  • Another day on store deliveries. This time 2 runs with different trailers. On my second delivery the instructions clearly stated to reverse it in from the main road, but probably only with a long trailer (as it was not specified). As I had an urban trailer, I did some unnecessary spins to finally reverse it back to the delivery point.
    Another successful store delivery done

Just finished after 50 years of HGV driver. Treat like a Dog and spoken to like an Animal. Best of luck its not the Job it use to be. 4 on 4 off, you only get a weekend off every 6 weeks. Your always at work when your family and friends are off. and your wrong Tanker Drivers earn a lot more than Delivery Drivers, And even that gone down by about £8 an Hour.

I was scared shitless through my first driving lessons too, but like most things you grow used to it. I passed for my truck + trailer in september last year, switched back to my previous employer, and do occasional runs now locally while still working at the yard full time. Just gotta wait it out until a truck becomes available to me.
I'd say try it again, you might just get used to it.

Bit of a dicky thing to say really. And that’s exactly the type of talk that puts people off doing the job.
You’ve got to try your best to get the experience and if planners/transport want to send new drivers to awkward places that’s their issue. Everywhere you go there’s good and bad stores, sending a new pass driver to a bad store is incompetent (as usual for planners).
Drivers are supposed to look out for each other and we’ve forgotten that.

Food service was the worst work I've ever done. When you turn up to a pub in the middle of a small town, nowhere to park so you completely block the road, with a full cage of loose bottles of spirits that you can't push up to the door because there's no dropped kerb and they just sit there watching you make 20 trips cos you can only carry 4 bottles at a time. Sometimes 15 hour shifts. No help, just throw the keys at you with no idea where you'll be going. Fuck that shit.

I did Aldi Coulsdon and the instruction was to call an hour before arrival. I did this but the girl I spoke to didnt pass the message on. It turns out that they need this time to put cones out in the carpark as you have to drive into the car park and screw right around to get onto the bay. So when I turned up there was a line of cars parked across the turning circle. Ended up waiting until each one had loaded their shopping then put a road cone in that space, then sit back in the cab until the next one came out and repeat for about 15 cars. Then get on the bay, tip yourself, put 33 pallets in a space big enough for 10 pallets and job done.

Depends on the bus and the lorry combo - a normal swedish bus has a pretty large overhang in the rear so if you don't plan ahead and watch your mirrors
you will side swipe a sign, another bus or a car or a truck WHILE driving forward....
A normal 25 m comb scandinavia lorry doesn't have that behavious, and so while at least going fw they are a bit easier - but think about weight. If the road edge is weak stay away from them....

Best deliveries are always the ones where they stand and watch you spend 10 minutes reversing in to a tight yard, then they tell you they want it on the other bay right on the other side of the store.

Worst store deliveries I’ve ever done are the express/smaller stores in towns. Got told to get there at 6am as the car park will be empty at that time. Backed it onto the bay, they were short staffed so one guy on his own unloading and me, took over 2 hours to tip. By the time I got back into the cab, car park was full, barely any room to get out and lots of SUVs.

I do store deliveries for Aldi. Day work. Its an easy job, 1 run with 1 store in the Moring and one run with 1 or 2 stores on the same trailer in the late morning/early afternoon. Self tip at store which is easy enough and load any empties on. Hardest part but you get use to it and becomes normal is some of the bays, a lot in small tight car parks and blind sides. Some cant handle the reversing and have wrecked cars but it is what it is, if your not comfortable with tight reverses its not for you. im doing about 40k-45k a year with minimal hours compared to the typical "HGV Driver hours" and I work 5 on 3 off.

The stressful bit is when other cars don’t want to wait and let you turn…..they try to get in between you or come in behind you when you are reversing….so you have to constantly look and wait and stop for them which takes longer and eventually holds up more traffic

I haven't done store deliveries since I started driving trucks for a fish factory. And that was only in a rigid. It didn't pay well so I went on to HGV for a mining company and after 5 years to DG long haul work. The mines and DG pay really well but you have too learn too live in the truck for weeks at a time.

    Gives me PTSD !
Had 1 place i had to go to fairly regular and i never knew how many cars would be in the car park i had to reverse trhrough, really tight entrance with old buildings where the second floor was wider than the first, the overhang was invisible in the mirrors and my left leg was shaking coz of the long slow reverse.
My heart was racing before i even got there with the stress and anticipation.
Then when tipped the exit would be blocked as someone "just nipped into the shop" for 20 mins !!"

Raul great content. If you don't mind, please share the consequences of having a small touch or a dent to a some ones car? how the company will handle it? any consequesnces for the driver? (of course consider no one is hurt!, just the damage to property) and what are the learnings if you have any, would greatly help. I am nearly an year old now into this. Lots of respect from Leicester.

They should provide a rear steer trailer for that tight lot. That's a lot of rubber off the tires just from spinning around that much, lol
