- It's so easy to get ripped off when obtaining your C1 Driving Licence... watch this video to avoid spending too much money gaining a C1 Licence. I explain the process I took to complete my C1 Licence allowing me to drive vehicles up to 7500kg. Below is a list of websites I used to achieve my C1 Licence.

Great video explanation, even for those that don't need it. Well done. And also gives an insight into "driver training" - we should all be trying to improve our driving, whether it's RoSPA, IAM First, HGV or PSV - or whether we have pre-1997 licences or not. Driver training is the most important thing. Oh, and nice New Defender Lego Technic by the way! Cheers.
Thank you. Found this video helpful. My C1 provisional has just come through (booked my medical all by myself) and looking at studying for the theory/hazard perception and then booking the lessons and test! (I'm joining London Ambulance Service)
Interesting video Shaun, my first driving test way back when was for any army tank ‘h’licence. So I got all the old entitlements. Looking forward to your new adventures in 2020👍
This was super helpful!!! I did all you said and it was easy and straight forward.👌🏻
Great video, I am glad it was "very wordy", great presentation and very informative.
Thus has really put me at ease as I've just started revision for my c1 theory test
This is so helpful. Thank you, x
Well done mate looking forward to see why you did the c1 👍👍😎
Very useful video, I have my C1 licence, having passed my test in prehistory, but I often get questions on how to get a C1 licence. I'll refer them to this video Thanks, Shaun.
Thanks Bob
Great video. Thanks mate.
Lots of useful information, even after 2 years. Thank you! All the best
Thanks for watching 👍
Excellent video- really useful . many thanks
You have just explained what people want to hear. It's hard to find all the information needed and you have covered it all in simple terms. I pitty all those that have to go through this farce as I have grandfather rights but still think over 21 the entitlement should be automatic.
Thanks Michael
Congrats on passing your C1. Lucky me I'm that old to have the former licence and am already allowed to drive up to 7.5 tons. However - if I'd really have to drive a HUGE one, I might take some lessons just to make sure I could handle it and not be of danger to anyone out on the streets. Suggestions on why you took your test....? .... maybe you've had some offers on trying out some of those "beasts" and vlog about it? Wouldn't want to miss that!
Best wishes for passing 100 %
Great informative video. 👍👍👍👍
I hope your new bigger motorhome
will be truly wonderful for you all
🌟😊😊🐕🚐🌟🌍
Amazing, thank you so much for this. Saved me loads of time and probably money 💰 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Well done, I passed my driving test in 1987 so didn't need to do a separate test for driving upto 7.5t! I did start HGV but unfortunately caught a bad cold and couldn't do the test😢 not been able to afford it since, however I do have the shorter wheelbased Iveco to the one you learnt and passed in😊
Hi mate. I watched this video in feb of this year (2022). Followed your links, booked my courses and today passed my C1 for my motorhome! Thanks for the video, it was my single point of info for everything. Just thought you’d like to know. Cheers, Simon, Swanmore, Hampshire.
Oh that’s great news. Huge congratulations and thank you so much for the lovely comment. Enjoy your motorhome travels 👍
Thank you mate for this
super helpful, thank you
Well done, do i see a bigger van on the horizon, gc680 perhaps. Good to see you back
Thanks for the info 👍🏼
Brilliant,thanks for everything.
A useful guide. Everyone should go on and do a larger vehicle test, if just to appreciate the differences a bus or lorry driver has to compensate for - and to learn some new road craft.
Yes maybe so ! But normally the difference in size between a 3.5 t and 4t Motorhome is nothing and normally just a paper exercise
thank you for a very helpful video
Thank goodness mine came free with my car licence in 1985! Got the minibus included too.
Same here, the only restriction is the 101 code 'not for hire or reward' (to make a profit). To get that removed you have to do a driver CPC.
You can drive a three wheeler like a Reliant or a Morgan. Today's drivers have to pass a full motorcycle licence to drive them.
My old person's licence allows me to drive a bewildering array of vehicles. If I do have to drive anything approaching 3.5 tonnes, I will certainly consider lessons.
