Thanks for this Keith !
I knew about this and checked my licence and also reminded my daughter to check hers !
However …. That was 2020!
Looking at my licence today I see 4b is 11-01-21
So I’ve been driving ( and towing) for almost a year without a valid licence!!
Off to renew now !!
Fortunately got a new passport recently so have an up to date mugshot
Thanks as ever both of you
Howard xx
15 minutes and £14 lighter …. New licence applied for 👍🏻
Hi Howard, It’s disgraceful that the DVLA are not contacting people to remind them to renew their driving licence. We’re delighted our video prompted you to check & you have now renewed your licence. At least the DVLA state that once you have applied, you can drive before the actual licence arrives. Sending our best wishes to you both, Keith & Michele.
Excellent news Howard 👍🏻 Absolutely delighted you’ve got it resolved. Sending our best wishes to you & Sandra, hope you’re both well, Keith & Michele xxx
@@keithandmichele The real disgrace however, is that no one (in the U.K.) takes personal responsibility anymore. Since WW2 the Government (and it’s departments) has been expected to be ‘our parent’ and the people have become children.
Would that new passport happen to be irish i wonder 🇮🇪
A further warning. It's quite common for the DVLA to miss off some entitlements when you renew it. This often happens with motorcycle entitlements. So take a photo of the photocard before you send it off, otherwise proving they made a mistake is very hard.
Thanks for this info. Great advice. Sending our best wishes, Keith & Michele
The DVLA will not except a photo copy of your licence the will only except your pass certificate or a copy provided by your test examiner
@@garywheble4534 - how else would you prove that some categories have been deleted?
@@danensis Gary Wheble is Correct about photo copies. The loss of motorcycle entitlement is more common than you would think. Many years ago a M/Cycle publication suggested. A letter & SAE requesting the return of the old licence (defaced). Or temporarily 'loosing / misplacing' the licence.
absolutely - NEVER renew your licence on line unless you want to lose some of your entitlements! DVLA are very good at missing off your entitlements. I have known motorcyclists suddenly lose their right to ride their bigger bike, only to be told by DVLA that they had to re-take their test!! Money making or what! Without a photocopy/ photo of your old license you will not get back your entitlements......
Thanks Keith I would never had known this .I will inform all my family to check .This definitely would have caught me out .please keep posting invaluable tips .We love watching the channel, regards Andy and Linda
Many thanks for watching Andy & Linda, we’re delighted you found our video helpful. It seems many people have been unaware of this & have been driving without a valid licence 🤨 Sending our best wishes to you both, Keith & Michele.
Thanks for this Keith. I was like you, on the back mine runs out ‘27 but on the front ‘24. I’ve now added to my diary just in case I don’t get a reminder.
Hi Keith and Michele. Very useful heads up and reminder - thanks for sharing this Keith ! Probably helped a lot of folks. Cheers. George and Trish - CaravanningMacs
Many thanks for watching George & Trish, sending our best wishes to you both, Keith & Michele.
This just makes me even more determined to keep my original paper license for another 4 years…until I’m 70! 🙃
Yes, I’m still running on my paper licence but have to finally give this up in another 7 months unfortunately !!
Still got my paper licence!
Thanks for the information. Ive checked and have a few years, but its good to know
Thanks heavens you discovered that!!! As always a really useful video and a great bit of advice, best wishes Paolo and Roger as always x

