FujiFilm X T30 vs. EVERYBODY: Incredible - But We're Not Buying One

    The X-T30 is an exceptionally complete, exceptionally priced, exceptionally capable hybrid camera irrespective of price. But we're not buying one. If it didn't have a recording limit, we probably would. If it didn't have a recording limit and DID have IBIS, we almost certainly would. It needs another firmware upgrade to more fully sort continuous Eye AF in video and do a little more to address the propensity to active the Q button while walking around with it, but that's about it.

      Please help I'm an oil painter and I need a camera to shoot models for reference and oil paintings and murals, needs to be hi res so I can print. I don't know very much about photography just need to get the job done, do I get the T30 or the T100F? Also do you recommend black or silver? I like the way silver looks but heard it can reflect when shooting something like a dark glossy painting...thanks for reading.

    Another fantastic video, Hugh! I had a small twist on your final point to make.
    The X-T30 seems to make an exceptional mini cinema rig. It has audio input, USB Type C with Power Delivery standard support so you can run the camera off a power bank while also monitoring audio from the same port. And of course the 10-bit 4:2:2 out... If you need a small yet versatile rig that costs less but delivers in a great professional format, this is the body you go to...

    as always, thank you for the effort and the sharing. i am an appreciative subscriber. from the show notes, i was under the impression that the x-t30 with the 35mm/f2 were used to record this segment. if so, i counted almost a half-dozen moments where the autofocus did that "hunting" dance. were you in continuous or single shot? did you have eye focus engaged? knowing what you now know about the video af capabilities of the x-t30, would you change your settings to what? thumbs up.

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  Před 5 lety

      smalltalk.productions that is correct. I was using continuous Eye AF. I would spend more time tweaking the settings, and feel reasonably confident I could get it to a better place. But this is a press unit that is already over due. I will leave it to others to sort this.

    Your reviews are terrific and a joy to watch. I've shot Canon since the AE1 and currently have the 5D MKIII. My plan is to wait until next year to go mirrorless to see what Canon comes out with, mostly because of the glass I own, and yes, I would buy the adapter but.... These Fuji cameras have gotten my attention.
    So, to put you on the spot. What would you recommend for a pro stock and travel photog that doesn't and probably won't care about video?
    Thanks and looking forward to more stuff

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  Před 5 lety

      Darryl Brooks Thanks for your encouragement! The thing about stock is that most of the time the images won’t be blown up to enormous proportion - but when they are, the audience for them will likely be far enough away and it will be (or should have been) appropriately sharpened. This means you don’t absolutely need maximum megapixels, but dynamic range IS a consideration. So is bit depth, light weight and weather sealing. IBIS, not so much. FujiFilm is making great cameras and glass, but I don’t love their GFX 50R. The X-T3 is incredible in terms of IQ, portability, price and usability. I love it. Call it THE sweet spot. BUT: you may want to take a close look at the 47+ mp Nikon Z7 and Panasonic LUMIX S1R (with pixel shifting), 42mp SONY a7R III (also with pixel shifting, but not as sophisticated as the S1R’s). Medium format... well... hold that thought...

      @@3BMEP You're killing me. :-) For me the huge megapixels are necessary in terms of image quality, but in ability to crop in. I've taken some meh shots and turned them into really good one and still have 2k on the short side. I'll keep watching and playing. Won't make my decision until I see what Canon comes out with. Been watching the Sony closely as well.

  • @trentbosnic
    @trentbosnic Před 5 lety

    I was on the fence between the G9 and the XT30, I ended up going with the XT30 primarily because I want a compact travel camera I intent to bring everywhere, and secondarily because it was cheaper and I like the Fuji glass more. I have big hands and have not had much issue with its small ergonomics - the G9 definitely felt better in the hand but it's so easy to train your muscle memory that you'll just get used to the camera you have no matter what. The recording limit doesn't bother me, and lack of IBIS was the biggest detractor for me. My rational in the end was that you can still get amazing video without IBIS if you're steady, BUT because the camera is so compact I can use a small gimbal if I want super smooth footage, which will be far smoother than anything offered by IBIS on other cameras.

