BMW Misfire/ Rough Idle M54 6 Cylinder Low Compression

  • Does your M54 BMW engine have a misfire/ low compression ? Don't be quick to replace the engine. Please try this first before that is done. Could save you $1000's !!! Please Read Below !!!
How this is done: Remove the Coil then the spark plug. After they are ALL out, we pour 1 ounce of fluid into each cylinder. Then I reinstall the spark plugs and let the car sit overnight. The next day you want to remove all the spark plugs again. Place a heavy towel over the valve cover so that all the spark plugs holes are covered. Proceed to crank the motor over using the key. Do this 4 separate times for 10 secs each time. Reinstall all the spark plugs and torque to spec. Reinstall all the coils and connect harness. If you were planning to replace the spark plugs ( Which I recommend ) I would wait till all the cleaning chemical is burned out of the cylinder. Start the car and vary the rpm for 1 minute between 1000 RPM and 3500 Rpm. if the engine seems like it is not clearing out or running rough after the 1 minute. Turn the engine off and restart. After the 1 minute has been completed, then run the engine @ 3500 rpm for 5 minutes ( Pending that there are no other issues with the engine) After that an extensive test drive on the freeway is recommended ( 15-20 miles). This chemical is strong and not healthy to breath so lots of outdoor space and fans to blow the exhaust fumes away is recommended. After all is completed then reinstall the cover over valve cover. Depending on the mileage and time car has been driven in this state, it could take multiple tries to resolve issue. Also it is good to have car diagnosed as a low compression issue before performing this repair, since many other issues can mimic this symptom. Hope this helps!!

This is the best explanation of the cold start problem for the 325/330 m54 motors. The explanation makes sense to why the problem is worse on really cold morning.

I did this and it worked for my 2003 e39 530i!
Prior to, my car was running fine with 160k miles then one chilly day wouldn't start. No warning, no smoke or misfires. Would crank but no start. Thru no codes.
Had fuel, spark. Changed the OEM intake cam pos & crankshaft sensor no luck. Had car towed to mechanic where he found low compression across all cylinders. He also noticed heavy carbon build up on top of pistons. At this point he suggested buying another e39 or replacing the engine. Thats when I came across this video and decided to take a closer look and had car towed back home. I removed the plugs and soaked all the pistons overnight. After removing the injection cleaner with a shop vac I then added a teaspoon of motor oil to each piston. I then perfomed another compression test. Numbers increased dramatically on all cylinders! Re-installed plugs and car fired right up! Thanks for sharing this video! For the cleaner I used BMW's "Fuel injection and induction system cleaner concentrate" part # 82140428376. Same stuff as AC delco.

I just did this on my 2005 330i ZHP with almost 180,000 miles on it and it worked! It was idling very rough and I was like, "Seriously?!?! I've got new plugs and new coils on it, changed the valve cover gasket, intake boots, yada yada yada. Saw this video, pulled out the plugs and dropped some Lucas Fuel Injector cleaner in there and let it sit over night. The next day, I blew out 'some' of the piston holes, put in the plugs and coils back on and fired it up. BOY DID IT SMOKE! But it was the prettiest sounding smoky engine ever! Thank you so much guys!

Dusty, watched your guys video and it was spot on. My sons 02 BMW 325xi was misfiring horribly. It has 170,000 miles on it and was consuming terribly...like a quart every couple weeks. It threw some codes and we had them checked at O'Reilly Auto. Cylinders #2 and #4 were misfiring. Started looking for some insight and found your post. Bought the AC Delco 6xxp cleaner off of Amazon for $15.98 and 6 new NGK Platinum plugs for about $50 (like $8 apiece). Took about 15 minutes to get everything taken apart to get to the cylinders and then poured the cleaner into all six cylinders. Let the stuff do its magic overnight (7-8 hours). In the morning I then covered the engine compartment with rags and turned the motor over until I couldn't see anymore fluid shooting out of the cylinders. The carbon build up was unbelievable. Little pieces shot out of the cylinders all over the engine compartment. The old plugs were absolutely horrible. I wiped everything down. Cleaned the ports out and blew all particles out of the area around the cylinders. I put the new plugs in and started that baby up. She blew white smoke for about 10-15 minutes. Took it out and ran it for about 30 minutes to really heat it up and burnt that stuff out. The engine is running awesome now. I changed the oil for good measure and am hoping this may help the oil consumption too. I can't thank you and your garage for making this post. All told I spent less than $70 and the car is running like new. Thanks!