@@keithandmichele You are most welcome Keith and Michelle. 🙏🙏
Hi Michele. Hi Keith.
Just want to say a big thank you for all of your videos over the past years. We both have enjoyed them so much. Unfortunately my wife and I have had to sell our beloved caravan due to the cost of living going up. The cost of us storing our caravan has gone up, insurance etc, but the biggest rise as we all know is the cost of fuel and as I am only on minimum wage it’s finally caught with us. Please keep your experiences coming, I will still carry on watching them. I hope one day we will be back bigger and better. Stay safe both.
Hi Jeff, Sorry to hear you’ve had to sell your caravan, sincerely hope things get better for you. Thank you so much for your continued support, sending all our best wishes to you, Keith & Michele.
Very helpful post Keith . I did get a DVLA reminder the other day, but it was a suprise to me ! I also thought the licence was valid until age 70. As you mention, that's what it says on the back of the licence. If they hadn't sent the reminder, it would have just run out. No wonder there are 2 million forgotten renewals.
I got caught by this last year. My van that I use for work every day had an engine failure. No van equals no income so the next day I set about hiring one quickly. Only to discover that I couldn’t because my license had expired. I run my business from my house, so when post comes in each day then I sort it into work or home stuff. So I look at my post closely and I can one hundred percent say that I never got a reminder letter either. But let’s be honest that’s not really a surprise. The DVLA is known to be a total shambles.
Always somebody else's fault right lol.
Thank you for this, something we all need to be aware of.
Many thanks for watching Shaun 👍🏻 Sending our best wishes, Keith & Michele.
Nice one Keith. Wasn’t aware of this thanks for sharing
Many thanks for watching Paul, delighted you found our video helpful 👍🏻 Sending our best wishes to you, Keith & Michele.
Thank goodness someone posted this on Facebook as I had no idea. Thankfully I’ve got 2 years left but at least I’m aware. Thank you
Many thanks for watching Iman, delighted you found our video helpful. Sending our best wishes, Keith & Michele.
Beware !
You can’t renew licences for categories over 3.5 T if you are over 70 without an eye test and if you renew on line you will only get the basic categories up to 3.5 T renewed.
It has to be done by post which takes time.
Thanks Keith & Michelle, I didn't know this and have just checked. Mine needs to be renewed 2022.
I will check Lisa's. Thanks for pointing this out. Phil from VW Adventures with Lisa & Phil

Many many thanks for this. I am almost 70 myself and I completely forgot I had to renew my licence. After 50 odd years of driving legally that would have been a real upset.
Stay safe and well and enjoy your holidays. At our age, you never know when you have to stop.
Thanks ! Same date issue with my licence , although I have plenty of time to deal.

Many thanks for this video. It popped up by chance on my CZcams suggestions and I thought "what's this about"? Glad I watched it - I checked my photolicence only to discover that it had expired in October!! Absolutely no reminder from the DVLA (they're a bloody shambles ... presumably still on strike). I couldn't apply online as I no longer have a valid passport, and no suitable PO's in the area, so had to apply for renewal by mail.
Delighted you found our video useful. Many thanks for watching, Keith & Michele
I still have my paper one. This is information is good to know.

Your welcome. Thanks for watching, Keith & Michele
When the new photo licences were introduced in 1999, the DVLA tried to con everyone in to exchanging the old paper licence even if you didn't need to. What they deliberately didn't overly publicize at the time was the 10 year expiry of the photo and the ongoing renewal cost every 10 years. I held on to my paper licence which is still valid for another 20 years. No change of address and no driving offences ever, so they won't be getting hold of my money until I'm 70. However, I just read that if I make it to 70 without needing to exchange then it's allegedly a free exchange at that point.
Me too. Still have old style licence.
@@krpkrp3033 I read recently that paper licences won't be accepted for driving in Europe after January 19 2033. I don't think that will affect anybody with a valid UK paper licence who doesn't wish to drive in the EU.
Got me checking now …… thanks for the heads up.
Many thanks for watching Ian, sending our best wishes to you, Keith & Michele.
Hi Keith...Thanks for this as the same thing happened with me..I'd never have known unless I was told by somebody looking at my license for the purpose of identifying me....cheers buddy.👍

It was well publicised at the introduction of the photocard license that they will need renewing at a cost every ten years. I needed to renew my license due to moving home very shortly after they were introduced and at the time (it was £10) I said to people it will be a lot more by the time we need to renew it and it was just a stealth tax but I was told I was being stupid.
My paper licence was valid to 70 When I retired from the RAF I moved to Germany, cannot have new licence no UK residence, but I was issued with a US Army driving licence against my UK one. when I retired from that I received a German (EU) driving licence, took all of 10 minutes, on that it said Expire none . I have since changed that for a UK licence which in my case is 3 years.
Very useful info, especially as I have found a 2 yr difference.
Delighted you found our video useful Ian. Sending our best wishes, Keith & Michele

