s is that correct - Correct me if I’m wrong - Good review by the way -
Using separates is always more expensive than buying a receiver, but provides more flexibility and you get a more quality (and more expensive) system. Not that receivers are bad. Many great ones out there, but I tend to go the more complicated route...which costs me much more money. 🤦♂️

These reviews, which I do appreciate, are very polished... too polished. Unfortunately I'm the minority I'm sure but feel like these types of reviews are cookie cutter style that lack the character of Gene and Hugo's videos. (Bring Hugo back). Something about the way you talk reminds me of fake news reporters with the robo tempo (normal pitch... transition to high pitch... and end low pitch. On every sentence). That said I still do appreciate the information, just not the delivery. Fortunately I am likely the only person who thinks this lol
For the price is missing an usb port to be able to process hi-def files from my computer using Roon. For now I go with the Emotiva that has one for that.

I have a question. It's something that I really can't understand, no matter how hard I try. Recently I was on the market for a 7.1.4 solution. Finally I went for a midrange 9.2 Marantz with 11.2 preams. I was very tempted to buy a separate sound processor for 11.2 channels and a solid multichannel amp. The problem is that those sound processors are very expensive. For example the cheapest 11.2 processing receiver from Marantz costs around 1400 $. It also has amplification for 9 channels. If you want to buy a processor that has only processing for 11.2 channels and no amplification, it costs way more. It doesn;t make any sense. It should cost less since it doesn't have amplification so the production costs are much lower. With the receiver you buy the processor and the amplification for less money. From my point of view a sound processor with 11.2 should cost only 1000 $, or less.
@@tonyweimar2390 you can still do that with an AV receiver that has preams and all of those midrange-high end receivers have. What does a sound processor do better?
I totally believe in true separates. Separate pre amp and separate amp. As technology moves ahead, the receiver and or pre amp starts to become obsolete, as in a new codec is introduced, like Atmos, and the old preamp cannot decode it. But in the meantime you have a killer amp which never really changes much. It just amplifies sound. I am in that boat now because I want Atmos and my AV8801 will not decode it. I will sell my AV8801 and upgrade to what I need, an AV8805. I already have killer amps so they are keepers. You will get a much higher quality preamp section from a separate than an all in one receiver. A receiver only has limited space in that box and something has to give. My preamp weighs as much as many receivers that HAVE amps built in. I can keep my quality 400x5 amp, change out the preamp and I’m set to go. You get more quality and features (generally) if you go total separates.
So will this AV Separate do everything that an AV Receiver will do? So what is a AV Receiver for? I thought a AV Separate was only good if your AV Receiver needs more power? So confused! 🤦🏻♂️ Thank You!

I have a Cary Amp Theater version 7.1 I hooked up. It actually sounds excellent. I have many other speakers that I have as well...I have a Pioneer sc-95 i'd like to use as another amp to hook up to the Marantz AV 8805...Whats the best way or is it even possible to do....Thanks in Advance :)
WOw not bad, but again 4.5K just for that, then TV, seats ,speakers cables and then a list of Blue ray players which suits it best, like say a marantz blue 4K UHD ray player + new 4 UHD blu ray movies and the list will go on, but again still great upload and keep up the great work champ. :) In the ned people listen to your own ears, not everyone like hi pitched twitter sounds and yet others love it? All up low to mid rage costs around 25K to 35K for a dedicated theater room, not including movies or quality of speakers you can spend money on using bookshelf monitors like yamahas own DSP brand, but then again thats a lot of cash around 50K when you included sub woofers and say even the new NS3000 and front towers are NS5000. :)
Hey have a question when calibrating speakers what determines if they are small or large. My set up are B&W Nautilus 603 for all height, Backs & surr my Mains are B&W 803 center B&W HTM2
When you run Audyssey or any other auto calibration system, it will check the extension of your speakers. If there is capability of producing frequencies low enough and loud enough the manufacturer of the amp chooses to set your speaker as large... HOWEVER... All serious sound engineers recommend to change that setting and wish they could have their calibration software dictate what should be done, not the manufacturer of the amp. Long story short.... ALWAYS set ALL of your speakers to small and leave everything else to your subs. Buy two, or four and place them correctly! It makes THAT much of a difference....
Great review. I have a SR 8012 would you say the 8805 is better and in what way. Eg better Chanel separation and if so what % ? I spent nearly 6 k on the 8012 in Australia.

The AV8805 is a Preamp/Processor. It has no internal amplification built in to drive speakers. You would need to add external amplifiers or choose a receiver like a Marantz SR8012 which has 11 built-in amplifiers.

can you divide the 13 channels pre outs into two amps? one amp with 5 channels (emotiva xpa 5) and the other one with 2 channels (emotiva xpa 2), each amp needs at least 1.5 volts to work at its full rated power. can the marantz provides the 1.5 volts to each amp? i'm honestly thinkin about the marantz av7704 11.2 ch preamp/processor and then divide the 11 ch pre outs into two emotiva's amps.
I’m torn between this and the Denon 8500. What’s the biggest difference in this and the Denon 8500. I see the surround sound formats are different. Could you go into detail about what Theater-Dimensional Virtual Surround is on the 8805? Is this an advantage over the 8500? Thanks for the review.
The biggest difference I see is that the 8500 have internal amplifiers or if you just want to use the pre-out section you could set the avr on preamplifier mode.

