Take what you will from this "redemption" but as a non LTT fanboy I'll say this, he still chose to do the video without any knowledge or research beforehand whether the Verge "made" him do it or not he could have at least looked at a tutorial. Then after his "guide" dropped he received some very fair criticisms, the guide was filled with so much misinformation and frankly horrible advice it could have cost people thousands of dollars in damages in following it. (yes, he also received a few unfair criticisms as well, but honestly don't we all? Sad trolls are all over the internet I'd be shocked if you've never dealt with such miserable people. This does not however excuse calling people "sad nerds" or mock people for being poor, or even throwing out baseless accusations of racism.) He chose to defend it of his own will for over two years (whether the Verge lawyers told him to or not is still unproven at this point, but I seriously doubt they told him to drop derogatory remarks on anyone who disagreed with him. It's not like the held a gun to his head to do it, a lawyer can't make you defend something in fact a real lawyer would have probably told him to not say anything at all.) Then in LTTs video he still makes the same exact excuses he has on Twitter in the past, while yes some excuses were valid, like his word vomit and the poor editing done by others showing numerous continuity errors and pointless wide shots, he still won't own up to his mistakes. He also will not ever apologize for the way he treated people, if you remember he never really received a large amount of hate until he started flaming the community that's when the "angry nerds" fought back. So idgaf if LTT made a video with him that doesn't change what kind of person Stefan is and bluntly I don't really care, he doesn't have to apologize if he doesn't want to just proves he's the jerk he seems to be, but an apology would at least be the start of a real redemption.
Also sorry for the formatting I couldn't be assed to word this more succinctly or make it less of a wall of text like I said this is a pretty stupid and pointless topic for me to put anymore effort in than a single paragraph. Just wanted to share my view.
Tl;Dr meh just don't bother reading it if a single paragraph with some run-on sentences is too much.

The odd thing is, these are not mistakes that someone who is _bad at building computers_ would make. These are mistakes that someone who's never even _touched_ one would.
Like they just decided out of the blue they needed someone to do a build tutorial for them, so they just plucked a guy from their... their science news division or something, handed him a wikihelp article and a glossary, and said "just pretend you know what you're doing."
It's kind of hard for me to get angry at the guy. It's like getting someone who's never touched a stove to host a cooking show. For me, the blame's on whoever let it happen in the first place. And say what you want about how he handled it - he was _definitely_ on the recieving end of some pretty disgusting harassment.
BTW, demoning86420 - _"dindoo-nuffin"_ is a pretty well-known racist pejorative. So... you're actually kind of helping Stefan's defense here. Not saying anything, but I'm just sayin 🤷

A budget of $2,000 for PC hardware and they never bothered to invest in a basic set of handtools to help get the job done right.
That pretty much sums it all up about how much of a clusterfark this build wound up being.
That, and confusing a rubber band for an antistatic wristband as well as zip ties for tweezers, is so on-point for the Starbucks-swilling idiots of the Verge. These are people who can't figure out how to change a flat tire trying to build a gaming PC.

@@zenksren8206 TL-DR: ESD Protection, just do it. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
I may agree that the ESD risk may be overblown in some situations. For instance, there's very little ESD risk in the southeast United States in the summer because the ambient humidity is just too high. On the other hand, drier climates can have a higher risk.
But, it's important to point out that such damage has happened. Considering the cost in time and money to fix such problems, unlikely as they may be to occur, it would be wise to take precautions ... especially as warranties on these parts won't cover ESD damage as that's considered neglect.

An aside about the messy cable management in the video- that is exactly how cable management used to be, like in the early 2000's, but with the kind of case that is shown in the video, there is NO EXCUSE for cable management- cases with glass side panels exist to proudly display the components inside and look nice, and airflow is a lot more important in that kind of case than those of back then. Also things are a lot more standardized nowadays. NO. EXCUSE.

I only just came to watch this version, so I apologize for my lateness.
I do appreciate how everyone brought up how the "overhype" issue is actually a thing. I do find myself sometimes staring at Godzilla PCs sometimes, with 196 GB of RAM and four GPUs because I feel like if I don't have ALL THE POWER that I'm somehow going to get left behind or that I'm going to get screwed in some way, when literally my roughest tasks on my computer are modded Minecraft, Stellaris and No Man's Sky. I don't need all of that, but the hype train, combined with "if you don't have newest card, you can't have RTX-3D-NLSS-Super-whatever," here is my broke butt looking at that computer which is literally $80K USD.
And also, in the same vein, people brought up the video-editing issues. In order to dig myself out, information has been my best friend (autism made me fixate on getting the Godzilla desktop, so why can't I dig myself out by learning why it's a bad decision? Redirection is key.) So one of the things I have learned is that GPUs that have the biggest memory and capacities aren't always the best for gaming: there's video-editing GPUs, which are slower on the turn-around but can handle more shit on their desk, so to speak, and then there are gaming GPUs, which are designed to respond immediately but ultimately carry less by a certain limit. While you can run something like Pro Cut on a gaming PC, conflating the two types is a bad idea: a part of what I wanted the 80k monster for was because it had PNY Nvidia GPUs, that had some 48 GBs or larger of memory on each card, but that won't help as much as it sounds nice because those giant cards are meant for processing videos, not for playing games.
Given that context, by the way, while it could also be that he made what others on the original Supercut declared an "expensive DIY fireplace" in the comments, that could be why the computer in the end runs like absolute ass. If he put the memory in wrong, so he only has one 8 GB, slow as molasses DDR4 stick, and he put a 1080 in there that was meant for video editing and not for gaming, then no shit Sherlock would he only have 80 frames in a fucking airplane and be stuck playing his favorite game, League of Legends.
    Garbage in, garbage out.

I remember watching reactions to this verge video back in 2018. It's how I discovered It'sagundam and I was also a complete novice with PC gaming🤣 It piqued my interest in building my own PC and I started watching other PC build channels and did research that culminated in me finally building my first PC in 2021. The reactions to the Verge video showed me that PC building wasn't so hard, if you just follow instructions and don't follow bad instructions😊👍

This is why you are supposed to do research.
I build my 1st PC about 4-5 days ago
But before I did I watch multiple guides and for the most part they were similar except for small differences.
I didn't get it right the very 1st time all 4 of my fans were not coming on and was getting a red light. Took everthing apart put it back together and disconnected wires that could be the culprit and fixed the problem.
This guy obviously is good at talking and making things seem more than what they are.
He probably cost people lots of money smh.

    With ItsAGundam, at about 25:10...
Honestly, I just feel that employers hire people who are just incompetent at that job because they only want charismatic people that they can give barebones wages to.
It's like, if you're good and very qualified at that job, you might want a raise or a higher pay rate. Some places don't like that because they want to cut as many costs as possible.

What’s more insane is there are literally instructions for every single part that tell you how to install each part. someone that’s never built a PC would be better off, going purely off the manuals. It’s like these guys had no idea how to do it and didn’t look at a single manual.

Genuine question. Why are the ram slots set up so that the slots are staggered for the same channel? Is there any reason its set up that way? Cause if i was a layman i’d think that the slots were meant to be paired together.

    • @stephen01king
      @stephen01king Před 10 měsíci +1

That's not how thermal paste works. You either squeeze out all the extra paste out the side anyway, or your thermal paste layer becomes too thick and hampers your cooling performance.

How the people that work there manage to put there pants on in the morning (I gotta theory that they just stay dressed all the time with multiple layers of clothes but thats another thing lmfao) and how this video managed to make it through the people at the verge. Like how does any company with any knowledge at all about computers let this video be posted with their name on it?