Your welcome. Best wishes, Keith & Michele
Thanks for the “heads up” - good information.
For those that still have a paper driving license only photo driving licenses are legal in the Channel Islands.
Many thanks for watching Mike & for sharing this information 👍🏻 Sending our best wishes to you, Keith & Michele.
Yes they suppose to get in touch with you (as per their website), I sent my renewal in by post and are still waiting!
A good reminder, thank you Keith… ✅ 👍🏻

This is interesting because I heard something to the contrary. There was a tv programme (I can't remember which one) that said if you have held a licence, you are not disqualified and you're within the normal expiry period of the 70th birthday you are legal to drive in the UK.
Just as a side note, I no longer live in the UK and my driving licence could not be updated because the DVLA system cannot cope with foreign addresses.
Hi Keith; just found you guys. Yeah, I had a similar experience with my photo-type driving licence. I believe it's only valid for 10 years; not because of the driving aspect, but because it is often used as photo ID. ie they like to see a "current" photo of you!
Thanks for watching Stan. Keith & Michele
Hi, you are correct, I expect some people are too stupid to realise and will think that an out of date photo identification means they shouldn't drive.
It is the photo that needs renewing not the actual licence.
Thank you.
My wife just told me she just renewed her licence when she got a reminder through the post.
One of the best videos yet.
Many thanks for watching roller13 & thank you for your kind feedback. Sending our best wishes to you, Keith & Michele.
Like you Keith, I was told by my Driving Examiner on passing my test, that I was good to go until my 70th birthday. After taking heed of your advice I now see that my licence expires 3 years before I'm 70. Thank you so much for sharing!!
Delighted you found our video useful Doug. Many thanks for watching. Sending our best wishes, Keith & Michele
The bad news is that your new license won't last for 10 years but will end when you are 70, so 3 years use only and they don't reduce the cost. Happened to me 2 years ago so I'll soon have to pay for another one in December! Plus the cost of an eye test (?) even though I no longer drive!
Thanks Keith - have made a diary note in case I don't get a reminder either!
Many thanks for watching Hywel, We’re really pleased you found our video helpful 👍🏻 Sending our best wishes to you, Keith & Michele.
Hi Keith, great informative video. I also had to renew my licence as 70 this year. I had the old paper one still so had to provide photo / passport number. I got a reminder 3 months before expiry date so i filled the form in and posted the information off straight away. I was panicking towards my due date as i still did not have my new licence, it took nearly 3 months to get it. You didn't mention if you have given up your grandad rights and not applying for a C1 licence. I haven't applied for mine as my campervan is under the maximum weight.
Many thanks for sharing your experience Robert, still got C1 licence, that doesn’t expire until he’s 70….some time to go yet! 😀 Sending our best wishes to you, Keith & Michele.
It really makes sense as it has a photograph if you pass when you are 17 you will look a bit different when you are 40.
Great video tho thanks for sharing
Many thanks for watching Kevin, sending our best wishes to you, Keith & Michele.
To make it even better, the writing on the front telling you when your licence runs out is so tiny you need a magnifying glass to read it. To quote the Germans from Fawlty Towers: "However did they win?"
Glad you pointed that out . Just checked my licence , I'm ok till 2023 phew . I've noticed also the date is on your photo to the left of your signature . Also you have to renew your licence if you move home .
Thanks for watching Robert. Best wishes, Keith & Michele
Same thing happened to me in the summer. I only found out the ten years had expired when I went to hire a car. I never got the reminder either.
Earlier this year I had to renew my old paper job for the new type. I decided to use my nearest post office that fortunately did them to get the picture, it cost a couple of pounds more but the post office filled in all the forms and it took 3 days for the new license to arrive.
Here in South Africa our license is only valid for 5 years, but provided you keep it up to date there is no age limit.
The only problem is that you need to go to the licensing dept. for an eye test. Which is where you run headlong into a lazy, incompetent bureaucracy which takes 2 months to produce the new one. Then you have to queue in the sun, wind and rain for 2 hours to collect it.
I'm on my 4th licence now. My first paper provisional, my paper car licence, my first photocard when I passed my bike test, and the replacement for that after 10 years. I'm due another licence next year, presuming we've not moved to fully online by then.
