This error dates back to the introduction of photo ID licences, a couple of decades ago. A friend converted to a photo ID licence, when they first came in, only to find his motorcycle entitlement had been removed and that he'd gained an HGV 3 entitlement, despite never having driven one in his life. He complained to the DVLA, who claimed that they'd made no mistake, so he decided to take some HGV driving lessons and took a job as an HGV driver.
I remember reading a story where a cop from the SEG driving group for royalty in london had this happen. No police letters made a difference and he had to retest again.
More important you need to keep your pass certificate. If you loose your pass certificate, you're stuck lol
I remember the police officer that this happened to one of many that dvla would not admit they had got it wrong despite solid evidence . The feeling is that the beaurocrats that run it don't like motorcycling and wish it banned so this is there back door way of pushing us off the road. Has been going on for decades.

Which coincided with their computerised system that also came out at the same time in 1999, there was loads of errors not just people losing motorcycle entitlement, it also happened with HGV and PSV licences….on the flip side people found themselves with entitlements they didn’t have previously
MCN reported on this 15 or 20 years ago - I remember because one affected individual was a motorcycle copper. He'd moved house, sent his licence in to change the address and DVLA deleted his entitlement. His force tried to reason with Swansea, but to no avail - and he had to take another test and he did it on the work bike, with a colleague as escort.
The worst about the whole subject is the DVLA's intransigence and refusal to assist or admit any culpability.
Your correct that did happen also some people were finding that when their license came back they had entitlements like HGV added.

This very thing happened to an older friend of mine. He had a full A license back in the day but hadn't ridden for a few years. Then he thought about buying a restoration project for something to do in his retirement, only to discover the DVLA had revoked his A license and refused to give it back!

You're right about "if this happed in France" all we do is bend over and and ask them to F**k us harder.
It's the way we've become over the years and they know they can get away with it.
That is exactly what happened to me, passed in 1985 and had to take CBT and both tests again in 2015! Apparently that year over 160 people in Hampshire suffered the same fate, totally unacceptable!
This goes back at least 20 years, I used to be chairman of the motorcycle action group (MAG) and we highlighted it back then. There was a case of a motorcycle cop being forced to take his test again because the dvla refused to acknowledge that he must have had a bike licence in order to qualify as a motorcycle police officer. We were also contacted by a motorcycle test examiner who had also had his motorcycle entitlement removed from his licence following a change of address. He was also forced to retake his test. We were aware of hundreds of people who were in the same boat but refused to retake their test and rightly so having already paid for it. It's not just licences either, I bought my current car a year ago and still haven't received the V5, the same thing happened about 3 years ago and all the dvla could say was "send us 25 quid and we'll send it to you" no chance, after the way they've behaved over the last 2 and a half years they won't be getting a penny out of me. According to them my car isn't registered to me but somehow they knew where to send the tax reminder?
At the training school I've just been to, they confirmed that. They said take a photo of your certificate, then encase it in a plastic sleeve and keep it somewhere very safe FOREVER! If you lose it, you will have to take the whole thing again. The police will not accept your licence, they will want to see your certificate. Don't keep it with you. Show them the picture, then take the certificate to the station and then back to its safe place.
That's been advice since the day that DVLA moved over to the digital database system and closed down so any local DVLA offices.
It's good advice, and has saved a few of us over the years!

Thanks for pointing this out, I didn't get a photo card licence until I was 70 two years ago. Various people were telling me I should have a photo licence, car hire for example, but I knew I didn't need to bother with one unless I changed my address or reached the age of 70. I had heard the horror stories about people losing their motorcycle licence after dealing with DVLA for some reason. So when I had to do it I enclosed a note in large letters that pointed out it was important that I retain my motorcycle qualification. Just checked my license now I know what to look for and everything looks fine. I passed my motorcycle test on Jan 1st 1969 but the license shows a later date. I guess that is the date when the system changed. I still have the motorcycle I bought after passing my test, currently being restored.
Same with mine Brian. I think it was 1975 when they moved from the red book licence to the paper licence.
Brian the DVLA never sent my licence back after a court hearing and endorsement. I later had another court hearing in the same court, and the DVLA after a lot of to-ing and fro-ing returned my licence with a 4 year break in the entitlement! During the break i renewed my HGV licence which in those days was a separate licence. I explained all this and showed the dvla fabrication licence. I won the case and got £120 court costs, but the DVLA would not admit their mistake, and there was a 4 year gap on my licence for years.
I got my full bike licence in June '69 and just coming up for 70 licence renewal and first photo one, i still my little red book but cant find my green paper one, i wonder if im going to have some "fun" soon?
@@littleworkshopofhorrors2395 It is highly possible. You really need to find your current licence. A possible tip is send to them while you are looking and apply for a duplicate as you have "lost your licence". Hopefully it should come back with the right entitlements. Then when renewing you will have that issue to Photocopy. Good Luck!