In the Netherlands it is much easier, just contact a local driving instructor and pay him 1200 euro`s and you have your official licence (2x witten exams, 8 hours practice on the road and a final exam).
Thank you for Explaining
Cheers, very useful !
I always follow your videos
You’ve inspired to get my first new 6.1 but I’m now concerned about the growing bans on diesels in cities across Europe and U.K. Be just my luck to get it and find restrictions on usage. It would be my daily vehicle. Bristol just banned all diesels and others considering following. What are your views on this and is it something that concerns you? Thanks
Can I ask would you go for the Grand Californa next and which one would have if you did.I am going to buy one this year but I cannot make up my mind. The grand or the Ocean.
That was tremendously useful. Thank you so much. Thankfully, I have a pre 1997 licence, but I want to convert a 7.5 tonne box van into a motorhome and have my son as a second driver. He is post 1997, so will need the new category. Again, thank you.
In the same boat bud. Looked online and contacted a few companies and was quoted £1600. Looked into what the course actually provides and realised I can do alot myself. This video has confirmed my thinking. Thanks man, you're about to save me a tone of money.
Glad it helped. Good luck with it all 👍
@@ABusAndBeyond cheers man
Sounds like the Grand California 680 coming your way 😎
Absolutely brilliant video! I was really unsure of the process and had found a few of these companies who do it all for you for crazy prices - I'm based in the South East so will definitely be using Hitch and Tow for the lessons and test. Thank you so much for sharing all of this info.
You’re very welcome. Thank you very much for watching. Unfortunately I think Hitch and Tow have ceased trading now which is a real shame.
@@ABusAndBeyond Weird! The link re-directs you to a website called 'Drive Sussex' - hopefully they just changed names? Eitherway, Drive Sussex looks like a good option!
Very helpful, this C1 requirement has always confused me as being unnecessary. Fortunately I passed my test before 1997.
Very good and helpful video
glad I got my full licence back in the day where I have access (and driven) vehicles up to 7.5 ton and can tow trailers / caravans
Very nice video thanks for support
Thank you!
Awesome thanks for that
congrats on that well done
@A Bus And Beyond Great video! I've filled out the D2, booked my medical (same week) with the company you recommended, for £55, way cheaper than my gp who wanted £90.00. Great tip about applying for all the entitlements! I'll be doing my theory and hazard perception shortly. Question: do I need to do the CPC case studies and CPC practical demonstration for a C1? Or just the driving ability test which costs £115?
Hi, thanks for watching. If I remember correctly the CPC stuff is only for Ambulance drivers and other commercial drivers so I don’t think they’ll be included in your exam. It’s been a little while since I did it now so I can’t be 100% sure but I’m almost certain I didn’t do any of the CPC case studies
yay for my old git license.. i guess you need C1 for either a VW grand Cali or a recovery truck for your defender
Your "old git" licence expires on your 70th Birthday regardless of when you passed the test
thought you require a medical after 70
Is the test done at VOSA test centre as before? And do you need to repeat the medicals every so often? What about the CPD requirement?
I can feel a motor home is on the horizon!
Very informative video. I passed in the 1970’s because I am extremely old 😄 If anyone asks about this I will send a link to this. 👍🏻 Trev
Um Grand Cali per chance?
Well Done on getting your C1. I have got my theory & hazard cd rom today. I have been wondering whether to go straight for my category C so I get the C1 Entitlement automatically. The only thing thats stopped me is the cost.
Got all mine in the 70s and it amazes me, just how bad some younger drivers are, when they have to do all the above to get a licence!!!!
Word of warning, watch out for drivers medical companies, a few of them have been revoked by the dvla now and the medical is not been recognised by them.
So how long did it take for to learn the theory before going to take the test? Nobody is talking about this.
interesting, but passing your test before 1994 you must to say in this country because after 14 years living in UK this rules doesn't work for me but I have provisional licence C1 which I think mean nothing,do you know if this it's right? thanks nice video
Good luck with the new license & the possible new motor home ;-). Have you been off road in the Defender yet?
Thanks. Yeah sure have, went exploring Salisbury Plain yesterday!
Its DVSA not DVLA that sets the questions or have the test centres. However, why didnt you just go in for Cat C?
thanks for making this video, absolute wealth of info! Quick question though, can I go ahead and do my theory before I get my provisional?