      Chris Nolter For is, the primary value of the external recorder is recording length. There is no appreciable difference in IQ for the same bit depth, and moving from 8-bit 4:2:0 to 10 bit 4:2:2 - again, for what we do - yet adds storage, processing and in the field size and weight overhead.

    It's so sad that the X-E3 is a totally forgotten camera now, which probably means the end of the X-E line. I started with the X-E1 and it's still my favourite body for everyday use, I never liked the X-T10/20/30 ergonomically and think it's a little ugly, and although I switched to a X-T1 later I consider it more like a tool while the old X-E1 is still prettier. IQ is better than my Panasonic g85 that is no longer with me. I do miss the IBIS and flippy screen, but I feel like the glass is better. I also find the fuji remote control app to be quite useful. Since you can start recordings with it, which would make it fairly usable for a lot of vlogging scenarios. Fuji really is great for its usability, and I'm blown away by how small it is. I end up taking it with me in situations where I never took my old Canon dslr or even my g85. It's so light that I sometimes almost forget I'm carrying it. I don't understand the issue with the recording limit. For any serious video work "interview" style with long takes, wouldn't most teams be using an external recorder anyway? Which bypasses the limit.
    IBIS I can understand but at the same time, fitting it in such a small body creates lots of issues and can lead to overheating problems such as in the Sony a6300. Fujifilm internals are radically different than Sony for example. and Fujifilm (just like Canon for example) would never take any chances and risk issues, as they favor reliability. It's a shame, but IBIS is still a few years away before it can be in Fujifilm's smaller camera bodies.

      Sam Sung There are a number of Minolta to FujiFilm XF adapters, but I haven’t worked with any myself.

    Not everyone vlogs. So I like the screen on the X-T30. As an Olympus shooter I love all the features. But. The CAF, eye and face detection is way behind the X-T30 and the 6400. It’s true there is no perfect camera☹️

    Well, just judging from the picture the grip may not be robust enough to hold long lenses for longer period of time ??? The IBIS is also a big NO and looking at the lens selection it doesn't look so great either ... SO why to invest money into the system which is not there yet?? I am not sure if Sigma or Tamron will produce many lenses for this system ???

    • @stephengatley8144
      @stephengatley8144 Před 5 lety +1

      Fujifilm has IBIS in their best body the X-H1 & on top of that Fujifilm lenses are as good as the best Sigma & Tamron has to offer!. I should know I have owned the 20, 35, 85 & 135mm Art primes & the 24-70 & 70-200mm Tamron lenses, Fujifilm leaves nothing to be desired from either of them!. On top of that the 80mm macro from Fuji is one of the best macro lenses to exist today do some research for crying out loud!.

    The recording limit is really what kills it for me. Been looking for an upgrade to my Lumix G7 for ages due to it's limited IQ... seems like g85 might be the best bet.

    I have many cameras and while it's true that the X-T30 is not the most ergonomic, I just love the size and weight - and the available small lenses. To me, this is the most compelling feature of the X series. I upgraded my always-carry camera from the EM5 mkii, a better built camera roughly the same size, but the sensor in the X-T30 is very special - and that's its other compelling feature. There are lots of things I don't like about it - the placement of the Q button and the ugly shutter sound for starters, but it makes a nice picture. BTW, I'm from (and shoot) in Philly. Yes, it's dirty but that's part of its charm: instagram.com/p/BwPPLC9gJmV/

    Note that G95 is not comparable in 4K video quality considering the crop.

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  Před 5 lety

      Ilan Howard I understand your point, but you may want to compare the output by looking at some of the videos I shot with the G95 and then tell me what you think.

    • @ilanhoward
      @ilanhoward Před 5 lety

      Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions Will do, but can’t argue with physics which in this case are against the G95. Btw, another interesting comparison with the x-t30 could be the A7ii which is discounted from time to time for a similar price as the x-t30.

    Hah, I can see from your video that you are using the 35mm f/2 with its awful focus breathing. It's a great lens for stills but for video, when the autofocus makes any adjustment your magnification pulses and makes it exceedingly obvious. ;)

    I have to say a big thank you to the spec whores in photography selling their as new cameras with under 5k shutters in unused condition 👍. I’m getting awesome deals because you convince yourselves you NEED a better light box 🤣, I look forward to buying it from you when the sheen wears off 👍👌🤣!