Exactly this happened to me. Passed my test many many moons ago, rode for years. Then kids and life came along. few years later after sending off for a change of address and DVLA mistakenly cancelling my licence as a 'hand back' it was returned and then I realised my Bike entitlement had vanished. I fought for years and never got it back - no record on the system. Even traced the instructor through the school - Nope, having none of it. Supply the pass certificate or take your test again. There are many victims of this, some got it returned, some not - who keeps their pass certificate - in fact I don't recall ever having it back from DVLA (you had to send them off back then) I now have a 125 and CBT which being 50 I had never done before. In our day you got insured, hopped on and held on. The ironic thing is, two years ago during COVID my car licence went off to have a photo update - 10 months of being told it was delayed 'due to covid' I called as I needed it to show work. Then I heard those words once more 'Sorry Sir, we have no record of you ever passing your driving test, you will have to apply for a new provisional and take your test again' - Only this time I seriously lost my sh*t. I did get the car licence back in the end, but a new licence, new driver number. Not fit for purpose - I would like to hear from anyone who has had similar as I think we should all get together and do something.
DVLA are an absolute disgrace. I passed my MOD2 test last July, submitted my license to the examiner (apparently this would be quicker), took them just over 11 Months to issue my new licence. I must have chased over 20 times and only when I finally logged a complaint with complaints ombudsman did it get sent out. No apology no explanation. Clowns of the highest order.
Like you Dan … I’ve only just noticed mine has disappeared… never rode a bike for years but thought why not get back in the saddle… only realised this when chatting to my old mate who has continued to ride bikes and not cars … DLV stinks no records
You don't or didn't get a pass certificate, when I passed my test in October 1997 the examiner sent off your certificate and you got your licence back , so latter on when I heard of this I wrote to my M P who wrote to D V L A under the freedom of information act on my file , still got my proof.

I fortunately survived the cull, and retain my motorcycle licence from a test taken when Harold Wilson was Prime Minister. I have heard from fellow riders that were removed for nothing more than a clerical error. They had to go through the mental torture of another test. Despicable.
I passed my test in 1988 and decided to get back into it this year after not riding for 30 years. The test was just going round a yard then nipping outside the test centre and doing an emergency stop on the road. My friend even fell off and still passed. I was told by DVLA that I had no licence recorded and I had to go through it all again! It cost me about £1,000 in total I guess but thank god I had to do it to be honest. I learned so much. I wouldn't have gone out and killed myself on a fireblade or anything but I reckon I'd have had a few low speed offs and dropped the bike at least. It was great not having to worry about all that using the school's bike. In fact I reckon you should never stop learning, and imo it's better to spend a couple of hundred quid doing a course than getting new panniers or a new exhaust or wasting it on bike bling. I've realised that just getting miles and hours under your belt isn't enough so I do motojitsu every weekend in a quiet car park. It's amazing fun and improves confidence no end.
You should join your local RoSPA group, you'll find it very enjoyable and rewarding I think. Around 50 quid a year and you meet a lot of interesting people and get to go out on observed rides where you get useful feedback and advice where to focus efforts to improve. It's all very relaxed, not like formal lessons. There's also a social side, ride outs where you can be confident you're not surrounded by maniacs and idiots plus you can take a test which offers a qualification worth having.
I did a similar thing. Car test May '75, Bike test (on a 250 twin) '82. I had to renew my licence for change of address, so photocopied both sides and got a couple of witnesses (usual "qualified people") to verify and sign the photocopies, photocopied the "evidence" and enclosed the lot in with the licence when I posted it to the DVLA. No problems on the return of my sparkly new licence. whooohooo!😁

A refresher course is something you probably would have done one as soon as you realised .I’m booking one in a month to do one .them I’m gonna do an advanced course .why because I’ve had a break and the people driving cars are the ones losing there entitlement to drive .bike ridersamong the safest on the road I’ve been riding for 38 yrs ,but I’ll still take a refresher course and I’ll be off road riding every weekend and hone that skill .even more .peace n safe riding .

I've kept all my certs, get a copy of my online license and take pics of my old card before it goes back to DVLA. I have A, B, BE, C and CE and I sure as hell don't want to have to redo any of them!
Good video sir. Same can be said for all categories, as I've heard people lose entitlements when they've had their addresses changed on their licences or updated their photos. As systems move to digital more than ever, we've got to double-check everything we receive.
I passed my motorcycle test in November 1979. I stopped riding in 1987. When my wife and I moved house in 2000 I sent my license (full class 2 driving license) away for change of address. Two year's passed and I never looked at my license. When I did, I had no motorcycle entitlement. It was gone. I contacted the DVLA and told them. They initial asked where I'd passed my test. I told them the test center had closed over ten years earlier. They asked me to prove who I was, which was a massive faff of getting independent entities like the post office (??) To verify who I was because I didn't have a passport. Long story short. They said they had no record of me passing a bike test on what at the time was a 250cc limit. They advised me retaking the test, which with all the steps it now needs. Over £1,000 back in the early 2000's god knows how much now..? I never bothered, which probably suited them fine. In my 60's now and don't care, but I've heard so many stories like mine over the last twenty years of stolen license entitlement.
Loving the retro spicy intro. I read an article where a bike cop who is more than that he's a bike cop trainer who moved house and when he got his licence back had his bike licence gone. Even when contacted by the police to confirm that he was an approved bike cop trainer they said no luckily for him the police had photocopies of his licence and he manages with great difficulty to get it back.
Happened to me.I passed mine in the 80's in Germany whilst in the Armed Forces. The test was carried out by an army Qualified Testing Officer. I sent off my certificate and got a UK licence with my entitlement on it. Well years later after converting my licence from paper to photo of plus a few house moves unknown to me my entitlement dropped off. I queried this with DVLA and they said they had no record. I sent them a copy of my FMT600 (army licence) they said it's not proof they could accept. They told me to contact my old test centre who may have a copy. That unit had disbanded late 90's so no record. Manning and Records supplied me with my old documents which included my motorcycle qualification but not good enough for DVLA. I was told I need to go through it all again and get tested 😤
The missing motorcycle entitlement thing also happened a few years ago, As a volunteer instructor I had a trainee who had to re take his CBT, Theory test, Mod 1 and then just before he took his Mod 2 he had a letter from DVLA telling him his Motorbike licence had been put back on his licence.
At the time he received no financial compensation for having to pay for the training he had to re take.
He should have filed a claim against the DVLA for damages in a small claims court. The DVLA has power but they arent above the law and as a citizen you should have every right to file a dispute or claim against them if you feel you have been dealt with unfairly.