I think you need a provisional to book your theory as far as I can remember. Thanks for watching 👍
Did you have to do part 2 case studies? Also prior to your practical?
Which vehicle u used on test day ?
Hi Shaun Lizzie and lovely Bentley are you going to be at the NEC on the Friday 21st of next month?
With regard to your mention about putting on your provisional license application to get all the categories, there may be a limitation on timescale. I'm not 100% certain about this, but when I had a provisional license (so many moons ago I have them all anyway), it was only valid for 2 years. If that is still the case, anyone getting those categories would have to take their test within 2 years or lose the right to be able to drive those categories as a learner.
Hi. If I passed my Cat B test in 1992 and I am wanting to add Cat C to my driving licence am I right in thinking I do not need to take the Cat C test and I just have to apply for Cat C using the D2 application form and send that with a D4 medical. Whereon the application form do I have to tick to indicate I am entitled under grandfather rights to automatically have Cat C put on my licence. Basically I want to become an hgv driver. Basically as far as my knowledge goes the route I think I am going to take is apply for Cat C using a D2 form send that with a D4 medical get Cat C provisional, take CPC (No need to take test as passed Cat B in 1992) send CPC proof to DVLA and get full Cat C? I'm really looking for guidance on that. Many thanks.
Nice one Shawn good advise shocking that u can save all that money by doing what u did good sound advise there
Kev
Yay, My license is pre 1997, I therefore have the right to drive 7.5 tonne trucks, I actually had a temp job as a recovery driver for a couple of months, but did it at a time when there were no tachos, drivers were doing upwards of 14 hour days!!
Not for me... I have bought a 2001 MAN L2000 so am in the same situation as you. I have been making enquiries about a refresher as I don’t need to do a test, also 9 m is long enough for me!!
So an interesting video thanks for pointing out the dangers of being ripped off, all I want is a bit of theory, and a refresher!!
Congratulations
Was just about to push the button on 2 grand for this. Thanks man!
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching
i dirive a 7.5 t0n wagon (grandads right ) i also tow a caravan do you not have to take a c.p c. course like i do
CPC is only required if you want to use the C1 license commercially
This is an incredible video, thank you!
Would be interested to know if anything has changed in the last 3 years.
As a non-driver who has a long term goal and a dream, it has terrifying shown me what to prepare for which I needed haha. Won't put me off but damn I'm going to need a LOT of lessons!
In Hampshire currently if anyone has any suggestions, cheers 🤞🏽
Any idea if you'd need a C1 for a pickup truck? You know those ones that look like a normal van at the front but at the back it's flat and a car goes on it?
No not required for pick up
It amazes me, how detailed it is today to get a driving licence for different catagorys and how bad the drivers are when on the road?
Hi just asking maybe a daft question I have C1 and I think C1 + do I need to go through this process I have D1 on it as well
C1 is basically the large van/ small box truck type of vehicle. D1 is a minibus which I think is 9 seats and over. We have a 7 seater VW T5 which my wife drives on her standard car licence.
Great video Shaun. Quick question. Do you now have the C1 entitlement until 70 years old. My wife is considering taking C1 as she passed post 1997 but I keep seeing that it only lasts until 44 or 45 then you have to retake every year?
Hi there. I looked into this today and it looks to me like mine lasts 5 years until I’m 44 and then I have to renew it every year from the age of 45. I don’t think I have to retake the test though, I just have to send off a renewal form. Once I reach the age of 70 I have to renew my medical as well. I think I’ve read that right
@@ABusAndBeyond that’s the bit I wasn’t sure about. It’s not really clear anywhere if you have to take the test every year or like you say just send off a renewal form, even on the dvla web site. If it’s a re test every year then if we uprate our van I’ll be doing all the driving as I don’t think my wife will want to do that every year! There is talk of the Gov upping the basic weight limit from 3.5 to 4.25 at some point but goodness knows how long that will take to come in🤷🏽♂️
I have grandad rights no body taught me to drive a 7.5 ton how come some need a test now to do what I learnt myself ?
