Both Ms. Rowlands and Ms. Buckley are actors of whom we see far, far to little. At least we have these rare jewels to treasure.

One of Allen’s very best movies.

I agree, and no one really talks about it. It's one of my favorite films.

Wow. She is outstanding in this scene. She and Sandy Dennis own this film.

Buckley should’ve snagged an Oscar nom for her emotionally stirring (albeit brief) performance. Rowland should’ve snagged an Oscar nom as well.

Riveting performance by Betty Buckley. What a cast!

I didn't know Betty Buckley from anything but Frantic and the recent Shamalyan film Split. Nice to see Woody wrote a strong scene for her.

Didn’t you see her as the gym teacher in Carrie?

How do you upstage a Goddess like Rowlands? Betty gears in.

I remember seeing this for the first time and Betty Buckley's remarkable performance was painful to watch; that said, I'd lock lips with the younger Gene Hackman any day if given the chance.

    Betty Buckley's tour de force
This should be studied in acting classes if it already isn't

    Thin walls surround me,
I can always hear them speak,
    Their trials and tribulations,
    The tales of the week.
I have just become an adult,
    It seemed so very far,
I wonder when you'll figure out,
That I am no shooting star.
I talk next door about this,
    I struggle to make cents,
    I wonder if they're listening,
    Through those tiny metal vents.

Good poem. Was it from the perspective of the Mia Farrow character?

This film's theme and meaning and its very core is an examination of self-deception. Anyone who could say that "not a single thing works in this scene" is probably suffering from the very same issue this film examines. One day, it will reveal itself in an epiphany. One of the very reasons I love this film is precisely because everything works - and works so perfectly and beautifully.

@@stevenharrison840 so you're saying that the reason the original poster doesn't like this film is because he unconsciously identifies with the main character and doesn't want to confront the possibility that he might be just like Mariam. Someone who has lived a joyless, emotionless life of denial and self deception. Someone who has always been afraid to let herself feel things deeply. Or maybe this is just projection on my part and maybe my denial about my projection is a form of self deception.🤔