I remember hearing about this a while back, pretty sure there were cases of people gaining entitlement they hadn't held as well, or losing one to have it replaced with another, one guy suddenly finding he had an HGV entitlement and another a full motorbike despite not taking the relevant tests.
Yeah I remember this happening back in the 90s when MCN covered it and the DVLA was refusing to admit their mistakes .
What I have done since then is to ask DVLA for a SUBJECT ACCESS REQUEST basically what information they hold on you in both digital and print form , I've always done this a few months in advance before my license was due to expire this way you've got proof of what entitlements you have/had on your license.

I don't recall giving a reason just a polite question asking for information they held on me .
Back in the day when this first came out you just wrote a letter with a self addressed envelope (stamped) and a five pound check now it's all online and I didn't pay a fee for it .
I don't think any company or institution can't deny you that information .

I am in the exact same position here. I passed my Motorcycle test back in the 80's and now I want a restoration project bike or similar, as I don't use my car that often nowadays, a bike would be handy to just pop to the shops etc and obviously a great deal more fun. (yeah, only during the summertime of course)
This problem of losing the Motorcycle entitlement is not unknown , I believe it started when the DVLC switched to photo id cards that they wanted to "Upgrade" every ten years for a fee of course. I saw this as a money making scam by the DVLC and so never upgraded to these rip off cards.
Now I'm hoping I won't be facing any issues when I get a bike and put it on the road..
My old paper licence clearly states what my entitlements are and as "upgrading" to a photo id licence was only ever voluntary and not compulsory I see no problems, unless anyone knows more on this subject.
However, I am in some doubt as to whether the licence in any form actually is a "legal document" in the true sense of the term. It certainly used to be, but this status has been diluted over the years by these bureaucrats who demand a periodic fee for continuation of those rights.
This has happened before with DVLA. I remember a few years back DVLA did exactly the same thing and there was a big fuss about it then. They obviously havent learnt anything since then.

This is concerning. I passed my motorcycle test in 1976, when there was just the practical test and questions on the Highway Code. No theory, parts 1 and 2, etc. When I become 70 next year, and have to re-apply for my licence, is my motorcycle entitlement to be taken away??? I was until fairly recently riding my 900cc Suzuki.
I can confirm that this happens as it happened to me in the 80s when I moved house. DVLA would only reinstate my licence if I could produce the original paperwork, you know the paperwork that you send to the DVLA to get the bike licence on your drivers licence. I had ro resit my test.
I heard about this year’s ago ( had a bike license from 1974 ) luckily I haven’t moved house since 1993
so just kept my paper license. Sold my last bike a year ago ( 65 years old) , but I even know police officers
that had that happen to them .
I passed my motorcycle test on my new Harley SST 250 back in '77. Moved up to a Heritage in'99 and looking forward to another next year! On the Gov site it says if you get a NEW licence your entitlements will be shown differently. I hope this doesn't happen when I have to renew my licence next April..... Good luck guys and ride safe.
This happened to me. Somewhere down the line my entitlement disappeared but as I was coming back to two wheels after 25 years I went through the DAS course anyway and was glad I did. Still a shock to find out by chance though.
This happened to me. 15 years of arguing with DVLA and it's got me nowhere. I have copies of both my CBT and full pass certificates and they have the test dates on their system, however they say I never had the entitlement added to my licence so it has expired. This is absolute garbage as it definitely used to be on my card until an address change. I refuse to pay to take the tests again for a licence I'm already entitled to, so there's a bike in my garage covered in dust
I originally past my test in 1986 and rode for a few years after that but then I moved around a lot and also went abroad for a few years. It wasn't until many years later while living in Kent and working in London I decided to go back on the bike, as the train travel costs were going up and up and between me and the wife we were spending over 11K a year just to get to work. Not thinking or checking my licence as why would you, while I was in a motorcycle dealer trying to buy a new bike, the sales man asked for my licence as I wanted to take a bike for a test ride. He came back rather sheepish and said "sorry sir you do realise that you don't have a motorcycle licence". You can imagine my surprise but after examining my licence on the back, not only had they removed my bike licence but also my HGV. In short I battled for seven months with DVLA to get my motorcycle licence back with to no avail. They demanded a copy of my pass certificates and old licence to prove I had passed my tests which I clearly didn't have from all those years ago. Then I had a brain wave and thought the test centre where i done my tests must have a copy, sadly where the test centre is now a super market car park. After some talks with a solicitor and the Police I decided that this fight was point less one and could be very costly with no guaranteed results, so I decided to go and do my motorcycle test all over again, and to be honest after passing both Mod 1 and 2 first time I didn't mind doing it except for the expense of course. There is a funny ending to this story I promise. When I passed my Mod 2 the tester (ex Police) asked me how long had I been riding, as I had no minors and was impressed with my skills, to which I said well since 1986. Then he asked for my licence as he needed to send it off but just as I handed it to him, he said "Oh...you better take a photo of the front and back, as I have heard people having their licences returned to them from the DVLA with incorrect details. Well you can imagine my look on my face, where I calmly said, "no shit sherlock, why do you think I'm here", which he replied, that's odd as you are the 10th person to tell me that this year (2012). I also know a mate of mine (who I used to ride with and hang around with in the late 80's) and after telling me him my story in a pub, he checked his and he had also lost his HGV and Motorcycle licence.
You should be able to check what licence details DVLA holds for you - I used to work in the car hire business, and we had to check every hirer's licence details online. If you search DVLA licence check, you should be able to log in using your licence number, National Insurance number and licence address and check what they have on record.
You can, I just Googled 'dvla share my licence information' without the quotes and the first link is to a UK Gov site. The system is set up so that you can share your licence information with an employer in a secure way. My work askes for this every year or so to allow me to drive their vehicles.
They've been doing this to people for years, I remember reading about it in the bike press probably around mid 80s.