Thanks for showing us this clever and easy fix. I'm going to get some of that cleaner. In 2005, I bought a 2001 525i that was using 1gt of oil in 1000 miles (at 70,000 miles ). And I was bummed. Well, two AutoRX treatments cleared it up and the oil consumption went to 1qt in 4500 miles. If you still have a running engine, you might try it. These engines suffered from BMW's first attempt at extended oil changes. The system was set for an oil service at 15,000 mile intervals which was way too long. When I changed the oil for the first time, the filter was full of sludge and black carbon chunks due to this crazy service interval. Anyway, I kept the car for 15 years and put another 100,000 miles on it. It was still running great when I sold it a couple of years ago. I miss it. The e39 was BMW's best 5'er.

Had a 94 honda civic someone had done an engine swap on. idled rough but seemed to run ok. blew blue smoke out the exhaust while driving. didnt feel like it had a ton of power but ehh it was a 1.6L 4 cylinder. I did something similar to this just with seafoam (or you can use diesel fuel, same thing basically) and marvel mystery oil. Let the seafoam sit in all the cylinders overnight. came back the next morning and found all but one cylinder was empty. so I turned the engine over with the starter (plugs still out) to blow the rest of the seafoam out. then poured some marvel mystery oil over in the cylinders. let it sit for a few hours. same thing cranked it over to remove any left over mm. Changed the oil cause keep in mind all this stuff is now in the oil thinning it out a lot. Threw the plugs in and took it for a drive up the road. at this point the gunk in the rings may still be there just softened so its important to really get those rings moving around to knock all the soft gunk completely loose and out. So beat the heck out of it. WOT to red line everywhere for about 5-10 minutes (best to do this on a country road). The car will smoke like a mad house for a good bit of that. The civic in question stopped smoking blue out the exhaust while driving and had gobs more power. No long felt like a whimpy 4 cylinder. I wish I had check compression before and after but it had to make a killer difference with how much more power the car had. Would burn tire easily through 1st gear now.

  • @TheJeffcurran
    @TheJeffcurran Před 9 lety +18

A very interesting discovery indeed. I would imagine that this condition is most prevalent in cylinders 3 and 4 since these cylinders scavenge the bulk of oil vapors from the CCV system. I would suggest jacking the right side of the car in order to get the cylinder bores perpendicular to the ground. You want to ensure that the solvent gets access to the entire circumference of the ringland. I think that I will be making this part of a 100,000 mile tune up regimen. Thanx for sharing.

I think I might have the same problem on my 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan. It's misfiring on cylinder number 4 and is losing 40% of it's compression. at idle, it's really noticeable, but when driving, it's not noticeable. What's more frustrating about it, is at night the misfire will cause my headlights to flicker when at a stop. I wonder if the piston rings are just getting stuck as what you mentioned in this video or if it's a bad valve or something? I really hope it's just the piston rings getting stuck.

Hi, i'd love to hear your opinion on my problem with my m54b30 e46 330ci. I get a misfire code on cylinder 4 (and only 4), if I drive the car in 3, 4, or 5th gear, between 5-6000rpm. I live in Germany, so I get that code when driving fast on the autobahn. I have zero problems when doing a cold start. It runs and idles really smooth warm and cold. Coil and spark plug was changed from cyl.3 and the problem stays at cyl. 4. I drive it over 5000rpm and it shuts off cyl 4, and I get the check engine light. The car is only running on 5 cylinders then. 1 minute later the light disappears and the car runs perfectly smooth on all 6 cylinders again. It's a weird problem. My friend said, if the car would have low compression on cyl. 4 it would give me problems all the time, not only at 5000rpm and up. The car is a '02 with 160k mls. I would really appreciate your opinion. Thanks a lot in advance!

