I was watching this live from Israel, the entire country almost had a heart attack, but at the end we couldn't sleep till the morning. We were so excited. Too bad our former broadcast authority couldn't produce such a great Eurovision as 1998 in 1999. But we more than compensated in 2019 :)
This was one of the very best Eurovision song finals. Dana International and Her Song Diva FOREVER ROCK! Thank you, Dana International. Israel is currently in war with Hamas but there are some joyful moments of the Israeli people. This is one of them! Bravo!

I agree with you but the special thing for those years was that the rivalry was between three or four countries. In 79, 91 and 2002 just two countries struggled with each other.

I actually think it was better because it felt like every single point mattered. Nowadays its just rushed (even more so with the new system coming this year) and the points from 1-7 doesnt seem to matter and in truth they do but it doesnt feel that way when they are just thrown onto the scoreboard. When they announced all the points it felt a lot better to get for example 5 points than it does now.
It was so much more exciting! Every point mattered and you could actually see all the small details in the scoreboard. Unfortunately this is not doable with so many countries

Macedonia’s first year of participating in Eurovision effectively sealed the end of Malta’s best ever chance of winning (Greece beat Malta into 2nd place by a far greater margin in 2005). On balance I still think Chiara’s ‘The One that I Love’ was the song to beat on the night and without the intervention of Macedonia, with the inevitable geopolitical voting bias, it would have been the deserved winner.