I think the 7012 is a better deal if you don't need 13 channels. XLR is only needed for long cable runs and everything else is almost identical. $4-5, 000?? Are you kidding me? It's basically the same as the 7012 with the 9 amps taken out. So you get less for more...Bet it sounds exactly the same, and the 7012 has pre-outs for all channels if your bent on using external amps.
John Smith Yes, John is right. If you want the BEST sound and the ability to have the BEST power supply (amplifier), then separates are the way to go. Denton and Marantz have probably the most user friendly on screen set up menu.

After going through how to set up this receiver, it would have been nice to do an actual test of of how much power this receiver really has, including 5 channel and 7 channel. I guarantee that Marantz, Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer and Yamaha do not have FDP (Full Disclosure Power) rating. That’s why after watching several reviews, reading several reviews online and doing sound tests, I bought the NAD T758 V3. They are honest with their power ratings. Sound and Vision did a review of this receiver and were blown away with its performance. Even at 1% distortion, it gets nearly 70 watts per channel. How many receivers on the market can to that? And it still runs cool!!!! Which means this receiver is capable of much more. Also the price is half that of this receiver you just reviewed. I hit the jackpot with NAD!!!!!!!!

Without question the Marantz AV8805. It's bug free, has a solid reputation for reliability and good warranty, and has a functional room correction system and doesn't say "please wait" while raising the volume control up or down.
Audioholics I just upgraded to the AV8805 from the AV8801 and all I can say is “wow”! A NOTICEABLE improvement in the sound (which was already good in the 8801). Best money I have spent in a while.
Audioholics loving it! Now I just need to find out what I did to prevent audio coming back to the preamp from the TV since the changeover from the 8801 to the 8805? Maybe the HDMI cable won’t work with the HDMI 2.2 on the Marantz properly?
from my search there were already reviews of the Denon AVR-X8500H in January 2018 saying it was the world first... this review is from Nov 2018! But Denon and Marantz are the same company anyway.

Hmm... Outside of the occasional pure opinion, there's nothing in this "presentation" that one couldn't have learned from a quick download and read of the 8805 manual. I reserve complements for innovative insights into products. This comes across as nothing more than a quasi-promo/explanatory piece for general audiences. What I miss is Gene and his meaningful commentary (both of which bring a vastly greater degree of A/V credibility, understanding, and import to the analysis).

there are plenty of audiophiles that will pay the extra money to separate the amp and preamp for the sound quality benefits.so makes sense.

8805 is a processor. You'll need amps for it.

does having audyssey ON boosts the subwoofer? does it increase pressure on the head of receiver?
Vicky Ronnie you can always try out Dynamic EQ or manually adjust the low frequencies if you feel it’s low.

Illyan Zuanich you could use 13 monoblock amps if you wanted too.

I’m torn between this and the Denon 8500. What’s the biggest difference in this and the Denon 8500. I see the surround sound formats are different. Could you go into detail about what Theater-Dimensional Virtual Surround is on the 8805? Is this an advantage over the 8500?

The biggest difference I see is that the 8500 have internal amplifiers or if you just want to use the pre-out section you could set the avr on preamplifier mode.

@@hometheaterenthusiast1566 yes the 8805 only have rca and xlr outputs. Also the 8500 will support hdmi 2.1 but you will have to ship out the avr to denon to change the hdmi board for a fee

I think the 7012 is a better deal if you don't need 13 channels. XLR is only needed for long cable runs and everything else is almost identical. $4-5, 000?? Are you kidding me? It's basically the same as the 7012 with the 9 amps taken out. So you get less for more...Bet it sounds exactly the same, and the 7012 has pre-outs for all channels if your bent on using external amps.
Is it really worth spending more on a preamp than an AVR with external amps? Is there more than just XLR outputs for the price?
John Smith Yes, John is right. If you want the BEST sound and the ability to have the BEST power supply (amplifier), then separates are the way to go. Denton and Marantz have probably the most user friendly on screen set up menu.

After going through how to set up this receiver, it would have been nice to do an actual test of of how much power this receiver really has, including 5 channel and 7 channel. I guarantee that Marantz, Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer and Yamaha do not have FDP (Full Disclosure Power) rating. That’s why after watching several reviews, reading several reviews online and doing sound tests, I bought the NAD T758 V3. They are honest with their power ratings. Sound and Vision did a review of this receiver and were blown away with its performance. Even at 1% distortion, it gets nearly 70 watts per channel. How many receivers on the market can to that? And it still runs cool!!!! Which means this receiver is capable of much more. Also the price is half that of this receiver you just reviewed. I hit the jackpot with NAD!!!!!!!!
The 8805 is a av processor not a av receiver which means it's uses separate amplifiers. Then denon x7200w gets 113 watts 7 channels driven with 0.1% distortion.

Without question the Marantz AV8805. It's bug free, has a solid reputation for reliability and good warranty, and has a functional room correction system and doesn't say "please wait" while raising the volume control up or down.
Audioholics I just upgraded to the AV8805 from the AV8801 and all I can say is “wow”! A NOTICEABLE improvement in the sound (which was already good in the 8801). Best money I have spent in a while.

It's funny denon claims to have the world's first 13.2 receiver. I guess they are all world's first if you put the brand name behind it. Lol
from my search there were already reviews of the Denon AVR-X8500H in January 2018 saying it was the world first... this review is from Nov 2018! But Denon and Marantz are the same company anyway.

Hmm... Outside of the occasional pure opinion, there's nothing in this "presentation" that one couldn't have learned from a quick download and read of the 8805 manual. I reserve complements for innovative insights into products. This comes across as nothing more than a quasi-promo/explanatory piece for general audiences. What I miss is Gene and his meaningful commentary (both of which bring a vastly greater degree of A/V credibility, understanding, and import to the analysis).