I remember this being covered by MCN many years ago. A rider test examiner was also affected. He had been a test examiner for something like 20 years. He said to DVLA that if they don’t realise they have made a mistake they will have to remove the A category from the thousands of riders he had given a pass to in all that time. I can’t remember what the outcome was. I took my bike test in2004 and still have the pass certificate. I may also still have my car pass certificate from the early 80’s.
They lost mine 30 years ago and they told me it would cost a stupid amount of money to get it back about the same amount it costs to pass the test. I told them to keep it but i will still be riding my bike as i don't need to carry it on me for ID.
Same thing happened with Cat C and Cat D licences. (HGV and PSV). I held both back in the day, but as they have to be renewed every 5 years, if you leave it long enough you can't just renew late ... you have to re-take the test, including theory and the two part Class 2 then Class 1 HGV.
Passed my bike test in 1978, im 61 now had checked my licence last year and yep only had the 3 wheeler entitlement, dvla no record of passing test so had to do cbt ,theory,mod 1 and 2 ! Thankfully even though now and old dude managed to pass all first time and only did 2 day das course. I now have pictures of my once again full bike licence and safely stashed away certificates. Thanks DVLA quality service -NOT!
When going from paper to plastic licences thousands didn't check the entitlement and were getting stopped.
This was an issue about 6-7 years ago as I recall; people sending off for a license update (address/photo) and getting it back without MC entitlement - you would then need to provide your pass cert to prove you had the entitlement before!
I came across this problem a few years ago when people I know lost category A on their licences. What I also saw happen was DVLA trying to give me an LGV category I was not entitled to. I take photographs of everything before any dealings with DVLA and double check everything they send me. At the time of writing, Oct 2022, DVLA delays and incompetence has only improved from the dire post-lockdown 2021 situation in that occasionally they get things right or deliver on time. So still pretty useless but very unpredictable and it is always somebody else's fault, sometimes to the tune of several hundred pounds. Just as bad is that police, prosecution authorities and courts do what the public sector is best at: protecting the public sector. They persist in supporting the DVLA position of utter stupidity and incompetence.
Happened to me over 20 years ago when I sent my license in for a change of address, I queried it straight away and the attitude was tough, you’ll have to take your test again. Hadn’t ridden in years and wasn’t planning on getting another bike but it really pissed me off.
I share your concern regarding folk jumping straight back onto a big bike after taking their “twice around the block” test eons ago and thinking they can survive on today’s roads. From experience, I can thoroughly recommend a back to biking or enhanced rider course, usually run by most local training schools. I found the experience invaluable and so enjoyable that I return annually just to keep on learning. Luckily, my full A is still apparent on my license 56 years after taking my test.
The twice around the block test, where the examiner was on foot and couldn't see you for most of it, glad I did mine then.
While it was a bit of a joke, the system now seems deliberately made to put you off getting a bike.
One of my Nephews has ridding bikes since he was 16, he's done the CBT, the test for A1, the test for A2, (because he was too young to get an A licence) now to get an A licence he has to do another test, which will be near enough identical to the last except for the bike he rides.
@@medler2110 Yes, it’s certainly difficulty for youngsters nowadays but on the brighter side, there are some lovely bikes out there for them to enjoy, the choice is vast, even in the 125 cc class. Back in the the day it was either a bsa bantam, tiger cub or some other low villiers powered two stroke. At least your nephew can enjoy one of the vast range of A2 license friendly bikes. I ride an A2 friendly Yamaha MT 03 and it’s frisky enough for me.
I passed my test 48 years ago, and I have had bikes almost continuously since then. I've still got a paper licence, so they haven't had the chance to delete my category. I've survived by avoiding the high-powered modern sports bikes and sticking to what I know - both my bikes are 40+ years old, so we've grown old together (to be honest, I don't think I could fold my body up to get on a sports bike these days, anyway).