Hi can anyone help me plz, I’m going to do my c1 license. When I hopefully get it, an I able to tow a caravan as long as the max weight with car and can isn’t over 7,500 kg?
Hi Paul. If you can afford to do a C1 license, you may as well skip it and do a full C. Only the size of the wagon is different. Everything else is the same - medical, theory etc.
To answer your question, you need to do a B+E license for towing a caravan that makes your train weight in excess of 3.5t and below 7t. A C1 will only let you tow 750kg over the 7.5t (making the train weight 8250kg).
I hope that helps.
Hi,why did you not go for your class 2(C1) considering it wasn't going to cost much more?
I assume you mean C? Because it was double the price to do that and I don’t need it
The provisional entitlement only lasts for a few years its not a permanant thing you do have a time period mine runs out next year for C1
If you want your C1 license do your C as the C1 is included and you are then entitled to drive up to and beyond 18t rigid trucks. Which could be a big camper or even a job opportunity if you're that way inclined.
When I looked into that it worked out quite a lot more expensive to do the C license
@@ABusAndBeyond fair one, it's been a while since I did my license and the prices have changed a bit.
it's kinda funny because I'm planning to drive my 4.2t van (that's been downrated) to the training centre to learn how to drive my own van that's actually bigger than the one ill be taking the text in...
Hi please send me questions theory test C2
I passed my test in 74 so I qualify.... but I'm too knackered to benefit as far as employment is concerned. Mind you.. a decent motorhome would be nice 🤔
Hawkeshead brewery! Yes! 🤟
Thankfully passed in 1994!
Congratulations Shaun. Is Lizzie doing it as well?
Maybe at some stage
Good video but I now feel old 🤦🏻♂️😂
We can all feel safer on the roads following all this form filling.. I suspect international visitors are exempt. Are there Brexit implications?
Yep ... mine came free when I passed in 1975 LOL
Your buying a Grand Cali 680...(?)
If I had gotten my driving license at 25 I'd not need anything but I had it at 26 n limited to car only 😞
I recently got my C1 license which am so happy about and need it for driving Ambulances which is my dream job to do work for the ambulance service so now got my C1 license am a step closer to getting my dream job
Hi. Really good informative video. You're so right about watching the prices, not so much Google but the companies who want your money more than anything. I'm fortunate enough already have the license as I'm an old git. But seriously I'd heard about these companies that take as much money as they legally can. So it really is worth checking every option. Regards Luke.
I've got my C1 practical test on Monday... Wish me luck 😬
Good luck Donna!
@@ABusAndBeyond thank you... I PASSED!!! 😁
@@harrietsmammy2661 Fantastic!!
👌
Thank you Sean. I now know that I never want to get my C1 licence. I will stick to under 3.5 tonne vehicles 😂
OMG. Just read the other comments and checked my driving license. I am so old - I have it!!!!! 😄
The Hitch and Tow company apparently has closed down now due to gov't issuing B+E categories without test
Oh that’s such a shame.
He doesn't include the CPC exam which costs £400
I didn’t include it because I didn’t need a CPC qualification as I’m driving a motorhome.
@@ABusAndBeyond ahhh, I see. Ok mate. I did it as I will be driving a 7.5 ton lorry for hire and reward. Nice video btw!!! I have my test on the 9th of July so I hope it goes well. Having failed my class 2 twice I have decided to do my 7.5 ton lorry license and driver a 7.5 tonner for a while and then retest for my Class 2. It will be a 1 day training driving a 5 ton Iveco Daily. So it should be just like a car I hope so. Hope it all goes well.
A long process to get your C1 but the click of a second at midnight into your 70th birthday and it’s gone 😭
It's only the medical part that is required to retain it though I believe
@@ABusAndBeyond i you apply for it with a new med you can keep it same for hgv
I loved you videos of your travels when you first started out, but your channel seems to be more about reviews/advertisement nowadays. Are there anymore travel videos coming up or has the direction of your videos changed for ever?
We have big travel plans coming up!
A Managon must be on the way. I sense far off the beaten track travelling.
Now I'm looking for Lego defenders. DAMMIT, focus.
Well done too many brokers ripping us taken our money.