Good point, I think that it’s the photo that needs to be updated every ten years on either your passport or driving licence.
Many thanks for watching Twa Westies & thanks for sharing. Sending our best wishes, Keith & Michele.
I'm on my 3rd photocard licence now, which has annoyed me no end as my looks have hardly changed, and like you when I passed my test I was told I wouldn't have to renew until I was 70.
Same issue with mine. Noticed it earlier this year, ‘cos the DVLA never reminded me of the need to renew the photo. Until I acquired the photocard one, I had one of the old paper ones which would have been valid until 70 - 1 day. As you say, it was £14 online via credit card, and as I had renewed my passport within a year, I let them know the details so they grabbed it from the Passport office, so they are identical now. Technically, its valid a bit longer than 10 years from when it was taken for the other lot, by a couple of months, and it just shows the 70 -1day number.
Given when I did it online, they sent the new one presumably by first class post; almost all normal commercial traders use second class. Incidentally, I happen to know someone who is aware of the poor industrial relations in DVLA Morriston office at present.
The other oddity is that in some parts of the world, if you use glasses for driving, you need a spare set, but on passports, they don’t let you wear them, so they don’t turn up on a licence card done the way I did - although I do normally wear them.
Also worth noting that Passport renewals are now only issued for exactly 10 years - it used to be normal to ‘carry forward’ surplus months, and I always renewed early ‘cos many countries only accept them with at least 6 months left. So, it was a kind of back door tax rise.
I'm on my third photocard license since 2000 when they were "New". I got an extension last year because of the c*v*d restrictions, so I renewed late.
Great advice
Many thanks for watching Mr Shafique , sending our best wishes to you, Keith & Michele.
Thanks for this I was falling into the same trap. Especially since it doesn’t actually say ‘from-to’ just 4a, 4b. Fortunately I have a couple more years on mine.
Actually, it's not the licence that expires. It's the photo ID part that expires. I recently had to renew mine and they sent me a reminder letter. To renew online, you need a valid passport. If you don't have one, to to a designated Post Office and it'll cost you £21 instead of the £14 online fee.
You can also fill in a form and add a photo yourself and post it, as long as the size and brightness are correct.
Good tip, I didn't realise this, like you I assumed it lasted till I am 70.
Many thanks for watching PD Tech. Sending our best wishes, Keith & Michele
Same with motorbike entitlement..when licence sent away for update .eg photo..it comes back with entitlements missing ..and because you havent looked after the piece of paper you are given when you passed that test ..you have to resit that test and more all over again .....more stealth taxation...what nice people they are
We were aware of this as a Friend was told years ago by a police man as he was in an accident and he was close to his expiry date, so it put us on our toes x
Many thanks for sharing this experience Karen & thank you for watching. Sending our best wishes to you, Keith & Michele.
Question. Dvla are clogged up at present I am waiting for my licence I sent it off for renewal but they haven't sent me a new 1 can I still drive as online its saying its expired my car insurance says its fine I'm insured but I'm worried 🤔
Just checked and mine is out very soon - however the web page states that " to renew online, one needs a Valid UK Passport" and that is out too!
Just had to renew mine at over 70. Need a medical for caravans, lorries etc. Do a thorough check!
Another problem is that is when you get older you are suddenly limited to a car and caravan weight of 3500Kg. combined. This can limits your choice of a 4x4 and caravan for towing.
Thanks kieth never thought to check 🙄
Many thanks for watching Bill, delighted you found our video helpful 👍🏻 Sending our best wishes to you, Keith & Michele.
Also note that at renewal aged 70 if you want more than a basic car and motorbike license your need to get a medical and submit it in paper form for renewal. On line will only give you the basics.
Mine and my wife's were out by over a year. I didn't know there was a ten year limit. You would think they would send a reminder. It came quick though! We never got a reminder.
I still have the old paper type license. Have rented cars and never had a problem.
I still have my green UK driving licence. Im still good for another 17 years.
I have no plans to move home. I like it here.
You failed to say why it runs out. It’s simply that your photo needs updating, not much point having a photo that’s of someone at 20 when they are now 65, so needs updating every 10 years so that it still resembles the person it belongs to.