I heard this happening with 7.5t entitlement. Anyone who passed their car test pre 1997 has the entitlement to drive up to 7.5t trucks. For some older people the entitlement has been removed when renewing.
Happened to a mate of mine. He passed his motorcycle test in the seventies. When he renewed his licence, DVLA head removed the entitlement. He had to retake the test.
This has been going on for at least 40 years! Two of my mates had this happen in the eighties. One had taken photocopies fortunately, and after some buggering about got his back. The second had no evidence of either his license, of his pass certificate. He gave up, and started to race bikes instead. After hearing about this I ALWAYS take a scan of both my card license and the paper copy before sending my license in. If you have no proof of their mistake, they simply won't renew your entitlement.

My mate had the opposite, had a restricted bike licence, sent it off and came back with a full bike licence lol

I had a bike licence for 5 years before passing my car test in 1986. For twenty or so years I lived overseas and had a couple of bikes before returning to the UK. After retiring, I decided that I would get myself another bike. I realised my UK licence did not show my bike licence when I tried to purchase insurance!!! I thought I was going mad, the DVLA told me that there was no mistake and I had actually started to believe that I must have been riding without a valid licence for thirty years!!! I just checked my licence again and I have an HGV, yet I've never driven anything bigger than a transit!!! Now I have a bike that I cannot legally ride, and an HGV entitlement that I never earned but at least I'm not losing my marbles.
This has been happening ever since DVLA was formed. Always check.
I've known about this for years. When my Dad went from his paper licence to his photo licence he lost a few of his entitlements. Secondly, when I passed my bike licence last month the examiner insisted I keep my certificate very safe because of this reason.
This also happened to me about 8 years ago. I passed my bike are car tests in 1982. In 1983 I became disabled (left leg amputee); but I successfully argued with DVLA to keep my bike license. When my license was renewed about 8 years ago DVLA removed all my other categories except B (car license). After months of arguing with DVLA I successfully got all my previous categories reinstated including A (motorcycle), it was hard work though!
@@qtronicqilt8898 - Hi, yes I’ve started to ride again last year. But I can’t use a prosthetic and more and have to use a wheelchair. So I’ve got a trike with an Austin Metro 1275 automatic back end. It’s not fast but it’s fun :)

Happened to me back in the '80's and they wouldn't admit it was their fault but fortunately I had a record of the date I'd paid for my test and as this was before the onset of the DVLA and the test was under a regional authority they managed to find the original paper pass certificate before they went purely digital. Same thing also happened to a mate of mine and he wasn't so lucky and had to start again from scratch. NEVER let your license out of your possession. If the DVLA ask for it tell them it's mislaid.
It's hard to understand how they can just remove an entitlement and nothing can be done about it. I have heard it from several sources. Nice to see a bit of Hayling Island, used to have a park home down there but moved up to Lincolnshire. Sometimes wish I was back down there, thousands of happy memories of the place.
I passed my full class A bike test in 1999, and had it added to my photo licence. That licence runs until my 70th birthday, so has remained current since '99. The deletion of bike entitlement can only happen with the old paper "counterpart" licence when it's updated to a photo licence.
This has been going on since photo licences were first introduced. It's one of the reasons I've held onto my paper licence.
Agreed, passed my test in 1970 with the red licence, then replaced with the green paper one. It's actually in four pieces nowadays and haven't ridden for ten years but it's valid until next year when I'll be 70 so maybe get a photocard licence then and get back on the road!

@@fabianmckenna8197 When your 70 they only give you a licence for 3 years ,if your licence runs out a year before age 70 . The new licence only covers until the day before your 70th birthday ,a load of hassle for only a few months before another application is required . The object is obviously to get as many bikers off the road as possible ,buy making it as frustrating as possible to carry on riding .
I've got my green counterpart still, but it doesn't say what the entitlement is on there.
I took my test on a Vespa 150 Sportique in June 26th 1963 at Walthamstow test centre, at a cost of £1-00 passed first time. The best way to make sure you keep your driving entitlement is to say you've mislaid you license when it comes up for renewal that way you have proof that you have it. With me as with many others over seventy years old we need to renew it every three year's. Currently own a twenty year old Triumph Bonneville America a Vespa PX 200 Disc and a yes a 1962 Vespa 150 Sportique (not the one I passed my test on). The Sportique I passed my test on cost new £139-00 brand new in 1962 still have the receipt bought from Rena Motors Green Lanes Harringay London.
I'm in a group for motorcycle riders on Facebook and there was a whole thread on this, people sending off thier driving licences to find the motorcycle entitlement had been removed when returned. And yes they were told they would not put it back on and they would have to re sit all the tests !!! How can they get away with it !
This happened to me. I passed my test back in the late 60s and rode bikes until 15 years ago. I then got a letter from the dvla saying they had no record of me passing a bike test and had therefore revoked my license. I haven't been able to get it back since.
this happened to my Neighbour, he had to retake his test then a week after found an old license and was quite pissed off.
I’m glad I kept my pass certificates.
This has been a problem for years, it is the reason that all my licence renewals are done via a statement that I have lost my last one and need a replacement, if it happens to me I will 'find' the old version.
As others have said, this has been going on for a while. It happened to a friend of mine.
I kept my paper licence until I was 70 and then had no choice but to replace it with a photocard one.
When I applied, I said my old licence was 'lost or misplaced' so that I could keep it for evidence of my entitlement, but there was no problem as it happens.
I'm not a 'returned to bikes' rider though, been riding since I was 16 [75 now] and very seldom been without a bike. There was no CBT when I started, which upsets some insurance companies.
This doesn't just happen to Bikers, its has happened to HGV drivers, which means a loss of job, getting it back can be a pain, I always take photos of my old licence before I send it away. Although not sure if that's enough, but its something to fight them with, as is company records of licences held.
I remember this stuff happening a few years back too, I made sure to keep my test certificates just in case :D

