- We get a lot of people asking us what driving license we need for the Mercedes Vario - this week week we talk you through the C1 application, how much it costs and what the test is like!
We also get to explain our top tips for passing and practicing - it's an incredible feeling knowing our dream of a nomadic life in our tiny home is one step closer!

It was so brilliant to finally be able to share the project with them - especially after they'd watched so closely online, Grandad knew more about the electrical system than Max did!
I'm very jealous, I wish I could drive it without having to go through all the faff of another test - hopefully I'll be able to practice a bit more to build my confidence!

Aren't they the best! And my Great Grandma watching every week! We were so proud to be able to finally show them around - grandad said it looked a lot bigger than it does in the videos, grandma said the opposite!!

Passed my test back in 1981 and sometimes it feels like yesterday. However, my 3 year old grandson brings me back down to earth!

As an HGV instructor (including C1) myself, another top tip for people looking to do their C1 test is to look out for local training companies and approach them directly. The 'national' training companies just subcontract out to the local ones anyway, and then sting you with a massive mark-up. I've heard of people paying double or triple what the local companies charge for exactly the same training. Glad you got through first time! Mind if I ask how many minors you got?

Hi another great update, do you have a Tachograph, that monitors driving hours like HGVs?
Thank you Darren! We do actually have one - its been disconnected as the van is registered as a personal HGV so driven for non business purposes. But Max had to learn all about them to pass the theory test!

Huge congratulations on passing your C1 and first time too! MOT success is assured so all you have to do now is everything else in the van and plan the first road trip…so basically lots of work done and not so much more before the fun really begins.

I drive a 7.5 ton DAF rigit lorry. Am only 19 will be doing my class 2 and class 1 very soon.

Hi Both , Congratulations !! , i was a class 1 HGV driver for many years so know what its like taking the tests .
I'm an old goat now ,so i have my granddads rights for 7.5 tonne anyway .
I owned a Mercedes 508d 25 years ago and loved it , i wish i had it now .
May i say you Gran and Granddad are a very handsome couple, cheers !!.

I’m going to get my c1 license this year.
Here in Sweden you can get away as cheap as 330 pounds, and that includes medical, theory, practical and license cost.
Good luck to you! I wish it was cheaper here - it means lots of people are missing out on these amazing vans!

Te he, there is some innuendo there 😉 your van is a bit of a beast, so I think they r both right in their own way. A small home on wheels but a large vehicle to drive 😁

That is a fantastic question! We honestly haven't even thought about it... The build has been so all consuming and with the current situation being what it is, we just felt it was better not to put any major plans in place! We'd better crack a map open soon though - its all coming together now!

Having said that I'm likely looking at much smaller van for weekends and occasional roadtrip, prices for used campers and used base vans still mad though.
People actually pulling £300 scrap vans out of their gardens and asking £5/6 grand!
It’s criminal isn’t it!! We couldn’t believe the value of the varios, it’s gone through the roof since we bought ours!!

The C1 category you are talking about was removed in 1997 . I got my licence just before that. They also made it so you must have your theory test before the practical test at the same time. Got my theory after the practical🙂

Ha thank you!! I’m honestly just jealous - I’d love to be able to drive her without a test, I’m really scared I’ll mess it up... Max is a bit more steady and doesn’t get so nervous!
@@MaxSophieinaVan I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I did motorcycle test in my 40’s and failed my practical. I had been driving so long I was used to my indicators turning off automatically but of course they don’t do that on a motorcycle and I kept forgetting ☹️. Just remember to swing a little wider when taking a corner and to keep an eye out for height signs, especially at car parks 🤓.

Piew piew piew! You guys have a lot of experience filming before this? I cannot find any focus to film, even photos are hard 😅
We had literally zero filming experience - we found it strange in the beginning and honestly sometimes we wish we could just crack on without having to think about the camera...
But when we get to look back at the progress we’ve made and the relationships we’ve formed through CZcams it definitely feels worth it x