I got a question. My 2005 325xi had a blown head gasket. I was checking to see if the block was flat and noticed that the piston sleeves we're higher than the block ONLY IN THE MIDDLE BETWEEN EACH CYLINDER. Uniform in each case. Flush on top and bottom of the block. Is this by design or do I have a problem.??? Thanks so much.

The M54 is a masterpiece but these engines have now fallen into the hands of owners who don't want to spend too much money on keeping them up to spec. But get a good one and keep it maintained and get a feel for its foibles - MAF air leaks, waterpumps, thermostats, coilpacks, ccv, leaking valve covers, and you'll have something that will still be going when they put you in the ground.

I have an 2007 530XI with 174k miles and has been misfiring on several cylinders and resolved a few coils already. However, my #6 still keeps misfiring and took it to a shop and was diagnosed with low compression. Mechanic said could be the cylinder and suggested I rebuild the engine or swap my engine. I was shocked to say the least. Would cost about 3k. This video just gave me new hope. Will try and see what happens. Keeping fingers crossed and will keep you posted.

this helps a lot ! I have the same problem on my 320 ci 2002. misfire on cyl 3 and 5 just until the car worms up a bit, and after that is runing fine, checked coils, replaced spark plugs, nothing seems to fix the problem. i've seen some oil marks on 3 and 5 cylinder head through the spark plugs holes and on the spark plugs when I replaced them. Is this also a simptom related to those rings sticking to the head and allow the oil to pass into the combustion chamber ? thanks in advance !

My father picked up an 05 x5 with the same/similar inline 6 cylinder for next to nothing. It has a similar problem where cylinder 4 is dead, and cylinder 3 is intermittent. (the other cylinders in addition to 3 (somethines) ran roughly 150psi) We swapped coils, spark plugs and that changed nothing. we then soaked all the cylinders in marvel mystery oil, then dumped some snake oil (fuel system cleaner) in to the gas tank then added BG engine performance restoration into the crankcase and ran it for 15 min. We recently purchased the car and started looking it over to see what options and what-not it had (while it was running) and we got to checking out the trunk area and all the sudden the exhaust note cleared up and it started to run perfect on all 6 for about five seconds then went back to misfiring. Going to dump some of that stuff into the yap for a day or 3, get it up to operating temp a couple times and change the oil and hope for the best. I did notice a tapping noise under the valve cover, so we'll probably pull that and have a look as well. thanks for the video!
EDIT: Looks like they discontinued the ACdelco stuff and what is available is $150+. Will look for something comparable that is cheaper. if it works, i'll edit this again in a week or 2

No error code or check engine and I had 4 mechanics take a look ..... no one can figure it out. ignition coils are good, spark plugs are good, No vacuum leaks, No temperature or overheating issues, I monitor the oil levels and its good. I used to think lifters were the culprit, but I guess acdelco cleanup is the solution. My friend that has been helping me with maintaining my E46. He thought it was bad lifters were the cause of the misfire on cylinder 3 because he has seen some that were worse with lifter issues. He drives a E46 330i and has seen that on many E36/E46 he has owned for the past 10 years.

hey there great video !! have you ever seen or dealt with a misfire that turns out being a hole in one of the cylinders ? I have the same bmw 325i and just had it looked at what was thought to be maybe low compression with the coils and or plugs turned out being a hole found in my #3 cylinder resulting in me having to buy a newer motor (which I haven't bought yet) but yet just a couple days I replace the battery and even though it was driving rough I drove it around for a few miles. Seems a little odd to me however these guys were certified specialist with bmw / Mercedes. the car rough idles at 500 rpm. I can start the car but the moment I put it in gear and press on gas the low compression falls and stalls the car out making not able to move. Does this seem possible that I will need to replace motor. First time I have ever owned or had to deal with problem on these cars. Let me know your idea thanks