Likewise. I reckon I've heard about this for at least 5 years. Entitlements mysteriously disappearing when you get it back after sending it off & then having a nightmare to get it reinstated.
Whenever I have to send my licence in, I always tick the lost box and then keep the old licence, I have 4 now😀. You can always 'find' it again later if you have this problem. I have heard of a photo or photocopy not being accepted as proof by those knob jockeys at DVLA.
I did the same. I scan copied mine before I sent it in for renewal after reading an article in MCN.
Take photo's of your pass certificate not your license. The certificate can be verified outside of DVLA databases, whereas they won't rely on a picture of the license itself as they could only verify it in the (incorrect) DVLA databases.
The other way is when you need to renew your license don't send your current one back just apply for a lost license then you at least have the original one.
Same thing happens to 7.5 tonner and towing grandfather rights sometimes, I know people who have lost those entitlements even though their job depends on them. I always scan my license and add a note saying I use my m'cycle and other categories regularly when renewing, so far so good. I do agree people should take a defroster course after decades off of 2 wheels, but not be forced to pay to take a completely new test.
This happened to my grandfather when he got his first photo licence. He did notice but did not care so did not object and he now has given up his car licence as well
This happened to a friend of mine, He got back into biking having passed his test decades ago only to discover his bike entitlement had been removed from his licence. And, his wife, who has never ridden a motorcycle in her life, found she had such an entitlement added to her licence! DVLA did not want to know.
Great video buddy, honestly, what a way to go, get at them mate, get at them. I don't know if your aware but it says "This petition was rejected" on the link I have just clicked on just now. Also, this is just a thought, send this video that you have made to DVLA both by every email there is for the DVLA and also a good old fashioned hard copy by popping this video onto a memory stick or an actual disc and send it to Swansea but "Recorded signed for" just to let them know that people are now on to them and they won't let this go, just so they know what you've done matey (and well done by the way, you have full backing by me my friend). Once they see as well though that you have 103K subscribers and it will keep on growing this is something they should be more mindful of. Also right, just to not sugar coat it to be very simplistic and brutal about saying it as it is, by them removing anything from peoples licences for that matter when they have successfully achieved and earnt it and spending money on lessons and tests, just not messing around with the truth, that is CRIMINAL, that is a CRIMINAL offence and I'll tell you why, because people have "SPENT MONEY" by feeding the pockets of the Authorities on tests!!! So in other words I'm saying to you that they have "THIEFED" - "STOLEN" peoples money..... That is the non-sugar-coating sour tasting raw truth of the matter, wake up and smell coffee people, that's it!!! They are CRIMINLAS, they have taken your money from you BUT are not giving you the service provided what you so innocently thought and KNEW that you have by successfully earning and achieving it. So if there refusing to put back onto peoples licence that they have ILLEGALLY took off and then I would be saying OK then, but I want a full refund then of the money I would have spent on lessons and test fees, but then the DVLA because of the Equality Act would have to do it for all them other THOUSANDS of people in the same boat that its happened to. They can't not, after doing it for one, that's it then, got to do it for the rest BY LAW by means and way of Equality. If this doesn't get resolved then I can see a movement coming along and happening, I can see coming all bikers sticking and coming together and bombing it down to the DVLA in Swansea to do a huge massive protest, making the news and the media and showing and exploiting the DVLA up for the CRIMINALS they are!!! This happened to me quite a few years ago, disgusting. I had to re do my licence, the DVLA were useless and denied everything. It cost me approx £300! I had sent my licence back due to change of address and got it back without the full bike entitlement. I didn’t keep the original pass cert ( who does?) the centre I’d passed at 15 odd years previously was no longer open and “apparently” the DVLA had no proof that I’d passed, all a real mess. If I learnt anything it was to keep copies of anything you send them.
My brother in law had the exact thing happen to him, his licence expired and he sent off for a new one. Didn't check the categories and carried on riding. It wasn't until he got stopped by the Police that it come to light and he got done for riding without a license when he had been riding since the 70s! No matter what he told the DVLA or the police they were not interested. He was so angry about it all that he tried all avenues to get it back, but in the end gave up riding due to the bureaucracy.
When my licence come up for renewal I didn't send my old one off so I had proof of the entitlement categories.
Basically when you are dealing with a government agency you are screwed!
DVLA also had a computer glitch at one point where they lost the details of thousands of licences , always take pictures , photocopys of your licence before sending them
As others have said I think this problem actually dates back to the switch over to photocard licences. I passed my test in 1978 and I am still credited with a full A licence valid from then until 2031 when I will be 70. I renewed my licence again earlier this year with no problems. I think most people that lost their A licence probably did so a few years ago at the switch to the photocard type of licenece but didn't notice as they weren't riding at the time. I haven't heard of any significant problems along these lines since then. I stopped riding in 2004 and came back to it in 2019 as a hobby when I retired. I just did a voluntary 1 day refresher course and then got straight back on with no problems. It all comes back very quickly once you get going again.

