Eurovision 1982: Ein Bißchen Harrogate | Super-cut with animated scoreboard

  • An edited down version of the (less amazing than last year’s) 1982 Eurovision Song Contest in Harrogate with a scoreboard using today’s technology. Nothing but a fun lockdown project.
This edit will give a flavour of the evening (24th April) with Terry Wogan’s UK commentary. There was a bit of work required to get a decent video and audio source matched together, so I’ve used uploads by JUGOVIZIJA and TheEurovision1992 - thanks to them and apologies for the sometimes obvious switching of sources!
In the edit there’ll be some of the intro, a flavour of each entry, and then the scoring sequence edited with a scoreboard built and designed using technology used since 2003 (when the scoreboard became reactive and reordered when points were awarded). Special mentions (edits) this year go to the Intro - which I kept almost intact - and to Belgium for their music box. War was about in the world in 1982 - the Falklands had been invaded 22 days earlier, Europe was filling up with nukes, Israel would invade Lebanon in June - perhaps there’s no wonder why we needed Ein Bißchen Harrogate.
I have friends from the town and I’ve spent time there before and the BBC’s decision to go to Yorkshire remains surprising. The last time the contest was hosted in a settlement where the population was similar to Harrogate’s was Cannes in 1961 (using 2020 figures). I’m a fan of Harrogate, but I wouldn’t say it was in the same league as Cannes! Smaller places would go on to host the Contest (Millstreet), but at this time, it remained remarkable and so I’ve kept the images of the town in the edit.
    DESIGN AND THE BOARD
Well this was the first contest (in this series) with a clear design ethos. And the ethos was somewhat Edwardian? Not great for motion design of course, but we had a logo that was used in the scoreboard design! Not on the song name straps that were overlaid live, though. Incidentally, the style of these were borrowed right from Europe’s coolest show - Top of the Pops. No coincidence: the show’s Producer, Michael Hurll, was TOTP’s Executive Producer at the time.
The Edwardian typeface (which goes with Harrogate’s raison d'être) is called Korinna and was originally made in 1904 by the German foundry H. Berthold AG. Nice poetic link there to the outcome. This version, for computers, was remade by Ed Benguiat and Vic Caruso for the International Typeface Corporation (ITC) in 1974. I’ve retained Dalton Maag’s (licensed) Aktiv Grotesk font for the numbers and the series branding of course.
My board uses the same logic as 1981, not used in the actual contest yet...songs are ranked by points, 12s, 10s, 8s and then their position in the running order.
    TRANSFER NEWS (source: Wiki)
OUT: France - TF1’s head of entertainment, Pierre Bouteiller, saying, "The absence of talent and the mediocrity of the songs were where annoyance set in. Eurovision is a monument to inanity”. There was an outcry in France and they would return with a new channel in 1983.
Greece - ERT withdrew the song after it was revealed that their entry was a cover of a folk song, and therefore violated contest rules. A fine was paid, eek.
    INTERVAL ACT
I’ve repeated my trick from 1981 and used the images of the Yorkshire countryside and Knaresborough over song 18. Rather peaceful, innit.

    • @robertmcqueen289
      @robertmcqueen289 Před 2 lety +2

Bagel. You have nothing to be embarrassed about here. Especially, when considered against the nil points from Luxembourg. At least Austria acknowledged the song.
When you consider today, the UK could have the world's no 1 singer, singing the greatest song ever in the ESC. We wouldn't get any points due to the political voting. Or as l put it, ' When good neighbours, become good friends' & 'punish your enemies'. The annoying thing is though, we help pay for it, and get insulted every year.
People forget that eurovision isn't just a song contest, it's a European cultural event. Especially for the host country, and nominated place where its performed.
So don't feel bad. Today it's worse scoring wise, and the songs instantly forgotten.
A little peace is 39 years old. And we love it still. The great Terry Wogan was spot on when he stated we wouldn't forget this song. He was right.
So be of good heart, and safe.
Greetings to thee from Belfast, Northern Ireland. 🇬🇧🇦🇹

@@robertmcqueen289 Hi, thank you finding me post. Austria acknowledge Germany in the 80's by snubbing them and vice versa, I guess. But your point about the UK, I think it's not true. It's a British thinking that Europe hates them and doesn't vote for them anymore, but honestly, I happen to think UK's entries the last couple of years are too safe and mediocre. Nice background music but nothing more. And let's not forget how the Terry Wogan's comments made the Britons look with animosity at Eurovision, and many artists wouldn't consider participating an option. That last UK entry that I really liked was the Electro Swing song in 2015, which was staged a bit too cheesily then. Before that I loved Bonnie Tyler, who sang out of tune unfortunately and then we have to go back all the way to 2002 to find a really strong UK entry. (2009 was good too but not so relatable for me). UK should blame BBC but not political voting.

Because of Switzerland Germany didn't win 1981.
Maybe this was the reason to give Switzerland zero from Germany in 1982.
But after Switzerland gave 0 to Germany in 1981, they gave 12 in 1982.
Funny fact... after Luxembourg gave 1982 zero points to Germany, they gave 1983 12 points to Germany.
From zero to twelve like Switzerland one year before...

I might be biased (I went to university in Leeds and often visited Harrogate) but I don't understand why this contest doesn't get more love! The production is much more modern than the contests either side. The set is designed for television and works better than the theatrical stages of 1980, 83 and 84 (1984 in particular might be a pretty stage but it's a disaster in terms of camera placement!).
The designer was interviewed in that week's Radio Times (there's a beautiful photo of the set model which shows how it all fitted together). The idea was to fit the staging around each act so that a small intimate song like Norway's has a small intimate stage while a bigger performance gets a bigger space.
The TOTP graphics are fun and it's great to see the commentators in action before each song.
The standard of songs is perhaps not the finest, but there's two big international hits among them - Germany and the UK.
And Harrogate might be small but it's not as if it's in the middle of nowhere. It's right beside Leeds, the third biggest city in the UK!

I have a theory why BBC created such a low budget production resembling something that would shame the USSR. They had staged the contest 6 times beforehand in an 18 year period and by 1982 thought that they would more than likely have to stage ESC at least once every 4 years. It’s like they decided to give themselves 1982 off. If ESC 1982 were a supermarket it’d be ALDI or Lidl.