I've had this happen to me when changing from paper to plastic license, but didn't know it until I went to ensure a "new" Bike I bought and the Insurance Company told me I didn't have a bike License... phoned DVLA and explained and then wrote to them showing copies of my Motorcycle Insurance right up to 2016 for my previous bikes...they told me their database only goes back to your previous digital plastic License, all other physical Files have apparently been destroyed , they went on to say if I would like to send in my Pass Certificate they would happily add it to my License... I passed in May 1986 whilst serving in the R.A.F and have moved 35 times in the intervening 36 years, and worked as a courier and as a Motorcycle instructor in the 90's .
So my BMW K100RS is now sat in my garden until I can save enough money to book a test.
They have also removed my category "C" Truck driving category that I qualified in back in the early 90's when I worked for Excel Logistics ......that doesn't bother me as much because I don't intend to drive trucks again.
I am 57 and got back on a bike after 30 years earlier this year - thankfully my licence is all good but what I did do was choose a modest bike to start with (CB500F) and I took a day refresher course with an instructor which was very beneficial

I knew someone this happened to. He passed his HGV test, sent in his licence and it came back with no Motorcycle entitlement. He contacted them straight away and he was told there was no error on the system. He had to send in his pass certificate to confirm it. The stupid thing is he hasn't got his pass certificate as that is what you need to send to get your licence. So DVLA actual have his cert, not him. The same for me. I don't have my certificate either, it was sent in when I passed my test.
This problem has been around for years. People have tried to ask DVLA to verify what entitlements they have on their licence before sending them in for a change, but DVLA said they can't do that??? It is Madness. And don't forget, photos, Scans or copies are no good, they want the original document!!! So it is impossible to send in the same document twice.
I passed my bike test in January '92. I was in that group that had grandfather rights from my car licence and didn't need to do the CBT. However, my insurance company insisted I do the CBT. My application to take the "practical test" included a box to add the date of the CBT. It was just less hassle to do the CBT and, to be fair, I got a lot out of it. Anyway, I've always kept a copy of my licence, be it a photocopy, scan or a photo. There has been a plethora of stories about the DVLA getting things wrong. Personally I've never lost a category from my licence but they have lost medical letters regarding my LGV entitlement which delayed the issue of a replacement by 3 months. Their excuse was that as *I* didn't have proof that I'd sent it, there was no proof of delivery.
PS How does one keep the certificate? Both for my car and bike tests, I had to send the certificate to Swansea. I only have my HGV certificates because the examiner told me he could do the update online so long as I gave him my photo-licence.
There was a petition for this but it seems the link I was given was not successful. I have now removed the link to avoid confusion.
Could this be a simple error that dvla don’t want to admit to?? Or could it be the fact people legally have to re-sit a test like u have to in a car after so many years

Hey mate I had the same thing with my 7.5 ton entitlement from my licence acquired in Nov 13 ,1990.
I was put on a 10 year licence in 2000 through ill health and when i looked at it the only thing missing was the 7.5 ton entitlement ,
Oh.....and the ability to tow with a Van upto a vehicle gross weight of 3.5 ton ...

This is nothing new to us older bikers ! .A bike cop who was in our bike club had the same thing happen to him ,his commanding officer was involved ,his police union rep & his local M.P. but to no avail he had to take another test . And yet one of the guys at our local tire garage bought a bike off me & admitted he had never taken a bike test ,it was added - on after an address change . My ex wife at 18 y.o. could never master a cars gears so took her test , in an automatic ,on arriving back here it said she could drive a manual ,even though she had never driven more than a couple of miles in one . A place like the D.V.L.A. should never have been privatised ?.
Who the hell doesn't make copies of important docs these days or indeed keep originals like pass certificates safe??!!!!
Can happen in the USA as well. Check those cards before leaving the DVM/MVA office. I don't even stand up out of the chair without double-checking.
Happened to me after moving house! Was also told because I had passed my motorbike test before 1975 (I had separate car and bike maroon licences at the time for those who remember) and all licencing data prior to 1975 had been removed, there was no record to prove I had ever had a bike licence. No come back, no appeal, no licence! So had to retake my test by doing the whole CBT, theory, Mod 1 and Mod 2, around £800 total I think it was. Worth it mind. Photo copy your licences now guys!!!

DVLA still don't keep a record of your passing any CBT or bike test, they rely on other people telling them as much, and still no ability to appeal an error on their part.
Wow, passed mine 1970 and still have my green paper licence which replaced the red one. Not ridden for ten years but tempted to renew next year at 70 and get out again!
Exactly the reason I've kept my old paper licence. Plus 7 ton lorries ,trailers, tractors and more.
I was a DAS instructor back in 2006 and a lot of our students were doing their bike test as they'd renewed their licence and not noticed that DVLA removed their bike entitlement. The first most of them knew about it was when they got stopped by the Police for whatever reason and the Police pointed out they weren't entitled to ride a bike. None of them had managed to persuade DVLA they'd actually passed their test many years ago. DVLA would only accept their original pass certificate or a photocopy of their old licence showing their entitlement as proof of previously passing their test.
In the USA you have to pay extra money for your motorcycle license and physically acknowledge that part on your renewal paperwork if you renewal is online it gives a pop up saying that you currently show your endorsement do you wish to pay more for the endorsement or cancel it for less
I had exactly the same thing happen to me, I took my test in May 1985, I had been riding thinking I had a licence, but when I checked it I didn’t have the bike category.
Cut a long story short I had to retest in 2010.
I know someone who gained a full bike licence on his .This is why I always keep my old one tell them you have lost it anything but send it back
My husband (64) had this problem back in 1986, he passed his test in 1975 but hadn't had a bike for a number of years. In early 86 he bought a lovely Bonnie 750 but when checking his licence he noticed that the code wasn't on it. He phones the DVLA (no emails back in the day) and after being past from one department to another he gets told very helpfully that maybe it got lost when they transfered everybodys info from paper to computer files and they could do nothing about it and if he wanted to ride again he would have to take the test again, which at that time was a two part test, round some cones in a carpark, then like the old test, ride round a set couse with the examer jumping out in front of you for your emergeny stop, he past no problem.
This happened about 15 years ago when the DVLA swapped to a new computer system. It also affected truck licences as well as bike licences.
It was on one of the complaint TV programs with Ann Robinson, they went to the DVLA with loads of proven instances of this happening and they (DVLA) then finally started waking up to it.
But till then thousands of people were affected, there was even a trained motorcycle police pursuit officer who was very high up and trained police riders who lost his entitlement when he moved house and even a letter from his chief constable was ignored by them (DVLA) and he had to retake his test.
Turned out the categories were deleted when people were moving home etc, as back then you had to send your old licence in, but didn't check when they got them back immediately, then went it came to light, it was too late.
Always double check and have photos and copies of your licence. I keep these on my phone for euro trips (along with copies of all my other docs), just incase...

A few years back it was reported that a motorcycle cop renewed his licence only to find it not included on his new licence . When he got back onto the DVLA to enquire,he was informed that they had no record of him ever passing a motorcycle test . Apparently even after his own chief constable backed him up ,he still had to retake his tests . On the other hand there are cases ,of drivers who have never owned or ridden a motorcycle being given full motorcycle entitlement on their full car licences at renewal time . I have even heard a case of a full car & motorcycle licence holder ,been given a class 1 heavy goods licence instead of his full motorcycle licence entitlement . The DVLA just seem to tell them be grateful for what they are given & not interested in any complaints . I seem to remember the MCN mentioning this subject back in the early 2000 ‘s about motorcycling entitlement disappearing off some bikers licences .
Had this happen recently to a couple of guys I know and work with and they aren't even on grandfather rights just lost it completely when it came to renew his card, one also lost his HGV entitlement.
I can't believe DVLA are still doing this. They first started getting it wrong when photo licences came in. If I ever have to send my licence back for any reason I always scan it, keep a copy of the scan and e-mail the scan to DVLA before I send it. Once I have acknowledgment of my e-mail and its contents, then and only then do I send the licence.

This often happens with a change of address; the DVLA did not retain the pass slip that you sent in for your full licence back in the day so there is no way of proving you passed your test. How many people would have thought to get a photocopy of their pass slip prior to sending it off, I didn’t. When I surrendered my old paper licence for the photo version I went into a solicitor and had a certified copy of it made, signed by the lawyer as proof I had previously held full Cat A. Thankfully I had no issues, but I have heard of individuals getting their licences back with a full Cat C entitlement minus the Cat A.
They (the DVLA) were at it 30+ years ago. Several of my mates received licences without their Category A entitlement when switching licenses or to photo cards. Having heard their troubles, any driving licence I apply for now, includes a promise that I will drag their arses as far as a court if "any" of my earned and paid for entitlements come back missing. So far, no issues. Thankfully.
Mine wasn’t my motorbike licence stolen, but my 7 tonne and minibus entitlement! Apparently now I have to pay for a medical to get them back.
Shockingly, and far more worryingly, the opposite has also happened, with licence holders who have never even been near a motorbike suddenly gaining a full motorbike licence from 19.01.13. This is an even bigger cover up than the McCann case.
This was about long ago, we kept hearing of people who had sent of there licence for address change ect only for the bike category to be missing. After that it was " I've lost my licence can I have a new one". Wait until it turned up and check categories, then you suddenly found your old paper one and sent it back...
Just found out this has just happened to me, passed my test in 2012 and have been riding big bikes ever since oblivious to the fact I no longer had a licence!
